Abstract:
The labyrinth screw pump is a new type of low-flow rotor pump with a simple structure and good sealing performance. It is suitable for the transport of high-viscosity, high-gas-content, and particle-containing media. In this study, a rectangular labyrinth screw pump was used as the research object. The effect of the medium viscosity on the performance of the labyrinth pump was studied through numerical simulations, and the correctness of the simulation method was verified using existing test data. The efficiency and head of the labyrinth screw pump were selected as the optimization objectives,

The research is aimed at the development of new scientific principles for the creation of special pumping equipment for the extraction of oil and gas in complicated conditions. In many cases, the complicated operating conditions of the pump are determined by the high gas content and high content of mechanical impurities in the multiphase flow. In the course of scientific research, new methods of designing hydraulic machines were tested, including the use of additive technologies. In the study of labyrinth pumps, the issues were considered concerning the features of the operating process with i

In this study, fluid viscosity effects on LSP performance in terms of boosting pressure were numerically investigated. A water–glycerin mixture with different concentrations corresponding to varying apparent viscosities was flowed through an in-house manufactured LSP under various flow conditions, e.g., changing flow rates, rotational speeds, and fluid viscosities. The pressure increment between the intake and discharge of the LSP was recorded using the differential pressure transducer. The same pump geometries, fluid properties and flow conditions were incorporated into the numerical configur

Abstract:
By using Prandtl’s mixing length theory to model two-dimensional Reynolds stress equations, the pumping performance of a labyrinth screw pump (LSP) is studied and several key parameters are empirically determined. As a result, two innovative concepts, a cell head coefficient Kf and a pump total head coefficient Kb, are proposed. A simple empirical equation quantifying the effects of the main geometric parameters of the threads on the pump performance is obtained and compared with Golubiev’s experimental results (1965, “Studies on Seal for Rotating Shafts of High-Pressure Pumps,” Wear, 8, pp. 2

Abstract As widely used in onshore and offshore oil production, the electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) suffer from significant performance degradation for producing high-viscosity hydrocarbon fluids. In this paper, a new design of the labyrinth screw pump (LSP) is proposed to facilitate the high-viscosity oil production, which may partially replace the application scenarios of ESPs for heavy oil extraction. Based on the cellular supercharging theory proposed by Golubiev, a prototype of LSP was designed and manufactured, while an experimental facility was built up to test pump's performance at

Abstract Electric submersible pumps (ESPs) are over a century-old technology. As reservoirs mature, water cut increases, motor electric load increases which in turn, increases the required equipment size, mainly the pump and motor lengths. In addition, in alternative ESP deployment methods, length of the ESP is a critical factor during installation and retrieval due to crane limitations especially for offshore. To mitigate the downhole assembly length, a novel motor and pump system is designed. The primary advantage of this design is manifested by the elimination of the protector section that

Helical groove seals are non-contacting annular seals used in pumps between impeller stages and at the balance drum. These seals have helically machined grooves on the surface of the rotor and/or stator. They work to sustain a pressure difference given a mass flow rate of the impeller through two flow phenomena which can be characterized by their flow direction. Fluid flowing axially dissipates kinetic energy through turbulent mixing as fluid is pushed through the jet stream region and mixes in the larger groove region, thus producing a pressure differential.
