Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper addresses the issue of contact centres, which have evolved to address the needs of children and parents affected by separation and divorce. The author notes the emergence of contact services in Australia and the establishment of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Children’s Contact Services (ANZACCS). The bulk of the paper outlines the development of children contact centres in France, summarises findings from the evaluation of 10 centres, and describes examples of three different French contact centre models. Brief summaries are also included of the situation in the UK and the USA. Some suggestions for Australian services are made, including the need for multi-disciplinary working parties in each State and Territory to advise programs.

Abstract:
To complicate the well-researched story of the activities of colonial emigréés in France, this article focuses on the role of less visible groups. Despite rhetoric about intellectuals fusing with the people, there was no enduring Vietnamese student-worker alliance in interwar France. Workers formed their own organizations, notably the Association des Cuisiniers Indochinois and the Association Amicale des Indochinois (Travailleurs Manuels). Careful study of the expressed desires, daily practices, and networks of these working-class expatriates demonstrates that language and routines played as large a role as regional origin in dividing the Vietnamese community in interwar France.

Abstract:
The article describes the circumstances in which the France-Pologne association, led by Henri de Montfort, was established in 1919 and operated to 1940. In the available literature on the subject, the activity of this association has not been given much attention. The Les Amis de la Pologne association established by Rosa Bailly in 1919 played an important role in creating a positive image of Poland in the city on the Seine in the interwar period. The recognition of the Polish National Committee (KNP) by Paris in August 1917 as the official Polish representation paved the way for the creation of the France-Pologne association. Having realised how important it was to use propaganda in international political and military relations, the Polish delegation to the Paris Peace Conference handed over the competences of the KNP Propaganda Office to the France-Pologne association. Its most important task was to conduct the promotional activities in the central press, supported by the government on the Seine. Throughout the interwar period, to advertise the Second Polish Republic’s achievements in France, France-Pologne co-organised readings, lectures, concerts, anniversary celebrations and participated in the scholarship exchange of Polish and French high schoolers and students. It also informed the French public opinion about economic relations with Poland in its magazines: „La Pologne. Politique, économique, littérraire et artistique”, „Bulletin d’information sur la vie économique polonaise” and „La Revue de l’Est Européen”.

Abstract:
People now spend less time doing housework in general, and cooking in particular. So is cooking still a central feature of our daily eating practices? This article compares trends in household cooking durations in France and the USA in the period 1985–2010 using time-use surveys and practice theory. We ask how the association between cooking and eating at home has changed over time, and how it has contributed to the decline in the time spent on household cooking. Descriptive statistics show that US households spent 20 minutes less time per day cooking in 2010 than in 1985 (15 minutes less time per day in France). Linear regressions indicate that the association between cooking duration and the number of eating events at home has declined in the USA but not in France. The Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method points to this fact as the primary reason for the change in cooking time in the USA; in France, decreased cooking time is accounted for primarily by changes in population characteristics. French and American food practices have followed gradually diverging trajectories, with cooking less a feature of eating practices – even at home – in the USA, whereas the association between eating and preparing food at home remains stable in France.

Abstract:
SummaryThrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), a recently described inhibitor of fibrinolysis, has been hypothesized as playing a role in atherothrombosis. However, the evidence from retrospective studies, which have evaluated the role of TAFI in vascular risk, is conflicting. In a prospective cohort (the PRIME Study) of nearly 10 000 apparently healthy men recruited in France (Lille, Strasbourg, Toulouse) and Northern Ireland (Belfast), we measured baseline plasma concentration of TAFI antigen among 143 participants (81 from France and 62 from Ireland) who subsequently developed angina pectoris and among 286 age-matched participants who remained free of disease during the 5 years of follow-up. Genotyping of the Ala147Thr polymorphism located in the TAFI gene was performed using an allele specific PCR. In France, mean levels of TAFI were significantly higher at baseline among men who subsequently developed angina pectoris compared with their control subjects (119 versus 107 %; p = 0.02). The risk of future angina pectoris increased with increasing tertiles of TAFI (p = 0.02), such that men in the highest tertile at study entry had a 5-fold higher relative risk than those in the lowest tertile (95% confidence interval, 1.38 to 18.58) after controlling for the conventional cardiovascular risk factors. No such difference was observed in Northern Ireland. In France, Thr/Thr carriers of the Ala147Thr polymorphism were significantly more frequent in cases than in controls (p = 0.01) leading to a relative risk of angina pectoris of 2.7 (95%CI 1.2-5.8).Increase in plasma TAFI antigen levels is a risk factor for angina pectoris in France. Genotyping for the Ala147Thr polymorphism seems to be a reliable tool to assess the risk mediated by TAFI.

Abstract:
The World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) could be considered as a newcomer among scientific societies in the mental health field, because it was established in 1986 in France, when about 100 professionals from 35 countries met at its founding congress. That congress was preceded by an extensive international planning process, which began with the First World Congress on Rehabilitation for the Mentally Ill in Helsinki, in 1970. Subsequent meetings of key professionals and agency representatives from various countries, mainly supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Office, resulted in the formation, in 1980, of a promoting group which planned, through its international secretariat, the foundation of the WAPR. Therefore, close links with the mental health programme of the WHO have been maintained by the WAPR since its beginnings.

Abstract:
We study the firm-level implications of robot adoption in France. Of 55,390 firms in our sample, 598 adopted robots between 2010 and 2015, but these firms accounted for 20 percent of manufacturing employment. Adopters experienced significant declines in labor shares, the share of production workers in employment, and increases in value added and productivity. They expand their overall employment as well. However, this expansion comes at the expense of competitors, leading to an overall negative association between adoption and employment. Robot adoption has a large impact on the labor share because adopters are larger and grow faster than their competitors.

Abstract:
The French Registry for Plasma Exchange (PE) was set up in 1985. For 11 years it has allowed the analysis of the techniques used, along with the indications and complications. After a decrease in the number of participating centers, due to the heaviness of the data collection mode, the telematic network, created in 1991, led to a new increase in participants from 26 in 1990 to 68 in 1996. Follow up shows a slight fall in activity since some protocols have ended, while neurological pathologies remain the most frequent indications. The important modifications observed over the years are the increase of the centrifugation technique, the development of plasma treatment and plasma substitution by an association of albumin-pentastarch. The French Registry for plasma exchange is the largest data base dealing with therapeutical hemapheresis. The French-German registry set-up through internet is a first step towards a European data base.
