The labor intensity (in hours) of the optical method of microbial cell counting in suspension compared to the method of microbial cell counting using a Goryaev chamber is evaluated. The relevance of assessing the production labor intensity of microbial cell counting methods in suspension is related to the need to use them in many studies. Often the commonly used methods are too labour-intensive, time-consuming, or require expensive equipment. Ecological farming, such as organic and low-input farming, is gaining popularity in the public discourse. One question is how this type of farming may impact farm labour from a socio- economic point of view. The article first discusses how low-input farming practices (i.e. with lower reliance on inputs derived from fossil fuels) may affect the economic returns to labour, measured as the farm’s revenue per hour of labour input, on data from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) in 2004-2015 for four European countries. Labour constitutes a major and increasing cost on dairy farms, while at the same time, the availability of skilled labour is decreasing. In addition, younger farmers are placing an increasing emphasis on lifestyle. Consequently, there is an increased interest in milk production systems involving reduced labour inputs. In view of the fact that approximately 33% (O’Brien et al., 2002) of the daily labour input on dairy farms is associated with the milking routine (herding, milking and washing), the adoption of once daily milking would appear to offer considerable potential to reduce labour input

Abstract:
Pastelles are a seasonal staple enjoyed primarily at Christmas time by Trinidadians. At present, pastelle production is limited to home cooks for personal consumption and/or low volume sales (output of 6 to 20 dozens based on demand) as well as established catering companies whose output goes up to the hundreds of dozens. Regardless of the production scale, pastelle making has been a manual process involving long hours and laborious repetitive tasks to achieve the output. The ultimate goal is to design, build and test a prototype to assist pastelle producers with their output. For this project

Abstract:
Despite there being incredible challenges in enhancing livestock development in Kenya, this article isolates product supply and factors input demand responsiveness as the main constraints facing the smallholder. A flexible-Translog profit function permits the application of dual theory in the analysis of livestock product supply and factor demand responsiveness using farm-level household data. The results indicate that own-price elasticities were elastic for cattle, while goat and sheep were inelastic. Cross-price and scale elasticities were found to be within inelastic range in all cases, wit

Abstract:
The Model of Social and Labour Inclusion, a shared system of values, tools, activities and resources aimed at fostering the inclusion of people with disabilities in the Basque Country, has been developing for over 40 years. However, an uncertain global context; the inclusion turn in global and local discourse; and the challenges and opportunities posed by the sustainable transitions, call for building a shared vision among public and private agents of the territory on the challenges that need to be addressed so that the Model can continue contributing to competitiveness for wellbeing in the Ba

Abstract:
The Nordic Council of Ministers’ vision is for the Region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. Cross-border labour market mobility in the Nordic Region will play an important role in achieving that goal. In this working paper, we share the latest data on labour market mobility across national borders in the Nordic Region in the form of both migration and commuting. We also present findings from a review of current literature on labour market mobility in the Nordic Region and present an analytical framework for exploring potential improvements to it. The workin

Windsor, Callan, and Max Zang. Firms' Price-setting Behaviour: Insights from Earnings Calls. Reserve Bank of Australia, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.47688/rdp2023-06.

Abstract:
We introduce new firm-level indices covering input costs, demand and final prices based on listed Australian firms' earnings calls going back to 2007. These indices are constructed using a powerful transformer-based large language model. We show the new indices track current economic conditions, consistent with a simple conceptual framework we use to explain why there is real-time information in firms' earnings calls. Focusing on firms' price-setting behaviour, the reduced-form associations we estimate appear to show that discussions around final prices have become more sensitive to import cos

Abstract:
In this study, we examine the revenue, costs, profits and technical efficiency of chilli farms in Cambodia. We employ a representative sample of 542 chilli farming households from Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum and Kandal. The sample was randomly selected using a two-stage stratified sampling design, where villages were chosen in the first stage as the primary sampling unit and households engaged in chilli production were selected in the second stage as the secondary sampling units. The selection of primary sampling units was proportional to the numbe

Abstract:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been monitoring the U.S. farm sector's productivity performance since the 1960s. Today, USDA, Economic Research Service (ERS) bases its U.S. agricultural productivity statistics on a sophisticated system of production accounts, drawing data from numerous sources. A notable feature of the U.S. productivity accounts is the input quality adjustment, as some inputs have undergone significant changes in their quality over time. According to USDA, ERS estimates, between 1948 and 2021, total farm output grew by 1.46 percent annually. With total input decl

Abstract:
We evaluate the aggregate and distributional effects of climate change mitigation policies using a multi-sector equilibrium model with intersectoral input-output linkages and worker heterogeneity calibrated to different countries. The introduction of carbon taxes leads to changes in relative prices and inputs reallocation, including labor. For the United States, reaching its original Paris Agreement pledge would imply at most a 0.8% drop in output. This impact is distributed asymmetrically across sectors and individuals. Workers with a comparative advantage in dirty energy sectors who do not r

Abstract:
In village economies, small firm owners facing idiosyncratic shocks adjust production by cutting spending and reducing employment. Households with whom they trade inputs and labor scale back their own businesses and reduce consumption. As effects reverberate through local economies, the aggregate indirect adverse effects are larger than the direct effects. Propagation is more severe when transmitted through labor networks as opposed to material supply-chain networks, and goes beyond input-output/sectoral considerations as it varies with network position, closeness to a shocked household, and n
