Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the narrative practice of Latin American Existentialism. My project tracks the structures, themes, and interpretations of Existentialism across national borders in the belief that a common expression exists which is distinctly Latin American. I begin this philosophical cartography, with four Existential(ist) novels produced in Latin America during the 1930s. Specifically, I will examine the Existentialist quality of Enrique Labrador Ruiz's El laberinto de si­ mismo (1933), Mari­a Luisa Bombal's La ultima niebla (1934) and La amortajada (1938), and Graciliano Ramos's Angustia (1936). These narratives are analyzed in relation to the core thematic of Existential philosophy. I read these narratives as Existential(ist) because they are of, relating to and characterized by a philosophy of existence, and because they simultaneously produce an Existential discourse. My study is, at one level, comparative in that I pursue the points of emergence of Existentialism's prominent categories not only across national borders, but also across disciplines. I relate the tradition of Latin American thought in the first half of the 20th century and Existential philosophy from Europe to collectivize the thematic points of contact. These I contrast with our literary production of the 1930s. By emphasizing the particularities and continuations of Latin America's contribution to the Existential canon I, in effect, periodize an era which is foundational in the history of Latin American literature. Furthermore, by acknowledging the literary presence of Latin American Existentialism we can appreciate the explicit narrative interrogation of the Self through aesthetic, ethical, and ontological parameters.

Abstract:
Since the late 1980s, there has been a steady production of Latin American narrative fiction in Spanish concerning China and the Chinese. Despite the work written about China and its relation to Latin America, no comprehensive examination of the representation of China in literature has been produced thus far. This thesis analyses nine novels in which China is the main theme, exploring how China has been represented in Latin American narrative fiction in recent decades. Using 'China' as a multidimensional term informed by Sara Ahmed's understanding of 'strangerness' (2000), this thesis first explores how the novels studied here both highlight and undermine assumptions about China that have long shaped Latin America's understanding of 'China'. Secondly, using theories of the fetish, it shows 'China' to be a kind of literary/imaginary 'third' term which reframes Latin American discourses of alterity. On one level, it is argued that these texts play with the way that 'China' stands in as a wandering signifier and as a metonym for Asia, a gesture that essentialises it as an unchanging other. On another level, it argues that the novels' employment of 'China' resists essentialist constructions of Latin American identity. 'China' is thus shown here to be a symbolic figure in Latin America, serving as a concept through which criticism of the construction of fetishised otherness becomes possible, as well as criticism of the exclusion inherent in essentialist discourses of identity, such as those contained in mestizaje. These discourses of mestizaje have traditionally emphasised racial and cultural mixture, and have excluded the Chinese from discourses of Latin American identity. As a result, 'China' is used here to deconstruct bound identities, interrupting discourses of otherness within Latin America. From this perspective, it is argued that these novels tend to gesture towards an understanding of identity as 'being-with', and community as inoperative, as developed by Jean-Luc Nancy (1991, 2000), whilst taking a cosmopolitan stance, as developed by Berthold Schoene (2011). The novels have been divided between those that set their stories in China, such as Cesar Aira's 'Una novela china' (1987); those that explore Chinese communities in Latin America, such as Ariel Magnus' 'Un chino en bicicleta' (2007); and those that focus on Latin American travel to China, such as Ximena Sanchez Echenique's 'El ombligo del dragon' (2007). Indebted to Ahmed's, Nancy's and Schoene's theoretical perspectives, Chapter 1 explores how 'China', as both a physical space and a discursive context, foregrounds negotiations of power in the histories of both China and Latin America. Chapter 2 studies how 'China' is used to recall and interrogate the notion of an indistinct 'oriental'. The final chapter seeks to understand the ways in which the novels articulate travel to China as a means of challenging Eurocentric structures and 'national' epistemologies. Ultimately, by disclosing the complex operations through which 'China' is represented in Latin American literary discourses, this study explores possible further reconfigurations of Latin American notions of identity and community as non-essentialist and in constant development.

A tese acompanha as trajetórias de Diamela Eltit, João Gilberto Noll e Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill, realizando através do trabalho desses três escritores uma cartografia das questões estéticas e políticas que atravessam as últimas décadas. Seus projetos narrativos, tão diferentes entre si quanto pertinentes para nosso tempo, foram marcados por uma perda de sentido referente às crises da utopia revolucionária e vanguardista, que se torna visível na transição da ditadura à pós-ditadura. A partir dessa perda, surgirão algumas alternativas para uma literatura por vir: uma escrita performática, que coloca em jogo o corpo do próprio escritor para dar sentido aos trânsitos contemporâneos, no caso de Noll; uma escrita agonística, que faz da provocação cínica uma arma contra a apatia contemporânea, no de Fogwill; uma escrita resistente, que deixa ver os efeitos perversos do consenso neoliberal, no de Eltit.
This thesis follows the paths of Diamela Eltit, João Gilberto Noll and Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill, charting, through their works, the territory of aesthetical and political questions of the last decades. The narrative projects of these writers, as distinct from each other as they are pertinent to our time, were marked by a loss of meaning that relates to the crisis of revolutionary and avant-garde utopias, which becomes visible in the transition from dictatorship to post- dictatorship. Taking this loss as a starting point, some alternatives for a literature to come will appear: a performatic writing, that puts in place the body of the writer himself to give sense to contemporary transits, in Noll´s case; an agonistic writing, that uses cynical provocation as a weapon against contemporary apathy, in Fogwill´s; a resistant writing, that allows us to see the perverse effects of the neoliberal consensus, in Eltit´s.

Abstract:
The Irish throughout their tumultuous history immigrated not only to North America but across Latin America, particularly to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, and Mexico. Ireland and many of these Latin American countries share a close yet under-examined relationship, inasmuch as they are predominantly Catholic, post-colonial, hybrid populations with fraught immigrant experiences abroad and long histories of resisting Anglo-centric imperialism at home. More particularly, the peoples of these nations engage intimately with the dead (as shown, for example, by the Mexican Day of the Dead and Celtic roots of Halloween), and the dead appear frequently in literature from these countries that takes up issues of colonialism and anti-colonial struggles. The dead can function as repositories for forgotten history and allies in counter-imperial struggle; these roles become particularly important in the 20th century, wherein the forces of economic modernization have rushed to erase the memories of the dead. From the speech of the dead in the prose works of Juan Rulfo, Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Samuel Beckett, and Carlos Fuentes, to the anticolonial poetics of William Butler Yeats and Julia de Burgos, this thesis examines how these two regions have, both in parallel and in concert, utilized the dead to bolster various nationalistic projects. This dissertation also explores patterns of Irish/Latin American literary citation and influence, tracing, for example, how Jorge Luis Borges’s responded to James Joyce, or how a scene from Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels is re-enacted in the novels of Flann O’Brien and Gabriel García Márquez. This project contributes to comparative approaches to Irish literary and modernist studies, improves our nascent understanding of how the Irish and Latin Americans have interacted throughout their overlapping histories, and expands our comprehension of how the dead have been and continue to be utilized across the developing world to resist economic neo-colonialism.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the rhetoric of childhood to comprehend how Latin American literature and film signify childhood. It furthermore analyzes the figure of the child as a rhetorical device in the construction of literary and cinematographic meaning in twentieth and twenty-first century poetry, narrative prose and film. I claim that, contrary to prevailing cultural notions of childhood innocence, the child often constitutes an unsettling presence, signaling textual as well as extradiegetic opacities and tensions. Echoes of the Child is divided into three chapters that each present a different approach to childhood. Chapter 1 posits the politicization of the child narrator’s voice as both enabling and restricting the articulation of socio-political trauma. Analyzing texts by Nellie Campobello, Rosario Castellanos, Juan Pablo Villalobos and Juan Rulfo, I contend that child narrators create and subvert meaning depending on the position they occupy vis-à-vis the socio-political turmoil they witness. The second chapter postulates an uneasy alliance between what I call the ‘visual pull’ of the child on screen, and the erotic charge of the image in three Argentine films by Lucrecia Martel, Julia Solomonoff and Federico León / Martín Rejtman. I probe the relationship between the child’s strong screen presence and the forms in which the cinematographic image offers the child ways of transforming sexuality into sensuality; resisting heteronormative sexuality; and of eluding the spell of the adult’s libidinal gaze. Performing when she is merely present, I argue that the child bestows a performative dimension on her acting and her very presence. The third and final chapter posits infancy as an impossible experience in poetry from the historical avant-garde by Oliverio Girondo, César Vallejo and Vicente Huidobro. I contend that reading the poetry guided by the infant reveals two sides of ‘experience;’ the poetic expression of the infant’s experience of the world, a question I broach through psychoanalysis, and the poet’s attempts at articulating transcendental experience in language. My analyses reveal how the rhetoric of childhood bears on issues and dynamics in the socio-political realm; it thus contributes to our understanding of processes of signification within Latin American culture.

Abstract:
This study examines the political theory of modernity as it appears in the work of contemporary Latin American writers and thinkers (pensadores). It is designed to help bridge the gap that separates the North American and European dialogue on modernity from the parallel dialogue on modernity currently flourishing in Latin America. The dialogues are brought together in two ways. First, the theory of modernity, which is still often thought to apply only or primarily to the developed world, is subjected to the challenge of the Latin American political and cultural context. Many features of the theory are found to apply equally well to both cultures, and these features provide the basis for the second "bridging" of the two dialogues, in which some of the most interesting Latin American responses to the problems of modernity are brought to the attention of North American and European political scholars. After reviewing the problem of modernity in some depth, the work of Jose Ortega y Gasset is presented both as a link to German philosophical thought and as a pattern for subsequent discussion of modernity in the Spanish-speaking world. Ortega's uniquely Latin way of understanding modernity is then compared to other philosophical approaches, and placed within the context of political literature in Latin America. Literature is shown to be a uniquely suitable forum for conveying Ortega's approach to modernity because it expresses in itself the central role of arts and culture in his political thought. The balance of the study focuses on the works of three contemporary Latin American authors: Octavio Paz of Mexico, Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Colombia, and Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru. Each author's major works are placed within the context of the model Latin American response to modernity inspired by Ortega and analyzed for significant contributions to the discussion of modernity. Their most important insights center around the need to assimilate the value of tradition in a new approach to modernity by means of some form of democratic dialogue combined with critical appreciation for the cultural uniqueness of nations.

Abstract:
The so-called Crusader States established by European settlers in the Levant at the end of the eleventh century gave rise to a variety of Latin literary works, including historiography, sermons, pilgrim guides, monastic literature, and poetry. The first part of this study (Chapter 1) critically reevaluates the Latin literary texts and combines the evidence, including unpublished materials, to chart the development of genres over the course of the twelfth century. The second half of the study (Chapters 2–4) subjects this evidence to a cultural-rhetorical analysis, and asks how Latin literary works, as products by and for a cultural elite, appropriated preexisting materials and developed strategies of their own to construct a Frankish cultural identity of the Levant. Proceeding on three thematically different, but closely interrelated, lines of inquiry, it is argued that authors in the Latin East made cultural claims by drawing on the classical tradition, on the Bible, and on ideas of a Carolingian golden age. Chapter 2 demonstrates that Latin historians drew upon classical traditions to fit the Latin East within established frameworks of history and geography, in which the figures Vespasian and Titus are particularly prevalent. Chapter 3 traces the development of the conception of the Franks in the East as a “People of God” and the use of biblical texts to support this claim, especially the Books of the Maccabees. Chapter 4 explores the extent to which authors drew on the legend of Charlemagne as a bridge between East and West. Although the appearance of similar motifs signals a degree of cultural unity among the authors writing in the Latin East, there is an abundant variety in the way they are utilized, inasmuch as they are dynamic rhetorical strategies open to adaptation to differing exigencies. New monastic and ecclesiastical institutions produced Latin writings that demonstrate an urge to establish political and religious authority. While these struggles for power resemble to some extent those between secular and ecclesiastical authorities and institutions in Western Europe, the literary topoi the authors draw upon are specific to their new locale, and represent the creation of a new cultural-literary tradition.

No âmbito da literatura brasileira, Macunaíma de Mário de Andrade é uma obra cuja complexidade formal é amplamente reconhecida. Para sua abordagem, tal complexidade leva geralmente à sondagem de duas fontes principais: a Europa (as vanguardas européias) e as culturas indígenas (explicação mítica). Nossa tese investiga essa questão formal, uma das preocupações da arte moderna, recorrendo a uma literatura periférica: a literatura negro-africana de língua francesa. Descobrimos que Mário de Andrade e o escritor negro-africano fundamentam-se na tradição e na oralidade para construir suas obras. Dessa forma, se estabelece uma coerência entre a obra de arte e a sociedade que a produz. O escritor brasileiro e os escritores negro-africanos coincidem em estabelecer uma relação entre a forma da obra de arte e a cultura, criando assim uma nova forma de narrativa calcada na experiência cultural e não na experiência social.
Within the sphere of Brazilian literature, Mário de Andrade\'s Macunaíma is a work of art whose formal complexity is largely acknowledge. In order to approach such work we must take into consideration the fact that such complexity take us usually to the probe of two main sources: Europe (the European avant-garde) and the native cultures (mythical explanation). Our thesis investigates this formal issue, one of the concerns of modern art. We do this by working with a peripheric literature: a black-African French speaking literature. In the course of our research we discovered that both Mário de Andrade and the black-African writers base the construction of their artistic work in the tradition and in orality. In this way, it is established a coherence between the work of art and the society in which it was conceived. The brazilian writer and the black-african writers coincide in establishing a relationship between culture and the form of the work of art, creating, by doing this, a new way of narrating based in the cultural experience, not in the social one.

Humor can be underestimated, but to laugh or not to laugh is as transcendental as the decision to be or not to be. That is the question of this dissertation: the productive encounter of challenging instances of humor in Latin-American literary texts that not only display humor in charged violent backgrounds, but create humorous traps and spaces for meta-humorist reflections, inviting the reader to judge whether to laugh or not to laugh in an aesthetic and ethical sense. Those instances of perplexity would ask the reader to reflect on the nature of the humor displayed, its targets, context, refinement, creativity, meaning and outcomes, among other questions that laugher implies. This would foster a more solicitous public who recognizes a liberating good laugh from a violent one, avoiding the reproduction of stereotypes, hate speeches or the consent of an oppressive status quo.

Resumo: Esta tese propõe um projeto de tradução poética para os cinco primeiros cantos do poema épico Thebais, do autor romano Públio Papínio Estácio (séc. I d.C.), fundamentado no objetivo de manifestar, em português, as peculiaridades da poesia estaciana. Para isso, a tradução foi precedida por uma análise das principais características do texto e por uma discussão sobre a natureza e o próprio papel da tradução, feita a partir de concepções contemporâneas desenvolvidas no âmbito dos Estudos da Tradução. Após a tradução, são apresentados comentários críticos e explicativos para cada um dos cinco cantos com vistas a discutir, destacar e esclarecer passagens mais obscuras, referências sutis e questões relevantes para a construção de sentidos no poema.
Abstract: This thesis proposes a poetic translation project for the first five books of the epic poem Thebais, by the Roman author Publius Papinius Statius (1st century AD), based on the objec- tive of expressing in Portuguese the peculiarities of Statian poetry. For this, the translation was preceded by an analysis of the main characteristics of the text and a by a discussion about the nature and the proper role of the translation, based on contemporary conceptions developed within the framework of the Translation Studies. This thesis examines the concept of the sublime as represented by three Latin authors of the Neronian period: Lucan, Seneca and Petronius. Through analysis of these texts I explore, first, the relationship between Pseudo-Longinus’ Peri Hupsous and post-Classical theorisations of the sublime; and, second, the complex relationship between the sublime and politico-ethical discourses of freedom and oppression. In doing so, I argue in particular for Lucan’s epic Bellum Civile as a vital and hitherto overlooked text of the sublime and, more broadly, for the Neronian period as an important phase in the concept’s artistic history.

Abstract:
Umorismo as Luigi Pirandello defines it is distinct from the general body of literary material meant to invoke laughter. It consciously turns rhetorical convention on its head: it creates unexpected oppositions through conscious and careful use of certain types of language in contexts where it is not expected. The aim of my study is to offer readers new ways to approach Giovanni Boccaccio’s lesser-known works as fundamentally humorous texts, among other things, and to observe how they are crafted and what sets them apart from other works to which one might compare them. I argue that Boccaccio created the Amorosa visione, the Teseida delle nozze di Emilia, the Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta, and the De mulieribus claris with a sense of umorismo, that is to say, by playing with the conventions that each book’s respective genre invokes and then subverting expectations set up by those conventions. I examine each of these four works in its own chapter, with special attention to authorial voice, fictionality, narrative strategies, and intertextual practices. I rely chiefly on close readings of the texts themselves, in the original language first and foremost, and I attempt to draw out the humor that I see in the way they have been composed, often a result of play between their content and their structure and style. Ultimately, the umorismo in these works is, as Pirandello would agree it should be, not immediately evident: it takes patience and close reading to uncover. Boccaccio is staunchly in favor of critical and persistent reading as a necessary value that all poetry and fiction should require. His treatise in the Genealogia deorum gentilium on how readers should interact with books explicitly promotes the sort of reading required to perceive and parse the umorismo within his texts.

This dissertation is a survey of postmodern historical fiction in 20th and 21st century Spanish American literature. It has diverse manifestations, but the defining characteristic of this kind of historical fiction is a rejection of any rigid distinction between historical and fictional discourse. This is a descriptive rather than a normative study: it examines how eight different authors use the techniques of postmodern historical fiction to develop implicit critiques of the “great man” theory of history. The Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle popularized this theory in the 1800s, and it asserts that biography is the proper model for history, namely, the biography of prominent individuals – “great men.” It treats these people as the source of history. Opposing this historiographic ideology, many authors of postmodern historical fiction see such figures as subjects that can be “written” and “re-written”; they are not the source of history, but the product of historical discourse. I conduct close readings of nine primary texts to elucidate how they challenge the “great man” historiography of four significant figures from Spanish American history: Montezuma, Simón Bolívar, Christopher Columbus, and Ernesto “Che” Guevara. I conclude that the historiographic critiques in these texts converge around three common strategies in their critiques: an extension of character from the domain of fiction to the domain of history, the subversion of the literary genres of biography and autobiography, and a commitment to rewriting the traditional narratives of specific historical events.

Além da tradução apresenta-se ainda análise de algumas questões fonéticas que aparecem indicadas na obra quando os autores explicam o significado das palavras.

This is important work, poorly disclosed in Portuguese. In addition to the translation there is an analyzis some phonetic issues that appear listed in the work when the authors explain the meaning of words.

Ao lado da tradução integral e inaugural em língua portuguesa dos 1456 versos do Waltharius, escrito em língua latina provavelmente entre os séculos IX e X em algum mosteiro do Império Carolíngio, é apresentado um estudo de aproximação à obra, onde são descritos e analisados os aspectos formais e estilísticos (metro, rima, aliteração, assonância, figuras, tempo, espaço, personagens e narrador), o diálogo com a tradição poética, e o problema do gênero literário. A partir do reconhecimento da presença do processo de imitação e dos paralelos estruturais entre o Waltharius e seus antecessores poéticos, entre os quais se destaca a Eneida de Virgílio, é levantada a discussão sobre a tipologia do poema, se épica ou não. Ao opor a definição poética no texto do Waltharius com os teorizadores de gêneros poéticos antigos e medievais, queda a conclusão de que o poema não é composto a partir dos parâmetros de gênero e sim de modelo, sendo, acima de tudo, um poema virgiliano.
Together with the full and inaugural translation into Portuguese of the Waltharius 1456 verses, written in Latin probably between the ninth and tenth centuries in a monastery of the Carolingian Empire, it is presented a study approaching to the work, in which the formal and stylistic aspects (meter, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, figures, time, space, characters and narrator), the dialogue with the poetic tradition, and the problem of literary genre are described and analyzed. From the recognition of the imitation process presence and of the structural parallels between the Waltharius and its poetic predecessors, among which stands out Virgils Aeneid, the discussion is raised on the poems typology, whether epic or not. Opposing the poetic definition found in the Waltharius text to the ancient and medieval theorists of poetic genres, we are lead to the conclusion that the poem is not composed from the parameters of genre, but of model, and it is, above all, a Virgilian poem.

Tomando como base teórica os Estudos da Recepção de Clássicos, esta pesquisa de mestrado centrou-se durante três anos na tragédia latina Medeia, de Sêneca, incluindo sua tradução em português e uma análise abrangente de aspectos retóricos, para identificar elementos que se tenham provado elos permanentes na cadeia de recepção de peças de teatro da Antiguidade clássica. Esta investigação assumiu como textos mediadores nesse intervalo de vinte séculos tanto o repertório shakespeariano como o Teatro da Crueldade de Antonin Artaud, sendo que ambos foram em alguma medida apropriados por dramaturgos do século XX como Heine Müller, Sarah Kane e Ted Hughes. Todos os três se voltaram para Sêneca antes de escrever suas respectivas peças Medeamaterial, Phaedras Love e Senecas Oedipus, que também foram objeto deste estudo.
Taking into account the concepts of the Reception Studies of Classics, this three-year long Masters Degree investigation centered on Seneca\'s Medea Latin tragedy, including its translation into Portuguese and a thoroughly analysis of rhetorical aspects, in order to identify elements which have proven themselves as permanent links into the Reception chain of Ancient theatre plays. This research took as mediating texts in this 20th century span transmission net William Shakespeare\'s repertory and Antonin Artaud\'s Cruelty Theatre, both of which have in some extent been appropriated by 20th century playwrights such as Heiner Müller, Sarah Kane and Ted Hughes, the three of them having gone back to Seneca before setting up their Medeamaterial, Phaedra\'s Love and Seneca\'s Oedipus plays, respectively, which also make up the corpora of this study.

Esta pesquisa de mestrado objetivou o estudo da peça latina Otávia do Pseudo-Sêneca, que inclui uma tradução para o português, acompanhada de notas e de um estudo introdutório. Este trabalho centrou-se em apontar o que se têm discutido entre os estudiosos de literatura clássica em relação à peça. Foi pertinente para esse expediente uma análise do gênero praetexta, do qual faz parte esta peça, considerando as divergências entre praetexta republicana e imperial, bem como a observação de como a peça integra mito e história. Essa pesquisa inclui também considerações sobre como Otávia dialoga com as tragédias de Sêneca, autor ao qual a peça foi atribuída erroneamente.
This Master\'s degree investigation aimed the study of the latin play Pseudo-Seneca\'s Octavia, which includes a translation into Portuguese, accompanied by notes and an introductory study. This work focused on showing what has been discussed between the classical literary scholars about the play. It was relevant to this expedient an analysis of praetexta genre, which this play is part, considering the differences between republican and imperial praetexta, as well as the observation of how the play includes myth and history. This research also includes considerations on how Octavia dialogues with Senecan tragedies, author to whom the play was erroneously attributed.

In the United States in the mid-1960's, Chicano cultural nationalists mobilized a generation by recuperating the history and mythology of the pre-conquest Aztecs as strategies of political resistance. Claiming themselves la Raza de Bronce the Bronze race) in their art, literature, and political discourse, Chicano activists and intellectuals distinguished themselves racially from white America and worked toward reunifying an indigenous culture that had been fragmented by colonization and diaspora. This discursive practice of reinscribing Mexican Indian ancestry is a political act that I refer to as narrating the Aztec Nation. Indigenous movement activists across the Americas have often reclaimed their pre-colonial histories. "Aztec Nation" examines the impact of Chicano cultural nationalist revisions of Mexican indigenismo (politics and aesthetics of the post-1910 indigenous movement) upon race, class, gender, and sexuality in contemporary Chicano and Chicana literature and political discourse. In my analysis of Chicano and Chicana political manifestos, graphic art, poetry, essays, and novels, I trace various Chicano cultural nationalist expressions of indigenista ideology throughout el movimiento (the Chicano movement). In particular, I develop critical approaches for rereading Chicana literature and activist journalism published in Chicano/a movement newspapers and journals between 1969 and 1979 that emphasize Chicana faminist reinventions of indigenismo as a transnational alternative to ideological limitations within the Chicano cultural nationalist and second wave white American feminist movements. I offer a new critical term: "Chicana indigenista feminism," which recognizes a distinct Chicana feminist discourse that is characterized by an ongoing negotiation of mestiza (mixed blood) identity. My investigation begins with analyses of Chicano cultural nationalist literature and political documents from 1964 and ends with a reevaluation of chicana indigenista feminist theories posited as recently as 1994.

Resumo: O presente trabalho realiza uma análise comparativa entre os romances Desmundo (1996), da escritora brasileira Ana Miranda, e Finisterre (2005) da escritora argentina María Rosa Lojo. Propomos demonstrar como os romances selecionados apresentam uma afinidade no modo de conceber a reconstrução das heroínas, por meio da revisão de episódios históricos traumáticos dos séculos XVI e XIX, que outorgam às figuras da órfã e da cativa branca, respectivamente, um papel emblemático na construção do ideal do que futuramente seriam as modernas nações latino-americanas. O questionamento dos mitos raciais e culturais é feito a partir das memórias individuais e das compartilhadas com o imaginário coletivo que apresentam uma versão inédita da história, pelo olhar marginal da voz feminina. Ademais, pretendemos verificar as tensões entre o Outro e a mulher, nas quais podemos ver refletidas as relações entre as protagonistas e os discursos que legitimam a autoridade das identidades dominantes. Nesse sentido, podemos ler importantes discussões de cunho ideológico que atravessam os romances e confirmam a desconstrução da univocidade dos discursos fundacionais da Nação, assim como o desejo de refundação de suas bases pela conciliação entre pares, tradicionalmente opostos. Abstract: This work makes a comparative analysis of Desmundo novels (1996), by the Brazilian writer Ana Miranda and Finisterre (2005) by the Argentine writer, María Rosa Lojo. We propose to show how the selected novels have an affinity in the way of conceiving the reconstruction of the heroines, through of the traumatic historical episodes review of the Sixteenth and Nineteenth century, which allow to figures of the orphan and white slave woman an emblematic role in the ideal of building which in the future would be the modern Latin American nations. The questioning of the racial and cultural myths is done from the individual memories and shared with the collective imagination that present a unique version of the story, through of the woman's voice marginal eye. Furthermore, we intend to verify the tensions between the Other and the woman, in which we see reflected the relationships between the protagonists and the discourses that legitimize the authority of the dominant identities. In this sense, we can read important ideological discussions that cross the novels and confirm the nation deconstruction of the univocity of the founding discourses and the desire to re-foundation of its bases for reconciliation between pairs traditionally opposed. Abstract:
This thesis examines certain aspects of Scottish Latin, particularly in the period 1580-1637. The first chapter chronicles the endeavours of John Scot of Scotstarvet to compile an anthology of Scottish Latin poetry, based on the unpublished letters to Scot in the NLS. Both the letters and contemporary verse indicate that the project was under way twenty years before the Delitiae was printed and that John Leech was an important influence. Leech's letters to Scot highlight Scot's editorial reticence, confirmed by the alterations in Scotstarvet's own verse. The final product was more a reflection of the taste and ethos of the early 1620s, after which Scot apparently ceased to collect material. The second chapter documents the attempts to impose a national grammar upon the schools, akin to the Lily-Colet grammar in England. Attempts to provide a radical alternative to Despauter, firstly by a committee and later by Alexander Hume, were inhibited by the inherent conservatism of teaching establishments. The most successful of the new grammars, those by Wedderburn and the Dunbar Rudiments, remained as general introductions to Despauter. Evidence for the composition of Latin verse in schools and universities, both statutory and manuscript, is assessed in the third chapter. Active involvement in the practice by local authorities influenced the range and extent of verse being written after 1600. The poetry of David Wedderburn of Aberdeen, promoted by the town council, reflects that influence. The importance of teaching methods upon a poet's future development is most clearly seen in the verse of David Hume, discussed in the fourth chapter. Hume continually re-works and re-evaluates the themes of his adolescent verse, measuring them against the achievements of James VI, whose birth he had earlier celebrated. The thesis concludes with a check-list of Scots whose Latin verse was printed before 1640.

Resumo: Jorge Luis Borges é considerado por muitos críticos e escritores um dos autores mais importantes do século XX. Afinal, sua poética revolucionou a prática literária, bem como os estudos de literatura, tornando-se paradigmática. Atualmente, observamos que o escritor argentino não é apenas alvo de inúmeros ensaios, teses e biografias, mas também foi convertido em personagem de vários romances, contos, crônicas, peças teatrais, filmes e até histórias em quadrinhos. Nesse sentido, Pablo Brescia (2008) assinala que há uma tendência a "literaturizar" Borges, isto é, transformá-lo em objeto literário. O estudioso acrescenta que nos estudos borgeanos ainda há um espaço ignorado sobre o modo como os escritores (re) leram o autor argentino, particularmente, no âmbito ficcional. Considerando a existência da referida lacuna, entendemos ser justificável a realização de um estudo que examine esta questão. Assim, o objetivo de nosso trabalho é contribuir para a compreensão do processo de conversão de Borges em personagem de outros autores, especificamente, no âmbito das literaturas argentina e brasileira, ou melhor, latino-americana. Destarte, selecionamos como corpus desta pesquisa os seguintes romances: El simulador (1990), de Jorge Manzur; Las libres del Sur. Una novela sobre Victoria Ocampo (2004), de María Rosa Lojo, Matar a Borges (2012), de Francisco Cappellotti, Borges e os orangotangos eternos (2000), de Luis Fernando Veríssimo; O romance de Borges (2000), de Hamilton Alves e Memorial de Buenos Aires (2006), de Antonio Fernando Borges. Observamos que essas narrativas giram em torno de biografemas de Borges e de sua literatura, dialogam com a poética borgeana e a história da literatura, além de utilizarem a intertextualidade e a metaficção como principais recursos estilísticos
Abstract: Jorge Luis Borges is regarded as one of the most important XX century writers from many critics' and writers' standpoint. Therefore, his poetry, which became a paradigmatic one, has revolutionized the literary practice as well as the literary studies. Currently, we observe that the Argentinian writer is not only analyzed in several essays, theses and biographies, but also the writer himself has been converted into a recurring character in various novels, short stories, chronicles, plays, films and comics. In this sense, Pablo Brescia (2008) points out that there is a tendency in fictionalizing Borges, that is, to make him into a literary object. Brescia adds that instudies on Borges there is still an ignored aspect concerning the way some writers have (re)read the Argentinian author, especially within the fictional sphere. Considering the existence of that gap we may justify the accomplishment of a study about this topic. Thus, this research work aims at contributing to the understanding of the process of Borges' conversion into a character in the production by other writers, specifically within the scope of Latin American literature, such as, the Argentinian and Brazilian ones. Thereby, the corpus of this research consists of the following novels: Jorge Manzur's El simulador (1990); María Rosa Lojo's Las libres del Sur. Abstract:
This thesis discusses the notion of amicitia in early Christian literature. By examining letters and normative texts ranging from the third to the early fifth century, the study illuminates not only how contemporary authors shaped friendship conceptually but also how these concepts relate to the actual social practice. Typically, scholars confine their reading of Christian friendship to the late antique period. In so doing, they approach amicitia either as a particular kind of relationship performing crucial social functions or as a subject for theorization that followed the example of a longstanding ancient philosophical tradition. Particularly influential has been the view that links amicitia with affection and love. Hence, scholars tend to stress the inclusiveness of friendship. By contrast, my own study focuses on the aspect of exclusion as the necessary by-product of social inclusion processes. Along these lines, amicita is described as existing in a dialectical opposition with its antonym, inimicitia. This approach yielded a number of insights. First, as the study moves into uncharted territory, the examination of third century texts highlights a tradition of amicitia-related thought that reached further back than has previously been assumed. From this, a more nuanced picture of friendship emerges that is not constrained by scholarly established boundaries between different fields of study. Second, the principle of inclusion and exclusion, dividing the world into amici and inimici, has been revealed as a powerful tool in church politics and religious controversy that established sharp boundaries between competing Christian factions. This view, which posits the truth of faith as the necessary prerequisite for friendship, is set off against other contemporary voices that did not make amicitia dependent on a particular religious group affiliation. Third, while disentangling friendship from the question of love, the character of Christian amicitia is viewed against the backdrop of the divine household. Though the conceptual overlap between friendship and kinship is not unique to the Christian tradition, such thinking ties in with an idea of community that builds on the paternity of God. These findings have implications for both the study of ancient friendship and the history of the early church. They improve our understanding of the relation between the conceptualization of amicitia and the actual social practice and moreover offer a deep insight into the social dynamics of contemporary religious controversies.

Abstract:
This thesis creates a gendered typology of women’s testimonio that foregrounds the Cold War context of the genre. This new perspective reveals that contrary to the assertions of some critics, the texts struggle to convey a unitary propagandic message. Rather, their prime purpose is to counter hegemonic discourse. Yet, far from being unliterary or impersonal, they impart much personal information using a diversity of stylistic devices. The testimonios challenge the profoundly gendered national security discourse of their own governments and the US. The argument that brutal counter-insurgency tactics, widespread incarceration and torture, were necessary to combat “communist-inspired” insurgency is invalidated by these testimonios which replace dichotomising and reductionist Cold War propaganda with accounts of the local, subjective and personal reasons for political involvement. The texts disclose the potentially traumatising lived consequences of US foreign policy and national security strategies to reveal their disproportionate and excessive nature. However, the testimonialistas’ sense of a greater purpose, collective identity and belonging to a wider community enables them to remain resilient in spite of adverse experiences. Despite their loyalty to utopian and egalitarian ideals, sexism from within leftist movements and governments is exposed and denounced by the female protagonists as patriarchal institutions, traditions and gendered identities are consistently undermined. Latin American women, as guerrilleras, organisers and members of peasant and indigenous communities, present themselves as defiant protagonists who, aside from the male-dominated master narratives of the superpowers, demonstrate the strength of their political agency, psychological resilience and ideological convictions.
