A recent study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics listed Registered Nursing among the top occupations in terms of job growth until the year 2022 (American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2015)). This growing demand can be explained in part by the large number of aging baby boomers with multi-morbid health conditions who typically require more treatments and longer length of stay in a variety of healthcare delivery settings (Vetrano et al. (2014)). Given the projected demand growth and reduced mobility of elderly patients, efficient operational research methods have to be developed and deployed for optimizing the process of scheduling the treatment of individual patients in highly resource constrained environments. We will henceforth denote this process as ‘patient scheduling' and provide a problem definition and a review of current approaches in the course of this chapter.

In the article, key aspects related to the accelerated aging of the population in the Republic of Moldova are addressed, highlighting the demographic, economic, and social issues the country faces. This paper looks at the potential for a silver dividend for economic growth in aging societies as people live and work longer. It examines data from both high- and lower-income economies. The authors investigate the channels through which population aging affects economic growth using panel data from 166 economies. They find that lower total factor productivity growth is the main mechanism through which population aging harms economic growth. Labor shortages caused by aging are mostly offset by higher labor force participation rates among older people.

This paper estimates the impact of demographic change on labor productivity growth. The analysis covers a panel of 90 advanced and emerging economies over 1961-2018 and produces three main findings. First, increases in the young and old population shares exert significantly negative effects on labor productivity growth, working via various channels. Second, population aging has a greater negative impact on emerging economies than on advanced economies. Third, automation reduces the negative effects of unfavorable demographic change—in particular, population aging.
