Abstract:
In the second half of the twentieth century in Spain, because of the political ups and downs, an effective censorship of the periodicals was developed by the State. The objective of this article is to know one of the least known cases of condemnation of a spanish newspaper, La Paz de Murcia, which had a major distribution in the capital in 1874, when the events occurred. The study of the suspension of La Paz de Murcia reveals how, under some circumstances, a newspaper's response could force the State to rethink and cancel its sanctions and the attempt to control journalists.

Abstract:
Abstract In 1957, writing in Spanish, the Mexican poet Octavio Paz (1914–1998) published the first complete translation into a Western language of the famous travel diary Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North, 1702) by Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694). A thoroughly revised second edition followed in 1970, which included freer translations of Bashō’s haikus. In this definite edition, Paz attempted to synthesize the poetic effect of Bashō’s work for a Latin American readership. By using a textual and archival-based approach, this article analyses Paz’s two Spanish versions against the Japanese original text and its intertextualizations of classical Chinese poetry and contextualizes the background behind the publication of these epoch-making translations. It highlights the textual refractions and translation issues that occur when East Asian literature circulates in the Global South and the transpacific literary networks that made these literary exchanges possible.

The place of Mexico in the world according to Octavio Paz. An understanding of the viceregal stageOctavio Paz’s position in the history of Mexico and the formation of its identity has shaped, to a large extent, public opinion, yet there are aspects that are rather unknown. His reflection on the Christian contribution of the Spanish presence is often overlooked, as well as the very nature of the viceroyalty and the integration of the various components of that society. The paper consists basically of bringing together the thoughts of Paz, scattered in writings of very different times, that show these neglected positions.

Abstract:
This article provides a sociohistorical and linguistic account for the development of Afro-Bolivian Spanish (ABS), an Afro-Hispanic vernacular spoken in Los Yungas, Department of La Paz, Bolivia. Previous research has indicated that ABS might be the descendent of an Afro-Hispanic pidgin (Lipski 2008), which first creolized in colonial times and eventually decreolized due to contact with Spanish after the Bolivian Land Reform of 1952. The present study argues that ABS was probably never a creole, but rather a language relatively close to Spanish from its inception. The basis on which this claim is built consists of sociodemographic and linguistic data. The findings strongly indicate that the historical conditions for a creole language to emerge were not in place in Bolivia for the period under analysis (15th–19th century).

Abstract. In this paper we present the initial results of PAZ Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery for the first time. In the study, the potential of repeat-pass high resolution PAZ images were investigated. To this aim, both linear backscatter and interferometric results were presented. We used multi-temporal X-band (3.1 cm wavelength) new generation single look complex (SLC) data from Spanish PAZ in single polarization data. PAZ is based on TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X platform to establish a constellation with them to shorten the revisit time and increase data acquisition capacity. We applied two analysis on PAZ data to assess the performance of the satellite images. For the analysis a semi-arid and almost flat region of Central Anatolia was selected. The images are acquired in both ascending and descending orbits. Each pair has 33 days of temporal baselines. Firstly, backscatter analysis was conducted over the region for different land cover classes. Secondly interferometric analysis was applied to determine phase difference and coherence features. As the region has sand dunes, bareland and uncultivated agricultural fields the coherence analysis showed high values, while cultivated fields showed variations of coherence due to different growth of vegetation. Since the region is prone to sinkhole formation the high-resolution PAZ indicated its advantage as determining a sinkhole that has a circle shape. The displacement of ground surface is determined in line of sight direction.

LABURPENA: Espainiako bake-justizia krisian dago. Bake Epaitegien eredu portugaldarra oso alternatiba egokia izan daiteke gure ikuspegitik. ABSTRACT: Spanish Peace Courts are in crisis. The Portuguese model of Peace courts might be an acceptable alternative from our perspective. The differences between both models are remarkable: the Portuguese judge is a professional who holds a degree in Law; with a flexible determination of its territorial jurisdiction; the procedure before the Peace Court is informal and flexible and it aims to favour the agreement between the parties; therefore, the Peace Courts have the leading role of introducing alternative methods like mediation and conciliation. In every peace court there is an intraprocedural mediation service with the purpose of favouring the agreement between the parties.

Abstract:
In this paper, 2 2 The research presented in this paper was carried out in the framework of the competitive national project ‘Las categorías de verbo y adverbio en el DAELE’ (reference HUM2006–06982), awarded by the Spanish Dirección General de Enseñanza Superior e Investigación Científica, and directed by Dr Paz Battaner Arias at the Pompeu Fabra University. I describe the grammatical patterns of a set of Spanish verbs that are frequently used in specialised discourse to provide structure, organise information in the text and function as connectors. The verbs selected for the study are the following unaccusative verbs of existence and appearance: ocurrir (‘occur’), suceder (‘happen/take place’), existir (‘exist’), aparecer (‘appear’) and resultar (‘turn out’). The grammatical and lexico-graphical description of these verbs is compared with the results provided by consulting the Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA) database of the Real Academia Española in three thematic fields: Science and Technology, Economics and Finance, and Law. The results of the research highlight three specific patterns of use for the unaccusative verbs of existence and appearance studied in specialised texts, placing particular emphasis on the constructions that contribute to the texture of discourse. I propose that these patterns should be incorporated into dictionaries of use (‘codifiers’) as lexicographical data that may enrich the information given about these words, whose meanings are clearly diffuse.

Abstract:
A phenomenon that is encountered fairly frequently in Spanish but has received relatively little attention on the part of linguists is the use of the singular indirect object pronoun le when the plural les would be expected, as illustrated in the following examples:Hay que darle un justo precio a las personas. (MEX-13:168)To my knowledge, only Kany (1951:107–109) has attempted to deal with this topic in a comprehensive, global manner, and his presentation is limited to one brief paragraph of commentary illustrated by examples taken primarily from works written in the 1920s and 1930s. The present paper will present a general study of this construction focusing primarily on a description of its contemporary usage as reflected in the spoken Spanish of educated speakers from eleven cities, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Havana, La Paz, Lima, Madrid, Mexico City, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Santiago (Chile) and Seville.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of Saharawi women as educators and promoters of peace. The study includes published research on the topic, as well as two interviews conducted with a Paz Martín Lozano, a Spanish politician who is an expert on Saharawi issues, and Jadiyetu El Mohtar, a Saharawi activist and representative of the National Union of Saharawi Women (UNMS) who was well known by the Spanish media due to the hunger strike that she went on at the Lanzarote Airport in 2009. Despite the unbearable extreme conditions, Saharawi people were able to organize their political, economic and social life in refugee camps in the middle of a desert, mainly thanks to the incredible Saharawi women who educate their children to fight for the liberation of the territory of Western Sahara in a peaceful and non-violent way. They are striving for the recognition of the Saharawi cause at the international level and raising awareness of their right to self-determination through a free and fair referendum. They provide an excellent example for their children and transmit the values of peace, non-violent resistance, and not despairing in the face of difficult circumstances.

Abstract:
The present paper compares and contrasts patterns of variation exhibited by the conjunction que in Spanish, Catalan and Italian, in root sentences — such as Que te digo que me dejes en paz (‘I’m telling you to leave me in peace’) or: Que los libros que los necesito (‘As far as the books are concerned, I need them’) — and when it appears in combination with evidential and polarity adverbs — such as Naturalmente que iré contigo (‘Of course, I will go with you’) or: Sí que iré contigo (‘Yes, I will go with you’). The focus will mainly be on the independent realizations of conjunctions in Spanish, but data from Catalan and Italian will also be analyzed, in order to show that the ways of encoding the speaker’s point of view and source of information vary across different languages. My hypothesis is that the existence of structures which combine this conjunction with evidential and polarity adverbs derives from the discourse properties of these syntactic categories. The conjunction itself can be used not only to mark subordination but also as a discourse marker, enabling the speaker to recall previously shared information or knowledge.

Abstract:
Introduction. Acinetobacter baumannii is a pathogen that is causing concern due to its high genetic elasticity, allowing it to show high rates of antibiotic resistance and to express a wide range of virulence determinants. Several studies are aimed towards targeting the virulence of A. baumannii as an adjunct to antibiotic therapy. In this study, we investigate the difference in virulence determinants between A. baumannii isolates obtained from Spain and Lebanon Methodology. Fifty-nine A. baumannii isolates were collected from La Paz Hospital, Spain, and 90 from St. George Hospital, Lebanon. The isolates were identified using VITEK-2. Biofilm formation was detected by crystal violet staining, hemolysis by blood agars, motility by surface motility assays, siderophore production by CAS assays, and proteolytic activity by azoalbumin assays. Results. The expression of virulence determinants was highly variable among the isolates. Among the Spanish isolates, 84.4% produced biofilms, 54.2% showed hemolysis, and 69.5% produced siderophores. Among the Lebanese isolates, 85.6% produced strong biofilms, 47.8% showed hemolysis, and 57.8% produced siderophores. Proteolytic activity for the Spanish isolates (26.6 ± 8.4 U/L) was slightly higher than that of the Lebanese isolates (17.7 ± 9.5 U/L). Very few Spanish isolates (3) showed surface motility, as opposed to the majority of the Lebanese isolates (80) that showed surface motility. Conclusion. The genomic plasticity of A. baumannii is demonstrated by its ability to differentially express virulence determinants. This highlights the need to treat each isolate as a unique case when attempting to use anti-virulence agents to treat A. baumannii infections.

Abstract:
Abstract: Researchers working on the influence of Antonio Machado on the Spanish mid-1950s generation of poets have highlighted social critique and metaphysical reflexivity as common features in both. Prompted by Jaime Gil de Biedma’s reading of one of Machado’s earlier poems from the series ‘Galerías’, this essay explores the erotic component in the poem, an element under-researched in Machado’s poetry despite its relevance to the writings of his apocryphals. Drawing on theories of eroticism proposed, among others, by Georges Bataille, Octavio Paz, Roland Barthes and Anne Carson, an analysis of the textual strategies that generate the erotic potential in Machado’s poem reveals a network of echoes and poetic resonances which conjure up the figure of a mediator of desire. Gil de Biedma’s reading suggests a sensibility receptive to this strand of Machado’s legacy. Key words: Eroticism; Antonio Machado; Charles Baudelaire; Jaime Gil de Biedma; poets of 1950; poetic tradition; Michel Foucault; Georges Bataille; Anne Carson; Octavio Paz; erotic triangle; mediator of desire; poetic echo.

The aim in this article is to expose that tone – in its acoustic, prosodic and, most of all tensive dimensions– is the creator of pathic-like sense effects. In other words, it is an affirmation regarding tone is a producer of affections in poetic discourse. The first part of this paper is dedicated to a general reflection on poetry as a genre oriented to arouse sensitive experience through the configuration of a particular tone. In the second part, the concept of tone is defined. Finally, three different Spanish-speaking poetic texts are analyzed –among them authors such as Octavio Paz and María Teresa Andruetto– in order to recognize what kind of discursive means are imbricated to modulate tone; it is paid special attention to the role of metrics and rhythm. The point of view adopted comes back to lucid reflections of poets such as Paul Valéry and Edgar Allan Poe, as well as insight on tense stylistics by Claude Zilberberg, without forgetting some approaches from Spanish stylistics as established by Dámaso Alonso and Tomás Navarro.

Abstract:
This article contributes to the assessment of the management of migrants at the end of the 16th century as part of the challenge, by both central and municipal authorities, for ending the civil war in the Spanish Low Countries. In particular, it questions to what extent experiences of exiles, returnees and migrants presented a challenge for families, economic regulation and public order in the French-speaking reconciled provinces (Hainaut, Artois and the Walloon Flanders), in the new framework of the pacification and religious normalization. It focuses on how did the towns, when confronted with various forms of mobility, attempt to apply the practice of reconciliation. On the one hand, the general policy of reconciliation tried to build a post bellum society under the Roman Catholic faith and the King’s sovereignty, not only by excluding those who refused to recant in order to conform to the rules of the pacification, but also by forgiving and reincorporating the migrants who crossed confessional boundaries. Then, it considers how, at their level, the municipal authorities had to take various patterns of migration into account, in particular those that connected most of the towns of the Union of Arras to the Protestant Refuge in England and the Dutch Republic, reducing the importance of the migrants’ religious status in their selection criteria. Finally, theses practices opened a space for discussion and a shy civic toleration between the Catholic aldermen, the ex-Calvinists who had chosen official reconciliation, and the textile workers migrants while still being accommodated and welcomed into the exile Protestant Churches, relegating the debate about personal confessional practices and religion from public space to the family sphere.

Abstract:
BackgroundCOVID-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was declared pandemic in March 2020. We know that patients with cancer represent a high risk population. Lung cancer have an already damage lung that may affect the evolution and outcomes of these patients.1–3 The aim of this study is to report the characteristics and outcomes of patients with lung cancer receiving immunotherapy and SARS-CoV-2 infection.MethodsWe retrospectively collected sociodemographic and clinical data from patients with lung cancer and COVID-19 diagnosis who were admitted to La Paz University Hospital (Madrid, Spain) from March 1 to May 7, 2020. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. Hazard ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were estimated with the use of Cox proportional-hazards regression models.ResultsA total of 29 patients were included. Baseline characteristics are depicted in table 1. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was reported in 93% of the patients and 69% were at advanced stage at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis. Eighty-two percent of the patients were admitted to the hospital and 75% received experimental therapy for COVID-19, including hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) (N=9), HCQ plus azithromycin (N=11) or lopinavir/ritonavir (N=2). A total of 12 patients developed acute distress respiratory syndrome (ADRS) at a median time of 7 days from COVID-19 diagnosis. ADRS was managed with steroids in 75% of the patients. Thirteen (44.8%) deaths were reported, 11 of them were considered to be COVID-19 related. Death occurred at a median time of 8 days. In the univariate analysis, diabetes mellitus, respiratory failure at the time of admission, presence of multilobar infiltrates and SDRA were associated with death.Twenty-two patients were on systemic treatment, of whom 10 patients were receiving immunotherapy alone (N=7) or in combination with chemotherapy (N=3) at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis. No significant association with the development of ADRS (P=0.38) or death (P=0.41) was found between patients on immunotherapy versus other systemic therapies. Overall survival was not reached in the immunotherapy group vs 14 days in patients on other systemic therapies (P=0.25), see figure 1.Abstract 482 Table 1Clinical characteristicsECOG PS, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status; NSCLC, Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer; SCLC, Small-Cell Lung Cancer; CT, chemotherapy; ICI, immune checkpoint inhibitors; TKI, tyrosine-kinase inhibitorsAbstract 482 Figure 1Overall survival. Overall survival in patients with lung cancer treated with immunotherapy vs other therapiesConclusionsWe found that patients with lung cancer represent an extremely vulnerable population, with a poor prognosis after COVID-19 diagnosis. Treatment with immunotherapy may also be considered a risk factor. Emphasis on prevention and treatment based on evidence-based medicine is crucial in our daily practice.AcknowledgementsThis work has not been supported by public grants or financial support. Abstract:
But there is a period less known in Besteiro’s life: the years running from the closure of Democracia (the main publication of his wing of Spanish socialism) at the end of 1935, to his involvement in the coup d’etat that would overthrow Negrin’s government in March 1939. This article attempts to show that this period in Besteiro’s life was not of total political inactivity: even from outside the positions of responsibility, he tried to exert his influence within Spanish socialism; in particular, this article analyses Besteiro’s stand in two key moments: the semester prior to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and the crisis of the socialist party in 1938. For some of his contemporaries, the Besteiro option existed at different moments and for different roles, namely as President of the Republic in 1936, President of PSOE and member of a government to negotiate peace in 1938.

Abstract:
Background:With the objective to improve quantification of sacroiliitis maintaining a practical perspective, our group developed SCAISS, a semi-automated method to measure bone marrow edema (BME) in MR images from sacroiliac (SI) joints, combining semi-axial and semi-coronal slices [1]. The 2009 ASAS definition of active sacroiliitis was based on standard semi-coronal slices only, perpendicular semi-axial slices being considered but optional [2]. We hypothesized a simplified SCAISS (s- SCAISS) method using only semi-coronal slices. Objectives:To analyze the validity and reliability and feasibility of a simplified Spanish tool for semi-automatic quantification of sacroiliac inflammation by magnetic resonance in spondyloarthritis (s- SCAISS) using a semi-coronal scan instead of combining semi-axial and semi-coronal slices. Methods:The s- SCAISS was designed as an image-processing software. We performed the following analysis: (1) three readers evaluated SI images of 23 patients with axial SpA and various levels of BME severity with the s-SCAISS and SCAISS, and two non-automated methods, SPARCC and Berlin; (2) 20 readers evaluated 12 patients images, also with the three methods. Convergent validity, reliability and feasibility were estimated. Results:Theinterobserver reliability(ICC and 95% CI) in the three observers’ study was: s-SCAISS = 0.69 (0.490–0.845); SCAISS= 0.770 (0.580–0.889); Berlin = 0.725 (0.537–0.860); and SPARCC = 0.824 (0.671–0.916). In the 20 observers’ study, ICC was: s- SCAISS = 0.66 (0.478–0.863); SCAISS = 0.801 (0.653–0.927); Berlin = 0.702 (0.518–0.882); and SPARCC = 0.790 (0.623–0.923).Spearman correlation coefficientbetween s- SCAISS _BERLIN was r= 0.712 and s- SCAISS_ SPARCC was r= 0.779 and s- SCAISS _SCAISS was r= 0.90. Similar results showed SCAISS BERLIN and SCAISS_ SPARCC (r= 0.729 and 0.840), respectively. Conclusion:The simplified SCAISS (s-SCAISS) using only semi-coronal slice permits a valid, reliable, and fast calculation of overall BME lesion at the SI joint.References:[1]Zarco P, Almodóvar R, Bueno Á, Molinero LM; SCAISS Study Group.Development and validation of SCAISS, a tool for semi-automated quantification of sacroilitis by magnetic resonance in spondyloarthritis. AbstractJosé de Carvajal and Zenón de Somodevilla emerged as the main architects of Spanish foreign policy amidst the strained international climate of the mid-eighteenth century. In 1748, foreign affairs offices across Europe engaged in conversations surrounding peace as they sought time to regain strength after such a long war. It was within the context of this nascent alliance system that Carvajal and Somodevilla developed their geo-political strategy. In spite of their differences, both statesmen tried to guarantee Spain’s position as a major European power and understood that, going forward, European political balance would be determined by colonial and maritime supremacy.

Abstract:
The climate and weather forecast predictive capability for precipitation intensity is limited by gaps in the understanding of basic cloud-convective processes. Currently, a better understanding of the cloud-convective process lacks observational constraints, due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate, vertically resolved pressure, temperature, and water vapor structure inside and near convective clouds. This manuscript describes the potential advantages of collecting sequential radio occultation (RO) observations from a constellation of closely spaced low Earth-orbiting satellites. In this configuration, the RO tangent points tend to cluster together, such that successive RO ray paths are sampling independent air mass quantities as the ray paths lie “parallel” to one another. When the RO train orbits near a region of precipitation, there is a probability that one or more of the RO ray paths will intersect the region of heavy precipitation, and one or more would lie outside. The presence of heavy precipitation can be discerned by the use of the polarimetric RO (PRO) technique recently demonstrated by the Radio Occultations through Heavy Precipitation (ROHP) receiver onboard the Spanish PAZ spacecraft. This sampling strategy provides unique, near-simultaneous observations of the water vapor profile inside and in the environment surrounding heavy precipitation, which are not possible from current RO data.

This article explores the relevance of radar sensing methods. The principles of its operation and the advantages of use are considered: the independence of obtaining images from weather conditions and the time of day, the possibility of wide viewing at long ranges with high resolution and the flexibility of controlling and changing radar parameters, which allows you to vary the position and size of the viewing area, resolution and forms of information. In addition, the main satellite radar systems were considered: satellites of the European Space Agency ERS-1,2 and ENVISAT; Canadian satellites of MDA Radarsat-1,2; satellites launched by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the leading European space company Airbus DS-TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X; Spanish satellite PAZ; Japanese satellites ALOS and ALOS-2; Italian constellation of Cosmo-SkyMed satellites; Indian satellite RISAT-1; English satellite NovaSAR-1; Finnish ICEYE satellites; Korean satellite KOMPSAT-5, Chinese satellite Huan Jing 1C, European satellites Sentinel-1 (A, B) and Russian satellites Condor. Also in this article are considered radar spacecraft planned to launch, namely: the second generation of Italian satellites COSMO-SkyMed – CSG – 2; 2 spacecraft ICEYE (Finland); 4 X-band radar satellites SuperView (China); 2 radar satellites Zhuhai (China); ALOS-4 JAXA (Japan); KOMPSAT-6 (Korea), 3 radar spacecraft of the IRS constellation (India), SAOCOM (Argentina), Russian-made satellites Obzor-P1 and Kondor-FKA, in addition, ROSKOSMOS plans to create a space complex that includes an orbital constellation of 6 small-sized spacecraft for radar observation

Abstract:
To fight the virus SARS-CoV-2 spread to Europe from China and to give support to the collapsed public health system, the Spanish Health Authorities developed a field hospital located in the facilities of Madrid exhibition centre (IFEMA) to admit and treat patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infectious disease (COVID-19). The Department of Laboratory Medicine of La Paz University Hospital in Madrid (LMD-HULP) was designated to provide laboratory services. Due to the emergency, the IFEMA field hospital had to be prepared for patient admission in less than 1 week and the laboratory professionals had to collaborate in a multidisciplinary group to assure that resources were available to start on time. The LMD-HULP participated together with the managers in the design of the tests portfolio and the integration of the healthcare information systems (IS) (hospital IS, laboratory IS and POCT management system). Laboratorians developed a strategy to quickly train clinicians and nurses on test requests, sample collection procedures and management/handling of the POCT blood gas analyser both by written materials and training videos. The IFEMA´s preanalytical unit managed 3782 requests, and more than 11,000 samples from March 27th to April 30th. Furthermore, 1151 samples were measured by blood gas analysers. In conclusion, laboratory professionals must be resilient and have to respond timely in emergencies as this pandemic. The lab’s personnel selection, design and monitoring indicators to maintain and further improve the quality and value of laboratory services is crucial to support medical decision making and provide better patient care.

Abstract:
Objective We assessed the validity and reliability of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) short form and the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) (two measures of depressive symptoms) among urban, low-income patients from a heavily indigenous area of Andean Latin America. This is a patient population that is in many ways culturally distinct from the populations that have been included in previous Spanish language validation studies of these instruments. Methods We administered the CES-D Yale version short form and the PHQ-8 to 107 outpatients at public hospitals in La Paz and El Alto, Bolivia. We conducted exploratory factor analysis, checked internal reliability, and examined concordance between the two measures in identifying patients with clinically significant depressive symptoms. Results Internal reliability was high for both scales: PHQ-8 (Cronbach’s α = 0.808) and CES-D (α = 0.825). A one-factor solution for the PHQ-8 was maintained after the removal of one poorly loading item. The CES-D showed a two-factor solution, with items for somatic symptoms and interpersonal problems loading on the same factor as negative affect. Using both the cutoff for depression recommended in prior studies and a sample specific cutoff of ≥1 standard deviation above the mean, the two scales demonstrated only moderate agreement (κ = 0.481–0.486). Conclusions The PHQ may be more appropriate for clinical use in the Andean region, given its greater specificity; however, lower than expected agreement between the scales suggests that they also measure different elements of depression. Irregularities with the factor structure of both scales suggest that further research with this population is needed to better understand depressive symptomology and improve screening in the region.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective Soroxchi/Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that can result in cerebral and pulmonary hypoxia. Neuropsychological research on AMS is minimal and the long-term effects on cognition and behavior are unclear. AMS is associated with cognitive impairments in processing speed, attention, and executive functions as well as neurobehavioral symptoms. This case study delineates the neuropsychological and neurobehavioral changes secondary to bilateral globus pallidus (GP) lesions associated with AMS. Case Description Patient is a 51-year old, primarily Spanish-speaking, male of Mexican descent with 9 years of education, and who had traveled to La Paz, Bolivia (4,070 MASL) for work. Upon arrival, fatigue and dizziness led to hospitalization to treat acute pulmonary edema and hypoxia. Brain MRI revealed hyperintense bilateral GP lesions. Medical history was notable for hyperlipidemia. Psychiatric history was unremarkable. Neuropsychological assessment 4 months post-AMS revealed impairments in visuo-conceptual and speeded complex visuospatial abilities, executive functions, and confrontation naming. Cognitive improvements were noted in delayed recall of non-contextual verbal information and confrontation naming ten months post-AMS. Significant mood and personality changes were reported; patient endorsed anhedonia, fatigue, alexithymia, avolition, and sleep difficulties. Family described patient as depressed, apathetic, and socially withdrawn. Pharmacological and psychotherapy treatments were recommended and initiated. Diagnostic Impressions and Outcomes Findings were consistent with a diagnosis of Mild Neurocognitive Disorder. His family denied neurobehavioral improvements post interventions. Discussion This case study is the first to characterize the long-term neuropsychological and neurobehavioral changes following bilateral GP lesions secondary to AMS. Declines in visual-conceptual abilities reveal a new finding for this type of cerebral incident.

IntroductionStroke is a serious public health problem, given it is a major cause of disability worldwide despite the spread of recanalisation therapies. Enhancement of brain plasticity with stem cell administration is a promising innovative therapy to reduce sequelae in these patients. Methods and analysisWe have developed a phase IIb, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial protocol to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenous administration of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke, concurrently with conventional stroke treatment. Thirty patients will be randomised on a 1:1 basis to receive either intravenous placebo or allogeneic AD-MSCs as soon as possible within the first 4 days from stroke symptom onset. Patients will be followed up to 24 months after randomisation. The primary objective is the safety assessment of early intravenous administration of allogeneic AD-MSCs by reporting all adverse events and neurological or systemic complications in both treatment groups. Secondary objectives assess efficacy of early intravenous AD-MSC treatment in acute ischaemic stroke by evaluating changes in the modified Rankin Scale and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale throughout the follow-up period. In addition, brain repair biomarkers will be measured at various visits.Ethics and disseminationThis clinical trial has been approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of La Paz University Hospital (Madrid, Spain) and by the Spanish Agency of Medication and Health Products and has been registered in Eudra CT (2019-001724-35) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04280003). Abstract:
IntroductionAcute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) constitutes the second most common haematological malignancy in the paediatric population. Current treatment regimens are based on the administration of polychemotherapy, combining high doses of cytarabine with anthracyclines and topoisomerase inhibitors. Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an option for high-risk patients with AML (and for intermediate-risk patients if a sibling donor is available). With this strategy, AML survival has increased substantially; however, it has remained stagnant at approximately 60%, with relapse being the principal culprit. The predominant role of the immune system and natural killer (NK) cells in controlling paediatric AML has gained importance within the context of HSCT. In this protocol, we propose incorporating this cell therapy as an adjuvant treatment through the infusion of activated and expanded haploidentical NK (NKAE) cells in paediatric patients with AML who are in cytological remission after completing consolidation therapy, and with no indication for HSCT.Methods and analysisPatients up to 30 years of age, diagnosed with AML, in their first cytological remission, who have completed both the induction and the consolidation phases of chemotherapy and do not meet the criteria for allogeneic HSCT are eligible. The patients will receive two doses of NKAE cells once a week, using a GMP K562-mbIL15-41BBL stimulus from a haploidentical donor and interleukin 2 subcutaneously. The patients will then be followed up for 36 months to assess the primary endpoint, which is the probability of relapse after NK cell infusion.Ethics and disseminationThis clinical trial was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of La Paz University Hospital and The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and community reporting.Trial registration numberEudraCT code: 2015-001901-15, ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier:NCT02763475.

Of responding institutions (representing 25% of Spanish hospital beds), nearly 75% had active surveillance programs for the prevention and control of surgical-site infections (SSIs), but only 20% performed postdischarge surveillance. Overall, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) was used in 84% of all surgical procedures. For 77% of procedures, there were written guidelines for the choice and use of PAR Cefazolin was the most commonly used antibiotic (38%). Duration of PAP was shorter than 24 hours in 75% of procedures, and only a single dose was given in 52% of procedures. PAP was commonly used in breast (52%) and inguinal hernia repair (69%) procedures, as well as in laparoscopic abdominal surgery (86%). In summary, the use of PAP in Spanish hospitals is adequate, but improvements can be made in the frequency of prolonged PAP and in the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Surveillance systems for SSI, including postdischarge follow-up, also should be improved.

Abstract:
PALABRAS CLAVE: violencia, represión franquista, huidos, guerrillero, ejecuciones extrajudiciales ABSTRACT After the victory of General Franco in the Spanish Civil War, complete peace did not come to all corners of Spain. The lack of a policy of national reconciliation, together with the maintenance of strong repressive activity, led some Republicans to take refuge in the mountains with no other purpose than to save their lives. Over time, and in parallel with the evolution of World War II, the Communist Party of Spain managed to provide these fugitives with political objectives and create guerrilla groups, which contributed to the aggravation of rural violence. In this article, using documentation from military archives, political parties and the security forces, as well as oral history, we address the persistence of violence in rural areas: killings, extrajudicial executions, public executions, ley de fugas, robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault and other forms of excesses and oppression that were normal in rural areas during the 1940s. KEY WORDS: violence, Francoist repression, escapees, guerrilla fighters, extrajudicial executions

Abstract:
On 19 November 1975 Francisco Franco lay dying in Madrid's La Paz hospital. Clutching the cloak of the Virgin del Pilar, and with the ill-gotten relic of St Teresa of Ávila's hand at his bedside, the ailing dictator would soon depart this existence following the withdrawal of life support. For Enrique Moradiellos in Franco: Anatomy of a Dictator, the juxtaposition of modernity and tradition within this deathbed scene was emblematic of the countless paradoxes which characterised the Francoist dictatorship in its later years. Since the dictator's death scholars have continued to grapple with such paradoxes, struggling over how best to define a regime which has come to occupy a notoriously contentious space within contemporary Spanish politics and society. Like a fairground hall of mirrors, historical representations of Francoism have been stretched or squashed by different analytical frames, shaped in many cases by the political and social legacies of the dictatorship. Despite dubious claims to ‘objectivity’, the regime's apologists depict Francoism as a stabilising antidote to the ‘chaos’ of republicanism, conveniently overlooking the destruction and misery which followed the coup of 18 July 1936. Meanwhile, those who seek justice for the regime's victims continue to emphasise the repressive nature of the dictatorship. Though an important component of Francoism's modus operandi, repression does not, by itself, help us to fully understand Francoism's long-term survival or the consent it secured from millions of ordinary Spaniards. The titles under review reflect an increasing willingness to confront Francoism's many contradictions head-on, and to regard the paradoxical nature of the regime not as a conceptual knot to be disentangled, but as a historiographical problem in itself. Historians exploring the experiences of ‘ordinary’ people have proved particularly adept at addressing such complexities, as have scholars adopting comparative or transnational frameworks which reach beyond traditional emphasis on fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The titles surveyed in this article offer a snapshot of recent developments in the field, while signposting potential avenues through which historians of Francoism might contribute to broader discussions within the historiography of modern Europe.

Abstract:
CONFLICT BETWEEN "THE TWO SPAINS" FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF THE SPANISH SOCIETY AND CLASS OPPOSITIONS WITHIN ITThe following discussion focuses on the analysis of the Spanish society in the period between the First and the Second Republic (1875–1931), especially on the social structure and class oppositions within it as well as on identifying the causes leading to the irreconcilable political polarisation of the Spanish society during the Second Spanish Republic (1931–1936). The polarisation culminated in the parliamentary elections on 16 February 1936 and consequently led to the Civil War (1936–1939). The heterogeneity of the republican camp of the Popular Front was the reason for the multi-party Spanish socialism as well as the multi-party nature of the social revolution of 1936.

Abstract:
The Spanish legislation contemplates only as natural and adoptive forms of filiation. In the preconstitutional stage the investigation of paternity was not allowed. Family peace and the protection of marriage made it impossible to claim unrecognized biological filiation. On the occasion of the EC, and subsequent legislative reforms, a system of actions was implemented in Spain that allow the official confirmation of a natural filiation, through a judicial pronouncement. At present, this system of actions still imposes a series of controls and limitations on access to paternity research. We understand that the time has come to extend these guarantees of the right to free investigation of biological filiation. To do this, it will be necessary to carry out a series of legislative reforms that go on to enhance and give an absolute value to the so-called biological DNA test. This test equates the biological truth with the legal Thus we propose it with the present work. Likewise, changes in the legitimacy of these actions are required, as well as raising to the rank of Law, jurisprudential criteria fully consolidated by our Tribunals.

Abstract:
From the early diffusion of Freud's ideas to the development and institutionalization of the Lacanian movement, the Argentine and Spanish psychoanalytic histories have had repeated points of contact. In fact, almost all stages of the Spanish analytical sphere have been shaped by the presence of an ‘Argentine element’. This article aims to explore the history of these encounters between the Spanish and Argentine psychoanalytic worlds. Following the chronology of events, it focuses on the different aspects of this history and shows how the causes, the nature and the consequences of the exchanges evolved.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SPANISH CIVIL WAR IN SLOVENIAN HISTORY TEXTBOOKSThe article examines the image of the 1936–1939 Spanish civil war as presented in Slovenian history textbooks for primary and secondary schools 75 years after the war. In textbooks, this topic is important for presenting the period before World War II in Europe as well as the social and political differences present in Europe at that time. The Spanish civil war raises questions of democracy, fascism, communism, social reforms, violence and revolution in Europe. Initially, the textbook authors briefly discussed the Popular front, democracy and elections, communists and revolution, as well as the support of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany to Franco’s Nationalist faction and the support of Soviet Union to the Republican faction. After 1980, textbooks included a more detailed presentation of the broader social situation, the attitude of artists towards the Spanish civil war, and the impact of war on political divisions in Slovenia during World War II. The first textbooks generally mentioned that a number of Yugoslavs were fighting for the Republican faction, whereas later authors provided more information in accordance with research studies, i.e. that 500 Slovenians participated in the International Brigades.
