Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe aim of the research is to study whether any differences exist in the rates and characteristics of suicide by ethnicity and sex in South Tirol, Italy.MethodsPsychological autopsy interviews were conducted for suicides who died between March 1997 and July 2006.Results332 individuals belonging to the three major South Tirolean ethnic groups (Germans, Italians, Ladins [Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language related to the Venetian and Swiss Romansh languages]) died by suicide. Around 23% of the victims had experienced suicidal behaviour among family members, and more than 31% of them had experienced trauma during their childhood. Germans were 1.37 times more at risk to commit suicide than Italians (95% CI: 1.04/1.80; z = 2.26, p < .05). 69% of the suicides had attended school for less than 8 years: Germans (OR = 4.62; 95% CI: 2.52/8.47; p < .001) and Ladins (OR = 11.24; 95% CI: 2.99/42.30; p < .001) were more likely to have lower education than Italians. There were several differences by ethnicity and sex but no sex-by-ethnicity interactions.ConclusionsThe study indicated that suicide, an alarming health and social problem in South Tirol, may require different preventive interventions for men and women and for those of different ethnicities.

Although Walter Belardi did not publish real dictionaries except for a Basic dictionary of applied informatics (2000), his work in the fields of lexicography and lexicology is extremely extensive. It stretches from the ancient Indo-European languages to the Romance languages, with specific attention paid to Sella Ladin, notably Gardenese. While tracing the path of Belardi’s lexicographical research, anyone will find reason to be fascinated. This article tries to follow Belardi’s itinerary up to its last stage – the books on Armenian –, looking for a focal point of a research while driven by untamed curiosity.

Abstract:
Abstract: The scientific portrayal of apes at the turn of the twentieth century functioned as a rich space to probe the border between humans and the nonhuman world and to rethink the tenets of evolution. To take up these themes, Nicaraguan author Hernán Robleto (1895–1968), whose theatrical and narrative work was otherwise characterized by a costumbrista realist style, turned to the speculative genres of science fiction and fantasy in his novel Una mujer en la selva (1936). Inspired by the jungle adventure fantasies of Edgar Rice Burroughs and by the hit Hollywood film King Kong (1933), Robleto's novel offers a surprising fable about a ladina woman who falls in love with a giant ape in Nicaragua's jungled Atlantic coast. The erotic interspecies encounter is ontologically transformative; after the death of her primate lover, the protagonist becomes a legendary ape woman who haunts the social body. Allegorically, the novel deploys the giant ape as a stand-in for the marginalized Afro-descendant peoples of Nicaragua's east coast. The problematic collapse of blackness into the figure of the ape underscores how ladino writers like Robleto struggled to write about Afro-Indigenous populations in realist terms. The abstraction of blackness into the figure of the ape is a racist reification of Black animality, but at the same time, the fantastical interspecies romance in Robleto's novel tentatively advocates for a non-normative model of national coupling grounded in the Atlantic coast.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper investigates the prosody of stylized calls of Badiot Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romance variety spoken in the Badia Valley (Eastern Alps). A Discourse Completion Task was used to elicit 108 utterances from six native speakers of Badiot. The results show that, from a phonetic point of view, the calling melody consists of a low F0 stretch, followed by a rise to high in the stressed syllable, a high plateau in pre-final unstressed syllables (in proparoxytones names only), and a mid-plateau in the final unstressed syllable, whose nucleus is considerably lengthened. After comparing the stylized intonation of Ladin with the same contour in other Romance languages, we argue that this contour can be represented phonologically as L+H* !H%, while the presence of the two plateaus can be explained by means of tonal spreading. We tentatively suggest that the final lengthening can be interpreted as the result of the presence of a prosodic mora aligned with the nucleus of the final syllable.

Abstract:
Abstract Romance texts dating from the beginning of the 17th century are relatively rare in South Tyrol, but also in the Ladin valleys of Badia and Gardena, because the administration of these two valleys preferred to use German. The few examples of the use of Romance in the Ladin valleys therefore deserve special attention: on the one hand, because they allow conclusions to be drawn on the degree of multilingualism at the time; on the other hand, because their linguistic form is sometimes characterised by code-mixing, which manifests itself in particular in the fact that the formulaic parts of the texts are generally in (Northern) Italian, while the specifically content-related parts are often interspersed with Ladinisms. Such a text, more precisely the translation of the statutes of the jurisdiction of Enneberg (Marebbe) made in 1614 by the then chancellor Caspar d’Alfarëi from the original version codified in German in 1566, is edited here for the first time and analysed and commented on from a historical and linguistic point of view.

Abstract:
This work is a comprehensive study of the Sephardic Romancero and the historical, political and cultural elements that have contributed to the maintenance of the romance tradition in Sephardic life. The investigation begins with an overview of the past studies of the Sephardic Romancero and is followed by a survey of the history of the Sephardic Jews, both in Spain and in the Spanish Diaspora. An historical approach to the literary and linguistic aspects of the Sephardic Romancero follows and this approach is then applied to a musical study. The concluding chapter discusses the uses and functions of the romancero in the Sephardic world, particularly among the Sephardic women and the social processes that have contributed to the maintenance of the romance tradition in Sephardic culture.

Hack, Franziska Maria. "The syntax and prosody of interrogatives : evidence from varieties spoken in northern Italy." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:fae95d56-9fa0-48d5-af0d-7c629eed9c3e.

Full text
Abstract:
The vast majority of work on question formation examines interrogatives from the perspective of just one single component of grammar, usually the syntax or the prosody. The present dissertation offers a comprehensive account of question formation addressing both the syntax and the prosody of interrogatives and the interaction between these two components of grammar in signalling the question meaning of an utterance. The present work examines question formation on the basis of four genealogically related and geographically closely located Romance varieties spoken in northern Italy: Gherdëina, Badiot, Fascian and Nònes. Given that these varieties differ only with respect to certain microparametric values whereas others remain constant, they constitute an ideal research area to study the interaction between the syntax and the prosody in question formation. The syntactic and prosodic analyses proposed are based on new empirical data. The syntactic analysis is couched within the cartographic approach and the prosodic analysis is based on Autosegmental-Metrical Phonology. This dissertation is motivated by five main research goals:
  1. to provide a detailed description of the syntactic variation found in interrogatives in the four varieties Gherdëina, Badiot, Fascian and Nònes based on data collected by the author;
  2. to propose a unified syntactic analysis of the interrogatives;
  3. to offer a prosodic analysis of statements and questions providing new data from varieties not studied up to now in the literature;
  4. to establish the relation between the syntax and the prosody in question formation;
  5. to determine how the syntax and the prosody interact in providing clues to interrogative force for the listener as well as the speaker.
The main conclusions are as follows: The syntactic structure and the intonational tune are autonomous in question formation. Three aspects matter for interrogative clause typing: (i) syntactic marking, (ii) prosodic marking and (iii) tune-text-alignment.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to investigate some themes and narrative expedients presented in the novel named Quincas Borba, this research got its inspiration from the reading of the Romanesca tradition of the XIX (nineteenth) century performed by Franco Moretti, a critic who read the bourgeoisie’s seriousness (serious style) as an essential part of the novel in specific literatures. Because of that, the argumentative movement of this study is guided by the dialectical shift shown by Moretti. This reaserch is also guided by the contrast of Moretti’s ideas about the Romanesca literature of the nineteen century with analysis of Machado de Assis himself as a literary critic and literary criticism of Machado de Assis made by authors such as Augusto Meyer, Lúcia Miguel Pereira and Roberto Schwarz. Thus, Quincas Borba is interpreted in its various contexts, taking into account the author’s journey as a novelist and the broader landscape represented by the literature of authors such as Balzac and Eça de Queirós. These two aspects are considered because we intend to demonstrate that this Machado’s novel is structured using a misleading way in its apparent adjustment to the narrative expedients used in his time.

Abstract:

Okang'a, Nancy Achieng'. "A cosmopolitan national romance: a study of In Dependence by Sarah Ladipo Manyika." Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/23823.

Full text
Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. Johannesburg 2017
This research report uses In Dependence by Sarah Ladipo Manyika to demonstrate that African romance fiction is not necessarily escapist fantasy. It does this by focusing on the exploration of gender, racism, national and cultural identity in the post-colonial era in this novel that uses the romance template. The close textual analysis that is at the core of this reading is guided by an eclectic theoretical framework made out of several notions, the most important of which are: Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s idea of fiction as a form of language; the understanding that gender and race are socially constructed and can thus be remade or unmade; cosmopolitanism, and particularly the variety known as Afropolitanism. The research report is divided into five chapters. Chapter I, the introductory chapter, plots what the research report is about, explains how the research that led to the writing of the report was carried out, and locates the report in its appropriate intellectual contexts. Chapter II engages with the formal characteristics of In Dependence. Evidence is assembled to support the argument that in In Dependence Manyika creatively enhances the popular romance in the process forging a “fiction language” that she uses to communicate significant social and political messages in a rhetorically powerful manner. Chapter III analyzes the manner in which Manyika uses an inter-racial heterosexual relationship in the novel to explore gender and racism. The key argument pursued in the chapter is that in In Dependence Manyika challenges racialized patriarchal ideologies and envisions a cosmopolitan world in which the genders interact in a humane and fair manner. Chapter IV demonstrates that the story of an interracial romantic relationship that is used to structure the novel problematizes cultural identities and their attendant prejudices such as sexism and racism, and ultimately raises cosmopolitanism as the solution to the problem of intercultural interaction. Chapter V is the Conclusion. The arguments and conclusions of the core chapters of the research report – Chapter II, Chapter III and Chapter IV – are rehashed here. Also stated in this final chapter are the reading’s general conclusions on the novel and its contribution to the romance genre in the broader context of African literature.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to shed light on variation and change in the category of gerund in Ladin, Swiss Romansh and Friulan by tracing its development from Classical Latin and by contextualizing this diachrony within the central-eastern Alpine area. This work combines a solid overview of the current literature made of the existing grammars (for instance, Chiocchetti and Iori 2002; Zof 2008; Forni 2019) and the scientific production (for instance, Gruenert et al. 2008; Casalicchio 2013, but also De Roberto 2013; Vangaever 2018) with a multilevel empirical approach based on three corpora: a corpus of fieldwork data gathered through the administration of a translation task in the local Middle and High schools, a corpus of modern written texts incorporating newspaper articles, school texts, scientific articles and literary texts and lastly, a corpus of 17th-19th century texts. The final outcome allows the assessment of variation and contact-induced phenomena in synchrony drawing on the analysis of processes of change in diachrony.

In 1405 Christine de Pizan writes The Book of the City of Ladies to challenge the misogynist conceptions in The Romance of the Rose which derives from religious as well as classical sources. Christine argues that it is “virtue and morality” that makes one superior to the other, rather than sexual difference. Chaucer chooses a different way to present his concerns about whether women should be equal to men and be regarded as individuals. Chaucer thinks that denying women as individuals is inhuman; however, he is also troubled by the consequence if women are considered individuals. This thesis aims to present Chaucer’s ambiguous position on the “women question” through both of his protagonists in Troilus and Criseyde. In Troilus and Criseyde, Chaucer applies Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy to explain the relationship between Fortune and free will. According to Larry Scanlon, the function of Fortune in Troilus and Criseyde is to show the inevitability of the patriarchal power. On one hand, Criseyde is able to show her free will and ability to judge and act when she confronts Fortune/patriarchy in Chaucer’s Trojan story. On the other, all the choices Criseyde makes turn out to benefit men, the central power of patriarchy. On the contrary, Troilus as a part of the patriarchal system reveals that the hierarchy in the designation of Fortune/patriarchy is unbreakable. The reactions of Troilus and Criseyde to Fortune/patriarchy are gendered and disclose Chaucer’s hesitation about whether women should be free from the control of patriarchy. Chaucer’s ambiguous position on the “women question” not only shows his personal viewpoints but also represents the troubles and contradictions in the Middle Ages.

Abstract:
Felicitas Hoppe gives an introduction to the art of adapting medieval poetry that is in itself a poetic work. In 2008, Hoppe adapted Hartmann von Aue’s Arthurian romance Iwein into a highly successful young adult novel. She speaks about this experience and about the art of adapting medieval literature more generally: about encountering popular images of knights looking like ladies and about inverted gender roles in Hartmann’s romance; about history as produced by wishes; about finding Iwein by chance in a bookshop and being captivated by its beauty; about the romance’s surprising timelessness in its psychologically astute characterisation, its sensible rationality and its uncompromising morality; about the dialectic between boredom and adventure, between the desire to grow up and the fear of growing up in all good children’s books (and Arthurian romances); about the relationship between honour and masculinity in the romance code of values; about Iwein’s insistence on physicality; and about narrative techniques for modernising the text (including the introduction of Iwein’s companion, the lion, as the narrator). As a whole, Hoppe’s piece is a remarkably sensitive analysis of how and why aspects of medieval literature exert a fascination on creative minds. It compellingly demonstrates the wealth of insights that adaptors of medieval texts gain, which can complement and inspire those of literary critics.
