Abstract:
Representation is the use of signs that can be symbolized by image, writing, and sound. Representation is related to culture and there are tools to represent culture, through films, which is the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie. The purpose of this research is to determine the represent ation of Chinese culture in the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie. The method used is descriptive qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis and observation techniques in the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie. The research results show the strong Chinese culture in the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie, which is packaged in a sign and symbol, and the meaning of cultural symbols can be found.

Abstract. This research is entitled “Subtitling Strategies of Po’s Utterances in Kung Fu Panda Movie”. The aim of this research is to find out the subtitling strategies of Po’s Utterances in Kung Fu Panda Movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method to describe then analyze the subtitling strategies of Po’s utterances in Kung Fu Panda movie. The steps of analyzing data are: collecting the data, identifying the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data, and the last step is drawing the conclusion. Transfer strategy has the most frequency in Po’s utterances in Kung Fu Panda movie, the percentage reaching 53,91% over half of Po’s utterances. Transfer strategy is translated more easily because this strategy translating the source language completely and accurately into the target language. So it is easy to make the audience understand from the source language to the target language with the original meaning from this movie. Meanwhile, transcription has the least frequency in Po’s utterances, the percentage is 2,90%. Transcription strategy is found rarely because this strategy is used to translate a language when there exist unusual term in the source language (SL), like nonsense language and third language. So it is difficult to find out transcription strategy in Kung Fu Panda movie.Keywords: Subtitling Strategies, Transcription, Transfer, UtterancesAbstrak. Penelitian ini berjudul “Strategi Penerjemahan pada Ujaran Po sebagai tokoh utama di Film “Kung Fu Panda” dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui strategi penerjemahan ujaran Po di film Kung Fu Panda. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menjelaskan dan menganalisis strategi penerjemahan ujaran Po di film “Kung Fu Panda”. Tahapan-tahapan analisis adalah : mengumpulkan data, mengidentifikasi data, mengelompokkan data, menganalisis data, dan tahap terakhir adalah mengambil kesimpulan. Strategi transfer memiliki frekuensi paling tinggi dalam ujaran Po di film Kung Fu Panda, dengan persentase mencapai 53,91% lebih dari setengah ujaran Po. Strategi transfer merupakan strategi yang lebih mudah digunakan karena strategi ini menerjemahkan bahasa sumber secara lengkap dan akurat ke dalam bahasa sasaran. Jadi lebih mudah untuk membuat penonton mengerti bahasa sumber ke bahasa target melalui makna asli dari film tersebut. Sementara, transkripsi memiliki frekuensi terendah dalam ujaran Po, persentasenya 2,90%. Strategi transkripsi jarang ditemukan karena strategi ini digunakan untuk menerjemahkan bahasa ketika ada istilah yang tidak biasa dalam bahasa sumber (BS), seperti kata-kata yang tidak bermakna atau bahasa lain. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) mengidentifikasi teknik terjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan, (2) mengevaluasi hasil ideologi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah Sub-Judul Kung Fu Panda 3 dan hanya fokus pada tuturan Po. Po adalah tokoh utama dalam film ini. Ada 151 tuturan Po yang digunakan sebagai data. Sub-judul tuturan Po dianalisis dengan teknik terjemahan oleh Molina & Albir (2002). Dan, metode penilaian kualitas hasil terjemahan oleh Nababan dll (2012) dan difokuskan pada keakuratannya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan ada 11 teknik yang diterapkan dalam Sub-Judul Kung Fu Panda 3 Pada Tuturan Po. Yaitu, kesepadanan lazim 327 kali (52,88%), harfiah 50 kali (12,58%), variasi 73 kali (12,25%), peminjaman murni 45 kali (7,55%), reduksi 20 kali (4,87%), penambahan 25 kali (4,19%), modulasi 16 kali (2,68%), eksplisitasi 15 kali (2,52%), peminjaman alamiah 9 kali (1,68%), kreasi diskursif dan transposisi dua kali (0,33%).Kata kunci: teknik terjemahan, tuturan, Kung Fu Panda 3

This study employs Kung Fu Panda as a case to dissect the tripartite mechanisms of cultural translation in intercultural communication: 1. Visual Layer: Integration of ink-wash aesthetics and 3D modeling to construct hyperreal Oriental imagery (e.g., topological transformations of the Jade Palace's dougong structures inspired by the Forbidden City). 2. Narrative Layer: Reframing Taoist philosophy through the Hollywood hero's journey, recoding "non-action" (wuwei) into a universal coming-of-age motif. 3. Value Layer: Modernizing cultural interpretations by grafting kung fu ethics onto individualism. The research proposes a "Physical-Behavioral-Spiritual" triadic dynamic model: 1. Physical: Using the panda as a cognitive anchor to reduce cultural discount. 2. Behavioral: Bridging values through codified kung fu choreography. 3. Spiritual: Achieving covert cultural permeation via philosophical metaphors. A communication formula** is formulated: (Universal Values × Cultural Symbols) ÷ Cognitive Costs, demonstrating how the film balances core symbol stability (panda/kung fu) with limited deformation of secondary symbols (architectural patterns). This equilibrium carves discursive space within the globalization-localization dialectic, offering China a "resilient framework" paradigm for cultural dissemination—preserving genetic cultural stability while enabling creative rebirth through media grammar.

Figurative Language Analysis in Animated Film Kung Fu Panda 3. Figurative language enriches the dialogue of animated films, adding depth and meaning. This study aims to analyze the figurative language used in the animated film Kung Fu Panda 3 produced by DreamWorks Animation. This study utilized the figurative language theory by Herbert L. Colston. This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the dialogues from various scenes containing figurative language. The data collection steps are as follows: First, the researcher reads the transcript while watching Kung Fu Panda 3 and marks figurative language. Second, the researcher identifies and groups types of figurative language based on Colston's theory. Finally, the context and meaning of each figurative language is explained and analyzed. As the result, metaphors are the most frequently used type of figurative language in this film. Through figurative language, the speakers express several meaningful messages about the importance of cultivating self-confidence, particularly in understanding and accepting ourselves.Keyword: Figurative Language, metaphor, messages

The widely acclaimed animated movie, Kung Fu Panda, provides an interesting resource for teaching concepts of motivation including Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation, Self-efficacy, Self-fulfilling Prophecy and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory. This article provides clip-by-clip examples that exhibit these concepts along with discussion prompts and probable answers that facilitate engagement and understanding among students. Time stamps of clips have been provided which students are expected to watch and prepare reflection notes prior to the lecture. In-class discussions among students based on their reflection notes prove effective in analysing and learning the interwoven concepts and their application in true sense.

This paper examines the theme of perseverance in the animated film Kung Fu Panda (2008), focusing on the journey of the protagonist, Po, as an embodiment of resilience and determination. The story follows Po, an overweight and unskilled panda, who dreams of becoming a kung fu master. Po is unexpectedly chosen as the Dragon Warrior, tasked with protecting the Valley of Peace. Through hard work, belief in himself, and overcoming self-doubt, Po demonstrates that perseverance, rather than natural talent, is the key to success. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Po’s character arc reflects the importance of perseverance in overcoming adversity and achieving personal growth. The research adopts a narrative analysis approach, focusing on Po’s interactions with other characters throughout the film. This paper explores how Po’s perseverant journey aligns with Albert Bandura’s concept of self-efficacy, where persistence, belief in one’s abilities, and overcoming negative feedback led to eventual success. The analysis reveals that Po’s perseverance is key not only to his success as the Dragon Warrior but also to his self-acceptance and personal fulfilment. The conclusion highlights how the film serves as an inspirational narrative, teaching audiences that persistence and belief in oneself are vital components of achieving greatness, regardless of one’s initial circumstances.

As China further promotes the spread of culture, traditional Chinese symbols such as "Kung fu" and "martial arts" are also becoming familiar to foreign countries. This work has selected the film Kung Fu Panda 3 as as the research object, which is a story based on a Chinese cultural background while presents in an English context. Through a comparative analysis of Chinese and English subtitles of the film, the film subtitle translation strategies and skills are explored from three translation techniques among Peter Newmark's translation theories.

Abstract:
The goal of the study is to contribute to the solution of research problems by identifying the issues with expressive speech acts through an analysis of emotional expression, relationship building, and self-identity. Particularly in this study that uses data from the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie, to differentiate between the various types of expressive illocutionary acts in the film, this study used a descriptive qualitative method, with data analysis based on Yule's (1996) theory. Six expressive types are identified by this study in films: doubting, anger, praise, joy, blaming, and regretting. 24 doubting, 21 angry, 17 praising, 13 joy, 12 blaming, and 9 regretting were among the 96 examples that were discovered. This study reveals important details about the expressive personalities in the movie in addition to speech act types.

AbstractAnchored on Yule’s categories of semantic roles, the present study examined the language of cartoon scripts with Chinese characters in Walt Disney’s Mulan 1 and 2 and DreamWorks’s Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2. Specifically it described the: (1) semantic features of the scripts in terms of semantic roles; and (2)similarities and differences in the language of the scripts semantically. Data analyzed were limited to 800 sentences which were randomly selected from the scripts of Mulan 1 and 2 and Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2. More specifically, 200 lines per film were analyzed by taxonomizing the utterances in terms of identifying the semantic roles of argument nominals in each utterance. Results revealed the roles of agent and experiencer in the subject positions are dominant in contrast with the frequency of occurrences of theme, goal, location and source. In conclusion, the language of animated film is relatively simpler, literal and direct to suit the level of the target audience who are generally children. Finally, this research suggests that more linguistic levels should be conducted to explore the language features on cartoon movies in the future.

Background: Kung Fu Panda 3 is an animated film from the United States that collaborated with a Chinese company. The film tells the story of Po's journey in handling his identity crisis as the main antagonist threatens the village's peace. Addressing social issues such as identity crisis, this animated film, a combination of action and comedy genres, is considered interesting to research as the presence of identity crisis issues is relatively unnoticed among people of different ages. Purpose: This research aims to provide the process of Po's character in handling their identity crisis throughout the story of Kung Fu Panda 3. Methods: This research uses a qualitative research method using narrative analysis by Tzvetan Todorov, which is supported by the approach of Lacey and Gillespie. Results: This research’s findings depict the process of Po's character in resolving its identity crisis whilst overcoming the menace from the villain, which is analyzed according to the five stages of narrative structure in Tzvetan Todorov's narrative analysis method with the approach of Lacey and Gillespie. Scenes are classified into five stages: equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption, attempt to repair disruption, and reinstatement of equilibrium. Conclusion: This research concludes with an overall representation of how the character Po can overcome their identity crisis through the five stages and suggests a utilitarian application of a thorough narrative analysis from a communication perspective. Implications: This research can theoretically serve as to how identity crises arise and are resolved in people with the role of other individuals around them in communications. Directors and scriptwriters, especially those producing animated films, can use this research to communicate issues on mental health in a way that people can perceive easily and have fun.

This research aims to identify the types of opting out of maxim strategies and to analyze the reason of conflict found in the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the purpose of making this research is to analyze the type of opting out strategies and the reason of conflict the use of opting out strategies. The main theory used to identify opting out strategies is taken from Grice (1975) and Perrine (1984:56) in Amanda, A (2017) dealing with reason of conflict. The results type of opting out of the research showed that there were 23 data obtained which respectively consisted of 5 data (22%) on opting out of maxim quantity, 6 data (26%) on opting out of maxim quality, 7 data (31%) on opting out of maxim manner, and 5 data (21,7%) on opting out of maxim relation. Meanwhile, the reason of conflict that influenced the use of opting out strategies consisted of 15 data (65,2%) on internal conflict, 8 data (34,7%) on external conflict. Based on the data obtained above, it could be clearly seen that the most common type of opting out strategies found in Kung Fu Panda 2 movie was opting out of quality (31%) and the most common type of conflict found in the use of opting out strategies was internal conflict (65,2%). This study is concerned with the analysis of Catford’s formal shifts use in speech act translation from English into Bahasa Indonesia in Kung Fu Panda movie. The analysis covers the use of level shift and category shift on achieving pragmatic equivalence and how the visual-verbal relation happened along with the pragmatic achievement process. This study took documentation and a questionnaire on collecting the data. In this study, a theory from Baker (1992) was applied to analyze pragmatic equivalence achievement. Moreover, the theory from Halliday (1994) in Martinec and Salway (2005) was used to identify visual-verbal relations. The results of the study depicted (1) the use of level shift and category shift were very needed which led to pragmatic equivalence achievement (95,3%). Based on the target readers and expert raters, (2) the visual-verbal relation helped the translator on target text arrangement by providing the context of which the speech act was being uttered. The visual-verbal relation identified in the Kung Fu Panda movie were exposition (12,7%), enhancement (9,3%), extension (5,3%) and locution relation (72,7%). (3) The translator tended to use category shift dominantly (66,67%) for recreating the most suitable target text that was similar to the source text’s pragmatic meaning.The large identification of visual-verbal relation locutionallowed target and expert readers to perceive the meaning lied in speech act only from the word given.

A qualitative approach was employed to elucidate and evaluate the psychological concern depicted in this film. Given the narrative&#39;s visual medium, the utilization of cinematography in terms of camerawork served to articulate the storyline, environments, and characters. Additionally, the analytical framework of Sigmund Freud&#39;s&nbsp;<em>&quot;psychoanalysis&quot;</em>&nbsp;was adopted as the methodology for this examination, aiming to ascertain the sources of Po&#39;s anxiety as they relate to the phases of Freud&#39;s&nbsp;<em>psychosexual development</em>. In recent years, with economic globalization, international cultural exchanges are getting closer. Many foreign film works have been introduced into China, especially the English films popular among Chinese audiences. In order to realize film appreciation between different languages, subtitle translation comes into being. However, as an emerging field, subtitle translation studies are not mature compared with traditional translation studies. The Adaptation and Selection Theory is the core theory of the eco-translatology which is a novel and relatively complete system of translation theory put forward by Hu Gengshen, a Chinese scholar. This thesis adopts the Adaptation and Selection Theory as the theoretical basis. Firstly, the research on subtitle translation at home and abroad is reviewed. Secondly, the development, main principles and applicability of the Adaptation and Selection Theory are elaborated. Finally, under the guidance of this theory, this thesis analyzes how translators choose appropriate translation strategies, based on the specific example of subtitle translation in Kung Fu Panda 2, to select and transform from the three dimensions. Besides, how to get a translation with a high “degree of holistic adaptation and selection” are also explored.

The article argues that where secrecy and secrets are key aspects of conspiracy theory narratives and practice, the genealogies of the/a secret have not been well understood. We argue that two forms of the secret, one a premodern notion of the secret as truth and revelation, the other a post-Derridean non-secret, inform two distinct forms and functions of contemporary conspiracy practice.

Abstract:
The study focuses on Politeness Principle found in the movie Kung Fu Panda 1 using Leech’s theory.Leech defines politeness as forms of behaviour that establish and maintain comity. He proposed six types of politeness maxim such as tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. The objectives of this study are to classify the type of politeness maxim used in the movie, to know the frequency of the most and the least maxim used in the movie, and to explain how the figures in the movie used politeness principle in the communication.The writers used descriptive analysis in analyzing the politeness principle used in the movie and used a simple quantitative analysis to know the frequency of the politeness principle. The result of the study shows that all politeness maxim is used in the movie with the frequency tact maxim 10 utterances (9,8%), generosity maxim 5 utterances (4,9%), approbation maxim 24 utterances (23,5%), modesty maxim 11 utterances (10,8%), agreement maxim 45 utterances (44,1%), and sympathy maxim 7 utterances (6,9%).Keywords: Pragmatics, Politeness principle, Movie.

Large manufacturing companies frequently receive thousands of web surveys every day. People share their thoughts regarding a wide range of products, their features, and the service they received. In addition, more than 190 million tweets (small text Web posts) are generated daily. Both survey feedback and tweets are underutilized as a source for understanding customer sentiments. To explore high-volume customer feedback streams, in this article, we introduce four time series visual analysis techniques: (1) feature-based sentiment analysis that extracts, measures, and maps customer feedback; (2) a novel way of determining term associations that identify attributes, verbs, and adjectives frequently occurring together; (3) a self-organizing term association map and a pixel cell–based sentiment calendar to identify co-occurring and influential opinion; and (4) a new geo-based term association technique providing a key term geo map to enable the user to inspect the statistical significance and the sentiment distribution of individual key terms. We have used and evaluated these techniques and combined them into a well-fitted solution for an effective analysis of large customer feedback streams such as web surveys (from product buyers) and Twitter (e.g. from Kung-Fu Panda movie reviewers).

The research focuses on analysing the function of slang in modern cartoons (Madagascar 2, Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Open Season, Cars) as well as translation strategies used to convey accurate meaning. Our data from film scripts (163 examples containing slang terms) has proved that slang, as an important part of cartoons’ verbal component, should be and mainly retained in translation. Excerpts from original cartoons scripts show slang use, that may function both for the protagonists’ characterisation and for the mapping of humor (carnivalesque) world picture. Componential analysis of meaning – breaking down the sense of slang terms into their minimal distinctive features – was used to determine the meaning of lexemes and reconstruct semantic domains actively verbalised by slang.&#x0D; The assumption has been made that due to the universality of domains slang can be potentially translated in most cases. Componential analysis is particularly applicable to semantically related lexemes (in one language or comparable ones).&#x0D; A thorough analysis of slang translation showed the employment of the following strategies: stylistic compensation (50.3%), literal translation (44.7%), omission (4.9%) and cultural equivalence (0.1%). As seen, a substantial proportion of the slang words can be translated from English into Ukrainian without significant loss of meaning. The neutralisation of slang appears to be inevitable in some cases.

The film series “White Snake” of Light Chaser Animation is an attempt to internationalize Chinese comics in terms of cultural elements, characterization and core spirit.However, in the midst of continuous innovation, Chinese comics also face new dilemmas, and how to get out of this dilemma is the key to further development of Chinese comics in current era. By using both documentary and case study methods, I review the literature on the “White Snake” series to understand how the film has been received by audiences in China and the overseas market. What’s more, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current state of adaptation of Chinese comics base on the various aspects of the adaptation and innovation of “White Snake” in the literature of others.Then, in the part of the study on new dilemmas, I use the method of comparative thinking to compare “White Snake” with the success of foreign films called “Kung Fu Panda” and “Dragon Ball” respectively, and come to the conclusion that national comics already have good innovation in terms of cultural elements and characterization, but in order to further develop Chinese comics, we need to combine the core spirit with the current trend of the times, and through the localization of foreign culture to arouse the cultural resonance of the new era.

As a more popular spiritual entertainment project, film and television entertainment is gradually receiving attention from people. However, in recent years, the film industry has developed rapidly, and the output of animation movies has also increased year by year. How to quickly and accurately find the user’s favorite movies in the huge amount of animation movie data has become an urgent problem. Based on the above background, the purpose of this article is to study the new visual expression of animation movies based on artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. This article takes the film industry’s informatization and intelligent development and upgrading as the background, uses computer vision and machine learning technology as the basis to explore new methods and new models for realizing film visual expression, and proposes relevant thinking to promote the innovative development of film visual expression from a strategic level. This article takes the Hollywood anime movie “Kung Fu Panda” as a sample and uses convolutional neural algorithms to study its new visual expression. The study found that after the parameters of the model were determined, the accuracy of the test set did not change much, all around 57%. This is of great significance for improving the audiovisual quality and creative standards of film works and promoting the healthy and sustainable development of the film industry.

This article studies how Chinese audiences’ participation contributes to a new all-time animation box-office champ, “Monkey King: Hero is Back,” and how such participation may contribute to facilitating a richer and more varied cultural life in China in the future. This made-in-China animation film snatched the throne from DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” by breaking the latter’s 4-year record (617 million RMB) after announcing its box-office sale had exceeded 800 million RMB on 4 August. The significance of the animation is approved by a seminar held by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television, naming it “the milestone of domestic animation film production” on 4 August. The legend of the animation is an exemplification of the enthusiasm of Chinese audiences, who identify themselves not only as fans but also followers and cheerleaders of the film. They self-addressed themselves as zi lai shui (literally means tap-water, 自来水), figuratively means the Internet mercenaries willing to advertise the film on social media at their own expense. Drawing on the literature of power and influence, fans of “Monkey King: Hero is Back” will be interviewed and their online activities and comments will be analyzed to find out (1) how the scattered audience members built a united identification online and (2) how such spontaneous but also well-organized Internet aggregation turns into SHI (overwhelming with numerical strength, social capital, and influence) and further empowers the Chinese audiences in an era in which social media prosper in China.
