Full textBackground: Previous research shows that female patients may feel uncomfortable when nursing is performed by male nurses. Probable explanations for this are the male nurse's special position as a minority in health care. Furthermore, the role of caring for and nurturing has not always been an attribute commonly ascribed to men. Purpose: Therefore, this study aims to identify how male nurses and nursing students experience the practice of nursing measures when the patient is a woman. Method: The present study has been designed as a literature review based on 11 articles with a qualitative approach that were analyzed based on the method of metasynthesis. Result: During the analysis, four themes could be identified: "Intimate care", "Touch", "Religious and cultural barriers", "Strategies". Conclusion: The mapping shows that male nurses encounter problems due to their gender. Problems that in turn cause anxiety and stress in different nursing situations which can have a direct impact on the care they provide to patients of the opposite sex. Furthermore, it can affect which specialization the male nurse chooses after completing the education.

Full textThe number of people with another culture is
increasing in Sweden. This change in society brings
consequences in health care that has not any methods
to manage. The Muslim woman’s meeting with the
health care is one of those areas. The aim with this
study was to describe the nurses meeting with female
Muslim patient. The study carried out as a literature
study and the results which based on 9 articles
showed the lack of knowledge about culture and
religion among health care staff. The authors further
believed that to achieve an adequate result with
meeting between staff and patient requires
knowledge about different culture and religion. The
study shows furthermore a necessity for nurses
training individually to create instinct in how their
own cultural opinion affects the nurse in her/his
profession. The patients felt like nurses had a
stereotype to doing their job and got very difficult to
satisfy patients with the needs. In view of the
circumstances it notifies proposals to improvement in
the existing health care through curses and seminars
about culture and religion but even concrete
information about Islam and Muslim female patient’s
needed in an institutional care. Madeleine
Leininger’s theory of culture care was used as the
conceptual framework and support for the study.

Full textBackground: Women that are victims of intimate partner violence seek care more often, but not all of them receive the care that they need. Caregivers can lack knowledge and preparedness to identify abused women. Undetected intimate partner violence can result in negative consequences for both the woman and society. Aim: To describe women’s experiences of being asked about violence in intimate partnership, how they want to be questioned and how they felt when they did not get the question. Method: An integrative literature review based on 10 qualitative articles from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Results: The categories that emerged was; experiences of being questioned, experiences of different approaches, and experiences of not being asked. From these categories, subcategories were built that gathered patients’ thoughts and feelings. Most of the women appreciated being asked about intimate partner violence, but some felt scared when they got the question. Women who were not asked felt that they were not prioritized. Caregivers should define abuse, because the abuse could have been normalized. The caregivers’approach when questioning and the environment are significant if the women choose to admit they are exposed to violence. The question should be asked at different occasions. Conclusion: The question about intimate partner violence is appreciated, but it can also lead to a feeling of fear when answering the question. It is important that nurses dare to ask about violence exposure at different occasions and that the women are well treated in a safe environment. Women can experience that they are not prioritized if no one asks the question.

Full textThe aim of the study was to examine the female patient’s experience of the ward round. The survey was done as an empirical study. The method used was qualitative interview with manifest content analysis. The inclusion criteria was woman that has been on the nursing ward at least two days. And could understand and speak the Swedish language. The result from the interviews with ten informants showed that most patients thought that the information was clear and understandable. Some of the patients experienced however that the round was to rapid. There was not given occasion to setting questions and the personal did not listen to the patients. Some patients felt being in a weak position during the round. They experienced frustration and aggressiveness when the round functioned poorly. According to some patients the staffs do not have same uniform quality. The findings of this study showed that the majority of the patients had positive experiences of the ward round. The patients experienced good meetings from the staff and that clear information was given. However, the result shows that when clear information not was given and when openness with the patient and staff did not exist it is the patient that is hit. It is therefore important with openness between patient and staff and that the given information is clear. The patients experienced a feeling of safety when family members during the ward round were present.

Full textBackground: Obese people often experience illness and low quality of life which can be expressed in physical complications, stigma and discrimination. Obesity surgery is a method to help obese people to lose weight. The majority of people who chose obesity surgery are women. Women are thought to be more effected mentally by their obesity in lower BMI than men. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of female patients after obesity surgery. Method: The study was constructed as a general literature review based on eleven scientific articles. Results: The patients experienced that the time after surgery had changed their lives. The experience was both positive and negative. The experience of getting a second chance in life and the experience of changed relationship to food was common feelings. Conclusion: The surgery helps women to eat smaller portions because of the diminished stomach, but doesn’t cure the underlying psychosocial problems they might have before surgery. Nurses have an important task in supporting and guiding these women.

Full textBackground: Nursing has traditionally been predominantly staffed by women and the work title itself has had a female connotation. When men to a larger degree enter nursing, new situations arise which didn’t before when the patients only had female staff to take into consideration. Aim: To investigate and describe the experience of nurses who are male in their care and treatment of women patients in intimate care situations in a hospital setting, as we as the emotional experience of the women clients of having been cared for by nurses who are male. Method: The study was carried out as a literature review through searches in databases containing nursing sciences. Both qualitative and quantitative review templates were used to carry out the quality review. A proven method for content analysis was used to find common themes in the articles, which eventually formed the basis for the result. Result: The study found that male nurses often were afraid of being accused of improprieties by the female patients. In order to avoid misunderstandings, male nurses used different strategies in order to be able to perform intimate care. Conversations of an intimate nature were seen as an equally sensitive matter to the male nurses. From a patient perspective it was discovered that younger female patients preferred to be cared for by nurses of the same gender, while older female patients did not specify the same preference. Intimate touch was something that could evoke strong feelings in the female patient.

Full textBackground: Female genital mutilation is a procedure that has long been carried out in many parts of the world. 196 member countries have joined United Nation's (UN) Convention on the rights of children, to work together to eliminate this kind of malicious practice. Through continuous data collection of female genital mutilation, it predicts a significant rise as the world population increases. Health professionals are familiar with the procedure, but few can identify its different types. Aim: The aim was to describe health professionals’ experiences of caring for patients who have undergone female genital mutilation. Method: The method consists of a literature review based on seven qualitative articles, three quantitative articles and one with mixed method retrieved from three different databases; Cinahl Complete, PubMed and Academic Search Complete. Results: The results are presented under two categories: Lack of knowledge and The complexity of caring. Health professionals expressed a lack of knowledge and experience to nurture and meet women who have undergone female genital mutilation. Many felt that they experienced tumultuous feelings at meetings with women who have undergone female genital mutilation and their families. Seeing the female genitalia altered anatomy with very severe scarring was unmanageable for many health professionals. Discussion: The results were discussed on the basis of Leininger's transcultural nursing theory and the concept of consensus human. The transcultural awareness and the ability of health professionals' to ignore their own ethnocentric approach is the basis for the professional caring.

Full textAim: To examine the extent to which nurses in primary health care ask questions about intimate partner violence to female patients and factors that influence nurses tendency to raise the question. Method: Cross-sectional study in the form of a survey. Nurses (n=81) at 11 primary health care clinics in a Swedish county answered a questionnaire with 13 questions. The response rate was 77 percent. Result: Nurses in primary health care clinics ask their female patients to a small extent if they have experienced violence in an intimate relationship. The most frequently mentioned factor to a nurse asking questions about violence was the suspicion of violence. No statistically significant differences were found between the nurses' tendency to ask questions about violence and whether they had received training on the subject or not. There were no statistical differences seen in the tendency to ask questions when looking at the comparison between those who used the action plan in their clinical work and those who did not. Conclusion: Nurses in health clinics ask, to a small extent, their female patients if they have experienced domestic violence. Nurses lack adequate training on the subject and only use existing action plans to a small extent.

Full textBackground: Obesity is a growing problem in today’s society. Laparoscopic Gastric bypass is performed to help people with obesity lose weight and it is common for these patients to experience postoperative nausea, stomach pains, and headaches after a surgical procedure. There are differences in opinion in earlier studies as to the extent that preoperative nutritional beverages can correlate to the postoperative process.Aim: The aim of this paper was to compare three different preoperative beverages’ effect on postoperative nausea, stomach pains, and headaches after LGBP during the first 24 hours after surgery.Method: A randomised study of quantitative design was performed on one of the Nordic countries’ largest clinics specializing in obesity surgery. A total tally of n=90 women were asked to participate and each received sealed packages containing either carbohydrate beverage, protein beverage, or tap water. Results: Nausea peaked eight hours after surgery, at 7.00 PM, and then returned during the night to preoperative values measured at 6.00 AM. The difference between the carbohydrate and protein beverages is expressed as p=0.2046, and the difference between the carbohydrate beverage and the tap water is expressed as p=0.8722. Stomach pains peaked at arrival to the recovery ward and stabilized two hours later, followed by a slight drop-off during the night but without subsiding entirely. Headache was experienced at stable values in all groups, with some increase at 7.00 PM only to level out during the night. There were no differences between stomach pains and headaches, as expressed by p=0.1569. No statistical significance was observed in any group in the different variables. Conclusion: Preoperative fluid treatment with carbohydrate beverages, protein beverages, or tap water before a LGBP surgery does not significantly affect nausea, stomach pain, or headache after the surgery.

Full textBackground: Intimate partner violence against women is an ongoing public health issue in Sweden and globally. Patients react differently to the violence and sometimes struggle to identify with their exposedness to violence. The healthcare frequently constitutes as first agency for women’s help-seeking and has a responsibility in detecting exposure. The nurse should promote health and ease suffering and plays an important contributive role, in charge of nursing care. Aim: To explore nurses’ experiences and attitudes from meeting with female patients, in an intimate partner violence context. Method: A general literature review with nine qualitative research articles. Results: The result consists of three identified themes: Meeting strategies, Attitudes and feelings and Lack of internal and external resources. Conclusion: Nurses lack adequate training in the subject and experience emotional barriers towards initiating the question of violence. Mandatory routine screening and a supportive workplace were recurrent requests. Nurses and other significant society participants need education and support from the workplace as this probably would conduce to decrease the stigma and suffering of intimate partner violence. Further research is suggested to focus on how the presence of established guidelines may affect nurses’ experiences and care.

Full textWith one million new cases in the world each year, breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. The aim of this literature review was to highlight the registered nurse´s supportive and informative role concerning female breast cancer patients and to illustrate the meaning of this. We wanted to examine what the nurse´s supportive and informative roll involves, what the women´s needs are and finally how the nurse is going to meet those needs. The method was a literature review of 11 scientific articles that was analysed according to Polit, Beck and Hungler (2001). The result shows that there are possibilities to look at information and support, in terms of nursing, as components in a multidimensional construction instead of two separate proceedings. The patient´s need of support and information may change along the course of the disease, a fact the nurse must be sensitive to. This also implies that the nurse establishes a good relationship to the patient. An adequate education that provides the nurse with skills and confidence to perform her work with professionalism is of great importance.

Full textThe aim of this literature study was to describe nurses' attitudes toward female patients who have been victims of spouse abuse. In this descriptive literature study, fifteen scientific articles were used in the result. The articles were of both qualitative and quantitative nature. The nurses felt that domestic violence was a social problem and that they had an important role in the detection of such violence. Several had themselves experienced violence but couldn‟t believe that so many in their vicinity or in the care were affected. Nurses thought that abused women had low self esteem and factors such as economics and children played into why the woman stayed in the violent relationship. The nurses often had a lack of education about the subject and felt uncomfortable in the situation that routinely screening all female patients for domestic violence. Education increased awareness and nurses felt more confident to talk about domestic violence with their female patients. The study found barriers to routine screening, as time constraints and lack of opportunity to talk separately with the patient. More education and knowledge of the subject is desirable so these women can be discovered and be helped by the health services.

Full textBackground: There are many reasons as to why a person receives a bowel ostomy, and this can affect the person’s view of their own body. A person's perception of the body is strongly linked to sexuality that is an important part of people's lives. Stoma surgery can also cause physical damage that causes problems in the sex life of the operated person. Patients with stoma will appear in all care settings, and it is therefore important for all nurses to be able to treat them. Aim: The aim was to illustrate how patients with an ostomy experience their sexuality Method: The method was a literature review where 15 scientific articles were reviewed, five of which were qualitative, nine quantitative and one used mixed method. The articles were identified through combinations of different keywords in the databases CINAHL Complete and Pubmed with a time span of the years 2008-2017. Results: In the results four main themes and six sub themes could be identified. The main themes were A Changed Body, Physical Sexual Function, A Changed Sex Life and Support from the Surroundings. The results showed that many patients experience problems with their sexuality related to their stoma, both physical problems and obstacles as a result of the patient's own thoughts about one's stoma. An increased need for support and information was also identified by the patients, both from an eventual partner and from the healthcare. Discussion: The result is discussed based on Parse's theory of humanbecoming. The discussion addresses topics about the lack of support and information for patients from the healthcare. The lack of research into women's sexual experiences with a stoma in comparison to the research that exists around men is also discussed.
