Abstract:

Abstract:
Jail and prison administrators are responsible for ensuring institutional safety and order. Recent estimates indicate violence in correctional institutions is pervasive. One promising approach to reduce institutional violence is using a risk assessment to predict the likelihood of victimization. Once corrections officials identify high victimization risk offenders, these authorities can take steps to triage interventions to mitigate such risks. This strategy, however, requires a classification instrument that is available and predictively valid. In 2014, Labrecque, Smith, and Wooldredge created one such tool—the Inmate Risk Assessment for Violent, Nonsexual Victimization (RVNSV). This study reassesses the predictive validity of the RVNSV on a sample of adult inmates in the United States. The results indicate the RVNSV is a valid predictor of inmate victimization, among males and females.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Aster novi-belgii L. complex is one of the least understood groups of this genus in Quebec. The goal of this study is to better circumscribe the taxa often confused with it (A. puniceus and A. anticostensis), to determine whether species described within the complex are valid (A. "foliaceus", A. johannensis, etc.), and to establish their habitat and distribution. Samples were collected throughout the range of the species in Quebec. Aster novi-belgii var. novi-belgii and A. novi-belgii var. crenifolius individuals are 2n = 6x = 48; a count of 2n = 80 is reported for A. "longifolius''. A morphometric analysis using principal components and discriminant analyses shows that A. novi-belgii is easily distinguished from A. puniceus and A. anticostensis. No segregate species can be recognized within the A. novi-belgii complex. However, at the infraspecific level, two varieties seem recognizable: a coastal, robust morphotype in the Gaspé Peninsula (A. novi-belgii var. crenifolius), and a strongly pubescent form (A. novi-belgii var. villicaulis) on the Saint-Jean and Restigouche rivers. The new combination A. novi-belgii L. var. crenifolius (Fern.) Labrecque & Brouillet is proposed. Keywords: Asteraceae, Aster, biosystematics, Quebec, morphometry.

Abstract:
We have recently shown that stimulation of endothelial cells with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induces dissociation of caveolin-1 from the VEGFR-2 receptor, followed by Src family kinase-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of the protein (Labrecque, L., Royal, I., Surprenant, D. S., Patterson, C., Gingras, D., and Béliveau, R. (2003)Mol. Biol. Cell14, 334–347). In this study, we provide evidence that the VEGF-dependent tyrosine phosphorylation of caveolin-1 induces interaction of the protein with the membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP). This interaction requires the phosphorylation of caveolin-1 on tyrosine 14 by members of the Src family of protein kinases, such as Src and Fyn, because it is completely abolished by expression of a catalytically inactive Src mutant or by site-directed mutagenesis of tyrosine 14 of caveolin-1. Most interestingly, the association of MT1-MMP with phosphorylated caveolin-1 induced the recruitment of Src and a concomitant inhibition of the kinase activity of the enzyme, suggesting that this complex may be involved in the negative regulation of Src activity. The association of MT1-MMP with phosphorylated caveolin-1 occurs in caveolae membranes and involves the cytoplasmic domain of MT1-MMP because it was markedly reduced by mutation of Cys574and Val582residues of the cytoplasmic tail of the enzyme. Most interestingly, the reduction of the interaction between MT1-MMP and caveolin-1 by using these mutants also decreases MT1-MMP-dependent cell locomotion. Overall these results indicate that MT1-MMP associates with tyrosine-phosphorylated caveolin-1 and that this complex may play an important role in MT1-MMP regulation and function.

Abstract:
Administrative Tribunals have jurisdiction to deal with questions of law. In the exercise of such jurisdiction they may sometimes make mistakes in the construction of the statutes, regulations or other instruments. Even in the presence of a privative clause, an inferior tribunal should not be the supreme interpret of the law. It is one of the requirements of the « rule of law » that the Superior Court should have a supervisory « droit de regard ». Traditionally, only errors of law going to jurisdiction were out of the shield of the privative clause ; the Superior Courts used to restrain their intervention only after charactarizing the alleged error as « jurisdictional error of law ». Two difficulties came to arise from the approach about whether there exists an error of jurisdiction or one « merely » of law. Firstly, who can tell whether there is a genuine error of law. Secondly, what criteria transmute in the minds of Superior Court Judges an error into one of jurisdiction. The recent case law convinces us of the necessity of a different approach in order to achieve some clarity in this field of Administrative law. Mr. Justice Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada hints at it in the Nispawin and the New Brunswick Liquor Corporation cases. This approach would put an end to the confusion that still prevail in other Supreme Court cases like Blanco or Labrecque. The distinction between errors of law going to jurisdiction and « merely » errors of law is unrational and so unpracticable that it should be abandoned and replaced by what we suggest in the following lines... Mr. Justice Robert Reid of the Ontario Divisional Court has also expressed the same concern in a remarquable judgment.

Abstract:
8025 Background: The EGFR-TKIs erlotinib and gefitinib produce dramatic regressions of tumor in ∼ 70% of NSCLC patients with activating mutations in the EGFR-TK domain. After a median time to progression of ∼1 year, most pts have progressive disease. We undertook this study to search for mechanisms of “acquired resistance” to EGFR-TKIs, to determine the spectrum and frequency of secondary EGFR mutations which arose, and to determine the feasibility of rebiopsy in this setting. Methods: All pts had metastatic or recurrent NSCLC and prior treatment with EGFR-TKI and progressive disease while on EGFR-TKI. Pts must also have had an activating EGFR mutation OR radiographic response (RECIST or WHO) to EGFR-TKI OR significant and durable improvement in cancer-related symptoms as judged by patient's physician. Core biopsies were performed and studied for EGFR mutation (exons 18–21 including PCR-based test for T790M) and MET amplification. Results: From 8/04–12/08 98 pts were consented for rebiopsy and 85 underwent the procedure. Demographics Female/Male=59/39; median age 62 (range 28–88); smoking: never=59, former/current=39. Primary EGFR mutation was exon 19 del-39; exon 21 L858R-11, other/WT-28, pending-7. Median time on EGFR-TKI before biopsy was 12 months (7–28 months). Secondary EGFR mutations: T790M-33, other-2, none detected-31, indeterminate-10, pending-9. MET amplification in 2/16 studied to date. Conclusions: 1) Rebiopsy of patients with NSCLC and acquired resistance to EGFR TKIs is feasible and well-received by pts. 2) Knowledge of EGFR genotype including EGFR T790M and MET status can inform clinical trials of targeted therapies in this population 3) More complete annotation of MET status and exploratory analyses of profiles of specimens by metastatic sites and prior EGFR-TKI versus chemo and EGFR-TKI is ongoing. Abstract:
Two Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) successions, Lung Cam in Vietnam, and Lukač in Slovenia, have been sampled for high-resolution magnetic susceptibility, stable isotope and elemental chemistry, and biostratigraphic analyses. These successions are located on the eastern (Lung Cam section) and western margins (Lukač section) of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean during PTB time. Lung Cam, lying along the eastern margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean provides an excellent proxy for correlation back to the GSSP and out to other Paleo-Tethyan successions. This proxy is tested herein by correlating the Lung Cam section in Vietnam to the Lukač section in Slovenia, which was deposited along the western margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean during the PTB interval. It is shown herein that both the Lung Cam and Lukač sections can be correlated and exhibit similar characteristics through the PTB interval. Using time-series analysis of magnetic susceptibility data, high-resolution ages are obtained for both successions, thus allowing relative ages, relative to the PTB age at ~252 Ma, to be assigned. Evaluation of climate variability along the western and eastern margins of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean through the PTB interval, using d18O values indicates generally cooler climate in the west, below the PTB, changing to generally warmer climates above the boundary. A unique Black Carbon layer (elemental carbon present by agglutinated foraminifers in their test) below the boundary exhibits colder temperatures in the eastern and warmer temperatures in the western Paleo-Tethys Ocean.ReferencesBalsam W., Arimoto R., Ji J., Shen Z, 2007.
