This thesis examines the social and economic changes which took place in the Kumaon Division of the North-Western Provinces of India, from the time it was annexed to the possessions of the East India Company after the so-called "Nepal War" in 1815, unti11921. It recognizes the conditions which prevailed in the area at the time of annexation (when the previous administration had forced an unusual balance between the elites and the labour force) and the importance of the physical environment within which change occurred. This thesis is an ethnographic study of the social organisation of a Central Himalayan village. Fieldwork was carried out between 1989-1991 in Almora district of the Kumaon region in the hills of Uttar Pradesh, India. Kumaoni villagers conceptually organise their social world on segmentary principles, locally expressed by the opposition between the inside (bhiter) and the outside (bhyar). The conceptual opposition of 'inside' and 'outside' is replicated at various levels of society. Analyzing qualitative data collected in the summer of 2013, this paper examines programs in Uttarakhand, India where hunger has been eradicated, yet malnutrition persists. It has been well-established that performances of thin-film devices based on π-conjugated polymers, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors and photovoltaic cells, are strongly dependent on the organisation of the polymer molecules and their interactions with other constituents in multicomponent devices. The use of CPs in integrated circuits, solar cells, light-emitting diodes or sensors often requires their covalent fixation and patterning on various surfaces.
