Abstract:
This aim of this study was to evaluate the lignification in young stems of the Lophanthera lactescens Ducke plant grown in vitro L. lactescens (Malpighiaceae), a species endemic in the Brazilian Amazon that possesses both medicinal properties and could be used in the forest product industry. Plants grown in vitro condition in MS medium were analyzed using Infrared (IR) microspectroscopy in a diffuse reflectance mode, fluorescence microscopy. Moreover, histochemical tests such as the Wiesner and Maüle test were run to monitor the process of lignification in cell walls. The spectra of IR microscopy recorded using cross section tissue are representative of guaiacyl/syringyl lignin, based on the 1336 and 1246 cm-1 signal. Individuals presenting stem sprains, resulting from the marked development, produced gelatinous fibers with a clear cellulose layer. Initially, fluorescence microscopy demonstrated lignin deposition in the cell corner region having progressive deposition in the secondary wall of tracheary elements of the stem.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Measurements of CO2 and water vapor flux using eddy covariance are being made from a 40 m tower located in a transitional tropical forest near Sinop Mato Grosso. As complementary information to this study, the photosynthetic light response curves of three species located near the tower were measured at different heights in the forest canopy and light conditions with the objective of understanding seasonal and spatial (height in the forest canopy and gap or shade located plants) trends in the photosynthetic light response. The measurements were made in a canopy emergent tree (30 m tall) identified as Brosimum lactescens, and in two relatively short plants (0.6 to 1.6 m height) identified as Quiina pteridophylla and Diniszia excelsa located in different light condition. Measurements were made from the end of 2000 dry season to January 2002. These data suggest that species response to seasonal variations in rainfall are variable. In addition, shade plants have a higher quantum yield (A) and a lower estimated gross photosynthesis at saturating (photosynthetic active radiation - PAR) (Amax) than gap plants, presumably because shade plants are adapted to lower average light levels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractPrimates are important seed dispersers in natural ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, but the latter scenario remains under-studied. The degree to which primates favour plant regeneration greatly depends on post-dispersal processes. The main objective of this study was to compare patterns of seed/seedling fate and seedling recruitment in two habitats of the black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra Lawrence 1933), rustic cocoa and rain forest, and two types of seed-deposition locations, monkey latrines and control locations. Field experiments were carried out within the non-overlapping home ranges of six monkey groups, three in cocoa and three in forest. Seed and seedling fates were assessed for one focal tree species, Brosimum lactescens. The probabilities of seed survival (0.52), germination (0.72), seedling establishment (0.73) and early seedling survival (0.38) were not affected by habitat or seed-deposition location. Late seedling survival was similar in the two habitats but was higher in control locations (0.22) than in latrines (0.09). In cocoa, 4641 seedlings of 59 species were recorded, in forest 3280 seedlings of 68 species. Seedling recruitment was similar in both habitats, but latrines had higher densities than control locations. The importance of agro-ecosystems with low management intensity for the maintenance of ecological processes in anthropogenic landscapes is discussed.

"Cinamomo" (Meliaceae), Lophantera lactescens Ducke, "lanterneira" (Malpighiaceae), Pinus elliottii Engelm.

Abstract:
In tropical moist forests, length of the dry period may have a profound influence on leaf dynamics, plant growth and survival. To evaluate the role of light and water availability on seedling performance, a 1-y experiment was carried out in a tropical moist forest in the Bolivian Amazon in which seedlings of three tree species (Brosimum lactescens, Cedrela odorata and Schizolobium amazonicum) were planted in gaps and the understorey. Variation in length of the dry period was simulated by subjecting part of the seedlings to a water treatment at the end of the dry period. Gaps and understorey had a similar soil moisture content, which varied between 39% in the wet season and 16% in the dry season. Height and leaf growth rates were higher in gap compared to understorey plants, and in the wet compared to the dry season. A high growth during the wet season provided gap plants with a decisive size advantage over understorey plants during the dry season. Their larger root system allowed gap plants to explore a larger surface area and deeper soil layers for water. Consequently, gap plants of Cedrela experienced a shorter deciduous period (22 d) compared to understorey plants (61 d). Watering at the end of the dry season cued the flushing of new leaves by Cedrela, although it did not lead to a higher plant growth.

Abstract:
The photosynthetic light response of Amazonian semi-deciduous forest trees of the rain forest–savanna transition near Sinop Mato Grosso, Brazil was measured between July 2000 and September 2003 to test the hypothesis that the photosynthetic capacity of trees acclimated to different growth light environments will decline during the dry season. Maximum photosynthesis (Amax) and stomatal conductance (gmax) were significantly higher during the wet season; however, the physiological response to drought was not a clear function of growth light environment. For some species, such as Psychotria sp. growing in the mid-canopy, internal leaf CO2 concentration (Ci) was >30% lower during the dry season suggesting that declines in Amax were caused in part by stomatal limitations to CO2 diffusion. For other species, such as Brosimum lactescens growing at the top of the canopy, Tovomita schomburgkii growing in the mid-canopy, and Dinizia excelsa growing in the understorey, dry season Ci declined by <20% suggesting that factors independent of CO2 diffusion were more important in limiting Amax. Dry-season declines in gmax appeared to be important for maintaining a more consistent leaf water potential for some species (T. schomburgkii and D. excelsa) but not others (Psychotria sp.). These results indicate that while seasonal drought exerts an important limitation on the physiological capacity of semi-deciduous Amazonian forest trees, the mechanism of this limitation may differ between species.

Abstract:
A espécie P. sagotianum tanto no período seco quanto no chuvoso apresentou maior resistência à decomposição.

Abstract:
The purpose of this catalogue is to list the valid names, nomenclatorial history of, and published references to, the known bees of Sub-Saharan Africa and the western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the honey bee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus). An attempt has been made to include references to all publications on Afrotropical bees since Dalla Torre’s (1896) catalogue, up to and including 2009. All publications dealing with each species are listed under the name combination used. This catalogue includes 2755 valid species and 1133 references. Taxonomic changes, such as new name combinations, with correct latinization and gender, are included. The distribution by country, plants visited, hosts (for parasitic bee species) and parasites are recorded, as are the type’s gender, depository and country locality for each described species (valid and invalid). The following new combinations are included: Amegilla cincta conradsi (Strand), Evylaeus aeratus (Kirby), Evylaeus angustissimus (Cockerell), Evylaeus ankaratrense (Benoist), Evylaeus bellulus (Vachal), Evylaeus bianonis (Cockerell), Evylaeus burnupi (Cockerell), Evylaeus calviniellus (Cockerell), Evylaeus camphorellus (Cockerell), Evylaeus cardiurus (Cockerell), Evylaeus cephalinotus (Cockerell), Evylaeus cessulus (Cockerell), Evylaeus clavigerellus (Cockerell), Evylaeus coeruleodorsatus (Strand), Evylaeus coloratipes (Cockerell), Evylaeus constrictulus (Cockerell), Evylaeus cyaneodiscus (Cockerell), Evylaeus deceptus (Smith), Evylaeus diloloensis (Cockerell), Evylaeus diminutellus (Cockerell), Evylaeus discretulus (Cockerell), Evylaeus epichlorus (Cockerell), Evylaeus gastrophilinus (Cockerell), Evylaeus gendettensis (Cockerell), Evylaeus godmanae (Michener), Evylaeus hemicyaneum (Benoist), Evylaeus hirtulinus (Cockerell), Evylaeus kabetiellus (Cockerell), Evylaeus kampalensis (Cockerell), Evylaeus kasuloi (Cockerell), Evylaeus kowitensis (Cockerell), Evylaeus lactescens (Cockerell), Evylaeus lampronotus (Cameron), Evylaeus latibalteatus (Meade-Waldo), Evylaeus latior (Cockerell), Evylaeus leucophenax (Cockerell), Evylaeus morio (Fabricius), Evylaeus macilentus (Benoist), Evylaeus marshalli (Cockerell); Evylaeus matoporum (Cockerell), Evylaeus mediocre (Benoist), Evylaeus meruensis (Friese), Evylaeus meneliki (Friese), Evylaeus mesopolitus (Cockerell), Evylaeus microsellatus (Cockerell), Evylaeus mirifrons (Cockerell), Evylaeus natensis (Cockerell), Evylaeus nigritulinus (Cockerell), Evylaeus nitididorsatus. Abstract:
A case of intrahepatic cholestasis secondary to treatment with quetiapine in combination with lamotrigine and zopiclone, resulting in severe hypercholesterolaemia without overt lactescence of the plasma, is presented. Abundant lipoprotein-X was seen on lipoprotein electrophoresis. The patient was diagnosed and treated for hyponatraemia which was likely factitious and caused by hypercholesterolaemia. Cholestasis and hypercholesterolaemia resolved over a period of several months after the discontinuation of quetiapine.

Abstract:
Gestational hypertriglyceridemia is well established but is considered an unusual cause of acute pancreatitis with a relatively low incidence. We hereby report a notable triad of hypertriglyceridemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and acute pancreatitis in a woman with 2 months of post-partum status delivered at a private hospital with known case of gestational diabetes mellitus. Presenting with acute abdomen with a surprise on table. Salmon pink coloured blood withdrawn in the vacutainer, turning lactescent post centrifugation. Her serum triglycerides level were 1750 mg/dl, random blood sugar of 870 mg/dl and total cholesterol of 978 mg/dl. Computerized tomography of abdomen was confirmatory of acute pancreatitis. Patient was treated aggressively with intravenous (IV) fluid resuscitation and IV insulin therapy as per diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) management protocol. She recovered well and was discharged on day 4.

Abstract:
Background: Chylothorax in cats represents a challenge due to the possibility of involvement of multiple etiologies and the harmful consequences resulting of the presence of the chylous effusion in the thorax. The causes include neoplasms in the thoracic cavity, heart disease and thoracic injuries. It is imperative that clinical nutritional and therapeutic and / or surgical management be immediate and directed to the treatment of the cause. The objective of this work was to report a case of idiopathic chylothorax in a domestic cat solved through surgical intervention and dietary maintenance applied.Case: A 4-year-old male cat, fed with diet for the age range of adult cats, was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (HV - UFRRJ), with clinical complaint of difficulty breathing, inappetence, prostration and weight loss. In the clinical examination was verified intense tachypnea, presence of heart murmur, normocoratedmucosae, dehydration 7%. The animal was sedated to be submitted to radiographic examination of the thorax with pethidine and midazolam. Thoracic radiographs on the lateral, ventral-dorsal and orthostatic positions were realized and severe pleural effusion was observed in both hemitorax with drainage of 180 mL of lactescent fluid from the right hemithorax and 120 mL of left hemithorax liquid. Through analysis of cavity liquids the effusion was classified as chylous effusion. The hemogram showed a neutrophilic leukocytosis. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations (28 mg/dL and 43 mg/dL, respectively) were lower than the concentrations of the cavity liquid (67 mg/dL and 722 mg/dL, respectively).Ultrasound examination revealed no mass in the thoracic cavity and no changes in the pulmonary parenchyma. The echocardiographic examination was also performed and did not reveal any cardiac alterations. The initial treatment consisted of the clinical approach, through the exclusive alimentary management with low fat diet, in order to reduce toreduce the amount of chylous in the thorax. The rutine was administered at a dose of 250 mg/cat every 8 h orally. After 15 days, due to an unsatisfactory response to conservative treatment, surgical intervention was indicated. The technique used was pleural omentalization with block ligation of the thoracic duct without mesenteric lymphangiography together with pericardectomy and placement of the thoracic drain. During the postoperative period the animal remained under intensive care, with nasal oxygen therapy and intense analgesia during the first 72 h. After 20 days, the production of the chylous liquid was 2 mL/kg/ day, which made it possible to remove the drain. The cat received continuously with the exclusive diet of low fat to reduce the production of the chylous, without recurrence of chylous up to the present moment.Discussion: It is important to establish in a first approach of animals with chylous exudation the management of low-fat foods, along with appropriate pharmacological therapy, monitoring the patient in a constant and cautious way. If conservative clinical intervention is not satisfactory within 5 to 10 days, rapid surgical treatment is essential, due to the risk offibrosing pleuritis with consequent involvement of the pulmonary parenchyma, as occurred in this report. Duct ligation surgery and the pericardectomy was satisfactory for the resolution of the constant chylous production in the thorax of the animal, as well as the use of the low fat diet was essential to reduce the chylous effusion and fibrosing pleurisy, both the interventions made possible the maintenance of the patient’s health and well-being.Keywords: feline, cavitary fluid, quilting effusion, thoracic duct.

Abstract:
As espécies utilizadas foram, Eucalyptus urophylla S T Blake, “eucalipto” (Myrtaceae), Melia azedarach L., “cinamomo” (Meliaceae), Lophantera lactescens Ducke, “lanterneira” (Malpighiaceae), Pinus elliottii Engelm, “pinus” (Pinaceae), Inga marginata Willd, “ingá” (Mimosaceae).

Abstract:
Radlk., Pradosia longipedicellata Alves-Araújo & M. Alves, Pradosia brevipes (Pierre) T.D.
