Abstract:
Purpose In past literature, employee has been extensively utilized as input in most data envelopment analysis (DEA) studies, but different labor types are identically defined to be the same input factor without a specific assumption for their heterogeneity. The influence of manual and non-manual labor utilization on performance also has not been investigated in hotel efficiency analyses. The purpose of this study is to assess inefficiency indices derived from manual and non-manual labor, and analyze the influence of labor utilization on hotel’s operational efficiency. Design/methodology/approach Based on the different features of the two labor types, performance indicators are evaluated through the hybrid DEA model. Findings More than 32 per cent of tourist hotels are evaluated as efficient and more than half the hotels have an efficiency score lower than the average. The author evaluated the inefficiency caused by radial inputs that have a greater influence on efficiency. This finding indicates that most hotels are efficient in their utilization of non-manual labor. The investigation of external factors shows that excessive utilization of non-manual labor results in a slight influence on operational efficiency across many non-chain hotels. The author also found the efficiency of non-manual labor utilization to be lower at hotels located in resort areas. Originality/value This study used the hybrid DEA model, in which non-manual and manual labors are assumed as non-radial and radial inputs, respectively, to evaluate efficiency. Finding the significance of heterogeneous assumptions for manual and non-manual labor types is the main contribution to the theory of hotel efficiency measurement.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between capacity utilization and corporate resilience of aviation industry in Nigeria, with a focus on the moderating role of organizational size. Using a correlational research design, the study explores how the dimensions of capacity utilization—labor utilization and technological utilization—affect the measures of corporate resilience, namely adaptability and risk mitigation. A total of 303 respondents were sampled from a population of 1,254 management staff in domestic airlines, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The findings, analyzed using Spearman rank correlation, revealed significant positive relationships between labor utilization and adaptability (r = .534, p < .01) as well as risk mitigation (r = .693, p < .01). Similarly, technological utilization significantly correlated with adaptability (r = .708, p < .01) and risk mitigation (r = .629, p < .01). Furthermore, organizational size was found to moderate the relationship between capacity utilization and corporate resilience, indicating that larger firms benefit more from capacity optimization due to their financial strength and resource availability, while smaller firms require strategic alliances to enhance resilience. These results highlight the critical role of optimizing labor, technology, and organizational size to strengthen resilience in a volatile and high-risk sector like aviation. The study concludes that prioritizing capacity utilization strategies, alongside leveraging organizational size, can enhance the adaptability and risk management capabilities of aviation firms in Nigeria. Recommendations include workforce training, technological innovation, strategic resource planning, and leveraging organizational size for improved resilience.

Abstract:
Background: The World Health Organization-endorsed Robson Ten-Group Classification System (TGCS) is a standard reporting mechanism for cesarean birth, yet this approach is not widely adopted in the United States. Objective: To describe the application and utility of the TGCS to compare hospital-level cesarean births rates, for use in quality improvement and benchmarking. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, secondary data analysis of the Consortium on Safe Labor dataset using data from 228 438 women's births, from 2002 to 2008, in 12 sites across the United States. We stratified births into 10 mutually exclusive groups and calculated within-group proportions of group size and cesarean birth rates for between-hospital comparisons of cesarean birth, trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), and labor induction utilization. Results: There is variation in use of cesarean birth, labor induction, and TOLAC across the 12 sites. Conclusion: The TGCS provides a method for between-hospital comparisons, particularly for revealing usage patterns of labor induction, TOLAC, and cesarean birth. Adoption of the TGCS in the United States would provide organizations and quality improvement leaders with an effective benchmarking tool to assist in reducing the use of cesarean birth and increasing the support of TOLAC.

Abstract:
This study evaluates some possible agricultural household responses to changes in output prices due to Portugal's entry into the EC. The patterns of interest were, continuing expansion in farming, continuing part-time farming and leaving farming. Farm accounts were used to model different farm types and evaluate their farm returns. Simulations were performed, using different technologies, levels of family labor availability, and land area. The results show that part-time farming is a viable alternative in the northwest region and that there are strong economic incentives for traditional farms to specialize and adopt more modern technologies. The dairy system exhibits the highest returns. Traditional farms that do not have some available fixed family labor will face pressures to leave farming; but since family labor with low opportunity cost is more available on the small traditional farms, farm size is not expected to expand rapidly because leaving farming is not likely in a great way. Abstract:
This thesis examines the utilization and management of labour in the British coalmining industry in the period between 1900 and 1940. The period was one in which the British coal industry experienced a dramatic reversal of fortunes. Over the nineteenth century and up until the First World War, output and employment increased rapidly. Expansion had been assisted by the opening-up of large export markets in Europe and by 1913, the British coal industry shipped abroad a third of its output of 287 million tons.

Fernandes, Diina. "Midwives' experiences regarding the utilization of partographs in a Namibian Regional Hospital." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1021158.

Full text
Abstract:
Labour has been characterized as the most dangerous journey a woman undertakes. The reason being, that although it is a natural process, many labouring women suffer complications during labour and childbirth including prolonged or obstructed labour. These complications can result in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The partograph is a monitoring tool that can provide a continuous pictorial overview and is essential to monitor and manage labour. It is recommended by the WHO for use universally by midwives while monitoring labour. However partographs are poorly utilized and most parameters on the partograph are not monitored and findings after reviewing a labouring woman are not documented on the partograph. It is unclear how midwives working in Namibian Health services experience and utilize the partograph during the monitoring of a woman in labour. These may be the factors that hinder the effective utilization of the partograph. The objective of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of midwives regarding the utilization of the partograph for monitoring a labouring woman in a Namibian regional hospital in order to develop guidelines based on the findings to improve the use of the partograph by midwives in order to improve the management of labour. The research design was qualitative, descriptive, explorative and contextual in nature. The research population consisted of midwives working in a regional hospital in Namibia. A purposive and convenient sampling method was used to select participants. Specific inclusion criteria were met and consent was obtained from the participants and from the Regional Health Directorate Management of the hospital where the research was conducted. Interviews were conducted by an independent interviewer within the Department of Health to ensure an unbiased viewpoint. Data were collected by means of semi-structured in depth interviews with a guide, using an audio tape recorder. Field notes were used to record non- verbal communication. As soon as data were saturated, the interviews were stopped. They were then transcribed, verbatim and analysed using the Tesch’s approach as described in (Creswell, 2009:186). The service of an independent coder was utilized to ensure trustworthiness. Trustworthiness was further ensured by using the strategies suggested by Lincoln and Guba’s model, namely credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. Ethical considerations were honoured throughout by adhering to ethical principles during the study. These included ensuring that the participants` rights were respected, they were not harmed and fairness were ensured. On completion of the data analysis a literature control was conducted and existing literature was compared to the findings in order to identify similarities and differences and to verify whether the literature supported the findings. Four main themes that emerged during data analysis are:  Theme 1.Midwives found it a positive experience to use the partograph when caring for a woman in labour.  Theme 2. When a midwife experienced problems in using the partograph, it may lead to detrimental outcomes.  Theme 3. Utilizing the partograph evoked differing emotions in midwives.  Theme 4. Midwives` knowledge and skills in the utilization of the partograph should be updated regularly. By describing the lived experienced of midwives in the maternity ward on the use of the partograph, the midwives had a positive attitude to using the partograph, but they also found it difficult to utilize the instrument as was directed by the (WHO) due to challenges experienced such as: unrealistic staff/patient ratio, shortage of staff, time consuming, insufficient knowledge and skills among midwives and lack of appropriate equipment. There is a specific need to prevent further negative emotions by addressing the challenges experienced. Based on the findings, guidelines for partograph utilization which aimed at improving the midwifery care were developed. Recommendations were made regarding midwifery education, clinical midwifery care and midwifery research.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I examine individual decisions in occupational choice, labor supply, and health care utilization. Occupational choice decisions of female college graduates on whether to teach or not are analyzed to understand the role of fertility and relative wages using a panel estimation method. I also compare the behavioral changes in the labor force participation among teachers and non-teachers conditional on the presence of a new-born baby. Using the human capital model where a worker decides her hours of work responding to wages, and her human capital is accumulated proportional to her hours of work, I predict that the positive relationship between entry wages and post wages. Empirical evidence suggests that the shock in entry wages may be attributed to post wage differentials. I examine individuals?? choice of health insurance plan and utilization of health care services. Empirical evidence shows that there is favorable self-selection into health maintenance organizations (HMOs) plans and that HMO members use more of office-based and hospital outpatient services. It suggests ineffectiveness of HMO plans in reducing utilization.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Cur.) --University of Limpopo, 2011<br>Introduction and aim: Globally it is of paramount importance that all pregnant women in labour are monitored by midwives utilizing a partograph so that a live baby is delivered. Midwives seemed not to utilize the partograph correctly when monitoring women in labour. The purpose of this study was to determine the utilization of the partograph by midwives in the labour wards of Lebowakgomo and Zebediela level 1 hospitals in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The research question was, “What skills and knowledge do midwives have on the utilization of the partograph for monitoring pregnant women in labour”. The objectives of this study were to explore and describe the utilization of the partograph by midwives in Lebowakgomo and Zebediela level 1 hospitals in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province, and to develop guidelines that would assist midwives to effectively utilize the partograph hence provision of quality midwifery care. Research Design and method: The research design was qualitative, descriptive, explorative and contextual in nature. The population comprised all midwives registered with the South African Nursing Council and practicing as such in Lebowakgomo and Zebediela level 1 hospitals. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 15 participants. Data were collected using semi-structured in–depth interviews with a guide. The semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted until data were saturated. Trustworthiness was ensured by credibility, dependability, transferability and confirmability. Ethical clearance to conduct the study was obtained from the University of Limpopo and from the Department Health and Social Development. The principles of informed consent, confidentiality and anonymity were observed during the study. Data were analyzed using the Tesch’s approach as described by Creswell (1994) cited in de Vos (2005:333). Conclusions: The following themes emerged during data analysis: monitoring of foetal status during intrapartum, monitoring of the progress of labour during intrapartum, monitoring of the maternal status during intrapartum, and shortage of staff in the labour wards. Guidelines which aimed at improving midwifery care were formulated.

Chapter 1 examines the relationship among perceived job insecurity, employability and psychological distress in Europe, using cross-country data from the 2010 European Working Conditions Surveys. Chapter 2, using SHARE data (from 2004 to 2013) for 10 European countries, is devoted to the analysis of the (causal) effect of retirement on health care utilization. In particular, it explores the existence of a discontinuous change in health investment at the time of retirement, as suggested by the theory, asking whether this ``puzzling'' jump is associated with the drop in the opportunity cost of time induced by retirement. Abstract:
AbstractAgricultural and food production is fundamentally about exploiting natural resources. Resource utilization in agriculture is especially important now and will continue to be in the future due to the scarcity of natural resources. Both agricultural land and water are becoming increasingly scarce resources worldwide. Increasing production on existing agricultural land is necessary, which demands a greater focus on resource utilization and increasing productivity. The richer and more developed a country, the higher the agricultural productivity. During economic growth, labor productivity increases while labor leaves agriculture. Increasing productivity in agriculture represents both an opportunity and a necessity. Increasing productivity is also achieved by new technology, but parallel to this, organic production and consumption is also an increasing trend. Technological advances resulting in increasing productivity and innovation is constantly driving the agricultural treadmill.

Abstract:
AbstractMicrobial community simulations using genome scale metabolic networks (GSMs) are relevant for many application areas, such as the analysis of the human microbiome. Such simulations rely on assumptions about the culturing environment, affecting if the culture may reach a metabolically stationary state with constant microbial concentrations. They also require assumptions on decision making by the microbes: metabolic strategies can be in the interest of individual community members or of the whole community. However, the impact of such common assumptions on community simulation results has not been investigated systematically. Here, we investigate four combinations of assumptions, elucidate how they are applied in literature, provide novel mathematical formulations for their simulation, and show how the resulting predictions differ qualitatively. Crucially, our results stress that different assumption combinations give qualitatively different predictions on microbial coexistence by differential substrate utilization. This fundamental mechanism is critically under explored in the steady state GSM literature with its strong focus on coexistence states due to crossfeeding (division of labor).

Abstract:
AbstractThe affinity distribution of the antigen-specific memory B cell (Bmem) repertoire in the body is a critical variable that defines an individual’s ability to rapidly generate high-affinity protective antibody specificities. Detailed measurement of antibody affinity so far has largely been confined to studies of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and are laborious since each individual mAb needs to be evaluated in isolation. Here, we introduce two variants of the B cell ImmunoSpot® assay that are suitable for simultaneously assessing the affinity distribution of hundreds of individual B cells within a test sample at single-cell resolution using relatively little labor and with high-throughput capacity. First, we experimentally validated that both ImmunoSpot® assay variants are suitable for establishing functional affinity hierarchies using B cell hybridoma lines as model antibody-secreting cells (ASC), each producing mAb with known affinity for a defined antigen. We then leveraged both ImmunoSpot® variants for characterizing the affinity distribution of SARS-CoV-2 Spike-specific ASC in PBMC following COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. Such ImmunoSpot® assays promise to offer tremendous value for future B cell immune monitoring efforts, owing to their ease of implementation, applicability to essentially any antigenic system, economy of PBMC utilization, high-throughput capacity, and suitability for regulated testing.

Abstract:
Abstract Cleaning, coating, and the nondestructive testing (NDT) of corrosion-susceptible surfaces requires extensive manual labor, often at vertical heights that create a dangerous occupational environment. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAV) can be leveraged to perform some of these tasks, including cleaning and coating, while keeping workers safely on the ground. Drone capabilities have significantly evolved over the past decade, and it is expected that the ubiquity of such systems will continue to increase in the years to come. While no coating or cleaning drone is commercially available at the time of this publication, one company has an existing prototype currently being developed for this application. This prototype is a custom-manufactured drone with a tether to the aircraft from the ground that delivers power and cleaning or coating material. An on-board computer manages flight navigation along with intelligent spraying. While the utilization of this new technology faces many challenges, it is important to recognize the potential and projected growth of such systems. An introduction to the current state of coating and cleaning drones will be discussed, along with limitations and benefits the system can provide to the coatings industry.

Abstract:
&lt;p&gt;This paper presents an innovative viaduct solution using accelerated bridge construction techniques crossing a series of unstable slopes, active landslides, and avalanche and rock fall paths along a treacherous highway section of the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 project in British Columbia, Canada. The utilization of compact precast concrete components significantly minimized on-site labour requirements, improved the constructability, and reduced the construction schedule and cost. Approximately 1.8 km of viaduct structures were designed to span the unstable soils. Significant loads from avalanches and landslides were imposed on the viaducts. The piled foundations were designed to resist the loads as soil failed around the piles during a landslide, rather than fully stabilize the slopes. A unique “drift-link” detail connected the piles to the pier caps to accommodate thermal movement, as well as provide load-sharing between piles for lateral loads.&lt;/p&gt;

Abstract:
Abstract The automotive industry has used in-line conveyor systems to move vehicles through the general assembly process since the early days of vehicle manufacturing in the 20th century. With products shifting to EVs (Electric Vehicle) and the emergence of AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robot), there is an opportunity to transform the assembly process into a more flexible conveyor-less matrix-based system. One key development need is how to structure and optimize such an asynchronous system. This paper presents a new methodology for designing a conveyor-less matrix assembly layout to maximize labor productivity, workstation utilization, and footprint usage, while minimizing the system costs, and cycle times. Specifically, we develop an asynchronous assembly system for the automotive trim area. We aim to answer the question: How do we decide on an optimum number of workstations for the asynchronous assembly system, such that productivity and ROI are maximized? For this, we use cycle times, the number of operations per workstation, reference heights, and precedence graphs as input variables. Similarity matrices are used to quantify the similarity of tools, ergonomics, and human operations between workstations. Workstation utilization percentage and makespan are the metrics used to compare between alternative layouts. Finally, we perform a cost and makespan analysis to evaluate the ratio of trim area costs to total revenue, calculate makespan, and report the best layout found in the study. Quantifying subjective data, repeatability, less setup, and simulation time are the attributes that make this methodology valuable to any virtual commissioning software, an integral part of the smart manufacturing ecosystem.

Abstract:
As technology is rapidly developing, causing antiquated assets to become obsolete at an increasing rate, budgets are becoming further restricted and labs are asked to complete more testing with less resources. It is crucial to ensure your lab is optimizing its return on investment in every facet of the test lab, specifically regarding the utilization of assets and lab space. This paper is a teaching tool of how to best utilize the resources (assets and space) available to you so as to not drain on budget, space or redundant labor. The presentation will provide an overview of standardized process flow for reviewing whether assets are being utilized to an acceptable threshold for the lifecycle of the asset. Knowledge and implementation of this process can contribute to the success of your organization’s profitability and competitive advantage while maintaining an inventory of assets that is right sized for current and future business objectives. Traditionally, utilization studies are executed at a production level to increase the rate of return; this paper will “recalibrate” the original strategy to be applied at a Test Lab level. Proven formulas and methods as described in ASTM E2453-13 and E2495-13, among other sources, as well as utilization study design elements. This paper is intended to provide a broad, flexible template on how to better realize utilization efficiency of your lab operation portfolio.

Abstract:
We estimate the impact of access to information and communication technology on agricultural profitability and child labor among isolated villages in rural Peru. We exploit the timing of an intervention that provided at least one public (satellite) payphone to 6,296 villages that did not previously have communication services. Using a village level panel, we show that profitability increased by 19.7 percent. Moreover, this income shock translated into a reduction in the likelihood of child market and agricultural work of 14 and nine percentage points respectively. Overall, the evidence suggests a dominant income effect in the utilization of child labor.

Abstract:
Autonomous agricultural vehicles are entering the marketplace, performing jobs that current equipment cannot do or are too dangerous for humans to perform. They offer the prospect of greater farm productivity, and they will help to feed the world’s growing population. This report looks at several topics that impact the commercial success of autonomous agricultural vehicles. The economic benefit that an autonomous system brings to a farm will be discussed alongside machine utilization rates, job quality, and labor savings. The need for standards and regulations to help promote the development of safe systems—as well as to define the language around autonomous agriculture—is also considered. Additionally, this report will highlight the importance of reliability in agricultural machinery and how successful commercialization of autonomy will depend on the ability to do the job correctly and consistently. A critical part of commercial success is how the autonomous agricultural vehicle fits into existing farm processes to provide a complete solution for the farmer. It is hoped that this report will help developers interested in commercializing autonomous agricultural vehicles consider more than just the technical problems to solve and make choices beneficial to market adoption.
