Abstract:
Smješten između istarskog poluotoka i gorskog trupa Velebita, Kvarner zauzima 3 264 km površine i broji 309 759 stanovnika (1991. godine). Demografska slika, inače promjenjiva u prostoru i vremenu, ukazuje na nisku stopu prirodnog kretanja, neujednačenu strukturu stanovništva i njegovu pretežnu koncentraciju u gradska središta. Opće značajke Kvarnera mogu se svesti na sljedeće: populacija stari, Hrvati neprestano i uvjerljivo drže brojčanu prevagu, tercijarni sektor djelatnosti apsorbira većinu aktivnog stanovništva, ruralna naselja pretežno stagniraju ili opadaju, urbana središta mahom bilježe porast broja stanovnika tako da stupanj urbanizacije prati uzlazni trend. Autor vrši analizu i usporedbu demografskih kretanja na kopneno-otočnom dijelu Kvarnera.

Abstract:
Uz neke prekide taj časopis izlazi i danas. U njima se nalaze radovi s područja povijesti i povijesti umjetnosti, arheologije, jezikoslovlja, etnologije i folklora, književnosti, filozofije, politike, glazbe, Crkve, arhitekture itd.

Abstract:
The paper describes the basic demographic processes on the Kvarner islands in the last twenty years. The census data from this period show a constant population growth on the Kvarner islands and promote them into one of the most vital sub-regions of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The results of the analysis show that the mechanical component of the total population change, i.e. immigration, which managed to overcome the negative natural demographic trend, was the cause of this positive demographic trend. As a result, natural population change on the Kvarner islands 1991-2011 belongs to the "regeneration by immigration" type. However, since increased immigration did not influence the reduction of the negative natural demographic trend, it is safe to presume that "fictive" residents dominate the immigration contingent. This hypothesis is supported by the comparison of the census change index 2011/2001 and the type of demographic resources index in 2001.

Abstract:
Purpose – Tourism demand for destinations, services and facilities is changing rapidly and only the destinations with high adaptability can expect to survive. Tourists prefer destinations with strong brands that guarantee a high level of service quality and are prepared to pay for it. Design – This study designs to determine that destination has to recognize the importance of tourism, but, as a brand, Kvarner is not distinctive enough. Based on its natural beauty, rich heritage and its vicinity and accessibility to a large part of Europe, it has the potential of becoming a leading destination. Methodology – Research was carried out in accordance with the Integrated Model of Destination Competitiveness based on 85 indicators. Various statistical methods like T-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Shapiro-Wilk test were used. Approach – The research was conducted using a questionnaire, through a dissemination of emails and personal interviews with tourist officials and people involved in the development of tourism in the Kvarner area. Findings – This study finds that destination management is the weak point of destination competitiveness and hypotheses that resources strongly support the overall competitiveness of destination Kvarner, than the elements of destination management and that destination brand is not sufficiently distinctive are confirmed. Originality of the research – This study provides valuable information and comparable data about competitiveness of Kvarner destination and points at brand influence on destination competitiveness.

Abstract:
The responsibility to preserve our natural and cultural heritage is not just a national issue but also, through international agreements, an international commitment. In World Heritage Education (WHE) students are expected to know, to cherish and to act in favour of World Heritage sites and communities. The aim of this quantitative and qualitative study is to investigate teachers’ views of WHE and the Kvarken Archipelago as a learning environment. A total of 105 teachers within Finnish primary and secondary education answered a questionnaire. The results indicate that teachers struggle to meet Unesco´s aims of WHE. The respondents primarily emphasize students´ knowledge of WH sites. A few respondents highlight the skills and experiences needed to reinforce young students´commitment to preserve WH sites, and to help close the gap between school and society. A more distinct connection to PBL and ESD is discussed as one of the pedagogical implications for the development of WHE.

Abstract:
Spatial-functional duality and physic-geographical diversity of Pag Island are the result of interaction between the key physical factors (karst relief and bora) and socio-economic development in two different administrative frames: Pag and Rab communities. The geographical position of the island on the boundary of Kvarner and Dalmatia determined the main trend of the historic-geographical development. Critical analyses of old cartographic representations enable the reconstruction of the dominant spatial processes, which influenced the landscape modelling. Additionally, on the basis of the geographical data represented on the ancient maps and charts, it is possible to re-enact the socio-economic relationships between Pag island and adjacent regions: Ravni Kotari, Velebit mountain area and Kvarner and other Zadar islands.

Abstract:
Ivan Klobučarić was one of the most important Croatian cartographers at the turn of the 17th century. In 1579 he produced a panorama of Rijeka which is kept in the War Archives (Kriegsarchiv) in Vienna. The Styrian Provincial Archives (Steiermärkische Landesarchiv) in Graz houses a map of the Bay of Rijeka with a panorama of the city dated 1586, attributed to Klobučarić. His cartographic legacy created between 1601 and 1605 can be found in the Clobucciarich – Skizzen collection. It comprises 108 sheets. Most are double-sided. Some pages show two or more items, so that the entire collection includes around 500 cartographic depictions. In terms of western Croatia, there are about twenty. This paper provides a list of the contents of Klobučarić’s cartographic depictions relating to the area of Croatia. A sketch of the Kvarner Littoral from Rijeka to Sveti Juraj with the mainland hinterland is described, with a map of parts of Croatia from Rijeka to Omiš with the mainland hinterland. An analysis was conducted of the contents of the parts of the sketch and map showing the Kvarner Littoral, comparing the representation of settlements showed and those omitted, with toponyms on the map and those shown on earlier maps of the Kvarner Littoral. The paper indicates errors in previous works about Klobučarić’s life, work and cartographic activities.

Abstract:
Carpathia was a vessel owned by the British Cunard Line which went down in history as the rescuer of the castaways from the Titanic, a passenger ship that famously sank in the early morning of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. Since 1903 the Carpathia had sailed on the transatlantic line between Rijeka and New York and was mostly used for the transportation of emigrants, employing many Croatian sailors, especially from Istria and the Kvarner. In this paper I discuss the names and fate of the unknown Croatian sailors from Labin area who participated in the rescue of Titanic passengers in April 1912 drawing on eyewitness accounts, their written records, and the available literature. By analysing the British Cunard Line official list from 1912 I discovered that out of the 240 crewmembers, 83 sailors came from Istria and the Kvarner. This well-known list is now expanded with 17 names of sailors from the Labin area. Fieldwork also helped find the families of their descendants. These new mariners were located by checking the surname frequency in Labin’s environs. Most came from Sveta Nedelja, Kršan and Labin. By analysing the list I conclude that they worked as waiters, stokers and greasers with a monthly salary from 76 to 127 Austro-Hungarian crowns. They were proficient in foreign languages and often served as interpreters. For some, that ship was a ticket to a better life. I was also able to determine that 20 mariners from Istria and the Kvarner who sailed on the Carpathia in 1912 defected from the ship and stayed in New York.

Abstract:
In the northeastern Adriatic Sea, southwest of the Istrian Peninsula, a persistent thermohaline front is formed, called here the Istrian Front (IF). A Slocum glider was operated across the IF near the entrance to the Kvarner Bay between 24 and 27 February 2015. Three Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were also deployed at the entrance of the Kvarner Bay during the same period. The glider crossed twice the IF, which was characterized by a fast response to the local wind condition, detecting strong salinity, temperature and density gradients. During the first crossing a strong northeasterly Bora wind was blowing. This resulted in a very sharp and strong thermohaline front, extended vertically in the entire water column, between saltier and warmer water to the south, and the fresher and colder water to the north. Across the front the SST changed ~ 1.2 °C within a distance of 2.4 km. On the contrary, during the second crossing, about 2 days later, under weaker wind conditions, the IF appeared to be much smoother, inclined and wider while the SST changed ~ 1.2 °C within a distance of 8 km. A strong density gradient was also reported, coincident with the thermohaline IF. From previous observations, mainly experiments in 2003, the IF was known only as a thermohaline front compensated in density. In winter 2015, the density front was strong and well defined, demonstrating a density difference of about 0.36 kg/m3 within a distance of 2.4 km. The ADCP measurements and the numerical model simulations demonstrated a circulation of cold waters exiting from the Kvarner Bay in the southern part of the entrance, while during a Bora event this outflow was taking place in the northern part.

Abstract:
A Kárpát-Pannon térség neogén-kvarter vulkáni működése szorosan kapcsolódik a térség geodinamikai fejlődéséhez. Horváth Ferenc professzor munkássága, ösztönzése nagy mértékben segített abban, hogy a magmaképződés eseményeit, a vulkanizmust igyekezzünk behelyezni a tágabb lemeztektonikai környezetbe. Habár a petrogenetikai modellek egyre jobban finomodnak, azonban ezek újabb kérdéseket is felvetnek, perspektívát adva a további kutatásoknak.A Kárpát-Pannon térség neogén-kvarter vulkáni működését négy nagyobb csoportba oszthatjuk: (1) szilíciumgazdag magmák kitörése; (2) mészalkáli bazalt-andezit-dácit-riolit vulkanizmus; (3) alkáli bazalt és trachit vulkáni működés és (4) káli-ultrakáli vulkáni kitörések. Mindegyik magmás esemény esetében a fő befolyásoló tényező a litoszféra és ezen belül a földkéreg elvékonyodása volt. A riftesedés kezdetén andezit-dácit vulkánosság zajlott (19-20 Ma), a földkéregbe nyomuló magmák átfűtötték a litoszférát, megteremtve a lehetőséget többek között arra, hogy néhány millió évvel később jelentős (több ezer) térfogatú szilíciumgazdag magma alakítson ki kiterjedt magmatározó rendszert a Pannon-medence belső területén. A több szakaszban zajló kitörések 4000 km3-t meghaladó mennyiségű vulkáni hamuanyagot hoztak a felszínre, ami alapján a földkéregben ennek többszörös mennyiségű magmás anyaga helyezkedhetett el. Mindez nagymértékben befolyásolta a földkéreg termomechanikai állapotát. A szilíciumgazdag magmák kitörésének egyik fő időszaka 17,5-14,4 millió évvel ezelőtt volt, ami Európában, az elmúlt 20 millió év legnagyobb vulkánkitöréseit eredményezte. Az új cirkon U-Pb koradatok nem csak a kitörési korokat pontosították, hanem a vulkáni működéssel egyidejű blokkforgások idejét (16,8-17,1 Ma, illetve 15-16 Ma), továbbá a magmatározók fennállási idejét is. Ez utóbbiak szerint a szilíciumgazdag magmatározók több százezer éven keresztül létezhettek a földkéreg középső-felső részén. A vulkáni hamurétegek kulcsszerepet játszanak a Paratethys üledékgyűjtők rétegsorainak korrelációjában. A mészalkáli kőzetsorozatok látszólag a Kárpátok ívét követik, azonban a fúrás adatok és a szeizmikus szelvények értelmezései rámutatnak arra, hogy jelentős mennyiségben keletkeztek a Pannon-medence belső területein is. A felszínen megjelenő vulkáni komplexumok esetében a Pannon-medence északi részén húzódó szegmens számos különbséget mutat a keleti vulkáni ághoz képest, ami eltérő képződést sejtet. Ekkor friss asztenoszféra anyag feláramlás hőhatása okozhatta a metaszomatizált litoszféra kis mértékű olvadását. A Kárpát-Pannon térség vulkáni működésének fő időszaka 10-17 millió éve volt, azonban még a kvarterben is tucatnyi kitörés zajlott. A legfiatalabb vulkáni működés értékelése arra hívja fel a figyelmet, hogy a térség alatti asztenoszféra kőzettani felépítése olyan, hogy még jelenleg is képes olvadásra, azaz magma keletkezhet, továbbá a geodinamikai környezet több helyen is lehetőséget adhat magma felnyomulásra és vulkánkitörésre. Mindezek fontos további perspektívát adnak, hogy Horváth professzor szellemi örökségét követve igyekezzünk még jobban megérteni térségünk geodinamikai fejlődését és jelenlegi állapotát, beleértve a vulkáni működés kapcsolatát.

Abstract:
Several hypothetical cases of oil spills from tankers in the Kvarner and Rijeka Bay were analyzed using three-dimensional circulation models coupled with oil spill model. Two circulation models—local one covering the area of Kvarner Bay, Rijeka Bay, and Vinodol channel along with the basin-wide one covering the whole Adriatic Sea—are connected through the one-way nesting procedure by imposing the results from the Adriatic model to the open boundaries of the local one. Oil spill model relays on the current fields obtained by the local circulation model during all our simulations. Spreading of the oil pollution from three hypothetical positions of tanker accidents in the local model domain was simulated for the periods of 10 “winter-season” and “summer-season” days. The oil spill model results show that the hypothetical tanker accidents in the center of the Rijeka Bay are the most dangerous for the studied area in both seasons. Summer-season case shows significantly worse situation from the ecological point of view, oil spills spread on the larger area simply because stratification and mixing present during the winter period reduce oil slick effect.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper studies the problems and specific issues related to tourism and coastal urbanism, namely through an analysis of the tourist's, the resident’s and tourism management's evaluation of the elements of the tourist offer related to space, environment and sustainable development in the tourist region of Kvarner (Croatia). Design - The strategic guidelines for tourism development must be based on the principles of sustainable development, that is, on a balanced relation between the economic, physical, environmental and social factors of development. This includes the preservation of urban and spatial alignment and overall development. Methodology / Approach – Empirical research was conducted using a sophisticated questionnaire adapted to each target group (tourists, residents, tourism management), printed in Croatian, English, German and Italian. A Likert scale with both open- and closed ended questions was used, ranging from 1(worst) to 7 (best). The latter part of the questionnaire evaluated 37 tourism offer elements. The collected questionnaires were encrypted and statistically analysed. The method of one-to-one interviewing was mostly used in gathering data, although the questionnaire was self-administered by respondents in a small number of cases. Findings – It is indicative that tourists (5.79) have, on the average, rated the elements of the tourism offering with a higher score than residents (5.31), while the score given by tourism management is somewhere in between (5.61). This suggests that residents are more critical, but also more aware, of the need for improvement in all elements of the tourism offering. Priority is given to the natural factors (5.56). These results indicate that all target groups agree that natural factors - space, resources and the environment- must be protected. Originality of the research – This study provides reliable and actual basic quantitative and qualitative information about the attitudes of tourists, residents and tourism management toward the tourism offer of Kvarner and its destinations.

Abstract:
Purpose – At a time of exceptionally fast technological advancement, smart cities have become necessary for the better management of existing resources in a tourist destination. The aim of this paper is to investigate if the smart city concept has been recognized in micro destinations in the Kvarner region for the purpose of sustainability and raising residents’ quality of life. Design/Methodology – The research has been conducted in the Kvarner tourist destination in December 2019. Citizens were asked their opinions within the scope of the following narrow tourist destinations – Lovran, Opatija and Rijeka. The questionnaire used closed-ended questions. This short research focuses on public perception regarding the smart city concept. Findings – The results show that 67% of the people living in tourist destinations are not familiar with the smart city concept. Most, however, state that its implementation would improve the touristic development of the destinations. The development of smart destinations leaves plenty of room for each community undertaking that step to define the shape and functionality of its environment while respecting the community’s historical, cultural-artistic and social heritage. Originality of the research – There are many papers dealing with the topic of smart cities, but it is rare for authors to explore the transformation of traditional tourist destinations into contemporary sustainable communities. The obtained results can be used to inform policy making towards becoming more proactive, smart and sustainable.

Abstract:
A Villányi-hegységben eddigi ismereteink szerint a kainozoos képződményeket elsősorban késő-pliocén–kvarter szárazföldi üledékek, vörösagyagok és lösz képviselik. A villányi Templom-hegy siklóbevágásának közelmúltbeli letisztítása eddig ismeretlen kvarter képződményt tett hozzáférhetővé, amely fontos adalékot jelenthet a Villányi-hegység kainozoos fejlődéstörténetéhez. A cikk célja a mezozoos rétegekre települt fedőképződmények leírása, képződési körülményeinek, valamint korának meghatározása és ősföldrajzi viszonyainak felvázolása.A kibillent alaphegységi rétegsorra homokbetelepüléses durva kavics, majd eróziós határral kavicszsinóros aleurit települ. A durva kavics a kőzetanyagok vizsgálata alapján a közvetlen közelből származik, a forráskőzetek nagy része azonosítható a Villányi-hegység északi részén található, főleg alaphegységi (Csukmai Formáció Templomhegyi Dolomit Tagozata, Mészhegyi Homokkő és Somssichhegyi Mészkő Formáció), kis részben fiatalabb kőzettípusokkal (üregkitöltő vörösagyag és kalcit). A kavicsba települő homok nehézásvány-összetétele a közvetlen fekü felső-triász Mészhegyi és Somssichhegyi Formációval rokonítható. Szintén rövid szállítási távolságra utal a kavicsok vegyes, gyenge-jó koptatottsága. A terület emelkedési üteme a fiatal negyedidőszakban legfeljebb ~0,05 mm/év lehetett.

Abstract:
This article explores the highly heterogeneous social structure of female workers at two fish canneries: Kvarner on the island of Lošinj and Plavica on the island of Cres. The heterogenous workforce reflected certain characteristics of Yugoslav society. First, there was regional and ethnic diversity. Second, there were differences created by rapid modernization, especially between educated and uneducated women who possessed different types of knowledge and embodied different behavioral norms. The third set of differences between workers was based on a traditional patriarchal idea of female propriety which existed simultaneously alongside the socialist idea of a “working woman”. Lastly, the position of workers was also shaped through the tension between appreciation of industrial and physical labor in socialism and tourist imagination of the Adriatic coast. Workers’ narratives and the visual material testify to social hierarchies and differences, but also to negotiations of these positions and different affiliations, all of which depended on their various situations and interests. The stories from different factories also point to different possibilities of social relations, interactions and community building. While workers from Kvarner in Lošinj on occasions remained disintegrated, workers from Plavica on Cres traversed boundaries more easily and formed a close-knit network and community. This was due to the different working and living conditions in the two factories, including a policy of organized leisure and social events, which were a consequence of different periods in which the factories operated, different roles that they had in the local community and different factory management.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of scientific research for 2014-2019 on the reaction of early-maturing fiber flax varieties (Linum usitatissimum L.) of the Pskov selection Peresvet, Kvartet, Voskhod and Dobrynya to growing conditions: sowing time, seeding rates (16, 18, 20, 22, 24 million pieces of germinating seeds per 1 ha), doses of nitrogen fertilizers (0, 15, 30, 45 kg of active ingredient (a. i.) per hectare. The hydrothermal coefficient (GTC) for the growing season varied from 0.98 to 1.94. The optimal seeding rate for fiber flax of the Peresvet variety is 22 million pcs /ha, and for the Kvartet variety − 20 million pcs /ha. With these seeding rates the yield of flax fiber was 21.9-20.6 hundred kilograms (centners) per hectare, respectively, that significantly exceeded the yield of fiber with the minimum seeding rate of 1,0-1.7 hkg/ha, respectively, with LSD05 = 0.7-0.9 hkg/ha. The maximum yield of seeds in both varieties was obtained at the minimum seeding rate. The optimal sowing period for the Peresvet variety was the third period (May 8-17th, 2014-2016) and the second period for the Kvartet variety (May 11-20th, 2017-2019). The yield of flax fiber for these varieties significantly exceeded the 1stsowing period by 0.7-2.3 hkg/ha, respectively (LSD05 = 0.6-0.8 hkg/ha ) and amounted to 23.0-21.1 hkg/ha , that of seeds – 9.8-9.1 hkg/ha. The optimal nitrogen doses for R40K60 background are for Voskhod and Kvartet varieties 15 kg a. i./ha, and for the Dobrynya and Peresvet varieties − 30 kg a. i./ha. The yield of flax fiber for them exceeded the control by 1.5-1.3 hkg/ha, respectively (LSD05 = 0.6-0.8 hkg/ha) and 2.7-2.5 hkg/ha (LSD05 = 1,0-0.9 hkg/ha). The payback of 1 kg of nitrogen by flax fiber increase in all varieties was the highest with the minimum dose of N15. Among the varieties, it ranged from 8 to 12.7 kg/kg. The specific removal of food elements per 1 ton of flax straw and flax fiber recommended for use in determining the doses of mineral fertilizers for the planned yield of flax fiber, has been determined.

Abstract:
This paper studies the competition project by the architect Milan Zloković for the Workers Housing Estate of the Kvarner Shipyards in Rijeka,1 1947-8 (Radničko naselje Kvarnerskih brodogradilišta na Rijeci). The principal aim, in addition to presenting this, until now unpublished and largely unknown work of the architect, is to discuss its propositions against the historical and socio-political context of the momentous change of paradigms following the end of World War Two. The paper explores how, through a programmatic shift towards the issues of urbanism, Zloković subtly adapted the design vocabulary of the interwar modern architectural form to the new cultural, political and social circumstances of the postwar years.

Abstract:
In this article, we explore governance structures of the recreational landscape of Kvarken Archipelago in Western Finland, an area where shore displacement occurs due to land rise and emergent (pristine) land is continuously created. Traditionally a production landscape, of fishing and small-scale agriculture, the recreational value of the archipelago has been acknowledged. The area is a popular second home destination and was designated UNESCO World Heritage in 2006. There are roughly 10,000 second homes within the study area, of which 14% are leaseholds located on emergent land. The emergent land thus makes up a common-pool resource system where private and collective use rights overlap. This article aims to understand the implications for recreational use (second home ownership) through interviews with different local stakeholders such as municipality planners, representatives of commons, local communities, and with environmental and land survey authorities. Especially, it sets out to ask, what kinds of value are created within the recreational resource system, what power relationships within the commons steer the management of the recreational resource system, and what are the implications for recreational use of the landscape. The results show different logics of recreational resource management locally in the studied commons. Access to second homes located within the collectively owned emergent land is limited to part-owners of the commons and tend to be less commercialized and also less modernized than privately owned second home plots.
