Shellac and aleuritic acid manufacturing industries generate a lot of alkaline aqueous effluent during the process of manufacture of shellac and aleuritic acid from the seedlac/sticklac. The generated effluent contains lac resin, lac wax, lac dye and other water-soluble organic acids. Shellac industries in India face problems with the disposal of aqueous effluent due to the presence of considerable amounts of natural organic molecules and the dark colour solution. To address these problems, we have developed a novel method for the selective recovery of the lac resin from the alkaline aqueous e

The Indian lac insect Kerria lacca (Coccoidea: Tachardiidae) is a beneficial insect, exploited commercially for lac, from which economically important resin, dye and wax are obtained. Natural infestations of this species have been recorded on two hitherto unreported host plants, Acacia tortilis (Forsskal) Hayne and Calliandra surinamensis Benth. Both species belong to Fabaceae, the family which comprises of about one-thirds of reported lac host species. Fairly large populations of the lac insects of good density have been observed on these hosts, indicative of good survival of the lac insect.

Abstract:
The forest of Santhal Parganas (Jharkhand) is rich in the diversity of flora. Its extant flora affords the basic needs of the tribals living amidst the forest for centuries. The tribals put the forest flora and its parts/ products in their diverse domestic uses as food, fuel, fodder, fibre, bamboowares, timber, medicine, oil, fish poison, etc., and also they sell these things to earn money. To sustain both the surviving forest as well as the tribals dwelling therein, it is imperative to stop deforestation, set up/encourage forest-based labour intensive works (sabai grass-based rope making indu

Jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) is grown in the tropics. It is next only to cotton in importance as a fibre crop. Adequate supplies of plant nutrients, especially N, are essential for its vegetative growth. Response to applied N varies from region to region. In a light-textured soil with low cation exchange capacity (CEC), part of the applied N is generally lost mostly under rainfall (Engelsted & Russel, 1975) and the rest is manifested in the form of residual effect (McEwen, 1970). Such losses can be reduced by using slow-release N fertilizers or by coating the urea granules by paraffin wa

AbstractA novel lignin-based slow release fertilizer with low environmental impact has been developed. More precisely, a granulated simple superphosphate fertilizer, consisting of calcium phosphate monobasic [Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O] and gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) was coated with modified kraft lignins and the diffusion of phosphorus was observed as a function of time. The lignin was hydroxymethylated with formaldehyde and subsequently cross-linked with phenol-formaldehyde resin resulting in HML-PF as coating. Moreover, coating films were prepared from a mixture of acetylated lignin (Lac) and acetylated cellu

The present work reports the identification of inorganic and organic materials applied in gildings of Kizil Grottoes mural paintings, located in the western part of China. A total of 10 gold gilding samples were collected from caves dated in the fourth–seventh century AD. In this research, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV fluorescence microscopy, and pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analyses were carried out to clarify the mordant materials and the coating materials on the foils. Dimensional stability proves to be an important factor affecting the quality of wooden products. As a sort of crude and thermoplastic resin, shellac excreted by lac insects demonstrates water-repellent and environmental-friendly features. The research impregnated shellac with wood at room temperature and with a vacuum-pressure procedure. Efforts were made to examine how shellac treatment affected the dimensional stability, moisture absorption, chemical structure, thermostability, as well as morphological characteristics of wood. Ionic liquids, i.e. organic molten salts composed of cations and anions with melting points below 100°C, have unique properties such as high ionic conductivity, high thermal stability, low vapor pressure, low flammability, and so on. Among the numerous ionic liquids, considerable ionic liquids based on carboxylate anions have been reported1). On the other hand, several published papers reported ionic liquids based on quaternary phosphonium cations, demonstrating relatively high transport properties and thermal stability2,3).
