Full textPressure ulcers is a care injury and is caused by several factors and cause patients suffering. Annually pressure ulcers entail 50 000 extra care days in Sweden and increases the already burdened care queues. Up to 90% of all pressure ulcers can be prevented with preventive measures. Despite guidelines and preventive measures the care injury pressure ulcers still occurs. Safe care is characterized by minimizing risks for care injuries. The aim was to examine factors that affect nurses’ compliance with pressure ulcer prevention in inpatient care. A quantitative literature review has been performed with 12 articles, 10 were collected from Cinahl and Medline and two with manual search. The result shows that several factors affected nurse’s compliance to pressure ulcer prevention where knowledge were the biggest factor. Significant differences were seen with that higher education gave better pressure ulcer prevention and higher education gave better attitude. Conclusion of this literature review provides a picture of how competence, heavy workload, the organization and nursing work affects nurse's compliance with pressure ulcer prevention. This study provides a limited picture of how these factors affect compliance, where qualitative research could determine specific problems nurses experience around these factors more in depth.

Full textBackground: Nurses encounters obese patients when working. Perceptions form attitudes, and the attitudes that occurs during given care can lead to obese patients feeling discriminated against. Obese patients have a higher tendency of avoiding care, compared to patients with normal BMI. Attitudes that exist between nurse and patient can affect the nursing relationship. Risk of delayed or cancelled care is present when attitudes of nurses influence the care given to obese patients. Aim: To investigate nurses' attitudes towards obese patients in care. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach. Articles with quantitative design has been used. The results were based on eleven quantitative articles that were analyzed using the Friberg’s three step model. Results: The result shows that different types of attitudes exist against obese patients. Five different themes were created with the attitudes that emerged: the care of obese patients, depending on patients’ lifestyle, patients' personal characteristics, physical health of patients and the appearance of patients. Conclusion: This thesis shows that there are different attitudes towards obese patients among nurses. Nurses should be aware of their attitudes to safeguard the relationship with obese patients.

Full textThrough the years, kidney transplants have improved into the best and most cost-effective treatment for people with kidney failure (Prihodova, et al., 2014a). Research has shown that the need of kidney transplant is increasing by 7% per year (Heaphya, et al., 2013). In January 2016, 646 Swedish people needed a kidney (Livsviktigt, 2016). The purpose of the literature review was to examine how people ≥18 years value their quality of life after a completed kidney transplantation in comparison to kidney failure people and the general population. Literature review has been carried out on the basis of a quantitative method with deductive approach. The result included ten scientific articles, which were sought out from the databases CINAHL, Medline and PsycInfo. The inclusion criteria was that they should be quantitative, peer reviewed, published after 2005 and include people older than 18years who received a kidney transplantation. The results were analyzed by Fribergs three steps analysis model (2012a) and showed that age seem to affect quality of life of renal transplant recipients. Quality of life increases after a kidney transplantation in comparison to kidney failure patients, but is worse than the general population. The compilation of the literature review may obtain a better overview of nursing after kidney transplantation.

Full textBackground: Myocardial infarction is the largest widespread disease both in Sweden and in an international perspective. More men are affected, despite this more women die. Myocardial infarction occurs when the blood no longer reaches the coronary arteries because of a blockage. Myocardial infarction can be categorized in two types, ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The disease can occur from both influenceable and unaffected causes. Myocardial infarction can be treated with both surgical and pharmacological treatment. The literature reviews theoretical framework was safe care which is one of the nurses six core competences. Aim: To investigate the treatment interventions of myocardial infarction in women. Method: A literature review with quantitative design has been performed to investigate women's treatment interventions when having a myocardial infarction compared with men. The quality of the articles has been ensured with a quality protocol developed by the Department of Nursing at The School of Health and Welfare in Jönköping. The three-step structure by Friberg has been used to analyse the result. Results: The results show that women receive an insecure care with lower quality compared with men. Women did not receive an adequate care in either the acute stage or during the hospital stay. The findings are presented in four categories and ten subcategories that includes Examination (delayed examination, defaulted examination), Time to treatment (door-to-balloon time, delayed treatment, late diagnose), Surgical treatment (PCI, reperfusion therapy) and Pharmacological treatment (in hospital, at discharge). Conclusion: To contribute to a more equal and safe care, knowledge about women's treatment for myocardial infarction needs to increase. Further research is needed to contribute to saved lives, longer life expectancy and increased well-being for affected women.

Full textApproximately 200 000 persons in Sweden are living with heart failure. Early symptoms are dyspnea, fatigue and difficulties in daily activities due to lack of energy. As the heart failure proceeds the patients are often facing anxiety, sleep deprivation and depression. Perceived physical limitations has shown to correlate well with perceived quality of life. Many patients with heart failure avoids physical activity due to feelings of uncertainty. The role of the nurse is to make the patient feel comfortable and safe to engage in physical training, by providing knowledge. It is important to identify a suitable level and form of individually tailored training. The purpose of the literary review was to describe how various forms of physical activities affects quality of life in patients with heart failure. 16 quantitative articles were chosen and analyzed. The result shows that physical training affects quality of life in a positive manner in heart failure patients. Level of participation is of greater importance than the form of training. Supervised training has shown to increase participation, as well as social interaction. By providing individually adjusted information and by identifying a form of training suitable to the patient, the nurse is able to influence the patient towards an increased engagement in physical activities, presumably leading to improved quality of life.

Full textBackground: Preoperative anxiety is common among patients undergoing surgery. Studies have shown that a high level of preoperative anxiety is associated with increased need for sedatives, higher doses of anesthetic drugs, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, higher postoperative pain and a slower and more complicated postoperative recovery. The preoperative environment is well suited for alternative, non-pharmacological interventions, where music is one of them. Objective: The objective was to describe the effect of music intervention on preoperative anxiety. Method: A literature review where articles with quantitative approach has been analysed, with the purpose of getting an overview of the current knowledge. The analysis has been done according to the three-step model, described by Friberg. Results: The result includes a review of nine quantitative articles, based on studies where the effect of music intervention on preoperative anxiety has been studied. The music intervention showed a positive effect on the reduction of patient reported experience of anxiety in all studies, however, no consistent positive effects were seen on the objective parameters, such as heart rate and blood pressure. Conclusion: Music intervention should be implemented as a compliment to standard preoperative care, as it has shown to be a safe method with no known side effects, and with good results.

Full textMain title: People with Parkinson's disease and their assessment of their health-related quality of life. Subtitle: A literature review Background: PD is a neurological and progressive disease, with motor and non-motor symptoms. Research shows that people with PD are often worried about how the disease will affect their QoL and they tend to estimate their HRQoL poorer than other parts of the population. The HRQoL is described as the meaning of how health affects the QoL and is important to take into account in nursing work. Aim: To describe people with Parkinson's disease and their assessment of their health-related quality of life. Method: A literature review consisting twelve scientific articles with quantitative approaches was analyzed according to Friberg's three-dimensional model. Articles where the HRQoL is measured with PDQ-39SI was included. Results: Several different factors were negatively related to the HRQoL such as longer illness, an early disease outcome and a high degree of symptoms. Some treatments had a positive effect on the HRQoL such as treatment with levodopa infusion, drug therapy compliance, physical activity and deep brain stimulation. Conclusion: This literature review has contributed with knowledge of how different factors affect the HRQoL in PD. Knowledge can help nurses to respond to this patient group, as several factors have a negative impact on the HRQoL.

Full textBackground: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of our primary public diseases, and the incidence of the disease is increasing worldwide. Type 2 diabetes mellitus can lead to severe complications if the disease is not controlled. It is not possible to cure the disease, but blood sugar can be lowered to normal levels through lifestyle changes. This means that healthcare has a major task to handle to promote the health of these patients. To support the patient in managing their situation, the nurse can use motivational interviewing. Aim:To describe the effect of motivational interviewing in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus regarding lifestyle. Method: A quantitative review with 14 scientific articles. Result: Motivational interviewing showed a varying effect. The positive effects could be seen onself-care, waist measurements, and physical activity. No effect is shown regarding other outcome measures. When summarizing all outcome measures from the articles, motivational interviewing showed only a 35% significant effect. Conclusion: Despite the varying effect of motivational interviewing, it may be possible for nurses to use in care for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to reduce the risk of complications. With the help of motivational interviewing, the nurse can promote motivation, but for this to have an effect, the patient himself must have the motivation to change his lifestyle.

Full textAbstract Background: Mental illness is a problem in society today, in Sweden and internationally. An expression of mental illness is self-harm which can be experienced as complex for nurses to deal with. A patient with self-injuries usually first meets the emergency department and the nurse, who has a big importance of assessment, treatment and care. The nurse’s attitude can lead to patients experiencing being treated negatively. Aim: The aim was to describe factors that affect the nurse’s attitudes towards patients with self-harming behavior in somatic care. Method: Literature overview of 12 scientific articles with quantitative design. Dataanalysis has been done with Friberg’s analysis in three steps. Result: The results show factors that affect the nurse’s attitude towards patients with self-harming behaviors. The factors are summarized in five categories: Values, clinical experience, age, gender and knowledge. Conclusion: In order for the nurse to be able to care for patients with self-harming behavior, knowledge of how attitudes affect the interactions with the patients is needed. Lack of knowledge and education as well as the nurse’s own values can lead to insecurity, helplessness and frustration in the meeting with patients, which can lead to a negative attitude. Keywords: Attitudes, nurse, person-centered care, quantitative design, self-harming behavior.
