Abstract:
Abstract The present paper is focused on the figures of the Dark Lady of the sonnets and Hermia from A Midsummer Night‟s Dream as modes of writing against the Petrarchian ideal. The former is the most explicit of Shakespeare‘s suite of “dark ladies” (which includes Anne, Kate, Hero, Phoebe, Cleopatra, and Rosaline), while the latter is arguably his least individualised character, yet one that has benefitted from more public attention than most thanks to the generous circulation, continuous adaptation and re-contextualisation of the text. Two useful concepts for the discussion I propose are what Mikhail Bakhtin terms “re-accentuation” and “heteroglossia” as these texts allow different voices to dispute the place and worth of a dark-skinned woman, yet it is precisely by creating a space to voice them all that it creates a possibility to shake up the aesthetic, as well as the literary canon. The ontological status of the Dark Lady and Hermia is also of interest, so that a linguistic and stylistic analysis is carried out in order to highlight how conflicting ideologies attempt to appropriate their image, namely the hegemonic versus the inclusive understandings of what James Hughes calls the “personhood-based theory”. The revolutionary aspect brought to the table by Shakespeare is his choice for a transition from the hegemonic perspective to one which judges the two “dark ladies” on their own terms.

Full text
Abstract:
Jerry Herman is celebrated for his ability to showcase strong leading female roles in his canon of work that spans some fifty years. In writing such strong female characters, he must produce strong male counterparts to these women who can communicate on their level and not become overpowered by the women s presence. I was cast in the musical revue, It s Today: An Evening of Jerry Herman, conceived, directed, and choreographed by Earl D. Weaver. My portion of the revue explored Herman s leading male roles of Cornelius from Hello, Dolly!; Mack from Mack and Mabel; Colonel Tadeusz Boleslav Stjerbinsky from The Grand Tour; and Albin from La Cage aux Folles, My analysis of these specific leading male roles uncovers how their relationships with their leading ladies defines their character in each of the musicals for which they were written. It also helped me define multiple characters in the course of a revue with no plot or storyline. Though all these male characters provided me with challenges, my greatest task was defining Albin in La Cage aux Folles. He provides a unique perspective in that he exemplifies a combination of both male/female characteristics. He is a man who regularly portrays a woman onstage in a drag club as well as assuming a female role in a homosexual relationship. He serves as the  leading lady for La Cage aux Folles though his character is considered a  leading man role. He is the consummate representation of all Jerry Herman leading roles, and embodies many of the themes Herman utilizes in all his work.

Schwartz, Stephanie. "Learned Ladies- an education through design." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11584.

Full text
Abstract:
Learned Ladies opened on February 7, 2008 and ran until February 16th, 2008 at the Frederic Wood Theatre. It was directed by Patrick Gauthier, with scenery by Stephanie Schwartz, costumes by Carmen Alatorre, Lighting by Kristen Robinson, and sound by Craig Alfredson, Patrick Caracas, and James Chen. Designing the production of “Learned Ladies” for the Frederic Wood Theater was a true education in design. Not only did the production provide the artistic challenge of bringing an antiquated play to modern audiences, it also provided the technical challenge of designing a set that worked harmoniously with over-the-top costumes and video technology. The designers of the show were asked to create a look that married the lines of the historic period and the palette of today’s. Furthermore, due to the static nature of the scenes, the director, Patrick Gauthier, gave me the task of creating a playground for the actors to physically express themselves beyond the confines of the text. He was also keen to use my initial suggestion of having the actors use projected slides in a gilded frame as a “television” of sorts, with changing ”channels” reflecting the mood. This frame would also aid in the opening “dumb show” as a bearer of text and titles, and continue to announce the different acts throughout the show. The set itself needed to appear large and as expansive as a real Salon would have at the time; this was accomplished by opening up the stage to almost its full depth. A sense of height was conveyed by hanging long sheer curtain panels. Furniture was modified to give a period line with modern fabrics that complimented the curtains and floor. The final touch entailed creating large stacks of loose and fixed books that the actors could run around, sit on, and throw. The excess of books littering the stage was meant to be a visual statement of play’s theme about the abuse and misuse of education. Overall, the set succeeded in being a battleground for the sexes as the story unfolded.
