Abstract:
This dissertation investigates how W. A. Mozart applies the concept of key characteristics—the affective properties of each tonality—as discussed by three of his contemporaries, Johann Mattheson, C.F.D. Schubart and G.J. Vogler, to four soubrette and four prima donna characters from four of his late Italian operas: La Contessa and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro; Donna Anna and Zerlina in Don Giovanni; Fiordiligi and Despina in Così fan tutte; Vitellia and Servilia in La clemenza di Tito. The analytical method of this dissertation provides a hermeneutical tool to search for meanings in Mozart's music. The application compares the libretto text and its corresponding tonal center with the description of key characteristics on a micro level, to reveal significant dramatic and practical implications from Mozart's key usage in his operas.

The research aims to study the figure of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a paradigmatic vir Romanus of the early roman Republic, and his belonging clan, the gens Quinctia, throughout its existence. Aim of the work is to decode how it was built over time by the roman culture, the exemplary figure of Cincinnatus, highlighting any historical aspects of his story and the subsequent historiographical and "ideological" layers that have made it a paradigmatic character of the roman history.

Abstract:
This master thesis is about Niccolò Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy. Our main issue is to know why did Machiavelli interest in Livy's History of Rome, from which point of view did he read and comment on it, and the political lessons he taught Florence from it. In chapter one, we present our method inspired from the Cambridge contextualist school. Next, we put Machiavelli back in his time through a short biography; then we present Livy's History of Rome, and the author himself. In chapter two, we present the Discourses on Livy and the background in which Machiavellli wrote it. We demonstrate how this work follows on from the Renaissance litterature and at the same time breaks with it. Then we study the possible connections between the ancient Rome and the 16th century Florence. Afterwards, we comment some chapters of the Discourses, as an exemple. The last chapter deals with the philosophical issues in the Discourses: which view on History reveals through it, which part do play the concepts of virtù and fortuna and finally, the possibility of updating Machiavelli's approach, that is to say taking - or not - into account the historical exemples as a guide for today's political action.

Abstract:
In the last decades or so, Discourses on Livy has become the book where Machiavelli theorizes that political freedom is a result of social conflict. An increasing number of scholars have argued, and argue, that this issue has to be taken as one of Machiavelli’s major contributions to political thought. What our thesis tries to demonstrate is that this statement has no real textual basis. And the reason is – we argue - that when you have a very close and deep look on the Discourses, you have to recognize that it’s not clear at all what Machiavelli thinks about social conflict, as he comes out with so many contradictory statements on the subject that make it impossible to talk of any kind of a theory

Abstract:
106
In terms of the composer’s own sequence of creation, La clemenza di Tito (1791) is the last opera composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). In this work, the voice range of two male characters—Sesto and Annio—was written in the range for mezzo sopranos. When the opera premiered in 1791 in Prague, the character Sesto was played by a mezzo soprano castrato singer, and the character Annio was disguised by a female singer. Until today, these two characters are often played by mezzo sopranos. Starting with an introduction on the background of this repertoire and an analysis on arias written for these two characters, this thesis intends to compare the similarity and differences in these two roles, with an attempt to broaden a further understanding of how male characters are designed to be performed by female singers.
