Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is to chart and analyze the growth and development of variety entertainment in Stockholm 1870-1920 in order to reach an understanding of its transnational models, economic dynamics, and cultural attraction, as well as to explain how this genre was understood in the public debate. With the help of theories derived from Antonio Gramsci and Pierre Bourdieu variety entertainment is discussed as an expression of the social changes and the dynamics of market capitalism that became visible in new urban life styles and patterns at the end of the 19th century. The results of this investigation show how German, British, American and French variety entertainment influenced their Swedish counterparts. At the same time factors such as national and local economics and existing political and social conditions were determinants in the creation of the specific forms of expression that variety entertainment assumed in Stockholm. The dissertation also shows how social practice in the variety halls went through a process of change due to a conscious attempt on the part of both the entrepreneurs and politicians to discipline behaviour. In this process social interaction declined and a sharper focus came to be placed on the content of the performances. Because many of its characteristics challenged social values, variety entertainment came to function as a platform for the mediation of important norms and values. This was a contributing factor in making this form of entertainment a target for the temperance and morality movements. By focussing on how the entrepreneurs, actors, writers, composers and critics thought and acted in the growing public urbanity, Moulin Rouge in Swedish makes an important contribution to understanding how early mass produced Swedish culture took shape in the end of the 19th century.

Full textThis work is about the history of mathematics from a didactic perspective in the upper secondary school ’s education. The purpose is partly to investigate how teachers and students look at the history of mathematics’ incorporation in mathematics teaching and partly if there is a discrepancy between different school book writers how to interpret the Swedish National Agency for Education's intention to give students the opportunity to relate mathematics in a historical context. Based on the different viewpoints of some didactics researchers, issues about why we should include the history of mathematics, which alternative methods that can be used, and any possible barriers to doing so, are discussed. In addition, teaching the history of mathematics is viewed in relation to both theoretical learning perspectives and gender equality. The methods used in the work consist, partly of a qualitative survey based on questionnaires addressed to some teachers and students, and partly from a literature comparison between four of the most commonly used school book series in mathematics on the Swedish literature market. The literature study is based on both a quantitative and a hermeneutic approach where both the amount of historical content and the meaning of the texts are studied and interpreted based on the way in which they were presented. The result of the study shows that teaching history of mathematics is prioritized relatively different among the teachers, and it is given essentially low priority when it competes against subjects like arithmetics, algebra, geometry, and others. Furthermore, the interest is shown to be limited by most of the students. On the other hand, a somewhat greater interest is noted among the teachers, although in relatively high proportion they themselves lack education in the history of mathematics. The study also shows that there are significant differences in how the school book writers look at the students' need for mathematics-historical content, not least between the a-, b- and c-tracks of the mathematics courses. Even the way in which the mathematics-historical content is presented differs substantially between the studied textbook series.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka och skapa förståelse för hur lärare med olika utbildning, som undervisar i kursen Kultur- och idéhistoria, uppfattar kursen, hur de tolkar kursplanen för densamma och hur de tror att detta speglar sig i praktiken.
Med hjälp av en mindre enkätundersökning fick jag inledningsvis fram intressanta fakta om 23 lärares utbildning och syn på kursen Kultur- och idéhistoria. Detta har legat till grund för en del av mitt resultat, samtidigt som enkätsvaren har utgjort urvalsunderlag för tre intervjuer. Genom intervjuerna har jag fått mer djupgående förståelse för hur dessa tre tänker omkring ämnet.
Av enkätundersökningen framgick att en lärarexamen med historia, i kombination med ytterligare ett eller två huvudämnen, är den klart vanligaste utbildningen bland de 23 lärare som besvarat enkäten. En vanlig kombination är historia och svenska. Det varierar i ganska hög grad huruvida lärarna har läst till fristående kurser med anknytning till ämnet kultur¬historia. De intervjuade lärarna anser att deras intressen och kunskaper präglar undervisningen i hög grad. Även enkätsvaren tyder på detta. Efter ett långt yrkesliv anser de dock att de har förvärvat många betydelsefulla kunskaper på annat håll än i den formella utbildningen.

Full textThe aim with this study was to look deeper into educational thoughts of tradition and with a music educational interest of knowledge investigate the intentions and conventions behind the communication of musical knowledge in historical manuals. Prefaces from four manuals from two different centuries were studied; an instrumental manual and a music theory manual from the 16th century, and an instrumental manual and a music theory manual from the 18th century. The manuals were Silvestro Ganassi’s Opera intitulata Fontegara dated 1535, Thomas Morley’s A Plaine and Easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke dated 1597, Johann Joseph Fux’ Gradus ad Parnassum dated 1725 and Johann Joachim Quantz’ Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen dated 1752. The prefaces were analyzed in three levels with a combined method, to investigate how musical knowledge was communicated both on an individual level and on a more socially orientated level. The theoretical approach in this study was cultural psychology, which made possible to scientifically shed light upon the relation between individual and traditions and thereby connect this study to the music educational practice of today. The intentions that were found most clearly mirrored in the prefaces were those concerning the process of musical formation. The results also showed that historical manuals from the 16th and 18th century represent a holistic wiew on music that cannot separate theoretical from practical knowledge as it is a unit in music as a bransch of art connected to the process of formation.
