Abstract:
This paper analizes three monthly total rainfalls and six monthly mean temperatures of the Santiago de Compostela (University), Lugo and La Coruña meteorological stations. The data were reconstructed using gour Quercus and Castanea sativa chornologies carried out in Lugo, Pontevedra and La Coruña provinces. Variable reconstructions and information about mean deviations are presented. Similar results are obtained when the reconstructions were compared each other and with climatic information. During the past two centuries, temperature and rainall variables are characterized by a gradual heating, with some cold periods, and progressive irregular rainfall. Both, temperature and rainfall, appear to be rising at the reconstructed stations for the two last decades.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the evaluation of the economic value that can be achieved by the use of decision threshold values for the Canadian Fire Weather Index for the projection of different specific wildfire events, as a basis for wildfire prevention activities. The study was done in two testing areas in Spain, corresponding to La Coruña and Alicante provinces. The applied methodology makes use of a simple binary decision model, which has been widely applied for the verification of quantitative meteorological forecasts. Meteorological and wildfire data from a 10-year period (1997–2006) were used. The results show that use of the Fire Weather Index results in potential economic savings, especially in the case of La Coruña. Therefore, the use of the Canadian Fire Weather Index as a basis to develop an early warning system for wildfire is recommended in the two provinces under study.

Abstract:
Surveys have been used to study the current perception towards wolves by different stakeholders such as ranchers, landowners, hunters, experts in the field, and employees of the environmental administration in the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña, in the northwest of Spain. The main objective of this study is the evaluation and further discussion of the compensation offered to affected people for damages caused by wolf attacks and whether such compensations represent an improvement in the degree of tolerance towards these animals. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found among the different sectors interviewed, with the hunters being the least tolerant sector, followed by ranchers. The number of attacks in the area was proven to influence their perspective toward wolves and the need for preventive measures. There was unanimity among hunters, ranchers, and locals, who do not consider the tools provided by the Galician administration sufficient to palliate the damages produced by wolves. However, 53.8% of ranchers, the group whose livelihood will most likely be affected by wolf attacks, and 60% of the wolf experts believe that compensation does not help to reduce tolerance towards wolves. Losing an animal makes people more likely to agree to the use of lethal and non-lethal methods.

Abstract:
The application of geostatistics to data obtained from geochemical prospecting process can provide useful information for evaluating mineralization potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of Au, As and Sb contents over a large area of the Coruña province, Spain. A geochemical survey was carried out from which a data set with 323 samples was collected. Macroelements and trace elements were determined by routine analytical techniques. The spatial variability was assessed using semivariogram and cross-semivariogram as well as indicator semivariogram analysis. Frequency distributions of the studied elements departed from normal, as indicated by skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Coefficients of variation ranked as follows: Sb < As < Au. Significant correlation coefficients between Au, Sb and As were found, even though the correlation values were low. Spherical models with nugget effects ranging from 50% (As) to 57.8% (Au) were fitted to the experimental semivariograms. Cross semivariograms of Au versus Sb and As showed smaller nugget variance than individual semivariograms. Indicator semivariograms were calculated taken mean, median, and different percentiles as threshold values. Ordinary kriging, cokriging, and indicator kriging were performed to generate geochemical maps. The method has succeeded in effectively extracting useful information, and improving the analysis of the metallogenic and ore-controlling factors, thereby playing an important role in qualitative and quantitative predictions.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to determine the perception of schoolchildren whether their academic performance improved or worsened during the pandemic, analyzing their social anxiety, gender, use of masks in the classroom, and school year. The total sample was 107 primary school students (25 in the fourth, 40 in the fifth and 42 in the sixth grade), with a mean age of 10.51 years old (SD = 1). The gender were 58 girls and 49 boys, from a school in the province of La Coruña (Spain). The study was based on a quantitative methodology, and the design was cross-sectional, descriptive, observational and correlational. The social anxiety questionnaire (CASO-N24) was used to assess social anxiety, and an ad hoc self-report register was elaborated to evaluate sociodemographic variables. The results indicated that 44.8% of the schoolchildren considered that the pandemic had neither improved nor worsened their academic performance. Although 38.3% considered that high and very high social anxiety increased progressively as the school year progressed, both in boys and girls. Besides, the schoolchildren who presented very low and low social anxiety improved their grades in Physical Education, while those who presented high social anxiety worsened them. In conclusion, having a low social anxiety, lower grades before the pandemic and higher grades after, makes children perceive an improvement in their academic performance during the pandemic.

This research aims to define the most popular sports in a sample of schoolchildren, and to relate sports practice levels with the level of effort implicated, the kind of leisure-time activities, and the notion about Physical Education (PE). A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 818 students of third cycle of Primary Education from the province of A Coruña (Spain). Gender representation was 52% for boys and 48% for girls, with age range between 10 and 13 years old (M = 11,17; SD = 0,44). The instrument employed was an Ad-Hoc questionnaire for recording sociodemographic factors and sports-related variables. Results show that one out of ten schoolchildren does not practice any sport, whilst collective sports with contact, mainly played in a federated way, are the most practiced. Football and water sports were the most popular, whereas track and field and cycling were the least practiced. Furthermore, the time spent on sports practice was positively related with leisure-time sports and perceived aptitude towards PE, and negatively correlated with digital leisure time. The level of effort involved in sports was negatively correlated with sport leisure time, notion of PE, and perceived aptitude towards PE. Finally, sports leisure time was found to have a negative relation with academic and digital leisure times, as well as a positive relation with the notion of PE and perceived aptitude towards PE.

Abstract:
One of the most relevant characteristics of the Information and Knowledge Society is the fact that learning no longer takes place merely in regulated training institutions, but also in non-formal and informal spaces. Digital technologies give us the possibility to learn at any time and in any place. This breaks space-time barriers generating learning experiences which nowadays are unlimited. Thus, the present work aims to analyse how the different learning and training opportunities contribute to the professional development of teachers. This qualitative piece of research adopted a case study design. The participants were four Early Childhood Education teachers from the province of A Coruña (Spain). Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The information was processed through content analysis strategies. The results show that teachers carry out multiple training activities to keep up-to-date including courses offered by the educational administration, through the Training and Resource Centres, and meetings with other professionals. Learning Ecologies are presented as a useful framework from which it is possible to integrate and optimize various learning experiences, understanding holistically the manyfold elements that determine the professional development of the four teachers in the case study and the potential of their synergies.

Abstract:
AbstractHigh-resolution electron microscopy and microanalytical studies were performed on clay and bulk soil samples developed on various igneous and metamorphic rocks from Galicia in the Coruna province in NW Spain. Two mineralogical microsystems can be distinguished showing different stages of weathering. For feldspars, exsolution and mass transformation lead to the delineation of parallel domains, and to formation of gel or paracrystalline minerals. For micas, alteration starts with a physical breakdown, i.e. exfoliation and crystal microdivision; individualization of monolayers is followed by gel formation. A solid phase diffusion phenomenon can explain the formation of 1 : 1 phyllosilicates inside 2 : 1 phyllosilicates or within the continuum of the original crystals. Evidence of such weathering stages in crystalline rocks can be related to the occurrence of specific climatic conditions between temperate and tropical areas.

Garcia, Perez Jose Domingo. "Socioeconomic processes of land degradation in Guadalajara province (Spain)." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/385.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the great growth and interest in the study of socioeconomic processes of land degradation in many parts of the world, relatively little attention has been paid to these in Spain. Foresters play an important part in the national strategy to solve the problems of land degradation. It might be expected that after the changes which restored political democracy in Spain in the late 1970s, a reorganization of the way the planning and implementation of soil and water conservation projects through reforestation would be effected. The reforestation agencies of the Government could have improved the effectiveness of conservation by acknowledging and dealing with the need to study the socioeconomic processes of land degradation and involve affected people in the decision making process in planning. This is the main problematic which the thesis addresses. The thesis considers the way issues of land degradation are studied, and how the results of these studies have been adopted and put into practice by Spanish foresters. The workings of the Spanish State and powerful economic interests are considered to be major players determining forestry practice and the outcome of conservation. Some of the most relevant methods in current planning for soil and water conservation, namely those stemming from practice and research into the promotion of participation of affected people, are largely absent from Spanish academic studies and/or planning circles for reforestation projects. The thesis considers the advantages and disadvantages of participatory and multidisciplinary approaches to research with the aim of providing an improved understanding of land degradation processes. The participatory approach is also appraised for its practical value to those involved in planning reforestation projects. The thesis concludes that the dilemma faced by successive Spanish Governments regarding reforestation is one of decision making in planning, involving not only powerful interests, but also those of the people affected. The mismatch between what in Governmental circles is acknowledged as necessary (the participation of the people affected in the decision making process for conservation) and its practice, is the result of the inadequate professional composition of planning teams. The introduction of social science specialists to all the stages of the planning cycle is necessary to improve understanding of the socioeconomic processes of land degradation. For such improvement to occur the perceptions of land users must be included. In so doing it will increase the possibilities of more successful soil and water conservation projects.

Abstract:
This thesis, based on extensive fieldwork (from 1978 to 1985) at La Nava de San Miguel, a village in the province of Avila in central Spain, attempts to demonstrate six main points: 1. That the continued vitality of the village as a community is based on the economic factors of possession of large summer and autumn pastures near the village, transhumance to winter pastures over the mountains in Extremadura, the cattle market at nearby El Barco de Avila, and virtual self-subsistance, all of which enable the villagers to maintain themselves as cattle raisers; and to the strength of: a) the village ideal of co-operation embodied in the use of the common known as the 'Sierra de Socios', the transhumant groups and the systems organized by the 'torno'; and b) the village ideal of mutual assistance shown at hay-making, pig-killing, and other aspects of daily life in the village. 2. That all co-operative institutions inside the village are organized by the principle of the 'torno', by which rights and obligations to these co-operative institutions rotate cyclically ('like a wheel which turns endlessly') and the village itself is conceived of by its inhabitants as essentially having no beginning and no end. 3. That the co-operative institution outside the village (the transhumant group which goes to the winter pastures in Extremadura) is not organized by the 'torno', since the villagers are members of the transhumant groups as individuals, free to change from one group to another, and decisions made by these groups are not controlled by the village as a community. 4. That the villagers conceptually divide the village and the surrounding territory into the 'realm of the men' (apart from the bar, outside the village) and the 'realm of the women' (inside the village). 5. That the people of La Nava conceptualize the world as consisting essentially of two parts: the complementary halves of themselves (their village and their region) and the land across the mountains to the south of them, Extremadura. The villagers radically contrast their village - regarded as cold, dark, and lacking in fertility - with the warmth, sun, and fertility of Extremadura. 6. That unlike affairs in the village organized to ensure continuity and equity by the principle of the 'torno' and following a movement of rotation, all relations with Extremadura are considered to move up and down in a lineal direction to ensure fertility and life when these are lacking in the village. The thesis consists of four chapters: Chapter I looks at the physical situation, climatic conditions, historical background, and other introductory information; Chapter II examines the socioeconomic institutions of the village - the 'Sierra de Socios', the systems of 'tornos' for herding the goats, irrigating the fields, etc.; Chapter III deals with the annual cycle of transhumance to and from Extremadura; and Chapter IV examines the 'world-view' of the villagers of La Nava - especially the symbolic aspects of this - and, in particular, the perception they have of their own identity in relation to Extremadura.

Over the last several decades, local transport authorities in Europe and around the world have introduced competitive bidding in concessions for providing bus service, often resulting in reduced costs for service. The main caveat to this approach is that without proper oversight by the authority, operators may reduce quality to cut costs and maximize profits. To counter this, performance regimes are developed and incentives are typically offered to achieve the policy goals of the authority. Through an analysis of current theory and practice, this thesis is intended to serve as an introduction to the end-to-end process of transport contracts- drawing from the fields of contract economics, organizational structure, service quality, and performance measurement as they relate to public transport service. Expanding on current practice, suggestions are offered for future interurban bus operations contracts in the Province of Gipuzkoa, Spain. First, several recommendations regarding contract structure and bidding procedures are discussed, proposed, and demonstrated. Then, under the framework of the European standard on quality management in public transport, a selection of performance measures are proposed. These measures were especially selected and designed for the technological capacities and operational conditions of Gipuzkoa. Several of these measures (ridership, on-time performance, and completed service) are then suggested for incentives within future contracts. Representative incentive levels and methods for calculating and paying each are proposed for an upcoming contract currently under consideration in Gipuzkoa.

Goldsmith, Kevin. "Artificial intelligence techniques for soil erosion mapping and risk assessment in Almeria Province, Southeast Spain." Thesis, Kingston University, 2005. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/20367/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an alternative method to for mapping soil erosion. The method is conducted in a small study area of 40 km2 in the Sorbas Basin, Almería province, Southeast Spain. Soil erosion is one of the most destructive land degradation processes and can often lead to serious environmental problems. It is important to implement appropriate management strategies to meet these challenges at a range of scales. However, prior knowledge of erosion processes and the extent to which they operate spatially is often limited and, traditional methods of soil erosion mapping are often time and labour intensive. This thesis explores the use of two Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for soil erosion mapping; Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Decision Tree Classifiers (DTCs). The opportunities for employing such methods relate in part to their non-linear capabilities, their ability to learn in an inductive manner and incorporate multi¬source data sets. AI training and test data were collected from 520 individually sampled locations within the study area. At each site the dependent variable erosion was estimated, as were a range of independent variables through field study. Two Digital Elevation Models were developed. Laboratory analysis was also undertaken to explore the physico-chemical processes relating to soil dispersion and to determine the applicability of a soil sodicity meter developed by the Co-operative Research Centre for Soil and Land Management in Adelaide, Australia. Results demonstrate that classification accuracy.and overall performance is strongly dependent on the independent and dependent variables used, with the more expensive field collected data providing improved variables to those extracted from the Digital Elevation Models. Discriminant Analysis (DA) classifications were also employed to provide a linear comparison to the AI techniques, and performed comparably well. In the Artificial Neural Network classifications the composition of the training set was seen to exert significant bias, leading to poor performance and often misleading results. Laboratory analysis highlights the complex physico-chemical relationships associated with soil dispersion. The findings also indicate that no discernible relationship exists between the sodicity meter and standard laboratory procedures employed to measure the sodic properties of a soil. The thesis demonstrates the potential for employing these methods for erosion risk analysis and the ability of inductive approaches to formulate rules that may enhance current levels of understanding associated with soil erosion processes. Mapped outputs produced by these methods may prove valuable in the management of landscapes susceptible to soil erosion.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter analyses industrial tourism in the province of Seville, Spain. The chapter aims to advance deeper into the conceptual knowledge regarding what industrial tourism actually is and what is understood by this type of cultural tourism. It also analyses the perception that operational companies in the province of Seville that carry out this activity hold of the benefits and costs that this entails. Finally, the chapter examines, through a case study, the benefits that visits to historical heritage can bring for the economic and social environment of the destination in which this takes place.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the past 50 years, a large variety of statistically based models and methods for landslide susceptibility zonation have been proposed in the literature. The numerous methods, applicable to a large range of spatial scales, use several input thematic data, different model combinations and various approaches to evaluate the model performance. In the literature, only few articles describe tools that apply statistically based approaches for the susceptibility evaluation. This paper describes and illustrates, through an example in the Gipuzkoa province (Spain), the use of LAND-SUITE, a tool for the statistically based landslide susceptibility zonation. The application aims to show how LAND-SUITE provides utilities to: (i) support the user for the input data preparation; (ii) perform preliminary and exploratory analysis of the available data; (iii) test different combinations of variables and select the optimal thematic/explanatory set; (iv) test different model types and their combinations; and (v) evaluate the model performance and uncertainty. The suite showed high flexibility and allowed to perform different susceptibility applications, with diversified training/validation datasets partitions and validation tests. Given its specifications, LAND-SUITE can be easily applied elsewhere to perform similar studies but also to explore other landslide susceptibility applications.

Abstract:
The development of loading and unloading operations is an essential part of the logistical chain of maritime transportation. One of the determining factors in this process is the movement of moored ships, which has a notable influence over the efficiency of the operation. The implementation of systems to characterize their real behavior would provide an important tool for the management of these activities. In this context the Water and Environmental Engineering Group (GEAMA) at the University of A Coruña, Spain (UDC), through different projects executed in collaboration with the Port Authority of A Coruña (Spain), has developed an integrated system for monitoring the dynamic behavior of moored vessels. This system includes different devices which allow to characterize their six degrees of freedom and tensions in certain mooring lines. The analysis of motions is carried out using three combined technologies. Ship rotations (roll, pitch and yaw) are registered by means of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) developed by the Research Group. The translations of heave and surge are analyzed with a visual tracking system using fixed cameras deployed near the location. Finally, the evaluation of sway motion and an additional measure of yaw are obtained using two laser-distance meters located over the dock. All devices integrated in the system were calibrated in laboratory at the R+D Centre CITTEC-UDC with several series of tests. Once the methodology was validated, the system has been employed in different projects carried out in Inner and Outer Ports of the city of A Coruña, with more than 30 monitored ships.

Abstract:
<p>Designed with smooth and slender forms, Marineda footbridge in A Coruña (Spain) is a composite structure for pedestrians and cyclists that solves the access to one of the largest shopping centers in Spain, flying above a high-traffic highway.</p><p>The maximum deck height and the geometry in plan were established by the necessary vertical clearance over the highway and the situation of the starting and end points. In this way, and with the idea of avoiding structural elements over the deck to minimize visual impact, a three-span curved slender beam was designed. The main span is 85.8 meters long and comprises a composite airtight box-girder deck with variable depth from 1.75 meters near piers to 1.00 meter in midspan section. The two lateral spans, one on each side, are formed by a post-tensioned voided slab rigidly connected to pier and abutment, and with a strut element underground forming a rigid frame. In these spans the maximum deck height is 1.90 meters and the minimum is 1.00 meter. The deck width is 4.00 meters to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians and has a transverse slope of 1.5% from the centerline to each side.</p><p>The curved geometry in plan, with a radius of 55 meters, and the stiffness of the lateral spans allow for an integral structure design without joints, that, along with the slenderness of the main span, give an unique appearance to the footbridge.</p>

Abstract:
TThe aim of this paper is to offer an overview of how an EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) programme was designed at the University of A Coruña (Spain) to implement courses taught in English by its teaching staff. The final goals of this initiative were twofold: to attract an increasing number of foreign students through mobility or as new admissions; and to promote internationalisation at home for both students and lecturers. Some of the steps taken in this process (from coaching to EMI) are explained as well as the principles on which a particular teaching methodology for non-native speakers of English is based. Content knowledge and a B2 level of English is presupposed, but a further level of teacher professionalism is aspired to, involving commitment, reflection, responsibility. A shift in focus, from teacher- to student-centred learning is required. Instructors should show their students how to learn and guide them along their learning paths. This implies a shift in the original mindset that is strongly rooted in particular teaching traditions. Communicative competence is also a key factor: knowing how to transmit and communicate is at least as important as the material content itself, and lecturers should be good communicators.

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of downward wage rigidity on wage and employment dynamics after the outbreak of major recessions in Spain. Downward wage rigidity stems from collective agreements, which set province-sector-skill-specific minimum wage floors for all workers. By exploiting variation in the renewal of collective agreements, we find that those signed before the onset of recessions settle on higher nominal negotiated wage growth than agreements signed afterwards. Leveraging social security data and the distribution of the worker-level bite of minimum wage floors, we document that the negotiated wage rigidity translated into higher wage growth mainly among workers with near-floor wages. Consequently, these workers experienced a substantial and highly persistent increase in the probability of non-employment, but only if they were covered by long-duration collective agreements. Our findings highlight the interplay between rigidity at different parts of the wage distribution and labor market institutions and identify conditions under which collective contract staggering and the inability to renegotiate may amplify aggregate shocks.
