Full textThis paper aims to point out the importance of the Sevillian bullfighter and writer Ignacio Sánchez Mejías (1891-1934) in the Spanish Literature. He was an important man of culture in the early twentieth century and also a versatile figure, so we will attempt to address their most significant roles: bullfighter, playwright, novelist, journalist, lecturer, poet, participant in the celebration of the centenary of Góngora in 1927, friend of the poets of the Generation of ‘27, poetic character…. First, we will study the biographical data of the bullfighter and writer in order to know his life, personality and death. We will investigate his relationship with the Generation of '27, glimpsing his true role in the centenary of Góngora, held in Seville in 1927. Deepening the mythical image of the bullfighter, turned into the protagonist of poetic compositions written by Luis Fernández Ardavín, Miguel Hernández, Mariano Brull, Rafael Alberti, Benjamín Péret, Gerardo Diego, Domingo Manfredi and Federico García Lorca. We will analyse the literary work of the bullfighter, showing that he tried to innovate in many of his texts. First, his theatre is investigated and a review of the Spanish theatre of the early twentieth century is also made in order to place his dramatic production in a theatrical context and to verify that he sought to renew the Spanish scene of his time, coming at the vanguard. His plays are studied and compared with contemporaneous and subsequent works: Sinrazón, related with Surrealism, Freud theories and madness; Zaya in which the protagonist is immersed in nostalgia for his bullfighting past; Ni más ni menos, sort of mystery play without sacrament, linked to the forefront; and Soledad, which is unfinished. A revision of the reviews of his staged plays, Sinrazón and Zaya is done. It is also studied the novel, La amargura del triunfo, which delves into issues such as corruption in the bullfighting word, the worries of a bullfighter… This novel is contrasted with other novels of its time. The main character’s psychological introspection that suggests its author’s emotion is observed. Other aspects of Sánchez Mejías are reviewed: he was a journalist in La Unión de Sevilla in 1925; lectured in San Sebastián in 1928 and in New York in 1929; he composed with la Argentinita the flamenco show Las calles de Cádiz, which was a novelty in the Spanish dance of its time; his role as poet manifests in the lyricism of his texts, in an epistle in verse that he sends to Cossío and in a poem dedicated to his daughter. Moreover, the footprint of the bullfighter-writer has been contemplated at present, due to the fact that shows and documentaries inspired by his life and death, have been developed and also several homages, specially organized by Peña Taurina Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. To make the analysis of the figure of Sánchez Mejías and his literary production, it has been conducted a research examining contemporary newspapers, theatre reviews from 1928, books documents and articles from the early twentieth century, and current web pages; the headquarters of his bullfighting club in Manzanares has been visited, and interviewed relatives of the author and members of the club. In conclusion, Ignacio Sánchez Mejías was a significant man in the Spanish literature and also in the bullfighting of the early twentieth century, and he was a writer related to Generation of the '27 who tried to innovate in his literary works by connecting tradition and modernity and imprinting them with his personality. The literary and personal transcendence of this matador is found in his writings and poetic compositions made in his honour, turning him into a mythical hero, whose wake remains to this day.

Full textFrom 1931 to 1936, the Spanish Second Republic carried out the project of the Misiones Pedagógicas in rural towns and villages in order to promote social justice and cultural communication. Intellectuals and artists inspired by the previous work of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and the ideas of Manuel Bartolomé Cossío, gave birth to a cultural, pedagogical and political experience that expressed the singularity of Spanish modernity. The juxtaposition of elements from the cultural heritage (medieval, modern and contemporary images, devices and ideas), the search for the alma del pueblo (Antonio Machado) and the profundidad de España (José Val del Omar), the use of modern technologies (photography, gramophone and cinema), the dialogue with the avantgardes, and the creation of a diffusive pedagogical praxis, configurated a cultural policy defined by its own actors as “extravagant”. From a historical broad perspective, this thesis offers a new critical reading of the Misiones Pedagógicas, placing them in a cultural context that goes beyond the educational field.

Full textThis work aims to study and analyze the special regime of the municipality of Barcelona. With a remote historical background that started in the mid-thirteenth century, the current system is constituted by an Act of Parliament of Catalonia, Law 22/1998, of 30 December, the Municipal Charter of Barcelona; and State Law 1/2006 of 13 March, approving the Special Regime of the municipality of Barcelona is regulated; in addition to the development and implementation of both the working of the regulatory powers of the City of Barcelona. Following the reform of the Statute of Autonomy of 2006 and the incorporation of new section 89 to its body is part of the block of constitutionality: «The municipality of Barcelona has a special system established by an Act of Parliament. The City Council of Barcelona may propose the modification of this special system and, in accordance with laws passed by Parliament and Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, shall participate in the preparation of Government bills affecting this special system and shall be consulted during the parliamentary proceedings of other legislative initiatives affecting the special system». This is not to carry out a mere systematic review of the current regime but it aims at unraveling the historical, constitutional, administrative and European cues that inform it. In the first part, and with introductory nature, the origins, formation and development of the special regime are studied from its inception in the time of King James I the Conqueror to the Spanish Constitution of 1978 contextualized in the Spanish legal system. The second focuses on the progressive adaptation from 1978 to the current constitutional framework and its update in constitutional and administrative aspects. In the third and last, the Europeanization of the special scheme is analyzed for the incidence of European Union law and the European Charter of Local Self-Government.

Full textThis thesis aims to rediscover the figure of Juan Ramón Masoliver as the central axis of Barcelona's post-war cultural panorama through his most ambitious and significant project, the anthology collection Poesía en la mano. This collection published in the early 1940s, represented the consecration of Masoliver as anthologist, translator, editor and critic and the modernization and Europeanization of the cultural scene according to the lesson of excellence and cosmopolitanism apprehended during his intimate collaboration and friendship with Ezra Pound in the Rapallo of the 1930s.

Full textThis Thesis offers a new approach to the historiography of Spanish art in the early 20th Century, specifically to the landscape genre. The research draws on the historicist method to show that in Spain, art accompanied beliefs and values between 1915 and 1926. Spanish society did not accept the avant-garde of the time (Futurism, Cubism and Expressionism) and questioned the so-called Arte Nuevo [New Art], which was merely a transposition of French Post-Impressionism brought to Spain by Spanish painters in Paris. Viewers rejected art work to the same extent as it failed to interpret their recognisable beliefs, values and familiar representations. Six generations of landscape artists are analysed that influenced the generations focused on in this study: that of 1914 and 1927. This thesis is based upon the “Theory of Generations” propounded by Ortega y Gasset and on the twelve volumes of the work “El año Artístico”.
