Full textThe purpose of this paper was to examine how teaching of history can contribute to an intercultural identity development. My goal was, that on the basis of teachers' concepts and methods, to draw conclusions about how the teacher works with the cultural identity in the subject of history. To answer this, I first look into the theory of cultural identity and the intercultural competence. I also interviewed three teachers working in different municipalities in Sweden with different experiences of students with different cultural backgrounds. The method I have used is a qualitative interview where I interviewed the teachers individually. I asked them both global issues questions and follow-up questions. The answers I have analyzed, resulted in that teachers do not have a conscious strategy of teaching students with different cultural backgrounds in the class. Teachers use different methods such as textbooks, to highlight the different cultures but above all they places the responsibility on the teachers who teach in another mother tongue. In my study it did not revealed any difference in teaching methods from many or few students with different cultural backgrounds and the culture identity is taken for granted. My study shows that teachers belives that the last two centuries of history is most important for the cultural identity but they do not teach in the last two centuries.

Full textMany questions are still left unanswered regarding the period c. 450-700 AD, when hordes of Anglo-Saxon migrants landed on the British Isles and by doing so made the starting point in the foundation of England. Who were these Germanic tribes? The theories of how the migration proceeded are today many. The two major theories today concerns whether it was a question of a mass migration or a gradual migration proceeded by smaller groups of military elite. Another interesting point, well worth discussing, is the concept of cultural identity, and especially of these Anglo-Saxon migrants. How do you strengthen your identity as a newcomer in foreign country? Is this reflected in the material culture, in the way you build your houses or how you choose to bury your dead? The purpose of this essay is to shed more light on the migrants that were to become the English.

Full textThe key purpose of this research has been to study and understand how young people with Syriac ethnicity experience their identity, when living in two different cultures. The Syriac minority is something of a special case when it concerns establishing the identity of an individual, since syriac´s do not have an official country.
To be able to do this research an interview has been done with four young students with syriac ethnicity. The four of them is attending their final year at “gymnasiet” in Sweden which is equivalent to USA’s senior year in high school.
The multicultural school is today a fact and many immigrants attending the Swedish schools today feels misplaced when they meet the Swedish culture through fellow students and society. A clash between cultures occurs and most of the students, with non-Swedish ethnicity, live some kind of dual life. One side of this twin identity represents the ethnic identity which dominates at home and around relatives. The other side is displayed in circumstances outside of their home, which is at school and in the Swedish society in general.
This research shows the general opinion, among syriac high school students, concerning the individual identity and in which way they handle their own identity development when living within two different cultures.
One of my main questions to investigate is to find out if young students, with syriac ethnicity, develops a weak root in their ethnic identity by living outside of the syriac community.
One of my conclusions is that a student with syriac ethnicity, whom is educated in an intercultural school is rather encouraged in seeking his/her roots. Since the multicultural environment awakens a curiosity in students to seek their own ethnic identity.

Full textAbstractCultural differences between a migrant and its new environment could affect themigrant’s identity and lead to cultural diagnoses. It affects the migrants’ ability tochallenge their difficulties and develop in the new environment. A goodmotivation to change for a migrant can help him to develop in the new countryand recover from mental illness. The purpose of the study was to examine therelationship between the three migrants’ motivation, cultural identity, and mentalillness. Additionally, obstacles and possibilities are examined to help migrantsmaintain or arouse motivation and also recover from mental illness. The studywas implemented with the help of semi-structured interviews with three migrantsand two staff who work with migrants on daily activities. The study is based ontwo main theories, which were Self-determination theory by Edward L. Deci andRichard (2000) and the other one was Berry’s acculturation theory (Berry & Kim,1988). I also used three further theoretic perspectives, which were Erikson’spsychosocial development theory, empowerment, and Gofman’s stigma theory. The study shows that when the migrants are motivated they emphasize theircultural identity, integrate easily in an environment, develop and recover frommental illness. The study’s result also indicated that the supervisors whoparticipated in the study believe that their contributions can motivate migrants tointegrate and improve their mental illness when the migrant’s individual needsand social context are considered. It can increase the migrant’s autonomy andevolve their cultural identity, which can affect the migrant’s mental illnesspositively.
