Full textThis paper aims to point out the importance of the Sevillian bullfighter and writer Ignacio Sánchez Mejías (1891-1934) in the Spanish Literature. He was an important man of culture in the early twentieth century and also a versatile figure, so we will attempt to address their most significant roles: bullfighter, playwright, novelist, journalist, lecturer, poet, participant in the celebration of the centenary of Góngora in 1927, friend of the poets of the Generation of ‘27, poetic character…. First, we will study the biographical data of the bullfighter and writer in order to know his life, personality and death. We will investigate his relationship with the Generation of '27, glimpsing his true role in the centenary of Góngora, held in Seville in 1927. Deepening the mythical image of the bullfighter, turned into the protagonist of poetic compositions written by Luis Fernández Ardavín, Miguel Hernández, Mariano Brull, Rafael Alberti, Benjamín Péret, Gerardo Diego, Domingo Manfredi and Federico García Lorca. We will analyse the literary work of the bullfighter, showing that he tried to innovate in many of his texts. First, his theatre is investigated and a review of the Spanish theatre of the early twentieth century is also made in order to place his dramatic production in a theatrical context and to verify that he sought to renew the Spanish scene of his time, coming at the vanguard. His plays are studied and compared with contemporaneous and subsequent works: Sinrazón, related with Surrealism, Freud theories and madness; Zaya in which the protagonist is immersed in nostalgia for his bullfighting past; Ni más ni menos, sort of mystery play without sacrament, linked to the forefront; and Soledad, which is unfinished. A revision of the reviews of his staged plays, Sinrazón and Zaya is done. It is also studied the novel, La amargura del triunfo, which delves into issues such as corruption in the bullfighting word, the worries of a bullfighter… This novel is contrasted with other novels of its time. The main character’s psychological introspection that suggests its author’s emotion is observed. Other aspects of Sánchez Mejías are reviewed: he was a journalist in La Unión de Sevilla in 1925; lectured in San Sebastián in 1928 and in New York in 1929; he composed with la Argentinita the flamenco show Las calles de Cádiz, which was a novelty in the Spanish dance of its time; his role as poet manifests in the lyricism of his texts, in an epistle in verse that he sends to Cossío and in a poem dedicated to his daughter. Moreover, the footprint of the bullfighter-writer has been contemplated at present, due to the fact that shows and documentaries inspired by his life and death, have been developed and also several homages, specially organized by Peña Taurina Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. To make the analysis of the figure of Sánchez Mejías and his literary production, it has been conducted a research examining contemporary newspapers, theatre reviews from 1928, books documents and articles from the early twentieth century, and current web pages; the headquarters of his bullfighting club in Manzanares has been visited, and interviewed relatives of the author and members of the club. In conclusion, Ignacio Sánchez Mejías was a significant man in the Spanish literature and also in the bullfighting of the early twentieth century, and he was a writer related to Generation of the '27 who tried to innovate in his literary works by connecting tradition and modernity and imprinting them with his personality. The literary and personal transcendence of this matador is found in his writings and poetic compositions made in his honour, turning him into a mythical hero, whose wake remains to this day.

Full textFrom 1931 to 1936, the Spanish Second Republic carried out the project of the Misiones Pedagógicas in rural towns and villages in order to promote social justice and cultural communication. Intellectuals and artists inspired by the previous work of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and the ideas of Manuel Bartolomé Cossío, gave birth to a cultural, pedagogical and political experience that expressed the singularity of Spanish modernity. The juxtaposition of elements from the cultural heritage (medieval, modern and contemporary images, devices and ideas), the search for the alma del pueblo (Antonio Machado) and the profundidad de España (José Val del Omar), the use of modern technologies (photography, gramophone and cinema), the dialogue with the avantgardes, and the creation of a diffusive pedagogical praxis, configurated a cultural policy defined by its own actors as “extravagant”. From a historical broad perspective, this thesis offers a new critical reading of the Misiones Pedagógicas, placing them in a cultural context that goes beyond the educational field.

Full textThis Thesis offers a new approach to the historiography of Spanish art in the early 20th Century, specifically to the landscape genre. The research draws on the historicist method to show that in Spain, art accompanied beliefs and values between 1915 and 1926. Spanish society did not accept the avant-garde of the time (Futurism, Cubism and Expressionism) and questioned the so-called Arte Nuevo [New Art], which was merely a transposition of French Post-Impressionism brought to Spain by Spanish painters in Paris. Viewers rejected art work to the same extent as it failed to interpret their recognisable beliefs, values and familiar representations. Six generations of landscape artists are analysed that influenced the generations focused on in this study: that of 1914 and 1927. This thesis is based upon the “Theory of Generations” propounded by Ortega y Gasset and on the twelve volumes of the work “El año Artístico”.

Full textThis thesis aims to compile and analyze the literary criticism of two important writers, working journalists, in a specific period of time and in a determined media, ie, La Vanguardia, between 1914 and 1936. In the lasts years, researchers of contemporary literature have had the need to study the media diachronically, specifically newspapers, because the role they played as mass communicators and cultural disseminators, was very important, at the end of 19th century and at the begining of the 20th century. During these years, a considerable number of writers used to work in newspapers to earn one's living. They took care of literary criticism of new books, with their own writer's style. In this context, this investigation deals with the study of newspaper articles, literary criticism specifically, as an important and significant part in the literary production of a writer. This thesis contributes to the knowledge of the genre of literary criticism, limited in a space and time -Iberian Peninsula in the twenties and thirties -. The research, also wants to shed a little more light on the knowledge of two prominent figures of Catalan culture, which used the Spanish language to communicate: Mario Verdaguer and Agustí Calvet, Gaziel. Both were recognized authors by their contemporaries and by present researchers, but their critical facets have been forgotten, even though their literary criticism's production is abundant and significant. To get these objectives we have looked for all the articles published by Verdaguer and Gaziel in La Vangaurdia, we inventoried and classified them in a database. After that, we analyse the literary theme articles to configurate the literary though, the conception of the criticism's nature and the methodology used by each one. The research increases the understanding of these two writers at the same time that contributes to the knowledge of the critical genre, in a moment of the literature history and evidence links between journalism and literature.
Marín, Ureña José Manuel. "La figura del ángel en la generación del 27." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Murcia, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/10957.
Full textThrough this investigation we try to understand the sense that the image of the angel, as much in its celestial side as in the infernal, has in poets of the 27 ' s writings. For development of this assignment the estab lishment of theoretical principles with regard to the figure of the angel was necessary. Those principles are clarfied in the first chapter of our study: differentation between the judeochristian model of the angel and its textual formulation; determination of the true literary nature of the divine spirits; concretion of the analysis space. Due to the pair tradition/vanguard is one of the characteristic feature of the poetic group of 27, the angelic powers are studied not only considering other contemporary authors' works of the writers of 27 but also directing the glance towards the past. This way, we make a detailed revision of the image of the angels and devils in our literary history from Medieval Age to the present time, going to some excellent angelic manifestations of other countries. After this trip, we advance into the codification of the figure of the angel in the most recognized ten authors of the generation of 27, without forgetting the contributions of other personalities that conform the denominated surroundings of 27. We study the materializa tions of the angel in all varieties of genre practiced by these authors (poetry, narrative, theater, essay) throughout all its artistic creation with the purpose of obtaining a total and rigourous knowledge. Through an individualized analysis of the angel in each one of the poets of 27 we will verify how these combining tradition, vanguard, and personal worlds, elaborated a literary angelical program in wich all the expressive varieties of the ultra earth beings were contained. Examining the literary development of the angel in generation of 27, we can say that these writers found in the winged spirits an instrument to catch, respecting the essence of the angel, their particular ultrareality or trascendente to wich to aspire, as much if this level was in they themselves as if it was in surrounding reality. Cernuda and its masculine model; Salinas and Guillén' s search of the truth behind the appearance; Prados and bis strip to the inapren sible, or Alberti with the dramatized accomplishment of his conflict. The angel, therefore, continued being emblem of the invisible, or of wich only each poet was able to catch.
Fourrel, de Frettes Cécile. "L'évolution du rapport à l'image de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1908-1928)." Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012TOU20081.
Full textIn 1916, the Valencia-born Spanish writer V. Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928) started a career in cinema and shot Sangre y arena (Blood and Sand), a film adapted from his 1908 novel. Shortly after, the author left for Latin America where he stopped writing novels until 1913. This hiatus, considered by literary critics to be the result of a lack of inspiration, brought about an opening to new artistic ventures in which the image held center stage. Then, during World War I, the writer designed a quantity of film projects; in terms of writing, these coincided with the elaboration of the "cinematographic novel". Finally, the last years of his life were devoted to writing for Hollywood (scenarios, novels, stories). Film studies have recently looked into the Blasquian contribution to the history of Spanish cinematography, but literary critics have scarcely taken an interest in the aesthetic evolution entailed by the novelist's orientation towards the big screen. Moreover, if the Hollywood adaptations of his stories are well-known, the relation of the writer to the cinematography of the WWI era is overlooked despite the fact that it is crucial to the understanding of the evolution of Blasco Ibáñez's writing. In the same way, his relation to the production line in Hollywood should be clarified in the light of unpublished documents. This thesis, based on the analysis of textual and iconographic elements found in French, Spanish and American collections, proposes to throw light on the way in which the advent of the new cinematographic medium may have motivated V. Blasco Ibáñez to rethink his novel writing practice and the distribution of his narratives
