Abstract:
The characters in Plato's Socratic Dialogues and the sociocultural beliefs and assumptions they present have a historical dramatic setting which ranges over the last quarter of the fifth century b.c.—the period of activity of the historical Socrates. That this context is to an extent fictional is undeniable; yet this leaves open the question what the dramatic interplay of (mostly) dead politicians, sophists, and other Socratic associates—not forgetting Socrates himself—signifies for the overall meaning and purpose of individual Dialogues. Are we to assume, with a recent study, that Plato is entirely concerned with his contemporary world and is, as it were, borrowing his characters from the fifth century, or does the fiction reveal something of his real involvement in the values and debates of the recent past? The aim of this paper is to argue that a detailed study of the characterization and dramatic structure of one particular Dialogue, Laches, strongly suggests that Plato is using a perceived tension between past and present to generate not only a philosophical argument but also a commentary on the cultural and political world of late fifth-century Athens and in particular Socrates’ position within it.

Abstract:
Abstract The following article provides an interpretation of the structure of courage in Plato’s Laches, Meno and Protagoras. I argue that these dialogues present courage (ἀνδρεία) in the soul according to the same scheme: that there is a normatively neutral psychic state which is informed by the knowledge of good and evil. The knowledge (ἐπιστήμη) which informs this normatively neutral psychic state is called practical wisdom (which Plato refers to as φρόνησις or sometimes σοφία). This interpretation seems to negate the claim that virtue is knowledge. I will show, however, that this is not a contradiction and that virtue is in fact knowledge, despite the complex moral psychology of courage. Finally, I will argue that the conception of courage in the Republic addresses some of the problems posed by the discussion of courage in the above-mentioned dialogues.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper offers a new reading of Plato’s Laches that examines the dialogue’s philosophical approach not only to courage but also to two literary texts that both formed and questioned traditional Athenian views of it: Homer and Thucydides. In the middle of Plato’s Laches, the eponymous character claims that the courageous man “should be willing to stay in formation, to defend himself against the enemy, and to refuse to run away.” Socrates responds by wondering whether a man can be courageous in retreat. He cites Homer’s description of Aeneas’ horses that “know how to pursue and flee quickly this way and that” (191b), a quotation that appears twice in the Iliad: once at 5.222-3 when Aeneas refuses to retreat from the rampaging Diomedes and again at 8.106-8 when Diomedes retreats from Hector, despite their belief that to do so is cowardly. On the surface, it seems that the contexts of the Homeric line do not match Socrates’ argument. This paper will argue that Socrates’ apparent ‘miscue’ is both intentional and purposeful because it signals a correspondence between the Homeric scenes and Thucydides’ narrative of the Battle of Mantinea that invites criticism of Homer’s place in the value systems of contemporary Athens. Plato signals a philosophical reading of Homer’s Iliad and of Thucydides’ description of the Battle of Mantinea, through which we are invited to evaluate not only the traditional model of Athenian education, embodied by the former, but also its application in fifth-century Athens, as revealed by the latter. This paper, therefore, demonstrates that the philosophical and literary strategies behind Plato’s decision to ‘misuse’ Homer reveal a disjunction between wisdom and manliness in the Athenian cultural tradition that philosophy aims to resolve.

Abstract:
AbstractWhat is philosophy? How is it possible? This essay constitutes an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of what might be a good answer to either of these questions by reflecting on one particular characteristic of philosophy, specifically as it presents itself in the philosophical practice of Socrates, Plato and Wittgenstein. Throughout this essay, I conduct the systematic discussion of my topic in parallel lines with the historico-methodological comparison of my three main authors. First, I describe a certain neglected aspect of the Socratic method. Then, exploring the flipside of this aspect, I show that despite the fact that both Socrates and Wittgenstein understand their philosophical approaches as being essentially directed at the particular problems and modes of understanding that are unique to single individuals, they nevertheless aspire to philosophical understanding of the more ‘mundane’ kind that is directed at the world. Finally, interpreting parts of Plato's dialogues Phaedrus and Laches, I further develop my case for seeing the role of mutual understanding in philosophy as fundamentally twofold, being directed both at the individual and what they say (the word), and at things that are ‘external’ to this human relation at any particular moment of philosophical understanding (the world).

Abstract:
Territorial marketing is a strategic tool, increasingly incorporated into territorial management policy. This study aims to promote the territory of Alcoutim, taking into account its potential, namely the Guadiana River, through the development of a territorial marketing plan. It aims to reinforce the attractiveness of this territory and accentuate its differentiating factors, thereby aiming to increase its competitiveness and its levels of development. The municipality of Alcoutim, a space with markedly rural characteristics, has the particularity of being located in a coastal / inland transition range, presenting high landscape diversity, where the Guadiana river is a socio-economic and territorial potential. Besides the theoretical approach of territorial marketing and branding and the way they contribute to the development of territories, the strategy for Alcoutim is presented as an example of the applicability of territorial marketing in a territory with markedly rural characteristics, in Portugal. Taking into account the objectives of the study, it will understand what are the main defining characteristics and the potential of the territory in question. It is intended to deepen the knowledge of Alcoutim and its connection to the Guadiana River, recreating the Alcoutim brand, as well as to explore the potential of the village, making it a more attractive place for tourists, residents and investors alike.

Abstract:
Distinguishes between Plato’s conceptions of education, knowledge, and truth from those more familiar in contemporary philosophy. Specifically, argues that knowledge is not a species of true belief, for Plato. Plato’s basic conception of truth is different from ours, and thus cannot really be compared to the role of truth in contemporary epistemology. Nor is knowledge any kind of belief, for Plato. Instead of being some kind of propositional attitude, as we think belief is, Plato compares and contrasts different epistemic powers (or capacities). Finally, because knowledge, for Plato, is a natural cognitive power, it is not the sort of thing that can be put into a soul that lacks that natural power. Education, thus, does not instill knowledge into the student, but takes this natural capacity and strengthens and develops it. Provides a precis of the main arguments of the book, and introduces the role of forms as exemplars.

Abstract:
This chapter details Alcibiades' entry into politics. The first mention of Alcibiades in Thucydides' work refers to the year 420 BCE. Thucydides' introduction lacks the personal charm found in Plato, but it goes straight to the heart of the man's character. The juxtaposition of contrasting motives—the future of Athens versus the promotion of self-interest—is found throughout the work of Thucydides whenever Alcibiades is involved: in the Sicilian expedition and later during the action in Asia Minor. Once the subject of politics was brought up, all the flaws and insults were erased as compared with the ambition that would lead Alcibiades to the pinnacle of success and the depths of disaster. Alcibiades intended to become general, and without delay. In fact, he was elected in the same year, 420 BCE. The chapter also describes the Peloponnesian War, which provided Alcibiades an opportunity to make his name and he did not let the opportunity escape him. However, the war was more than an occasion of brilliant conduct for a young man like Alcibiades; it led him to make some critical decisions about the conduct of his affairs. The chapter then considers the Argive alliance.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Geoheritage documentation is critical for the academic community, and thus incurs an expense to the general public, who may or may not feel the need to fund such an “academic” database. Fortunately, this documentation helps foster appreciation of geosites within a geotouristic framework and can inspire a nationalistic sense of pride, thus bringing about an economic incentive to countries actively involved in geoheritage research and documentation. Yet there remains a prejudice within academia that geoheritage is a descriptive field, is arbitrarily qualitative, and lacks the capacity to create new and important scientific discoveries. We present herein a description and discussion of the results of applying “cutting-edge” science in a geoheritage framework with ample examples from Greece and two case studies of its application. The first of these is The Aliakmon Legacy Project of Northern Greece that necessitated modern documentation to preserve its heritage base when plate tectonic global geoheritage localities were flooded. The second summarizes the geologic history of the Meteora World Heritage Site with an emphasis on how its long complex geologic history ultimately resulted in the Byzantine Monastic community. We propose this paper as a discussion model for the integration of primary geologic research with cultural heritage localities and emphasize that these promise to elevate geoheritage studies to a scale critical for documentation of human civilization itself. It is our opinion that geoheritage is capable of becoming a dynamic field of study in which documentation and preservation expands to integrate renewed multidisciplinary research that in turn comprises the scientific foundation of a “new” cutting-edge geologic field of study.

Abstract:
Contemporary plate rolling mills and pinch pass mills, which are unstable during the rolling process, are all statically indeterminate structures influenced by micro-scale parameters. The micro-scale parameters include bending deformations of the rolls and the side clearances between the chocks and the side surfaces of the housing window. All these are less than 1 mm, and they have an important effect on the skeletal structure of the roll systems of the mill. If the influence of micro-scale parameters is not considered in the design of the rolling mill, the skeletal structure of the roll system is incomplete and lacks kinematic links and pairs. The statically indeterminate nature of traditional rolling mills results in numerous disadvantages, including the frequent burning loss of the end-thrust bearing caused by excessive axial forces, the lateral movement of the strip owing to the deviation of the rolling load acting on the both ends of backup roll, the short service life of the four-row radial roller bearings on the back-up roll, and the quality of product tends to deteriorate due to the unstable operation of the control system, to mention a few. Because of the flattening effect between the rolls, the setting of the offset distance does not achieve the desired purpose and leads to the deviation of rolling load due to the asymmetric cross between the roll axes. To alleviate the above shortcomings, a new type of rolling mill with a statically determinate structure in which the horizontal offset distance between the roll axes is set to zero is thus proposed. In order to keep the rolls parallel and prevent cross between the rolls, a thrust device is designed, which also ensures sufficient free space to allow convenient roll replacement and allow for the thermal expansion of the chocks. In addition, back-up roll systems with component force bases as well as intermediate roll systems are designed in accordance with the theory of statically determinate characteristics with micro-scale parameters.

Abstract:
Many structural damage detection methods utilize piezoelectric sensors. While these sensors are efficient in supporting many structural health monitoring (SHM) methodologies, there are a few key disadvantages limiting their use. The disadvantages include the brittle nature of piezoceramics and their dependence of diagnostic results on the quality of the adhesive used in bonding the sensors. One viable alternative is the utilization of Magneto-Elastic Active Sensors (MEAS). Instead of mechanically creating elastic waves, MEAS induce eddy currents in the host structure which, along with an applied magnetic field, generate mechanical waves via the Lorentz force interaction. Since elastic waves are generated electromagnetically, MEAS do not require direct bonding to the host structure and its elements are not as fragile as PWAS. This work explores the capability of MEAS to detect damage in aluminum alloy. In particular, methodologies of detecting fatigue cracks in thin plates were explored. Specimens consisted of two identical aluminum plates featuring a machined slot to create a stress riser for crack formation. One specimen was subjected to cyclic fatigue load. MEAS were used to transmit elastic waves of different characteristics in order to explore several SHM methodologies. Experiments have shown that the introduction of fatigue cracks created measurable amplitude changes in the waves passing through the fatigued region of the aluminum plate. The phase indicated sensitivity to load conditions, but manifestation in the cracked region lacked stability. Nonlinear effects were studied using plate thickness resonance, which revealed birefringence due to local stresses at the site of the fatigue crack. The resonance spectrum has also shown a frequency decrease apparently due to stiffness loss. Preliminary results suggest opportunities for fatigue damage detection using MEAS. Application of MEAS for the diagnosis of complex structures is currently being investigated.

Abstract:
RE-SC-LUK obtained from recomoinant b. con Bacteria showed a molecular mass similar to that of recombinant two-chain LUK (RE-TC-LUK) as judged from SDS-PAGE. By “Western“ blot analysis immunoreactivity of RE-SC-LUK was observed with monoclonal antibodies directed against the B chain but not with those against the A1 chain of urokinase. N-terminal sequence analysis c RE-SC-LUK showed identity to the A, chain of RE-TC_LUK and provided evidence for its single-chain nature, i.e. integrity of the Lys-Ile bond which is split in TC-UK. In all other respects structural identity of RE-SC-LUK and RE-TC-LUK was demonstrated by fingerprinting of fragments. Similar to recombinant pro-urokinase (RE-SCU-PA), RE-SC-LUK exhibits only marginal amidolytic activity, which is greatly enhanced by treatment with plasmin, but considerable fibrinolytic activity in a fibrin agar plate test. Thus, RE-SC-LUK is characterized as a fragment (residues 136 -411) of RE-SCU-PA, which lacks the “growth factor” and “kringle” domains. Moreover further evidence is provided that a free N-terminus of the B chain is essential for amidolytic but not for fibrinolytic activity of urokinase in more complex systems.
