Abstract:
The visible condition of a person in bodily pain or of a person who has lost autonomy, social status or self–representation, reveals to some degree an invisible reality which is present in every human being. Assuming the validity of this premise, my primary purpose in the following paper is first to reflect upon social and cultural attitudes that consider disability and vulnerability as a boundary and a threat; and secondly, to propose an alternative in transgressing the differences of socio - anthropological boundaries in order to enable dynamic communication with fellow human beings, and ultimately, to bring about the true human flourishing. The structure of my argument is threefold. In a first part my focus is stressed upon concerns of those living with a physical condition of disability and a mainstream socio–cultural attitudes towards it. In the second part, my attention will be on the meaning of vulnerability associated with, but distinct from the notion of disability. Thirdly, I will elucidate my argument with concrete examples from the L´Arche community - where people with and without disabilities are living together in mutual interdependency and cooperation.

Abstract:
Experiments on concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) model arches with new-type dumbbell-shaped section have been carried out, concentrated loading at crown and L/4 section respectively. Applied with large general program ANSYS, a finite element calculation model was set up for the model arch, by means of this model the main parameters including arch axis coefficient, ratio of rise to span, slenderness ratio, and steel ratio are analyzed. Based on the discussion of influence of parameter variation on nonlinear characteristics and ultimate load-carrying capacity of model arch, the theoretical basis is established for the development of this structure and the conclusion can be taken as reference in practice use and further research work.

Abstract:
Injection of radioactively labeled microspheres and blood O2 analysis from central vascular sites was utilized to assess intracardiac shunts in the unanesthetized and unrestrained turtle, Pseudemys scripta, at 15 degrees C. Both methods indicated a simultaneously occurring right-to-left (R-L) and left-to-right (L-R) shunt during ventilation and apnea. During ventilation, the O2 method estimated a R-L shunt of 24%. In contrast, injection of microspheres during ventilation estimated a R-L shunt of 65%, which was significantly greater than the value determined from the O2 method. During apnea, both methods indicated a significantly larger R-L shunt. Estimates of the R-L shunt from O2 analysis were between 60 and 90% of the venous return. The R-L shunt estimated from the O2 content of left aortic arch blood was significantly greater than the value determined from right aortic arch blood. During apnea, the microsphere method estimated a R-L shunt of 79%, which was in the intermediate range calculated by the O2 method using two aortic arches. Our results verify previous reports of significant differences in R-L shunt levels between ventilation and apnea during the normal ventilatory cycle of turtles.

Abstract:
The neural arches of the vertebrae of Scyliorhinus canicula were studied in detail. The extremities of each half arch consist of two pyramids of fibrous cartilage. These contain rows of convergent collagen fibers in the shape of a fan. The cells are arranged in series without forming real columns and without becoming enlarged. The central area of each arch contains a band of calcified cartilage with degenerating cells and numerous gaps that are invaded by urchin-shaped calcifications. This blade of cartilage is squeezed between an internal band of lamellar bone and an external nonlamellar zone of bone. The internal bony zone is bordered by osteoblasts and contains elongated osteocytes, many showing signs of degeneration. The external zone contains osteocytes joined by small canaliculi. Areas of resorption by mononucleated cells can be observed at the border of the external bone zone. These cells project digitations that the calcified border where fragmented collagen fibers are present; they react positively to acid phosphatases and show numerous signs of pynocytosis.[Journal translation]

Abstract:
As a new type structural member, the steel arch with web openings combines the features of both arches and members with web openings and its applications has been found. Studies on in-plane stability behavior of two-hinged arches with web hexagonal openings are made using Eigen buckling model of the finite element software ANSYS. The buckling load and buckling mode are obtained and the in-plane buckling mode is antisymmetrical. It is shown that buckling load decreases gradually as the circumcircle radius of openings increases and it increases as the gap between openings increases through analysis of buckling load with different parameters such as r/h, g/h, f/l. It can be found that the structural efficiency is the highest when the radius of openings is 0.3h with the aid of optimized function.

Abstract:
The weakness of traditional dumbbell-shaped section is that when concrete is filled into the web space, great stress is likely to produce cracks in the weld sealing between steel tube and web plates. In order to avoid this condition, a new-type dumbbell-shaped section is proposed. Experiments on concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) model arches with new-type dumbbell-shaped section have been carried out, concentrated loading at crown and L/4 section respectively. The result indicated that the new-type CFST arch has good elastic-plastic behavior and high strength, no local buckling appeared during the whole loading process, its in-plane mechanic behavior is similar with that of the CFST arch with single-tube. The dual nonlinear finite element calculation model is set up for the model arch, by means of this model the load-deflection curves during the loading process and the ultimate load-carrying capacity is analyzed.

Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the efficiency of strengthening of plain concrete (PLC) arches using UHPC. Thirteen segment arch models reinforced using normal concrete (NC, group N) or ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC, group U) were tested in this study. The failure mode, strain distribution, and calculation of bearing capacity of PLC arch bridges reinforced with UHPC arch circle were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the technology of chiseling and planting bars could provide sufficient bond strength on the interface between the UHPC reinforcement layer and NC substrate. Both groups showed one or two failure modes of the concrete crushing of the original structure and the interface failure. However, no cracks appeared in the UHPC reinforcement layer, indicating that there was still large bearing potential. The strain distribution of the whole section in group N was consistent with the plane section assumption. But, this phenomenon was not observed in group U since the strain of the reinforcement layer was ahead (R-side loading) or behind (L-side loading) that of original structures. A simplified calculation formula was used for calculating the bearing capacity of group U. It was accurate for specimens loaded on the L-side, and an enhancement coefficient of 0.15 should be considered for R-side loading specimens.

Abstract:
Goldenhar syndrome was first described by Maurice Goldenhar in 1952 it involves abnormalities in the first and second branchial arches. This syndrome appears to have varying degree of presentation from mild to severe form. Different pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed .Oculo auriculo vertebral syndrome which includes reduction in blood flow resulting in focal haemorrhage in the first and second branchial arches. In addition there may be cardiac vertebral and CNS defects. A male baby 30-32 wks, preterm SGA was admitted in NICU for evaluation of Congenital Malformations which includes swelling of the anterior border of both eyes with b/l preauricular ear tags, malformed pinna, high arched palate and micrognatia ophthalmology examination revealed b/l limbal dermoid inferotemporal aspect. ECHO done revealed ASD 4mm.CT scan showed obstructive hydrocephalus. Treatment of the condition varies according to the severity. Ophthalmic treatment aimed first because of amblyogenic risk. Craniofacial surgery in view of severe micrognathia systemic treatment may be related to cardiac, renal and CNS malformations. Goldenhar Syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly, with cosmetic defects whose treatment may pose numerous challenges with multidisciplinary approach for optimal management.

Abstract:
An isolated perfused gill preparation was developed for the study of the association of gill pathogens with the branchial tissue. The preparation consisted of an excised branchial arch from common carp ( Cyprinus carpio L., minimum weight 300g), perfused via the afferent branchial artery. Filtered and heparinised Cortland solution was used as the perfusion fluid and infused by means of a drip (3-litre bag). The average perfusion rate was 1.5ml/minute/arch/kg body weight. The outflowing perfusate was collected from a cannula in the efferent branchial artery. The individual gill arch was suspended in a circular organ chamber filled with Ringer solution, which was aerated and kept at a constant temperature of 20°C. Unperfused gill arches maintained in Ringer solution at the same temperature served as controls. Cortland solution proved to be a satisfactory perfusion fluid, maintaining the perfused gills in a healthy condition for at least 4 hours with no, or only slight, oedema after 90 minutes, and slight or moderate oedema after 4 hours. The unperfused gill displayed excessive necrosis and loss of architecture after 4 hours. The Cortland perfused gill apparatus could thus prove to be an alternative ex vivo model of particular use in the study of the early interaction of gill associated pathogens with the branchial tissue.

Abstract:

Paris, EHESS, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003EHES0055.

Full text
Abstract:
The Platonic and preSocratic allegories of the winged vehicle are the object of very numerous examinations, from Plotin and Proclus by means of the triadic theology. Philon d’Alexandrie, Pic de la Mirandole and the haggadic and cabalistic texts gave them the Alliance Arche representation. Kandinsky and Chagall painted the inflamed vehicle of Elie, in accordance with the symbol of takeoff. Dante, Hugo, Lamartine, Vigny, like poets, sang in humanist way the Homeric myth, the Platonic allegory or the religious parable. Hence the human gesture assures to it much more than a survival, but a real intellectual evolution for the benefit of a constant renewal of the understanding and the thought. Put in movement by Plato, the Homeric myth became a ‘‘logioned’’ myth by means of the speculative speech, but also a containing sign which collected the halves of the speech : belief and reason, through the nave unifying. In the run-up towards the One, the harness of the soul becomes a clearly circular symbol. Consequently, the analysis of a myth declined in an allegorical multitude of representations requires an analogical study and an interdisciplinary link between the human sciences by the coming together of various schools of thought : from preSocratics to neoPlatonics, from mystic Christian to mystic Jewish, from Scholasticism to Humanism, by the way of two important disciplines. A philological approach puts texts in competition, and hermeneutic adapts the currents of thoughts to an ideal of wisdom. They have a direct relationship to the universal and structural alternative of the pratice and the theoretical, like the moving image of eternity

Barbero, Daniel Robert. "L’ Archê chez Platon." Nice, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005NICE2026.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is trying to present the Archê as a supereminent fold that determines the double semantic area of the originary and the authority. Plato conforms the word to the current use, but concerning the thing itself, it appeared to us that the platonic thought tries to organize its sovereign superiority, exteriority, transitivity according to the relation of mimêsis. At whatever level of the intelligible or the sensible, the mimetic relation has the property of maintaining the pattern in pull back. The absolute pattern (object in the VIth book of the Republic of the promise of the mégiston mathêma) is the sovereign Good. In itself, the Good is maintaining itself in a transcendant statute withdrawing beyond the beings, and at the level of its translation in the logos, the good is maintained distant by the suspension of the discursive mode of the dialectic, replaced by analogy. According to its nature, the Good, conceived or projected as Archê is desinvolved of the causal chains that are developping themselves in the becoming, and because of that, its power cannot be anything but no-coercitive. The Good, as well as the whole intelligible, withdraws itself within the aion, of which the time is a mobile image. However beautiful it appears to the astonished soul of the philosopher, the cosmic procession is nothing but an analogic derivation of a pattern whose pure and simple beauty has determined in the conscience of the Demiurge the admirative emotion and the imitative desire. The philosopher is therefore the man who, by courtesy of the Noûs, accorded by the ascetism to the Intellect of the Demiurge, recovers energetically the originary ant initial beauty of the Archê in the derivated beauty of the images dissipated in the inercy of the chôra. This recovering is called périagogê in the VIIth book of the Republic. By definition insubstantial, the image is nevertheless no total illusion, no-being, because it vehicles a remainder declassified of the being, who, treated as an iconic support, can be converted to its pattern. The philosopher, master of himself by the command of the Noûs is the agent of this liberal conversion towards the Archê, while the philodoxer, slave of his epithumic greediness, gives himself up to the inercy of the chôra, and seizes the images only in the processive sense that sets between the conscience and the being a screen upon which will sparkle the pretences made cost-effective by the sophist. The duty of the philosopher is therefore to save the phenomenons reporting them to the sovereignty of the pattern, and to save the city applying the model of the Good in the ethic exercise of the arétê, and getting ready to assume a political sovereignty which indexation to the archê constitutes a sufficent guaranty of no-coercition to set the most efficient rampart against any drift towards tyranny

This city is the third most populated city of lran which is also rich in history, art and architecture. The largest river of lranian Plateau in central part Iran which name is Zayandeh-Rud also crosses Isfahan and from the past to the present day, this river played an important role in the formation of the civilization and development of the city of lsfàhan. Therefore, due to the constant development of Isfahan throughout history, as well as the existence of a Zayandeh-Rud flow, numerous bridges were built with a various function in this city. These bridges were designed to connect water, wind, nature and the human being in a particular architectural concept. They were not just designed for passage of the individuals or just for connecting two banks of river, but their purpose was also to link spiritual advancernent and human understanding. They have been designed in the way which makes the pedestrians to stay, watch the beauty of nature, listen to it and think. Since the Isfahan’s bridges have different functions, they can be categorized into inhabited bridges.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim is to produce a powerful antioxidant, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (3,4-DHPA) from L-tyrosine in the hyperthermophilic and acidophilus archaea, Sulfolobus solfataricus 98/2. Extremophiles microorganisms have resistant enzymes and interesting for industry. Cultures have been carried out in controlled bioreactor four conditions: (i) in the presence of glucose with or without L-tyrosine, (ii) in the presence of phenol with or without L-tyrosine. It has been shown that 3,4-DHPA is synthesized only in the presence of phenol and L-tyrosine. The genes encoding enzymes involved in the metabolic and potentially responsible for the synthesis of 3,4-DHPA pathway have been identified by sequence homology in S. solfataricus.Des transcriptomic and proteomic studies have therefore been initiated to confirm these hypothesis and attempt to characterize the enzymes involved in these pathways. Several toluene-4-monooxygenase (T4MO) and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase involved in the metabolism of phenol and potentially in the degradation pathway of L-tyrosine were identified. Their production is subjected to a dependent transcriptional regulation of the presence of phenol. The analysis of the corresponding genomic regions has highlighted a consensus region that could be involved in the binding of a transcription factor in the regulation of phenol. These studies helped to determine the one hand the conditions under which 3,4-DHPA is synthesized, secondly to identify enzymes that intervene in the metabolism of L-tyrosine

Toone, Mark James. "Evangelicalism in transition : a comparative analysis of the work and theology of D. L. Moody and his protégés, Henry Drummond and R. A. Torrey." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/460.

Abstract:
By the turn of the twentieth century, British and American evangelical Christianity was sharply divided over, among other things, the issues of biblical authority, the nature of the person and work of Christ and the validity of modern scientific thought. Dwight L. Moody, the major evangelical figure of the late nineteenth century, found himself in the centre of this controversy. As a man of conservative theology yet ecumenical spirit, both the Fundamentalists and the liberal evangelicals 'claimed' him for their cause. The tension which developed between these two sides is well illustrated in the lives and ministries of Moody's protégés, R. A. Torrey and Henry Drummond, who ended up on opposite sides of the modernist/Fundamentalist debate, one perpetuating Moody's theological beliefs and the other his broad, irenic spirit. Having examined the religious historical context in both Scotland and America, this study will consider Moody's development as an ecumenically minded evangelist. Furthermore, both in the Scottish and in the American settings, it will consider the work of Drummond and Torrey, examining Moody's influence upon them and tracing the development of each man's thought and career from the time of their early contacts with the great evangelist. It will explore the nature of the modern/Fundamentalist controversy within late nineteenth century evangelicalism as illustrated in the lives of these three men: Moody the mentor-father figure and Torrey and Drummond as unlikely stepbrothers. In addition to the theological issues, it will be concerned to investigate the spirit in which this debate was carried on. Most importantly, it will argue that, contrary to the claims of Fundamentalists to the present day, their movement did not perpetuate the work of D. L. Moody because it lost the warm catholicity which was integral to Moody's ministry.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis studies the different ways the novelists give account of a natural disaster - drought, and how the alchemy of writing transmutes this element making it possible to reenvisage narrative structures as vehicles for the expression of ideological positions. The four novels analysed are: Jacques Roumain's Gouverneurs de la rosée (1944), Mandé- Alpha Diarra's Sahel! Sanglante sécheresse (1981), Modibo Sounkalo Kei͏̈ta's L'Archer bassari (1984) and Rachel de Queiroz's L'année de la grande sécheresse(1986), [originally O QUINZE, (1930)]. In these novels, the phenomenon of drought has the status of a destabilising element, a catalyst or a backdrop against which the plot unfolds. The rhetoric of the texts describes natural elements in human terms and the authors identify completely with the point of view of the characters which reveals the deep sorrow into which hearts are plunged. By and large therefore, drought in literature helps to portray the misery of the human condition

Abstract:
<p>Arched structures have been in use more than three thousand years. The span length of the arch in bridge construction has already exceeded 550 meters. Even longer arch bridges have been designed. The development of arch structures has not been as fast as in cable-stayed bridges during the resent 30 years, when cable-stayed bridges have reached spans more than 1100 m. However, arch structures are becoming more common, especially in bridges.</p><p>The purpose of this paper is to arouse interest in arch structures as well as to open up basic issues related to optimal arch design. The paper discusses the parabolic arch, the catenary arch, and the constant stress arch. The optimum heights, which produce the minimum amount of material, are solved. The importance of form- finding design is emphasized.</p><p>The optimum heights are solved mathematically. In addition, a non-linear iteration procedure, based on vector algebra solution, is used in finding the optimum shape of the moment-less arch. The applications of traditional graphic static and the usage of vector algebra are useful practical tools for designers, especially during the preliminary design stages.</p><p>The maximum theoretical arch spans are remarkably long. At a stress level of 500 MPa, the ultimate span of a steel arch is 19 635 m. The optimal heights of the arches are bigger than traditionally expected. For example, for a parabolic arch, the optimum span to height relation l/h is 2.309. It can also be mentioned that the optimum height ratio of 2.962, derived for the catenary arch, has so far been an unknown figure for designers.</p><p>The theoretical maximal dimensions resolved in the paper indicate that the dimensions of arches can be increased further.</p>

Abstract:
Experiments were carried out in a recirculating water channel regarding the flow around stationary circular cylinders with low aspect ratio piercing the water free surface. Eight different aspect ratios were tested, namely L/D = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0; this range corresponds to aspect ratio related to circular offshore systems, such as spar and monocolumn platforms. Force was measured using a six degree-of-freedom load cell and Strouhal number is inferred through the transverse force fluctuation frequency. The range of Reynolds number covers 10,000 < Re < 50,000. PIV measurements were performed in some aspect ratio cases, namely 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 for Reynolds number equal to 43,000. The results showed a decrease in drag force coefficients with decreasing aspect ratio, as well as a decrease in Strouhal number with decreasing aspect ratio. The PIV showed the existence of an arch-type vortex originated in the cylinder free end.

Abstract:
The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect is observed in flowing electrolytic fluids and their interactions with magnetic fields. The magnetic field (B0), when perpendicular with the electrolytic fluid flow (μ), causes the shift of the charged particles in the fluid to shift across the length of the vessel (L) normal to the plane of B0 and flow, creating a voltage (VMHD) observable through voltage potential measurements across the flow (Eqn. 1)[1].(1)VMHD=∫0Lu⇀×B0⇀·dL⇀In the medical field, this phenomenon is commonly encountered inside of a human body inside of an MRI machine (Fig. 1). The effect appears most prominently inside the aortic arch due to orientation and size, and is a large contributing factor to noise observed in intra-MRI ECGs [2, 3]. Traditionally, this MHD induced voltage (VMHD) was filtered out to obtain clean intra-MRI ECGs, but recent studies have shown that the VMHD induced in a vessel is related to the blood flow through it (stroke volume in the case of the aortic arch) [4]. Further proof of this relationship can be shown from the increase in VMHD measured from periphery blood vessels during periods of elevated heart rate from exercise stress, when compared to baseline state [5]. Previously, a portable device was built to utilize induced VMHD as an indicator of flow [6]. The device was capable of showing change in blood flow, utilizing a blood flow metric obtained from VMHD, however a quantitative relationship between VMHD and blood flow has yet to be established. This study aims to define the relationship between induced VMHD and magnetic field strength in a controlled setting. Through modulating the distance between a pair of magnets around a flow channel, we hope to better realize the relationship between magnetic field strength and induced VMHD with constant flow and electrolytic solution concentration.
