The result of research carried out in several European countries, this book analyses the phenomenon of the posting of workers from an international and interdisciplinary perspective, with a particular focus on working conditions, occupational safety and health (OSH), regulatory issues, offences and violations of posted workers’ rights. Abstract:
This chapter examines union strategies towards precarious migrant workers in the UK, France, and Germany. It shows that at a national level, the umbrella labour organizations or confederations—the British Trades Union Congress (TUC), the German Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (DGB), and the French Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT)—have changed their policies over time, becoming more open and welcoming towards migrant workers. However, specific union strategies towards migrant workers differ substantively. Thus, even though the policy framework at a macro level is quite similar across the UK,

Abstract:
Chapter 4 analyses the barriers that prevented informal bus workers from responding collectively to their criminalization and to the economic squeeze by their employers. Reflecting on the sources of workers’ power, the chapter shows how labour oversupply, its fragmentation amongst different ‘classes of labour’ performing different tasks, and geographical dispersion explain workers’ lack of effective collective response to their plight. The chapter also charts the forms and limits of existing workforce solidarity through a longitudinal study of the rise and fall (1998–2005) of a labour associat

Abstract:
This chapter examines the concept of precariousness in work in relation to income and labour market polarization. Although there is growing interest in the separate but related notion of precarity in human geography, economic and labour geographers have engaged less with the literature on precarious work and the decline of the standard employment relation. This chapter provides a brief overview of how precarious employment is understood, before turning to focus on two particular dimensions: the role of labour market intermediaries, and the challenges of regulation in an era of flexible work.

Abstract:
There has been a growing interest in the disciplinary ‘autonomy’ of labour law. The chapters in this book examine the interface between criminal law and theory and the regulation of labour markets, given the importance of this interface in the twenty-first century. The four chapters in the first section of the book are concerned broadly with the normative questions concerning the legitimacy of criminalisation in the regulation of social activity. It is a fundamental feature of liberal theories of criminalisation that the legitimate use of the criminal sanction requires special justification. T

Abstract:
Millions of workers today labor in nontraditional situations involving part-time work, temporary agency employment, and skills underutilization or face the precariousness of long-term unemployment. To date, research has largely focused on how these experiences shape workers' well-being, rather than how hiring agents perceive and treat job applicants who have moved through these positions. Shifting the focus from workers to hiring agents, this book explores how key gatekeepers evaluate workers with nonstandard, mismatched, or precarious employment experience.
