Abstract:
Approximate pattern matching has a wide range of applications and, depending on the type of approximation, there exist numerous algorithms for solving it. In this article we focus on texts which originate from OCRed documents, whose errors quite often have a particular form and are far from being random errors. We introduce a new variant of the edit distance metric, where apart from the traditional edit operations, two new operations are supported. The combination operation allows two or more symbols from a string x to be interpreted as a single symbol and then "matched" (or aligned) against a single symbol of a second string y. Its dual is the operation of a split, where a single symbol from x is broken down into a sequence of two or more other symbols, that can then be matched against an equal number of symbols from y. Our algorithm requires O(L) time for preprocessing, and O(mnk) time for computing the edit distance, where L is the total length of all the valid combinations/splits, m and n are the lengths of the two strings under comparison and k is an upper bound on the number of valid splits for any single symbol. The expected running time is O(mn).

Abstract:
Keynote paper presented at the International Leucaena Conference, 1‒3 November 2018, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.Strategies to breed sterile leucaena for Western Australia include plant breeding and biotechnology tools to generate sterile lines at both the tetraploid and triploid ploidy levels. For tetraploids, the main target species is the commercial Leucaena leucocephala, that is well known for its potential as a high-quality, productive and persistent forage. Gene editing technologies (CRISPR) will be utilized to edit out flowering genes and develop a non-flowering L. leucocephala. For triploids, the strategy is to cross tetraploid species (L. leucocephala and/or L. diversifolia) with diploid species to generate sterile triploid hybrids. The diploid parents will include species that have good forage attributes such as L. collinsii, L. macrophylla, L. shannonii and L. pulverulenta. Several of these triploid crosses have already been created by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Perth, Western Australia) and will be evaluated in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia for their agronomic performance and sterility. Vegetative propagation will be required for the tetraploid gene-edited non-flowering L. leucocephala. Triploids can either be vegetatively propagated, once generated, or generated via a seed production nursery.

Abstract:
Receptor editing is a mechanism of self-tolerance used in newly generated B cells. The expressed heavy (H) or light (L) chain of an autoreactive receptor is replaced by upstream V genes which eliminate or modify autoreactivity. Editing of anti-DNA receptors has been characterized in anti-DNA transgenic mouse models including 3H9, 3H9/56R, and their revertant 3H9GL. Certain L chains, termed editors, rescue anti-DNA B cells by neutralizing or modifying DNA binding of the H chain. This editing mechanism acts on the natural H chain repertoire; endogenous H chains with anti-DNA features are expressed primarily in combination with editor L chains. We ask whether a similar set of L chains exists in the human repertoire, and if so, do they edit H chains with anti-DNA signatures? We compared the protein sequences of mouse editors to all human L chains and found several human L chains similar to mouse editors. These L chains diminish or veto anti-DNA binding when expressed with anti-DNA H chains. The human H chains expressed with these L chains also have relatively high arginine (Arg) content in the H chain complementarity determining region (H3), suggesting that receptor editing plays a role in establishing tolerance to DNA in humans.

Abstract:
Motifs are biologically significant patterns found in DNA/protein sequences. Given a set of biological sequences, the problem of identifying the motifs is very challenging. This problem has been well studied in computational biology. Identifying motifs through experimental processes is extremely expensive and time consuming. This is one of the factors influencing computational biologists to come up with novel computational methods to predict motifs. Several motif models have been proposed in the literature and for each model numerous algorithms have been devised. Three popular motif models are (l, d)-motif search or Planted Motif Search (PMS), Simple Motif Search (SMS), and Edit-distance based Motif Search (EMS). For PMS and SMS several algorithms have been proposed and implemented. On the other hand, even though some algorithms exist in the literature for the problem of EMS, no implementations of these algorithms are known. This is mainly because the proposed algorithms are complex. In this paper we present an elegant algorithm for EMS. We have implemented this algorithm and compared it against 14 other algorithms in terms of sensitivity and specificity. Our experimental results indicate that the new algorithm is very competitive in practice.

Abstract:
Approximate multi-pattern matching is an important issue that is widely and frequently utilized, when the pattern contains variable-length wildcards. In this paper, two suffix array-based algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem. Suffix array is an efficient data structure for exact string matching in existing studies, as well as for approximate pattern matching and multi-pattern matching. An algorithm called MMSA-S is for the short exact characters in a pattern by dynamic programming, while another algorithm called MMSA-L deals with the long exact characters by the edit distance method. Experimental results of Pizza & Chili corpus demonstrate that these two newly proposed algorithms, in most cases, are more time-efficient than the state-of-the-art comparison algorithms.

Abstract:
At De oratore 2.90-92, the mutili (M) omit a passage in which the orator L. Fufius is severely criticized. It is solely transmitted by the integri (L). In the present paper I argue that the ‘lacuna’ in M is not accidental: it is more probable that Cicero himself, not long after he had completed and published De oratore, revised 2.90-92 and deleted the Fufius-passage. The outburst against Fufius is to be seen as a covert attack on one of Cicero’s personal enemies, the Caesarian Q. Fufius Calenus, and Cicero’s revision of 2.90-92 can well be understood as being due to changed circumstances, notably his improved relationship with Caesar. While M contains the revised version of 2.90-92, L does not contain the original one. This can be gathered from certain problems which mar the L-text. These problems are, in my view, to be connected with Cicero’s later revision of the passage: it seems likely that L’s text is due to contamination of the two versions. The original version can no longer be retrieved with certainty in all detail. Under the circumstances, the best we can do is to edit 2.90-92 according to the revised version (= M).

Abstract:

Ricci, Davide. "Modalita Nava come tecnica di monitoraggio e di ventilazione artificiale in terapia intensiva." Bachelor's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/6045/.

Full text
Abstract:

D'ALOIA, ADRIANO. "L'EMPATIA NELL'ESPERIENZA FILMICA." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/788.

Abstract:
In recent decades film studies have shifted their focus to the emotional and bodily level of film experience. By adopting a phenomenological approach, this dissertation deals with the strategies of the film spectator’s involvement in contemporary mainstream narrative films. Chapter 1 reconstructs the meanings of the notion of empathy in philosophy, aesthetics, psychology and neurocognitive research. Chapter 2 traces a genealogy of empathy in film theories, from Bergsonism to Cognitivism, and evaluates the relevance of Simulation-Theory to film studies. Chapter 3 explores the relevance of Edith Stein’s phenomenological theory of empathy to film theory and assumes it is a theoretical model to investigate the “intensified” nature of both film design style and film reception style. A film is constructed and experienced on the basis of the “circuit of empathy”, a stratified system of different species of empathetic interaction, acting at senso-motorial, perceptual, cognitive and emotional levels with the aim of generating both an aesthetic and an inter-subjective experience. Chapter 4 analyses a vast corpus of contemporary films and focuses on four “aerial figures” of involvement and their combination: acrobatics, falling, flying, and non-gravitational movements, both of the actor’s human body and of the film’s anthropomorphic body. In the Conclusions, it is argued that the spectator internally imitates these “double” movements and inadvertently experiences the intentionality implied in the figures. Contemporary film spectators empathetically “get”, with their own sensibility, the senses of an experience that transcends the immanence of the film and contributes to the process of “giving” sense to the World, the Other, and the Self.

This place is one of the main recreation and leisure areas of the city, formed by six kilometres of waterfront, corresponding to a differentiated area through the coast. This space has beach huts with varied profiles: while some more simple huts persist, great complexes are being developed, building even water parks on the beach area. This study analyses relations between:i) spatial configuration (in geometric and mainly topological terms) based on the Social Logic of Space; ii) edified typology (analysing capacity, landscap treatment and program of the huts); and iii) use and environmental perception of the beach by its frequenters. There are consistent relations between the type of hut and their localization in the urban grid, of which were identified groups with different patterns: segregated (north, central and south) and integrated (north: more integrated. and south: less integrated). Such relations also reflect, in varied patterns of use and environmental perception. In spite of their strong economy, the beach huts find themselves in a fragile legal situation because they occupy the beach area, so that this study may come to assist the decision-making for the future of the region. For a sustainable development of the area by those responsible and managers it is necessary to evaluate the cultural importance of the huts at Praia do Futuro, understanding their occupation and uses.<br>O objetivo dessa disserta??o ? analisar a import?ncia das barracas da Praia do Futuro para os usu?rios e para a cidade de Fortaleza no Cear? por meio da compreens?o de rela??es entre categorias morfol?gicas no contexto urbano e edil?cio dos estabelecimentos e seus padr?es de uso. Abstract:

Abstract:
In the previous chapters, we discussed problems involving an exact match of string patterns. We now turn to problems involving similar but not necessarily exact pattern matches. There are a number of similarity or distance measures, and many of them are special cases or generalizations of the Levenshtein metric. The problem of evaluating the measure of string similarity has numerous applications, including one arising in the study of the evolution of long molecules such as proteins. In this chapter, we focus on the problem of evaluating a longest common subsequence, which is expressively equivalent to the simple form of the Levenshtein distance. The Levenshtein distance is a metric that measures the similarity of two strings. In its simple form, the Levenshtein distance, D(x , y), between strings x and y is the minimum number of character insertions and/or deletions (indels) required to transform string x into string y. A commonly used generalization of the Levenshtein distance is the minimum cost of transforming x into y when the allowable operations are character insertion, deletion, and substitution, with costs δ(λ , σ), δ(σ, λ), and δ(σ1, σ2) , that are functions of the involved character(s). There are direct correspondences between the Levenshtein distance of two strings, the length of the shortest edit sequence from one string to the other, and the length of the longest common subsequence (LCS) of those strings. If D is the simple Levenshtein distance between two strings having lengths m and n, SES is the length of the shortest edit sequence between the strings, and L is the length of an LCS of the strings, then SES = D and L = (m + n — D)/2. We will focus on the problem of determining the length of an LCS and also on the related problem of recovering an LCS. Another related problem, which will be discussed in Chapter 6, is that of approximate string matching, in which it is desired to locate all positions within string y which begin an approximation to string x containing at most D errors (insertions or deletions).
