Abstract:
The suicide of rock star Kurt Cobain in 1994 raised immediate concerns among suicidologists and the public at large about the potential for his death to spark copycat suicides, especially among vulnerable youth. The Seattle community, where Cobain lived and died, was especially affected by his sudden death. An overview of Cobain's life and death is presented and various crisis center and community‐based interventions that occurred are discussed. Preliminary data collected from the Seattle Medical Examiner's Office and from the Seattle Crisis Center to assess the potential impact of Cobain's de

AbstractThis article investigates the relationship between biography and authenticity within the aesthetics of grunge musician Kurt Cobain, using the 2002 Riverhead Press volume of his journals as a primary source. Focusing on Cobain's fascination with the human form and with bodily fluids, I argue that his idea of the ‘sick body’ functioned as a central metaphor that shaped his approach to various media (prose, lyrics, drawing and singing) such that there was a homology between these different forms. I draw on excerpts from the Journals to show the meanings that he associated with the ‘sick b

This article examines the use of epistrophe, a rhetorical technique involving the repetition of phrases or words at the end of successive clauses, across different mediums and eras, focusing on Abraham Lincoln's speeches and Kurt Cobain's lyrics. The study contrasts how epistrophe enhances emotional and rhetorical appeal in both political oratory and music. Findings indicate that while epistrophe unifies and reinforces themes in Lincoln's speeches, it intensifies emotional expression in Cobain's lyrics. Every life tells a story. Film has proven to be a worthwhile medium in which individual lives can be told and thereby will be remembered. We know as little about any artist’s reasons as we do about anyone else’s, but a few studies are have been done. And at least actuarially, in relation to level of overall risk, the good studies provide some helpful grounding. To get at a range of possible dynamics, none universal, in this chapter the author inspects the particular cases of Diane Arbus, Kurt Cobain, and Sylvia Plath. Specifically, the author
