Abstract:
The degradation process of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) such as monolayered La2Zr2O7, composite 50% La2Zr2O7 + 50% 8YSZ, and double-ceramic layer (DCL) La2Zr2O7/50% La2Zr2O7 + 50% 8YSZ/8YSZ was investigated. Coatings were deposited using the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process (ceramic layer and bond-coat) on the Ni-based superalloy substrate with Ni-22Cr-10Al-1Y bond-coat. The thickness of the ceramic top-coats in all cases were 300 µm. In the case of La2Zr2O7/8YSZ, the internal sublayer was built from 8YSZ powder whereas the outer from La2Zr2O7. Between both sublayers’ “composite” a 50% La2Zr2O7 + 50% 8YSZ zone was present. The “composite” 50% La2Zr2O7 + 50% 8YSZ TBC system was sprayed from two different feedstock powders with equal weight ratios. In the first part of the investigation, the microstructural characterization of the TBCs was presented. The main goals were related to the characterization of the degradation processes in different TBC systems with special emphasis on the phenomenon in the thermally grown oxide (TGO) zone related to oxidation, and the phenomenon related to phase stability in ceramic top-coats as related to temperature influence. The oxidation test was carried out in air at 1100 °C for 500 h. In the second step of the investigation, the numerical simulation of the monolayered TBC 8YSZ and La2Zr2O7 systems was analyzed from the stress distribution point of view. Additionally, the two-layered TBC coating of the DCL type was also analyzed.

Abstract:
La2Zr2O7 as the thermal barrier coating material draws more and more attention because of its greater thermal physical properties than YSZ, while its further application is restricted by its poor mechanical properties. In this paper, certain ZrO2 is added into the La2Zr2O7 ceramics in order to improve its mechanical properties. La2Zr2O7 ceramic superfine powder was synthesized by the co-precipitation method and samples of La2Zr2O7-xZrO2(x=0, 10%, 20%, 30%)were prepared by pressureless sintering process. The microstructure and properties of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), three-point bend tests, SENB, laser impulse thermal conductivity instrument and high-temperature expansion instrument. Owing to the partial solid solubility in the La2Zr2O7-xZrO2 ceramics, ZrO2 exists in the form of m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. With the addition of ZrO2, the mechanical properties of La2Zr2O7-xZrO2 ceramics first increase, then decrease. When the addition amount of ZrO2 reaches 20%, the fracture toughness comes to the greatest value 2.41 MPa·m1/2. When the addition amount of ZrO2 reaches 10%, the bending strength comes to the greatest value 202.4 MPa. The thermal conductivity of the La2Zr2O7-xZrO2 ceramics is lower than YSZ. The thermal conductivity of the La2Zr2O7-xZrO2 ceramic decrease at 1400 °C as the addition amount of ZrO2 increases, resulting from the higher intrinsic thermal conductivity of ZrO2 than that of La2Zr2O7. The thermal expansion coefficient of the La2Zr2O7-xZrO2 ceramics decreases slowly after about 350 °C and decrease rapidly at about 1000 °C, and then increase rapidly due to the transformation of m-ZrO2 to t-ZrO2.

Abstract:
TiO2/La2Zr2O7 composites were fabricated by sol-gel method. The composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption. The results showed that TiO2 was uniformly coated on the surface of La2Zr2O7 powders. The BET surface area of TiO2/La2Zr2O7 composites was 26.78 m2/g, which was larger than that of La2Zr2O7. Also, the photodegradation of methyl orange was used to evaluate its photocatalytic property. It was found that TiO2/La2Zr2O7 composites showed good photocatalytic activity and the decomposition of methyl orange had basically completed within 30 min.

Abstract:
In order to achieve better understanding of the effect of dopant (Sc, Y, Yb, Hf and Ce) on elastic stiffness and thermal properties of La2Zr2O7. The related calculations were performed using the first principles methods. The predicted elastic constants indicate that La2Zr2O7 and oxidations-La2Zr2O7 (oxidations refer to Sc2O3, Y2O3, Yb2O3, HfO2 and CeO2) are mechanically stable structures. And then the numerical estimates of bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus were performed using the calculated elastic constants. After these mechanical properties are obtained, sound velocity, Debye temperature and theoretical minimum thermal conductivity of La2Zr2O7 and oxidations-La2Zr2O7 are calculated and analyzed in detail. The available experimental results and our calculations are basically satisfactory. The calculated results indicate that Young’s modulus, mean sound velocity, Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity of La2Zr2O7 can be decreased by dopants. CeO2 has extraordinary ability to decrease thermal conductivity in these dopant oxidations.

Transparent La2Zr2O7 with cubic pyrochlore structure was first fabricated by reactive spark plasma sintering using commercially available La2O3 and ZrO2 powders. Single phase of pyrochlore La2Zr2O7 was obtained at a sintering temperature of 1673 K and sintering pressure at 100 MPa for 2.7 ks. The La2Zr2O7 sintered body had a uniform grain size of 1.5 m and exhibited 68% transmittance in the wavelength range of 4–6 m.

In order to reduce the difficulty and cost of manufacturing and improve the high temperature oxidation and thermal shock properties of nickel-based superalloy, a thin La2Zr2O7 thermal barrier coating without bond coat was successfully prepared by laser-cladding using La2Zr2O7 powders on a nickel-based superalloy substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used to characterize the microstructure of the coating. The high temperature oxidation and thermal shock properties of the coating were evaluated by the air isothermal oxidation method at 1100 °C for 110 h and thermal cycling method at 25~1100 °C, respectively. The results show that the coating is mainly composed of La2Zr2O7 phase. The oxidation weight gain rate of the coating is about two-thirds of that of the substrate, and the first crack thermal shock lifetime of the coating is about 1.67 times of that of the substrate. The oxidation products of the coating are mainly Fe2O3, Cr2O3, NiCr2O4, Nb2O5 and La2Zr2O7. The existence of La2Zr2O7 phase in the coating is the main reason for the improvement of its oxidation resistance at 1100 °C and its thermal shock resistance at 25~1100 °C.

Abstract:
Based on La2Zr2O7 ceramic for thermal barrier coatings, LaSmZr2O7 ceramic doped with samarium ion was successfully prepared using solid state reaction method. The pellets were sintered at 1600°C for 10 hours in air. The phase structure, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of LaSmZr2O7 ceramic and La2Zr2O7 ceramic were measured by XRD, laser-flash device, high-temperature dilatometry, respectively. The results show that the crystal structure of LaSmZr2O7 ceramic is not affected by the doped samarium ion in the zirconium lattice. The thermophysical results show that the thermal conductivity of the LaSmZr2O7 ceramic is lower than that of La2Zr2O7 ceramic, while the thermal expansion coefficient is higher than that of La2Zr2O7 ceramic. These results indicate that LaSmZr2O7 ceramic or Ln2Zr2O7 ceramics doped with other rare earth ions could be candidate materials for future thermal barrier coatings.

Abstract:
In this study, the response of Pu2Zr2O7 and La2Zr2O7 to electronic radiation is simulated, employing an ab initio molecular dynamics method. It is shown that Pu2Zr2O7 undergoes a crystalline-to-amorphous structural transition with 0.3% electronic excitation, while for La2Zr2O7, the structural amorphization occurs with 1.2% electronic excitation. During the microstructural evolution, the anion disorder further drives cation disorder and eventually results in the structural amorphization of Pu2Zr2O7 and La2Zr2O7. The difference in responses to electron radiation between Pu2Zr2O7 and La2Zr2O7 mainly results from the strong correlation effects between Pu 5f electrons and the smaller band gap of Pu2Zr2O7. These results suggest that Pu2Zr2O7 is less resistant to amorphization under local ionization rates that produce a low level of electronic excitation, since the level of the concentration of excited electrons is relatively low in Pu2Zr2O7. The presented results will advance the understanding of the radiation damage effects of zirconate pyrochlores.

In order to improve the seawater corrosion resistance of Inconel 718 superalloy, a La2Zr2O7/NiCoCrAlY thermal barrier coating corrosion resistant to 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution was prepared by laser cladding on Inconel 718 superalloy. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and electrochemical techniques were used to study the microstructure and the corrosion performance of the coating in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The results show that the thermal barrier coating is mainly composed of primary La2Zr2O7 phase and γ + laves/δ phase eutectic structure. The corrosion potential and corrosion current of the coating in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution are higher and lower than that of the Inconel 718 substrate, respectively, indicating that the corrosion performance of the coating is better than that of the Inconel 718 substrate. The presence of La2Zr2O7 phase in the thermal barrier coating is the main reason for its corrosion resistance to 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.

AbstractLanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7) nano-crystalline films with cubic structure have been successfully prepared by a facile synthesis approach called reactive spray deposition technology (RSDT). La2Zr2O7 nanoparticles are produced by combusting a precursor solution of lanthanum acetylacetonate hydrate and zirconium acetylacetonate dissolved in an organic solvent mixture. The nanoparticles formed during the combustion process are directly deposited onto the substrate. The composition and microstructure of the as-deposited films are extensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The thermal diffusivities of the films are investigated by the means of laser flash method.

Abstract:
To fully exploit the strengths of La2Zr2O7 pyroclores and promote them as a next-generation thermal barrier coating (TBC), the improvements of their thermally insulating property and fracture toughness are studied in this thesis. A strong phonon scattering source, rattlers, is found in Y3+-doped La2Zr2O7 pyrochlores. Rattlers dramatically flatten k (thermal conductivity)-T curves, or even make k approach the amorphous limit. The presence of rattlers is strongly dependent on (1) oversized atomic cages that are formed in pyrochlores; and (2) the occupation of smaller guest ions in those oversized cages. To maximize the rattling effect, In3+/Sc3+ ions that are much smaller than Y3+ are introduced to the La2Zr2O7 lattice. As envisaged, the smaller ions in the oversized lattice voids make k glass-like at a much lower doping content. Nevertheless, they are still not effective in reducing the high temperature plateau kmin. Instead, oxygen vacancies are very effective in reducing kmin, because they generate an electrostatic repulsion force among cations surrounding them, resulting in stronger lattice anharmonicity and weaker bonds. The plateau kmin is reduced dramatically by the filling of the B-sites in La2Zr2O7 with a 21% larger (and 50% heavier) Ce4+ guest ion rather than a 96% heavier (but similar-sized) Hf4+ ion, suggesting that a large absolute size of substitutional atoms is more effective in reducing kmin than a heavy absolute mass. This is because: (1) kmin is proportional to (E/M)0.5 (where E is the elastic modulus and M is the average atomic mass); (2) a larger size of guest ions tends to produce a weaker ionic bond and consequently, a lower E; and (3) the changing extent of E by introducing larger guest ions is much greater than that of M induced by adding heavier ones. Lastly, the fracture toughness (KIc) has been increased by dispersing the tetragonal 3 mol% Y2O3-stabilized zirconia (t-3YSZ) particulates in the La2Zr2O7 (LZ) matrix. The tendency of the dispersive t-3YSZ second phases transforming to monoclinic (m) phases strongly depends on the volume fraction introduced. For samples made from equilibrium route, they are toughened by phase transformations within the dispersive t-3YSZ second phases and a crack shielding effect arising from the residual compressive stress within the LZ matrix. An anticipated increase of KIc from ferroelastic toughening together with the residual compressive stress toughening highlights a potential to improve coating durability by depositing t’-3YSZ/LZ composite TBCs by the non-equilibrium route.

Ces travaux ont portés sur l’élaboration de dépôts de La2Zr2O7 par projection plasma de solution (SPPS) pour une application barrière thermique pour un moteur spatial. Différentes solutions de précurseurs de solvants divers ont été formulées pour la synthèse des poudres et des différents dépôts. Les précurseurs et les solvants ont un impact important sur les interactions en solution entrainant des modifications des propriétés des poudres, particulièrement les phases cristallines ou la densification. De même, la variété des solutions étudiées et l’optimisation des paramètres de projections ont permis l’élaboration de différentes microstructures de dépôts (dense, homogène poreux et colonnaire). La microstructure colonnaire présente la meilleure résistance aux essais de cycles thermiques par rapport aux autres dépôts développés. Il a également était établie une corrélation entre les dépôts réalisés par SPPS et les données structurales des poudres<br>These work deal with the conception of La2Zr2O7 coatings by Solution Precursor Plasma Spraying (SPPS) for thermal barrier application in space engine. Different precursors’ solutions of various solvents were prepared for powder synthesis and the realization of different coatings. Precursors and solvents have important effect on interactions in solution leading to the modification of powder properties, especially crystalline phases or densification. Similarly the diversity of studied solutions and the optimisation of thermal projection parameters allowed the elaboration of various coatings’ microstructures (dense, homogeneous porous and columnar). Abstract:
Le Coated Conductor est un empilement de couches tampon sur un substrat, il est composé d'un substrat métallique, de couches tampon, d'une couche d'YBCO et d'une couche protectrice. Développer de bons substrats métalliques, simplifier l'architecture des couches tampon et trouver des méthodes de fabrication d'YBCO économiques sont les sujets essentiels de ce domaine. On a développé un nouveau substrat bimétallique Cu-Ni par dépôt électrochimique d'une couche de Ni sur un ruban de cuivre texturé et on discute comment déposer un film de La2Zr2O7 (LZO), de même texture, sur un substrat métallique par un processus chimique en solution (CSD). La fabrication de rubans de Cu texturé par un procédé de laminage-recristallisation est présentée en premier, puis on s'intéresse au dépôt électrochimique du Ni sur ces rubans. La stabilité thermique de la texture et les propriétés magnétiques de ces substrats Cu-Ni est discutée. Le dépôt d'une couche tampon de LZO texturée sur ces substrats par le procédé CSD confirme leur intérêt potentiel pour les Coated Conductors. Le dépôt de couches de LZO sur divers substrats métalliques, la préparation de précurseurs et des substrats, la croissance épitaxiale de couches tampon de LZO sont discutés en détail. On montre que l'acetylacétonate dissout dans l'acide propionique est une bonne solution. Une couche de S de structure c(2x2) à la surface du substrat permet le contrôle de l'orientation initiale des couches de LZO. Le carbone résiduel issu de la synthèse de LZO est un facteur inhibant la croissance des grains de LZO mais son gradient sous la surface est utile. La maitrise de l'ensemble de ces facteurs permet la formation de couches de haute qualité.

Abstract:
L'enjeu de cette recherche est l'étude des couches tampons CeO2 et La2Zr2O7 pour supraconducteurs destinés au transport de l'énergie. Nous avons utilisé des méthodes douces et peu onéreuses pour l'élaboration des couches CeO2/SrTiO3 et La2Zr2O7/LaAlO3 tel que la méthode MOD (Metal Organic Deposition) qui s'avère bien adaptée pour la fabrication des couches tampons pour les supraconducteurs déposés (coated conductors). La comparaison de différents précurseurs de Cérium a été faite dans le but d'obtenir le précurseur adéquat pour le processus MOD. Le spin coating a été utilisé pour faire des dépôts de solution de précurseurs Ce(EH)3 et LZ(propionique) sur différents substrats. Les analyses thermogravimétriques des différents précurseurs ont permit la détermination du mode de décomposition (perte de masse en fonction de la température), d'estimer l'humidité absorbée par les précurseurs, de déterminer la température de cristallisation de l'oxyde et de discuter de la nature mixte ou pas du proprionate de lanthane-zirconium. L'analyse de microstructure et de la texture des films CeO2 et La2Zr2O7 est faite par diffraction des rayons X (balayages -2, -scan, -scan et figures de pôles). L'AFM et le MEB ont permis d'étudier la rugosité, la topologie et la morphologie de la surface. Le traitement thermique des couches tampons Ce(EH)3/SrTiO3 et (La(prop)3+ Zr(prop)4)/LAO sous différentes atmosphères nous a permis de différentier la croissance poly cristalline de la croissance épitaxiale. L'élimination du carbone résiduel dans les joints de grains bloquant la croissance des grains a été réalisée par le contrôle de la pression partielle d'oxygène lors du palier de cristallisation ; cette étape permet d'améliorer la texture des couches tampons. La vitesse de montée en température a une influence sur la nucléation dont l'influence a été étudiée. L'augmentation de la vitesse de montée favorise la nucléation hétérogène et diminue le nombre de nucléus, favorisant la naissance de grains épitaxiés plus gros. Finalement, on a réalisé des multicouches CeO2/La2Zr2O7/LaAlO3 et YBaCuO/CeO2/YSZ/IBAD pour valider les différents résultats obtenus.

Then the Mg2+ from the MgLa2Zr2O8 had been substituted by Co2+, at x = 0.2, the sintering temperature is lowered to 1460℃, with ε_r~23.49, Q×f~82,0000, τf ~-42.21 ppm/℃.Second, a dual-mode square ring line-to-ring band-pass filter that operates at 2.45GHz was designed and fabricated. The bandwidth of the passband can be modulated by changing the perturbation size. In order to suppress spurious response, an open-stub was attached to the feed line. Finally, the pattern was implemented on FR4, Al2O3 and MgLa2Zr2O8 substrates. The measurement results show using the substrates with high dielectric constant and low loss can improve the performance and reduce filter size.

Abstract:
L'enjeu de cette étude est de concevoir des rubans supraconducteurs à faible coûts de production, destinés au transport de courant et la limitation de courant. Nous avons utilisé des méthodes originales et peu onéreuses comme le laminage pour l'élaboration du substrat et les méthodes de dépôt chimique « metal organic decomposition » (MOD) et « metal organic chemical vapor deposition » (MOCVD) pour la réalisation des différentes couches. <br />La technique MOCVD à injection s'avère particulièrement bien adaptée à la fabrication de rubans supraconducteurs car elle permet d'obtenir des couches épitaxiées d'YBCO de façon reproductible et sur de grandes longueurs. Cependant, le dépôt de couches tampon par MOCVD sur des substrats métalliques souples provoque leur oxydation et dégrade leur structure cristalline. L'utilisation combinée des techniques de dépôt MOD et MOCVD a permis de solutionner ce problème : le dépôt d'une première couche tampon de La2Zr2O7 (LZO) par MOD dans une atmosphère réductrice d'Ar + 5%H2 permet d'éviter l'oxydation du substrat et de limiter la diffusion d'O2 lors des dépôts suivants par MOCVD. Deux architectures ont été développées et caractérisées : NiWRABiTS/LZOMOD/YBCOMOCVD et NiWRABiTS/LZOMOD/CeO2MOCVD/YBCOMOCVD. L'étude de ces conducteurs a prouvé que de telles architectures permettent d'atteindre de forts courants critiques : respectivement JcLZO/LZO/YBCO = 0.8 MA/cm2 avec Ic/cm = 34 A/cm, et JcNW/LZO/CeO2/YBCO = 1.2 MA/cm2 avec Ic/cm = 54 A/cm, sur des rubans de plusieurs centimètres de long recouverts d'une couche de 800 nm d'YBCO. <br />Une étude TEM a permis de comprendre la croissance des couches de LZO par MOD et d'observer la formation de porosités pendant la pyrolyse des précurseurs. L'étude combinée EBSD/MO a démontré que la microstructure des substrats est transférée à la couche supraconductrice et a une influence néfaste sur la qualité du film d'YBCO. L'utilisation de couches tampons épaisses (e > 150 nm) permet d'estomper ces défauts et d'améliorer les propriétés supraconductrices des rubans.<br />Finalement, des essais fructueux en limitation de courant, et en transport de courant sous contrainte mécanique, ont permis de valider le procédé de fabrication des rubans pour cette application spécifique.
