Full textData is on the heart of the digital transformation. The consequence is anacceleration of the information system evolution , which must adapt. The Big data phenomenonplays the role of catalyst of this evolution.Under its influence appears a new component of the information system: the data lake.Far from replacing the decision support systems that make up the information system, data lakes comecomplete information systems’s architecture.First, we focus on the factors that influence the evolution of information systemssuch as new software and middleware, new infrastructure technologies, but also the decision support system usage itself.Under the big data influence we study the impact that this entails especially with the appearance ofnew technologies such as Apache Hadoop as well as the current limits of the decision support system .The limits encountered by the current decision support system force a change to the information system which mustadapt and that gives birth to a new component: the data lake.In a second time we study in detail this new component, formalize our definition, giveour point of view on its positioning in the information system as well as with regard to the decision support system .In addition, we highlight a factor influencing the architecture of data lakes: data gravity, doing an analogy with the law of gravity and focusing on the factors that mayinfluence the data-processing relationship. We highlight, through a use case, that takingaccount of the data gravity can influence the design of a data lake.We complete this work by adapting the software product line approach to boot a methodof formalizations and modeling of data lakes. This method allows us:- to establish a minimum list of components to be put in place to operate a data lake without transforming it into a data swamp,- to evaluate the maturity of an existing data lake,- to quickly diagnose the missing components of an existing data lake that would have become a dataswamp- to conceptualize the creation of data lakes by being "software agnostic “

Full textThe digital world with constantly evolution gives rise to the precious concept , "data" that is known as the black gold. In accordance with this evolution, database management systems, which play an important role in data valuation, are becoming an essential element of information systems and decision- making processes. With respect to the digital revolution, data is generated every second in a huge volume, by multiple sources and with different formats.Despite the fact that managing large and dispersed data is a problematic issue , we could not neglect the precious value that could potentially be gained through raw data exploration. This heterogeneity translates into the need for an integrated system to efficiently store, process and analyze the huge amount of scattered data. The phenomenon of huge data, known as big data, requires a decision-making system with an appropriate architecture that stores the heterogeneous data and supports the main characteristics of the big data environment, such as the data volume, the veracity, velocity and veracity. The data lake, which is a centralized storage system, is a good answer to these arising problems to receive raw data on a large scale in their native formats. Concerning this goal, it is clear that the infrastructure and architecture of the data lake have a significant impact on the profitability and functionality of the overall system. In this regard, the design and management of the data lake structure requires practical and innovative methods in order to achieve an integrated and optimal centralized repository. By considering the systematic structure of the data lake as well as the hierarchical architecture of the systems, a logistical vision could lead us to the defined objectives. The supply chain is a good example of logistics systems where hierarchical participants are coordi- nated within an integrated network in order to prepare a product or render services to targeted consumers. The logistics structure as well as the supply chain management strategies could be an innovative source of inspiration to design, manage and optimize a data management system based on a logistics vision. For this reason, the implementation of the analog method between systematic structures clarifies to what extent one could take advantage of management strategies derived from the supply chain to develop the architecture and performance of the data lake.In this thesis, we hypothesize that it is possible to describe a data lake and its functionality by comparing it to the logistical structure of a supply chain. On the basis of these objectives:First, we are interested in relying on several data lake architectures and verifying the effectiveness of these architectures on the performance of the data lake, in particular in relation to data governance and the quality of services. In a second step, we introduce the supply chain, supply chain management and the methods that are used frequently to optimize the supply chain. Furthermore we compare all the elements of this data lake logistics system and focus on their similar points in order to use the data lake supply chain management methods.Thirdly, we propose a new architecture for data lake based on supply chain definition thanks to the evolutionary process of modeling the structures of data lakes. We finish this work by optimizing the proposed data lake architecture with supply chain network design strategies and propose the methods to solve the defined mathematical optimization model

Full textHydroelectric reservoirs around the world are managed using hydrological models to calculate water inflows and outflows. Evaporation on these reservoirs is typically neglected or calculated in the same way as evapotranspiration over the entire watershed, although the processes governing the two phenomena are different. A better quantification of evaporation is of growing interest in Quebec and internationally due to climate change, which is causing an increase in water losses by evaporation on reservoirs. This study therefore examines various evaporation models for open water bodies, taking into account the practical context in which hydrological models are generally operated, that is with low availability of input data. The study focuses mainly on two reservoirs with contrasting morphometries and located in the Canadian boreal zone, Eastmain-1 and Romaine-2. For this purpose, a set of observed evaporation data obtained using a direct measurement technique called eddy covariance, is used as a reference. Of all the approaches considered, the mass transfer model with a constant Dalton number of 1.2 x 10⁻³ gives the most accurate estimation of evaporation at hourly time steps. Daily totals are also estimated with good accuracy both during the warming of the water body in spring and during the energy release period in fall. Sensitivity analysis show that the use of this model with limited data is possible, at least for the two reservoirs studied. These limited data consist of air temperature and relative humidity taken on land in the vicinity of the reservoir, water surface temperature measured in situ, and wind speed at a height of 10 m taken from the bank of the reservoir facing the prevailing winds. The application of the model on Lake Leman, located in a more temperate region, also gives good results.

Full textIn the Big Data era, companies are moving away from traditional data-warehouse solutions whereby expensive and timeconsumingETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes are used, towards data lakes in order to manage their increasinglygrowing data. Yet the stored knowledge in companies’ databases, even though in the constructed data lakes, can never becomplete and up-to-date, because of the continuous production of data. Local data sources often need to be augmentedand enriched with information coming from external data sources. Unfortunately, the data enrichment process is one of themanual labors undertaken by experts who enrich data by adding information based on their expertise or select relevantdata sources to complete missing information. Such work can be tedious, expensive and time-consuming, making itvery promising for automation. We present in this work an active user-centric data integration approach to automaticallyenrich local data sources, in which the missing information is leveraged on the fly from web sources using data services.Accordingly, our approach enables users to query for information about concepts that are not defined in the data sourceschema. In doing so, we take into consideration a set of user preferences such as the cost threshold and the responsetime necessary to compute the desired answers, while ensuring a good quality of the obtained results

Full textThe impact of regulation on the behavior of firms is a subject of constant debate between more or less need for public intervention in the decision process of firms. In this thesis, I investigate the direct effect on targeted firms and the indirect effect on peer firms of law enforcement using the cases enforced between 1978 and 2015 under Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the U.S. Anti-Bribery law, as a framework. I firstly review the literature on earnings management, and more specifically on accrual-based models, to analyze the efficiency of accrual-based models to capture changes in regulation. In a second paper, I investigate with my co-author the accrual quality of bribe-paying firms and their competitors and find a positive effect of law enforcement on the accrual quality of bribe-paying firms’ competitors, but not the bribe-paying firms. Our results suggest a positive impact of antibribery law enforcement that incentivizes other firms to enhance their accounting information once they acknowledge a bribing behavior of a peer following the information risk channel. In a third paper, I focus on the indirect effect of law enforcement on peer firms and investigate the real economic effects of anti-bribery enforcement on the level of investment of peers. I find that peer firms decrease the level of their investment once they acknowledge the opening of a FCPA investigation in their industry. More surprisingly, I find a weakening in the decrease of investment for the cases acknowledged after December 2004, when the prosecutor used for the first time alternative resolution vehicles to conclude a FCPA case. These results suggest that, beyond the impact of law enforcement itself, the prosecution mode also affects the behavior of peer firms. In sum, this thesis shows that anti-bribery law enforcement can have a deterrent effect that impacts peer firms, who tend to adapt their behavior in response to a regulatory stimulus
