Abstract:
In a previous life I was a yuppie. Double breasted suit, briefcase and a state-of-the-art-library with views across the harbour from the top floor of a glass tower in downtown Auckland. I worked hard and played even harder. My time was charged in ten minute units and I can still remember the middle initial of every partner in the firm. So how on earth did I end up trading my well polished lace-ups for flip flops and the beloved kiwi Sauvignon Blanc for a dirty brown liquid called kava?

Climate is the principal driving force of hydrological extremes like floods and attributing generating mechanisms is an essential prerequisite for understanding past, present, and future flood variability. Successively enhanced radiative forcing under global warming enhances atmospheric water-holding capacity and is expected to increase the likelihood of strong floods. In addition, natural climate variability affects the frequency and magnitude of these events on annual to millennial time-scales. Following deglaciation, Canadian coastlines, particularly those around Hudson and James Bay region were affected by large crustal rebound and associated sea level change, the largest glacio-isostatic recovery process known during the Holocene. Recent archaeological work in the uplifting eastern James Bay region found unusual occupation and settlement patterns for early indigenous communities which seem to have been related to changes in the coastal landscape. The meteorite impact that formed the 32-km-wide Upper Pennsylvanian (285 ± 23 Ma) West Clearwater structure, situated about 125 km east of the Hudson Bay arc, northern Quebec, formed a sheet of impact melt now exposed on a central ring of islands. Crater-fill deposits exposed on the ring of islands can be divided into three major successive units, which are, in ascending order: 1) a red, friable impact-melt-bearing fragmental breccia 0 to 20 m thick cut by small (cm to dm) dykes of impact melt; 2) a red, massive, clast-rich impact-generated melt about 18 meters thick containing up to 25% clas

Abstract- Lake Matano of Indonesia, the 8th deepest lake on Earth, is an Fe-rich (ferruginous) end-member aquatic ecosystem and is the best known modern analogue for the ecology of Earth's earliest oceans. A culmination of geological, climatic and biological processes has resulted in an Fe-centric aquatic ecosystem in which anaerobic microbial communities are largely sustained by cycling Fe and CH4. Fe-rich soils of the catchment basin supply an abundance of Fe (hydr)oxides to Lake Matano's sediments. Limited vertical mixing in Lake Matano has generated a persistent, 100 m deep pycnocline whic
