Abstract:
The topmost Lancefieldian (La3, earliest Floian, Early Ordovician) Paratetragraptus approximatus Biozone of Victoria contains a previously undocumented graptolite fauna that includes, in addition to the nominative species, Paratetragraptus cooperi sp. nov., P. thomassmithi sp. nov., P. acclinans, P.? henrywilliamsi sp. nov., and Tshallograptus cymulus gen. et sp. nov., interpreted as the direct ancestor of Tshallograptus fruticosus (J. Hall). Taxa such as Kinnegraptus, Laxograptus, Pseudobryograptus, Phyllograptus, Tetragraptus and Loganograptus also make their first appearance in this zone. The succeeding Bendigonian stage, traditionally subdivided into four biozones using overlapping ranges of P. approximatus and the four- and three-stiped morphs of the T. fruticosus clade, is revised to accommodate the earlier than documented appearance of the 3-stiped morph, here renamed Tshallograptus tridens sp. nov., in the Be1 Biozone. The new subdivision consists of three biozones: Be1 P. approximatus + T. fruticosus Biozone, Be2+3 T. fruticosus + T. tridens Biozone, and Be4 T. tridens Biozone. T. tridens is vanishingly rare in Be1 and Be2 but appears in abundance in Be3 which is retained as a local subzone.

Abstract:
AbstractThe principal goal of this study was to assess the responses of broiler chickens raised on floor litter to the 2% dietary level of lactose (LAC) originating from dried whey fed in combination with live culture of Lactobacillus agilis bacteria (90 million cells/kg diet) in terms of the performance and basic postslaughter parameters, the lumen pH in some alimentary tract segments, concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA ) in the total (T) and undissociated (UD) forms and count of selected microbial populations in the caeca determined by fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH). A parallel aim was to evaluate the outcomes from the combined supplementation in comparison with feeding of LAC and the L. agilis bacteria as separate dietary supplements. Six hundred and forty Ross 308 chickens were placed in 16 floor pens (40 birds per pen having equal sex ratio) and were provided with free access to the feed (a mash maize-wheat-soybean meal-based diet) and water. Dietary treatments provided from day 8 to 42 of age were: LAC-free basal diet (CON), LAC-containing diet (CON + LAC), LAC-free diet with the addition of L. agilis (CON + BAC) and LAC-containing diet with addition of L. agilis (CON + LAC + BAC). The LAC supplementation caused significant decreases in the luminal pH of the crop, ileum and caeca, and the addition of the L. agilis bacteria reduced the pH in the crop and caeca. The overall concentration of total (T) volatile fatty acids was higher in the caeca of broilers receiving the LAC-containing diets. Both the LAC and the BAC supplements, independently from one another, resulted in significantly greater caecal levels of UD acetate, propionate and butyrate. The FISH analysis revealed that counts of Bacteroides sp./Prevotella sp. group were higher after the inclusion of LAC in the feed. All three dietary supplementations significantly reduced the total counts of the family Enterobacteriaceae and decreased the number of naturally occurring C. perfringens bacteria compared with the basal control diet (CON). Neither LAC inclusion nor BAC addition to the diet affected the counts of the Clostridium coccoides/Eubacterium rectale group. The synergistic effects of the simultaneous supplementation of LAC and L. agilis were found on the T butyrate concentration and on C. perfringens and the Enterobacteriaceae counts. No improvements in the body weight gains and post-slaughter traits were observed due to uncombined and combined supplementation with 2% LAC and L. agilis, indicating that the shifts in composition of the caecal microbiota toward a healthier composition by using these additives were not large enough to create the positive growth rate and processing yields responses in broilers maintained in a litter-floor environment.

Abstract:
Early mortality syndrome/acute hepatopancreatic necrosis (EMS/AHPND) was first detected in China in 2009. The disease spread rapidly to neighboring countries and emerged in almost major shrimp-producing regions in the world, including Vietnam. The disease has caused serious damage to the global shrimp industry and so far, there is no effective cure. In order to understand the current status of AHPND, and then to introduce effective prevention and detection measures, we collected data and shrimp samples in some provinces in the Mekong Delta to analyze and isolate the pathogenic strains. The results of our study conducted from 2014 - 2018 in four provinces (Ben Tre, Long An, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang) showed that AHPND damaged from 2.0 to 57.2% of the total shrimp farming area. In addition, we isolated 10 AHPND-positive strains via culturing and PCR. The results of representative sequencing of three strains LA1, LA5, and LA8 showed that they were 100% similarity with the previously published strain XN89. These isolated strains are used as a collection for further studies on the origin and mechanism of the disease by whole genome sequencing.

Cross, Cassandra, and Rosalie Gillett. "Exploiting trust for financial gain: an overview of business email compromise (BEC) fraud." Journal of Financial Crime 27, no. 3 (April 22, 2020): 871–84. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/jfc-02-2020-0026.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to explore current knowledge of business email compromise (BEC) fraud, or approaches that specifically target organisations for financial gain, through the exploitation of trusted relationships. BEC fraud affects organisations globally and is estimated to have netted offenders over US$26bn since 2016. Despite the sheer magnitude of these losses, there is a dearth of academic research seeking to better understand this crime type, and prevent it from occurring. Design/methodology/approach This review summarises the known literature on BEC fraud. It uses a variety of academic and industry sources to ascertain the current state of knowledge, including how it is perpetrated, its impact (on businesses and individuals), how law enforcement have responded and its prevention. Findings This review highlights many gaps in knowledge surrounding BEC fraud. There has been a large focus on the technical aspects of BEC fraud, to the detriment of the human elements. Often, BEC fraud is successful through targeted and effective use of social engineering techniques and is able to overcome any technical solutions through the manipulation of personal relationships. Further, while the financial impacts of BEC fraud are obvious, there is no known research which has explored the non-financial harms of BEC fraud (across organisational and individual perspectives). With companies starting to (unsuccessfully) take legal action against those who have responded, there is a clear need to understand how organisations can better respond to incidents when they occur. Finally, there are gaps in knowledge on what is the best combination of both technical and human measures to prevent BEC fraud. Research limitations/implications This review is based on information presently available, and as indicated, there are significant gaps in what is currently known. Practical implications This review highlights the need to undertake research into the current gaps, with a view to improving best practice knowledge on prevention and response. Social implications Currently unknown, BEC fraud is posited to have significant impacts at both personal and collective levels. Increased knowledge of these non-financial impacts will improve how organisations respond to BEC fraud and how employees can be supported before and after an incident occurs. Originality/value Despite the magnitude of the problem, there is limited academic scholarship on BEC fraud. This literature review offers a summary of current knowledge and advocates a strong research agenda moving forward.

Full text
Abstract:
A laboratory scale plasma spout-fluid bed has been developed to calcine concentrated vanadium ore to extract vanadium in the form of sodium metavanadate. A 20-kW d.c. plasma torch was used with argon and nitrogen as the plasma gases. Air, the main fluidizing gas, permitted the fluidization of the vanadium concentrate within the bed and provided the oxygen for the roasting reaction. In addition, air injected tangentially into the spout region lowered the plasma gas temperatures to within the required roasting temperatures.
The bed stability and degree of vanadium recovery were analyzed as a function of bed temperature, time, and concentrate-to-salt ratio. It was shown that heating and reaction in the reactor occur primarily as the particles pass through the plasma spout. If spout temperatures are too high, melting and agglomeration of the particles occurs, leading to defluidization of the bed.
Conversion during batch operation, with sodium carbonate as the salt, was rather unsuccessful due to elutriation of the salt during heat-up. The highest conversions were observed in the fused and agglomerated particles of the bed. Simulated continuous operation of the bed however resulted in significantly higher conversion rates.

Abstract:
Craft villages played a significant role in the development of Vietnam’s rural economy for a long time. The range of products and production methods, including the processing of materials and chemicals, are now adapted to modern market requirements but environmental and labour protection issues are not adequately considered in the management of the craft villages. The reasons are various: poor education of responsible operators, deficient technical equipment or missing regulatory framework and implementation of existing regulations. The INHAND project (Integrated Water Management Concept for Craft Villages) started in 2011 and is studying the food processing village of Dai Lam located on the banks of the Cau River in the Bac Ninh province (about 40 km NE of the capital Hanoi). The household-scale business focus mainly on rice and cassava processing with 200 out of 1000 households producing alcohol from cassava and rice, 10 households producing tofu, and 30 households recycling aluminium. In addition, most households also raise pigs. The wastewater is released mostly untreated into the receiving stream. Within the framework of the INHAND project, four German und two Vietnamese partners will conduct a basic analysis inventory in the village with identification of suitable measure for an integrated, environmentally sound concept for the removal and reuse of all output streams. The second major task of the 3.5 years research project is the conceptualisation, development and implementation of pilot-scale treatment facilities in the village and the scientific monitoring of their planning and operation

Abstract:
Interest in non-traditional fuel sources, carbon dioxide sequestration, and cleaner combustion has brought attention on gasification to supplement fossil fueled energy, particularly by a fluidized bed. Developing tools and methods to predict operation and performance of gasifiers will lead to more efficient gasifier designs. This research investigates bed fluidization and particle decomposition for fluidized materials. Experimental methods were developed to model gravimetric and energetic response of thermally decomposing materials. Gravimetric, heat flow, and specific heat data were obtained from a simultaneous thermogravimetric analyzer (DSC/TGA). A method was developed to combine data in an energy balance and determine an optimized heat of decomposition value. This method was effective for modeling simple reactions but not for complex decomposition. Advanced method was developed to model mass loss using kinetic reactions. Kinetic models were expanded to multiple reactions, and an approach was developed to identify suitable multiple reaction mechanisms. A refinement method for improving the fit of kinetic parameters was developed. Multiple reactions were combined with the energy balance, and heats of decomposition determined for each reaction. From this research, this methodology can be extended to describe more complex thermal decomposition. Effects of particle density and diameter on the minimum fluidization velocity were investigated, and results compared to empirical models. Effects of bed mass on pressure drop through fluidized beds were studied. A method was developed to predict hydrodynamic response of binary beds from the response of each particle type and mass. Resulting pressure drops of binary mixtures resembled behavior superposition for individual particles.

Andrade, Marcus Vinicius Freire. "Influência do tempo de detenção hidráulica e das condições nutricionais na remoção de surfactante aniônico de água residuária de lavanderia e seus efeitos na comunidade microbiana." Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT ) on anionic surfactant; linear alkyl benzene sulphonate (LAS) from laundry wastewater in two fluidized bed reactors (FBR) operated in HRT of 8 hours (FBR1) and 12 hours (FBR2). The reactors were inoculated with activated sludge and the influence of nitrate and ethanol addition on LAS removal was studied with subsequent impact on microbial diversity. The study was conducted in following phases; laundry wastewater characterization, denitrifying degradation potential of LAS, fluidized bed reactor operation under specified conditions, central composite design, and determination of microbial shift between biofilm of FBR1 and FBR2 through Mi-Seq Illumima®. Higher LAS removal (77%) was verified in denitrifying potential degrading of LAS using batch reactors feed with 21 mg LAS /L and 150mg NO3-/L. Great LAS removal efficiency was observed for 436 days, however significant notice was observed for global LAS removal between FBR1 and FBR2, i.e. greater LAS removal in FBR2 (99±3% for 22,5 ±5,9 mg LAS/L) than FBR1 (93 ±12% for 20,6 ±4,4 mg LAS /L). The ethanol addition significantly influenced FBR1 efficiency while nitrate addition improves LAS removal in both reactors. Central composite design resulted into optimal values for LAS removal (94%) in addition to 97,5 mg/L ethanol and 87,5 mg/L nitrate. Microbial shift showed genus abundance related to denitrification and LAS degradation. In Step I denitrifying bacteria Flavobacterium, Shingobium and Xanthobacter were identified. For Steps with laundry wastewater addition, Dechloromonas, Zoogloea, Novosphingobium, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Desulfobulbus, were identified, probably, related to LAS degradation.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the withdrawal or disapplication of Regulation 330/2010. It describes the relevant procedures and the powers of both the European Commission and the national competition authorities in this respect. Non-application occurs by Commission regulation in cases where parallel networks of similar vertical restraints cover more than 50 per cent of the relevant market. Withdrawal occurs by the Commission or an NCA when vertical agreements satisfying the conditions for a BER but nonetheless produce effects on competition that are incompatible with Article 101 TFEU.

Abstract:
This chapter describes corporate governance and disclosure in multinational enterprises (MNEs). Corporate governance is the system of rules and practices by which the corporation is directed and controlled. It is a multifaceted concept, emerging from divergent views over the corporation’s legitimate objectives and complex interactions between corporate behaviour and national cultural and social influences. Accordingly, MNE affiliates will encounter divergent corporate governance principles in their countries of operation. Corporate governance, influenced by economic globalization, appears to be moving towards a rough, and imperfect, consensus based on variants of the ‘enlightened shareholder value’ model. The chapter then focuses on the key issue of how to make the corporation accountable. Adequate corporate disclosure, based on corporate reports and independently audited accounts, remains ‘the bed-rock of company law’. The chapter considers developments in disclosure and accounting requirements, alongside accountability enhancing internal corporate governance structures. It assesses external accountability and oversight, including through regulatory bodies and professional standard setting agencies, as well as disclosure and accounting practices.

Abstract:
Abstract The economic and environmental sustainability of the Bitumen Stabilized Ballast (BSB) as construction and maintenance practice in railway track-bed is evaluated in comparison to the traditional ballast (TB). This aim is achieved integrating the results of an attributional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), following a cradle-to-grave approach, and the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analyses. The higher durability of BSB leads to arise environmental benefits in almost all the impact categories of LCA. Nevertheless, Bitumen Emulsion (BE) originates high level of impact on certain categories and they cannot be compensated by the reduction of the minor and major maintenance activities required by the BSB solution over the life cycle. The results of the LCA have been implemented in the LCC model for accounting the external costs due to the environmental impacts. From this analysis it emerges that the BSB technology, used since the construction stage and during the routine tamping, can provide economical savings.

Abstract:
This note brings together lessons from the IDBs and other institutions efforts to adapt a skills taxonomy for Latin America and the Caribbean countries. These efforts have focused primarily on the ability to gather and make use of labor market information on skills demand from non-traditional data sources like online job vacancies. Most of these efforts have used the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) taxonomy to underpin the identification and classification of skills. This note is intended to be a starting point and set of considerations for policymakers who may be considering, or already embarking on, similar efforts to use ESCO or other taxonomical structures to help better analyze, understand and use skills-level information for decision making. It also seeks to motivate the need for additional classification systems that help governments take stock of its citizens skills in increasingly complex and rapidly changing labor markets.

Ashley, Caitlyn, Elizabeth Spencer Berthiaume, Philip Berzin, Rikki Blassingame, Stephanie Bradley Fryer, John Cox, E. Samuel Crecelius, et al. Law and Policy Resource Guide: A Survey of Eminent Domain Law in Texas and the Nation. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.eminentdomainguide.

Full text
Abstract:
Eminent Domain is the power of the government or quasi-government entities to take private or public property interests through condemnation. Eminent Domain has been a significant issue since 1879 when, in the case of Boom Company v. Patterson, the Supreme Court first acknowledged that the power of eminent domain may be delegated by state legislatures to agencies and non-governmental entities. Thus, the era of legal takings began. Though an important legal dispute then, more recently eminent domain has blossomed into an enduring contentious social and political problem throughout the United States. The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Thus, in the wake of the now infamous decision in Kelo v. City of New London, where the Court upheld the taking of private property for purely economic benefit as a “public use,” the requirement of “just compensation” stands as the primary defender of constitutionally protected liberty under the federal constitution. In response to Kelo, many state legislatures passed a variety of eminent domain reforms specifically tailoring what qualifies as a public use and how just compensation should be calculated. Texas landowners recognize that the state’s population is growing at a rapid pace. There is an increasing need for more land and resources such as energy and transportation. But, private property rights are equally important, especially in Texas, and must be protected as well. Eminent domain and the condemnation process is not a willing buyer and willing seller transition; it is a legally forced sale. Therefore, it is necessary to consider further improvements to the laws that govern the use of eminent domain so Texas landowners can have more assurance that this process is fair and respectful of their private property rights when they are forced to relinquish their land. This report compiles statutes and information from the other forty-nine states to illustrate how they address key eminent domain issues. Further, this report endeavors to provide a neutral third voice in Texas to strike a more appropriate balance between individual’s property rights and the need for increased economic development. This report breaks down eminent domain into seven major topics that, in addition to Texas, seemed to be similar in many of the other states. These categories are: (1) Awarding of Attorneys’ Fee; (2) Compensation and Valuation; (3) Procedure Prior to Suit; (4) Condemnation Procedure; (5) What Cannot be Condemned; (6) Public Use & Authority to Condemn; and (7) Abandonment. In analyzing these seven categories, this report does not seek to advance a particular interest but only to provide information on how Texas law differs from other states. This report lays out trends seen across other states that are either similar or dissimilar to Texas, and additionally, discusses interesting and unique laws employed by other states that may be of interest to Texas policy makers. Our research found three dominant categories which tend to be major issues across the country: (1) the awarding of attorneys’ fees; (2) the valuation and measurement of just compensation; and (3) procedure prior to suit.
