Abstract:
AbstractWe prove that degrees that are low for Kurtz randomness cannot be diagonally non-recursive. Together with the work of Stephan and Yu [16], this proves that they coincide with the hyperimmune-free non-DNR degrees, which are also exactly the degrees that are low for weak 1-genericity.We also consider Low(ℳ, Kurtz), the class of degrees a such that every element of ℳ is a-Kurtz random. These are characterised when ℳ is the class of Martin-Löf random, computably random, or Schnorr random reals. We show that Low(ML, Kurtz) coincides with the non-DNR degrees, while both Low(CR, Kurtz) and Low(Schnorr, Kurtz) are exactly the non-high, non-DNR degrees.

Abstract:
With the announcement in 1978 (Kurtz, 1978) of short periodic photometric variations of HD 101065, the first member of a subgroup of CP2 stars was found. This gained attention due to the possibility of applying the methods of stellar seismology to late A to early F type stars. However, the extremely low photometric amplitude of these stars, which is typically few millimagnitudes in B, and the short periods, ranging from few minutes to about 15 minutes, make these stars difficult to discover and a considerable amount of telescope time is required to accumulate sufficient data for a reliable analysis of the frequency spectrum. As a consequence aliasing imposes serious problems. Synchronous observations from observatories well separated in longitude could overcome this dilemma, and have indeed proven to be sucessful (Kurtz and Seeman, 1983; Kurtz and Balona, 1984; Kurtz, Schneider and Weiss, 1985; Kurtz and Kreidl, 1985).

Abstract:
Daniel Kurtz (Curz, Kurz, Kurc), baletmistrz Teatru Narodowego w czasach króla Stanisława Augusta, był znakomitym tancerzem i autorem wielu podziwianych baletów.

α Circini is the brightest of the known rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars. Previous observations of this star in photometry (Kurtz et al. 1994) have shown that it has one dominant pulsation mode, which is a pure oblique dipole mode (ℓ = 1) with a frequency of 2442 μHz (P = 6.825 min). Kurtz et al. (1994) measured the amplitude of the principal mode to be 2.55 mmag (Strömgren v).

Scholars try to get close to Kurtz and Conrad’s inner men to analyze their attitudes towards race through race. However, the author transfers race into human drive to give explanation of Marlow’s narrative in Heart of Darkness and further argues that Marlow’s narrative has dug deeply into human beings’ drive. To change it another way, the journey to the central Africa does not just force Marlow to see primitive Africa, the natives, to meet Kurtz, his madness and evil, it is also a journey to self-discovery or drive-discovery.

Abstract:
Heart of Darkness is often viewed as an allegory that relates the tragic demise of the colonists and the annihilation of the noble ideas they hold. In Heart of Darkness, the colonial theme is best examined through the fate of Kurtz, the protagonist of the novel who emerges from the surface of conventional European values as a man of varied talents and high culture. Equipped with moral ideas, Kurtz travelled to the Congo to campaign for noble ideals, yet having arrived in a primeval place, the uncivilised wilderness awakened his “brutal instincts” and “monstrous passion”. He submitted himself utterly to the temptation to “go native”, descending into a moral and physical state of degeneration. He is to become a savage man, consumed by the tangled and unforgiving jungle. The life and death of Kurtz in the wilderness helps to demonstrate that the treat of barbarism comes from indeed within civilisation itself. This paper thus seeks to examine the savage humanity by scrutinising Kurtz’s Mephistophelian transformation in the heart of darkness.

Abstract:
The atmospheric structures of magnetic CP2 (Ap) stars are notoriously difficult to model: line blanketing is severe, surface gravities are extremely uncertain, and the surface abundance inhomogeneities lead to different atmospheric properties as a function of position on the star. Seismology of the p-modes of rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars (Kurtz 1990), which vary with periods of a few minutes and amplitudes below 0.01 mag and 1 km/s in light and velocity, has already helped constrain the luminosities – and hence, the logg values – of some cool CP2 stars (Kurtz 1992, these proceedings). We show here that the pulsations of an roAp star can also directly probe the temperature structure of a CP2 atmosphere.

AbstractA seminal theorem due to Weyl [14] states that if (an) is any sequence of distinct integers, then, for almost every x ∈ ℝ, the sequence (anx) is uniformly distributed modulo one. In particular, for almost every x in the unit interval, the sequence (anx) is uniformly distributed modulo one for every computable sequence (an) of distinct integers. Call such an x UD random. Here it is shown that every Schnorr random real is UD random, but there are Kurtz random reals that are not UD random. On the other hand, Weyl's theorem still holds relative to a particular effectively closed null set, so there are UD random reals that are not Kurtz random.

Abstract:
The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 marked a turning point in the statutory rights of people who may lack capacity. The legislation sought to place the individual at the centre of decision-making and was viewed as having the potential to give people a voice and an opportunity to be heard. Section 44 of the legislation introduced a criminal offence of ‘ill treatment or neglect’ of a person who lacks capacity. The maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment (or a fine or both) was intended to underly the seriousness of the offence, especially considering the vulnerability of potential victims. Interpreting s 44 has, however, proved a real challenge and the courts have acknowledged the difficulties which its drafting presents. The recent Court of Appeal (COA) decision in R v Kurtz is illustrative of the kind of issue that the statute has generated. The court was tasked with deciding whether proving a lack of capacity on the part of the victim is required when the donee of a power of attorney is charged with the offence under s 44(1)(b). This article considers Kurtz within the context of the MCA 2005 and notes three related COA decisions. It examines what impact Kurtz may have on future prosecutions brought under s 44(1)(b) and considers the future of the s 44 criminal charge more generally.

A study aimed to determine the concentration of phosphate available to the rice field soil and to compare the two methods of phosphate extraction, which are Olsen that uses NaHCO3 reagent and Bray that uses Bray and Kurtz reagents, had been done. The extract was reacted with phosphate coloring reagent and standards and the absorbance was measured using spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 693 nm. The results showed that the extract of phosphate available using Olsen method showed higher value of concentrations which were 422.861; 771.614; 1389.464; 1607.386; 821.591; and 1139.925 ppm. On the other hand, Bray method showed a lower value which were 16.102; 13.899; 11.307; 7.181; 7.183; and 9.073 ppm. NaHCO3 increased the pH and more phosphate was released, while the Bray and Kurtz reagent decreased the pH and less phosphate was released. Due to the lower pH of the sample, Bray method is more suitable for acidic soils rather than Olsen method because of its specificity for acidic soil, while the Olsen method can be used for acidic and alkaline soil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recently, one of the rapidly oscillating Ap stars, HR 3831, has been found to have an equally split frequency septuplet, though its oscillation seems to be essentially an axisymmetric dipole mode with respect to the magnetic axis which is oblique to the rotation axis (Kurtz et al. 1992; Kurtz 1992). In order to explain this fine structure, we investigate oscillations of obliquely rotating magnetic stars by taking account of the perturbations due to the magnetic fields and the rotation. We suppose that the star is rigidly rotating and that the magnetic field is a dipole field and its axis is oblique to the rotation axis. We treat the effects of the rotation and of the magnetic field as perturbations. In doing so, we suppose that the rotation of the star is slow enough so that the effect of the rotation on oscillations is smaller than that of the magnetic field.

In order to explain this fine structure, we investigate oscillations of rotating magnetic stars by taking account of the perturbations due to the magnetic fields and the rotation. We show that the magnetic field on axisymmetric dipole modes distorts the dipole oscillation pattern to have axisymmetric octapole components so that the frequency pattern becomes a septuplet rather than a triplet, and that the additional effect of the rotation leads the frequency pattern to be asymmetric. The formula allows us to get information about the magnetic fields, the rotation, and the geometrical configuration of the star from the oscillation data.

We here demonstrated that Bombyx mori prothoracicostatic peptide was allosterically activated by Drosophila sex peptide leading to Gαi-independent inhibition of cAMP, while its activation resulted in Ca2+ mobilization and kurtz-dependent receptor internalization in response to the endogenous agonist prothoracicostatic peptide.

AbstractThe rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars are upper mainsequence stars that pulsate in non-radial p modes of high overtone. We present an observer’s overview of the roAp phenomenon and discuss significant developments since the last major observational reviews of Kurtz (1990a) and Matthews (1991).
