Abstract:

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: An airframe parachute (“Chute”) available in certain aircraft is designed to lower the airplane safely to the ground for emergency situations that occur 500 ft (152 m) above ground level (AGL): the “Chute altitude envelope.” This study will explore the change in Chute use before and after 2012 to better understand factors that increased usage and improved accident outcomes.METHODS: Using the public National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident database from January 1, 2001, through August 31, 2018, a regression model was developed to identify factors that may predict Chute use.RESULTS: In accidents occurring after January 1, 2013, pilots were 5 times more likely to use the Chute, while 2.9 times less likely to use the Chute when the accident involved pilot-related causes. The presence of passengers did not predict Chute use. Injuries were likely to be more severe when the Chute was used outside the Chute altitude envelope.DISCUSSION: In contrast to General Aviation (GA) overall, accidents outcomes in aircraft equipped with a Chute have seen great improvements between 2013 and 2018, with increased use of the Chute and improved injury outcomes. Results suggest that changes to pilot training in 2012 have increased the social acceptance of Chute use. Results highlight increased risk of injury outcomes for Chute use in accidents that occur outside the Chute altitude envelope.Kirby J. Abstract:
Sartre et I. Calvino.
This thesis follows a chronological study of the evolution of the mythical image of the raven in European literature. In the first part it describes the sacred and divine origins of the raven in simple tales and written myths and presents the raven as both divinity and a companion of divinities. The passage from myth, to superstition and magic, transforms its image as sacred raven into that of diabolical raven. The influence of the Judeo-Christian complex completes this negative image, which began as both good and evil. In tales, legends, and fables, the biblical image merges with the mythic corpus. In the second part, we see that in 19th and 20th century literature its role changes from that of an acting personality to a sign or a symbol. H. Heine, W. Muller, E. Allen Poe and F. Nietzsche use the raven as the symbol of all the ills of the century during the romantic period. It is the symbol of war and interior and exterior upheaval in A. Rimbaud, G. Trakl, J. Giono, J-P. Sartre and I. Calvino. Its symbolism is again double as in mythology - at once destroyer and creator. For F. Zorn, the raven is the symbol of death and deliverance. In the third part we see that the corruption of the image of the raven as an active personality and as a symbol is thrown into question. With irony and exaggeration, W. Busch and C. Morgenstern present ravens that are grotesque caricatures of the sacred and diabolic bird. The importance of the image of the raven in European civilization is confirmed in painting. It symbolizes, as in literature, external trouble and strife and the interior psychology of the artist. The image of the raven in literature is an example of the constant exchanges between different civilizations, of communication between people and embodies their common aspirations

Abstract:
With the increase of life expectancy, psychological writings about ageing have not developed as much as those concerning adults and children. It seemed to us interesting, fascinating and fruitful to think about this senescence period by restating the « somat/psyche » duality throughout the deterioration event. The use of a quantitative and qualitative methodology allows us to tackle the fall event as a traumatic experience according to physical data (fragile ou valid subject, somatic or psychomotor consequences…), temporal (since the last fall, moment of the fall, objective and subjective age of the fall…) and psychic (defenses set up, reminiscence, the work of getting old…) So we specifically looked at the turning point of this event in the context of expensive treatment of conflicts emerging at that time to discover obsessive defense mechanisms and primary maternal regression. In consequence, the development of psychological and psychoanalytical reasoning on the observation of the fall of the ageing subject can only be appreciated by not « falling » in the belief of a unique link of casuality, within an indistinguishable demographic class where age would be seen as an etiological factor. The use of quantitative and qualitative analysis of the discourse gives access to postfall reactive data but also to psychic treatment methods of the conflicts and affects which emerged from this event. We combined verbal communication with the drawing technique to get an insight of the mental images set in the historical narrative of memory. The fall is then exposed as an action, to mitigate the failure of the protective shield system and the capacities of development and connection to the narcissistic injury of senescence. However, it can also be appreciated as a coming back an elaborative resumption of attachment that leads to an inevitable end. It was then that "what is called a reason for living is also an excellent reason for dying" (Albert Camus). Indeed writings on the subject of the psychological deterioration of the ageing person are mainly studied in the context of the psychopathological or deficient process of the frail person in question, hospitalized without really taking into account the individual and collective complex alterations common to the process of ageing. We therefore concentrated on the psychic process of a valid old subject in order to glean more clinical reflections on the type of anxiety and object interaction. The TAT/SAT proposed concerning our study has established the psychic constitution of an internal model of an insecure relationship of the ageing, linked with an infringing relational experience with a failing and disappointing maternal object

Abstract:
Like other arts, the movies, under Vichy, did not escape to diverse measures of restriction that regulate its production, its distribution and its exploitation. In order to divert the attention of German and Vichyssoises authorities, many producers of this period expressed their ideas through poetic, pseudohistorical and fantastic themes. Among these is Henri-Georges Clouzot, who, in his work "The raven", knew how to make of a commonplace news item a pessimistic feeling of a whole country. Considered as the flashing movie of the occupation, "The raven" deals particularly with the individual's psychology, and evokes a general atmosphere of hatred, denunciation and jealousy

Abstract:
I had the opportunity to develop my thesis during the Internship Program at F.lli Righini, a world leader in designing and manufacturing offshore equipment. I was tasked with improving the mechanical efficiency of an umbilical lay system. Instead of laying the cable on the sea floor, the Client wished to have it partially floating. A new system had to be devised whereby a number of buoyancy modules had to be installed on the cable itself, an operation complicated by the fact that it could not be performed by a traditional fixed chute. To solve this challenge, Righini suggested an innovative kinematic chute able to perform a certain rotation, thereby fully satisfying the requisites. The aim of this master thesis is to optimize this prototype system. A MATLAB code will be created to conduct a meticulous structural analysis of the kinematic chute, to see if the piston which activates the whole chute rotation can be optimized in terms of weight and cost.

Abstract:
Abstract The ingress of hot annulus gas into stator-rotor cavities is an important topic to engine designers. Rim-seals reduce the pressurised purge required to protect highly-stressed components. This paper describes an experimental and computational study of flow through a turbine chute seal. The computations — which include a 360° domain — were undertaken using DLR TRACE’s time-marching solver. The experiments used a low Reynolds number turbine rig operating with an engine-representative flow structure. The simulations provide an excellent prediction of cavity pressure and swirl, and good overall agreement of sealing effectiveness when compared to experiment. Computation of flow within the chute seal showed strong shear gradients which influence the pressure distribution and secondary-flow field near the blade leading edge. High levels of shear across the rim-seal promote the formation of large-scale structures at the wheel-space periphery; the number and speed of which were measured experimentally and captured, qualitatively and quantitatively, by computations. A comparison of computational domains ranging from 30° to 360° indicate that steady features of the flow are largely unaffected by sector size. However, differences in large-scale flow structures were pronounced with a 60° sector and suggest that modelling an even number of blades in small sector simulations should be avoided.

Abstract:
