Dans un rapport de recherche récemment paru (Holtus/Kramer 1986), et qui se propose de faire le point des travaux relatifs au domaine rhétoroman (d'après le terme scientifique allemand „Rätoromanisch" forgé par Th. Gartner en 1883) ou ladin (d'après le terme scientifique italien „ladino" forgé par G. l. Ascoli en 1873) parus entre 1976 et 1985, il est question, entre autres, aussi du problème de „l'unité rhétoromane (ladine)". Les auteurs manifestent, en traitant ce problème et les apports scientifiques y ayant trait, non seulement une certaine propension à nier catégoriquement la théorie ascolienne de /'unité (typologique voire classificatoire) du rhétoroman (ladin) (et s'insèrent par là ouvertement dans la tradition anti-unitariste inaugurée et âprement défendue par Carlo Battisti), mais révèlent aussi - ce qui me semble être plus inquiétant encore - une insouciance voire ignorance surprenante vis-à-vis de l'outillage conceptuel, terminologique, méthodique et methodologique de la pensée classificatoire telle qu'elle a cours dans beaucoup de secteurs de la linguistique contemporaine, parmi lesquels figure aussi - depuis Jean Séguy et Henri Guiter - la géolinguistique quantifiante ou dialectométrie.

Abstract:
The article presents the archival work carried out by Giuliana Clara at the Ladin Micurá de Rü Institute, during her Master of Arts degree course (LM-89). She was assigned to catalogue 128 documents from the Ciastel Colz - Granciasa of La Villa dating from the period between 1651 and 1941. These documents are in the private property of the De Grandi brothers, who entrusted them to the Istitut Ladin Micurá de Rü for archiving. They can be consulted online in the catalogue Archif Ciastel Colz - Granciasa – Coleziun privata Maria Pescosta in which the date, the format, the title and the editing language of each individual document have been entered. The language varies between German, Italian and Ladin, one document was written in Latin. All documents, except one parchment, are written on paper. To ensure a proper preservation, they were placed in suitable document folders and stored in acid-proof archive storage boxes.

Abstract:
Cultural tourists have become increasingly interested in intangible cultural heritage and in minority, peripheral areas. This paper will focus on the ICH of minority communities, with a closer look at minority languages, considering the Ladin communities of South Tyrol (Italy). This study uses a qualitative methodology—16 semi-structured interviews with German- and Italian-speaking tourists in Val Pusteria, with a video presenting a real-life situation in Ladin. It reveals that, although culture is not the main motivation to travel to South Tyrol, tourists are fascinated by tangible and intangible aspects of the South Tyrolean culture, such as the architecture, traditional lifestyle, events, practices, dresses, and the language. What is particularly interesting is the role that cultural sustainability plays for the region: the successful maintenance of traditions, including the traditional languages—dialect and Ladin—are mentioned with affection. Tourism practitioners in Val Pusteria and the neighboring Ladin valleys should consider experiences in and with the Ladin language as fun and interesting for tourists but should also provide interpretational and educational support.

Abstract:
The Ladins of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol are an ethnic minority with an ancient history, located in the Dolomites Mountains, a place associated with extreme beauty and rugged land. Under the Italian Constitution, Ladins have acquired several legal rights connected with their language and history.Ladins have a history dating to the Roman Empire. Located in a strategic place, with Alpine valleys and mountain paths that connect the Italian Peninsula with Central Europe, several Germanic tribes after the end of the Roman Empire invaded and established themselves in the zone, enforcing their customs and laws. Those so-called “barbaric laws” together with Carolingian and Ecclesiastical law gave birth to a particular system of law during the Middle Ages.Afterward, Ladins became part of the Holy Roman Empire, and later, part of the House of Habsburg. During the aftermath of World War I, Italy obtained the region from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire in the peace treaty of Saint Germain-en-Laye of 1919.The Italian experience with the Ladins started soon after World War I with several publications taking the task of understanding the origins of their language and its people. Ever since, Italian interest in the Ladins has not ceased. In 1998 the Italian Constitutional Court recognized the Ladin people their right to be represented in regional institutions, answering to the historical and social reality of Alto Adige/Südtirol.Consequently, the legal resilience of the Ladins gives testimony of a long history of peaceful victories for their rights, associated with the Ladin language, in the context of judicial procedures, political participation, and legislation.In comparison, Ladins living in other regions of Italy like Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia have not reached the same level of autonomy and privileges as those in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol.

RESUMO Diante das inúmeras possibilidades de performances de gênero na linguagem, discutimos, neste artigo, a obra da escritora norte-americana Joy Ladin, mulher trans, judia, poetisa premiada e professora universitária, em cuja escrita observamos uma constante reelaboração do performar-se mulher, num continuum feminino. Na leitura dos poemas “It Like Me”, “The Poem and Me” e “Not Unlike” (LADIN, 2017), atentamos para a ocorrência do que a própria autora chama de trans poética e adotamos diferentes noções da teoria literária feminista e dos estudos de gênero, com destaque para o conceito de eu lírica (POUBEL, 2020). Nessa discussão, entendemos a escrita como espaço para acolher e expressar identidades que não são estáveis e nem semelhantes, demonstrando como as performances das eu líricas na poesia de Joy Ladin podem moldar variadas mulheres - autoproclamadas mulheres - no discurso e, a partir disso, mudar a direção na qual estas são vistas dentro e fora da linguagem.

Abstract In The Soul of the Stranger, Joy Ladin centers nonbinary gender expression in the first chapter of Genesis. Ladin articulates the opportunity for nonbinary gender categories by moving beyond the creation of the binary and focusing on Adam (humanity), who represents the whole of humanity. This review expands and creates an entry point for interreligious dialogue with African diasporic religions, by acknowledging humanity as a part of the interconnected balance of nature and recognizing the influence the Babylonian creation story, Enuma Elish, had on the the deep primordial oceanic chaos described as tehon in the Torah.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the lexical choices made by speakers of Ladin in describing the opening scene of Mayer’s (1969) Frog, where are you? in Ladin and in the other languages they learnt later in life (Italian, German and English). The focus of the investigation is on motion lexicalisation, which varies across languages in terms of preferred encoding patterns (Talmy 1985, 2000; Wälchli 2001). Relative frequencies are calculated for the variants occurring in the different languages, before turning to a qualitative discourse-analytic approach, which forms the core of the analysis. The results are discussed with reference to the fields of typology and cross-linguistic research. The analysed texts bring to the fore the necessity of distinguishing between national and regional idioms and the potential value of drawing cross-linguistic issues to the explicit attention of learners. Possible implications are considered with reference to the novel framework of Applied Language Typology (Filipović 2018)

Abstract:
This article shows how deixis and motion events prove to be ideal topics in the stimulation of reflection and enhancement of cross-linguistic awareness among South-Tyrolean speakers of Ladin, who learn English as a fourth language after Italian and German. The initial part of the article illustrates how a translation task that was focused on locative adverbials led students at upper-secondary school to recognise the extreme complexity of their own Ladin L1 adverbial system as compared to the more straightforward binary deictic system of English. The subsequent section shows how secondary-school and university students realised their difficulties in lexicalising motion events in English, arguably due to the different typological tendencies of other languages they learn or have learnt. The video clips that the study participants were asked to describe were subsequently integrated into multilingual and multimodal awareness-raising classes at primary school and in teacher education, where awareness-raising activities are fundamental.

Based on recently published works, this paper draws a comparison between the human and intellectual life of Valentino Dell’ANTONIO Monech and that of Er-manno ZANONER Gabana, beginning with the years of the poetic-literary com-munity that emerged in the post-war period and ending with the divergences that arose in the early 1960s around the “spelling question”. The analysis of the texts available today, supported by a series of still unpublished documents, provides an insight into the dynamics that distinguished the cultural development of the Ladin community in the second half of the 20th century. The result is an inter-pretation that allows us to fully understand and appreciate the importance of the contributions of two authors who both shared the commitment to elevate their mother tongue to the status of “literary language”, and who – despite their differences – contributed decisively to the rebirth of the Ladin consciousness in Val di Fassa.

This paper investigates the prosody of stylized calls of Badiot Ladin, a ­Rhaeto-Romance variety spoken in the Badia Valley (Eastern Alps). A Discourse Completion Task was used to elicit 108 utterances from six native speakers of Badiot. The results show that, from a phonetic point of view, the calling melody consists of a low F0 stretch, followed by a rise to high in the stressed syllable, a high plateau in pre-final unstressed syllables (in proparoxy­tones names only), and a mid-plateau in the final unstressed syllable, whose nucleus is considerably lengthened. After comparing the stylized intonation of Ladin with the same contour in other Romance languages, we argue that this contour can be represented phonologically as L+H* !H%, while the presence of the two plateaus can be explained by means of tonal spreading. We tentatively suggest that the final lengthening can be interpreted as the result of the presence of a prosodic mora aligned with the nucleus of the final syllable.

La bella rivista ladina, sempre alla stessa invidiabile altezza tecnica, offre nei due ultirni volurni diverso materiale di vario interesse; quanto alla lingua dei contributi, in entrambi i volurni il 75% dei testi è in tedesco (9 su 12 nel vol. XVII, 6 su 8 nel vol. XVIII), uno è in ladino, il resto in italiano. Come di consueto, al primo piano della nostra recensione saranno gli articoli di interesse linguistico e filologico.

AbstractObjectiveThe aim of the research is to study whether any differences exist in the rates and characteristics of suicide by ethnicity and sex in South Tirol, Italy.MethodsPsychological autopsy interviews were conducted for suicides who died between March 1997 and July 2006.Results332 individuals belonging to the three major South Tirolean ethnic groups (Germans, Italians, Ladins [Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language related to the Venetian and Swiss Romansh languages]) died by suicide. Around 23% of the victims had experienced suicidal behaviour among family members, and more than 31% of them had experienced trauma during their childhood. Germans were 1.37 times more at risk to commit suicide than Italians (95% CI: 1.04/1.80; z = 2.26, p < .05). 69% of the suicides had attended school for less than 8 years: Germans (OR = 4.62; 95% CI: 2.52/8.47; p < .001) and Ladins (OR = 11.24; 95% CI: 2.99/42.30; p < .001) were more likely to have lower education than Italians. There were several differences by ethnicity and sex but no sex-by-ethnicity interactions.ConclusionsThe study indicated that suicide, an alarming health and social problem in South Tirol, may require different preventive interventions for men and women and for those of different ethnicities.

Abstract:
In this report, two different machine translation approaches for the low-­resource Ladin of the Val Badia are presented and evaluated: a dictionary-based approach using Apertium and a phrase-based statistical approach using Moses. The experiments show that the statistical approach outperforms in-domain the dictionary-based one and can provide satisfactory translations. Out-of-­domain, on the other hand, both approaches deliver poor translations. Here, the dictionary-based approach offers the greater room for improvement with the available resources.
