Abstract:

Abstract:
Pirdot plant(Saurauia vulcani. Kurth)is a plant that grows naturally in a tropical climate. During this decoction pirdot leaves plants are used by the people to treat diabetes disease. The purpose of this study was to isolate triterpenoid compound from ethyl acetate extract of pirdot leaves. The sample extraction was performed by total of maceration method using ethyl acetate as a solvent. The separation and purification of the compound was carried out by column chromatography method followed by stain pattern analysis with thin layer chromatography (TLC). Structure characterization of pure compound was determined using UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT 135º, HMQC, HMBC, 1H-1H COSY and MS spectroscopies including compared with various literatures. Based on the analysis result, the pure isolate obtained was identified as a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound, 3-hydroxy acid, 12(13)-en,28-oleanolate acid with the molecular formula C30H48O3. The triterpenoid compound of pentacyclic oleanolic acid is the first reported from the pirdot plant (Saurauia vulcani. Kurth).

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines Ernst Kurth’s critical engagement with the ideas of Hugo Riemann and his eventual reformulation of harmonic dualism in dynamic terms. The principle of “dynamic dualism” appears most cogently in Musikpsychologie ([1931] 1947). After discussing the broader psychological movement within which this book emerged, I outline the aims and audience of Musikpsychologie and provide a detailed discussion of the dynamic dualism Kurth articulates therein. I then return to the origin of Kurth’s fascination with dualism, namely to Riemann, tracing points of intersection between the two figures across several decades. I suggest that Kurth’s displeasure with Riemann’s theories is symptomatic of a broader philosophical disagreement over the explanatory power of music theory and its relation to psychology at the time.

Abstract:
Lita Kurth shares her recollections of Mrs. Swanson, her 3rd-grade teacher in rural Wisconsin. Mrs. Swanson helped her students learn about the world outside their small community by exposing them to things that many students did not have at home. Students without phones got to practice telephone skills, and students without books had access to a collection of classic novels to read. Lita was herself a curious student who snuck books out of the classroom to read at home, and Mrs. Swanson took an interest in her development, both by pushing her to find her own voice and giving her a boost when her self-esteem was lagging.

Abstract:
Early twentieth-century psychological theorists (Ernst Jentsch, Sigmund Freud) associated the uncanny with the occlusion of the boundary between real and imaginary, and with the defamiliarization of the familiar. Their music-theoretic contemporaries (Heinrich Schenker, Ernst Kurth, Alfred Lorenz) associated reality with consonance, imagination with dissonance. Late Romantic composers frequently depicted uncanny phenomena (in opera, song, and programmatic instrumental music) through hexatonic poles, a triadic juxtaposition that inherently undermines the consonant status of one or both constituents. Quintessentially familiar harmonies become defamiliarized liminal phenomena that hover between consonance and dissonance, thereby embodying the characteristics they are called upon by composers to depict. Examples of uncanny triadic juxtapositions are drawn from music of Gesualdo, Monteverdi, Haydn, Wagner, Mahler, Grieg, Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Puccini, Ravel, and Schoenberg.

Abstract:
We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters (GCs) associated with the giant Virgo elliptical NGC 4472. ¿From their metal-line indices, we find that our sample of GCs span a metallicity range of approximately −1.6 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0 dex. The SSP models of Worthey (1994; W94) predict that the metal-poor population of GCs has an age of 14.5 ± 4 Gyr and that the metal-rich population is 13.8 ± 6 Gyr old, whilst the models of Kurth, Fritze-v. Alvensleben & Fricke (1999; KFF99) predict ages of 6.0 ± 2 and 8.0 ± 5 respectively. We conclude that, within the uncertainties, the GCs are old and coeval, and that the bimodality seen in the broadband colours primarily reflects metallicity and not age differences.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Platelet gelsolin (G), a 90,000-mol-wt protein, binds tightly to actin (A) and calcium at low ionic strength to form a 1:2:2 complex, GA2Ca2 (Bryan, J., and M. Kurth, 1984, J. Biol. Chem. 259:7480-7487). Chromatography of actin and gelsolin mixtures in EGTA-containing solutions isolates a stable binary complex, GA1Ca1 (Kurth, M., and J. Bryan, 1984, J. Biol. Chem. 259:7473-7479). The effects of platelet gelsolin and the binary gelsolin-actin complex on the depolymerization kinetics of rabbit skeletal muscle actin were studied by diluting pyrenyl F-actin into gelsolin or complex-containing buffers; a decrease in fluorescence represents disassembly of filaments. Dilution of F-actin to below the critical concentration required for filament assembly gave a biphasic depolymerization curve with both fast and slow components. Dilution into buffers containing gelsolin, as GCa2, increased the rate of depolymerization and gave a first order decay. The rate of decrease in fluorescence was found to be gelsolin concentration dependent. Electron microscopy of samples taken shortly after dilution into GCa2 showed a marked reduction in filament length consistent with filament severing and an increase in the number of ends. Conversely, occupancy of the EGTA-stable actin-binding site by an actin monomer eliminated the severing activity. Dilution of F-actin into the gelsolin-actin complex, either as GA1Ca1 or GA1Ca2, resulted in a decrease in the rate of depolymerization that was consistent with filament end capping. This result indicates that the EGTA-stable binding site is required and must be unoccupied for filament severing to occur. The effectiveness of gelsolin, GCa2, in causing filament depolymerization was dependent upon the ionic conditions: in KCI, actin filaments appeared to be more stable and less susceptible to gelsolin, whereas in Mg2+, actin filaments were more easily fragmented. Finally, a comparison of the number of kinetically active ends generated when filaments were diluted into gelsolin versus the number formed when gelsolin can function as a nucleation site suggests that gelsolin may sever more than once. The data are consistent with a mechanism where gelsolin, with both actin-binding sites unoccupied, can sever but not cap F-actin. Occupancy of the EGTA-stable binding site yields a gelsolin-actin complex that can no longer sever filaments, but can cap filament ends.

ABSTRACT Vertically transmitted endogenous retroviruses pose an infectious risk in the course of pig-to-human transplantation of cells, tissues, and organs. Two classes of polytropic type C porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) productively infect human cells in vitro. The cloning and characterization of replication-competent PERV-B sequences from infected human cells (F. Czauderna, N. Fischer, K. Boller, R. Kurth, and R. R. Tönjes, J. Virol. 74:4028-4038, 2000) as well as the cloning of functional PERV-A and -B sequences from porcine cell line PK15 (U. Krach, N. Fischer, F. Czauderna, and R. R. Tönjes, J. Virol. 75:5465-5472, 2001) have been previously described. Here we report the isolation of four full-length proviral sequences from a porcine bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library that comprises chromosomally assigned PERV. Clones Bac-PERV-A(130A12) and Bac-PERV-A(151B10) map to pig chromosome 1 and demonstrate close homology to PK15-PERV-A(58) in env and to PERV-MSL in long terminal repeat (LTR), gag, and pro/pol sequences. Clone Bac-PERV-A(463H12) is located on pig chromosome 3 and demonstrates close homology to PK15-PERV-A(58) in env and to 293-PERV-B(43) in LTR, gag, and pro/pol (Czauderna et al.; R. R. Tönjes, F. Czauderna, N. Fischer, U. Krach, K. Boller, P. Chardon, C. Rogel-Gailard, M. Niebert, G. Scheef, A. Werner, and R. Kurth, Transplant Proc. 32:1158-1161, 2000). Clone Bac-PERV-B(192B9) is located on pig chromosome 7 in the swine leukocyte antigen region and is highly homologous with but distinct from the previously described functional clone 293-PERV-B(43) and bears the number of repeats initially observed in the LTRs of clone 293-PERV-A(42) (Czauderna et al.; Krach et al.). Clones Bac-PERV-A(130A12), Bac-PERV-A(151B10), and Bac-PERV-A(463H12) were replication competent upon transfection into susceptible 293 and HeLa cells. Bac-PERV-B(192B9), however, bears two stop codons in pro/pol preventing this clone from being replication competent in some individual pigs, but initial screenings indicate that this provirus might be intact in others. The data suggest that the porcine genome harbors a limited number of infectious PERV sequences, allowing for specific screening in different pig breeds.

Abstract:
We calculated the exchange, correlation and total energies of clusters of alkali metals with N=1-150 atoms in the spherical jellium model. The calculations were made using the Kohn-Sham method with exchange and correlation energies evaluated in the meta-generalized gradient approximation (MGGA), proposed by J. P. Perdew, S. Kurth, A. Zupan and P. Blaha, in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of J. P. Perdew, K. Burke and M. Ernzerhof, and in the Local Density Approximation (LDA). We evaluated the relative deviations of MGGA and GGA energies with respect to LDA. Exchange energies of MGGA and GGA are more negative than the LDA exchange energy and become closer to this as the cluster size increases. On the other hand, the GGA and MGGA correlation energies, which are almost identical, are less negative than LDA. The deviations of GGA and MGGA exchange-correlation energies with respect to LDA are smaller than those of the exchange and correlation energies separately. For clusters with 18 and 20 atoms we have compared our jellium results with Variational and Diffusion Monte-Carlo results. Errors of LDA for exchange and correlation tend to cancel so that the total exchange-correlation energy is close to the Monte-Carlo results. Similar cancellations occur with GGA and MGGA. We also examined the validity of the liquid drop model.
