Abstract:

Consumers are increasingly interested in the nutritional composition of food and beverages, including beer. Therefore, nutritional values of beer became an integral part of the beer label information. It specifies, in particular, the energy value stipulated by law for beer with alcohol content lower than 1.2% vol.; in some cases also the concentration of carbohydrates, particularly sugars, proteins and salt. This work is a brief practical review of nutritional composition and energy value of different beer types and discusses the contribution of individual nutrients and alcohol to the total energy value. These values were measured in 172 samples of beer (24 pale lagers with the original gravity (OG) ranging from 9.00-10.99%, 45 pale lagers with the OG ranging from 11.00-12.99%, 18 dark lagers with the OG ranging from 11.00-12.99%, 9 special beers with the OG higher than 13%, 31 non-alcoholic beers, 19 beer-mixes, and 26 ciders). The highest average energy value was measured with light special beer (215 kJ/100 mL), cider (208 kJ/100 mL), and dark lager (181 kJ/100 mL). The average value of a standard Pils lager is 175 kJ/100 mL and 144 kJ/100 mL for beers with OG 9.00-10.99% and 11.00-12.99%, respectively. The lowest energy value is measured in non-alcoholic beer (75 kJ/100 mL). In common lagers, alcohol mostly contributes up to 60% to the total energy value, while the energy value of non-alcoholic beer is formed especially by carbohydrates (about 90%). The concentration of salt (sodium) is very low in beer (about 4 mg/100 mL) in comparison with the other food in general.

Abstract:

HPLC with amperometric detection was used to evaluate the reducing power of 23 beers and aqueous extracts of 17 barley malts. While brew pale malts were only slightly higher in electrochemical reducing capacity than natural barleys (about 1.3 g BHAE/kg), caramel malts with the colour of 60–450°EBC showed 7.5–17.2 g BHAE/kg. The superior reducing power of the darker caramel malts was partly due to the presence of a Maillard-derived 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-(4H)-pyran-4-one (DDMP), which was responsible for 21–55% of their electrochemical capacity. Among common brew malts, only the Munich type showed a significantly increased electrochemical capacity – 6.8 ± 0.8 g BHAE/kg. In addition to the malts, the brewing can also affect the electrochemical capacity of beers, which ranged from 0.4 ± 0.1 to 1.9 ± 0.3 g BHAE/l. Simple indigenous malt-derived phenolics were responsible for 48–57% of capacity in pale lagers and for 33–45% of it in dark and other specialty lagers. DDMP was not detected in most pale lagers, while it was responsible for up to 11% of the electrochemical capacity in dark and special beers. High-molecular-weight fraction (> 1kDa) of beers comprised 19–39% (pale lagers) and 14–21% (dark and special beers) of the capacity. The reducing power of malts and beers determined by the amperometric method was confirmed by a good correlation with the results of DPPH<sup>•</sup> scavenging assay.

Das Gebäude enthält Bausubstanz aus der Zeit vor dem Basler Erdbeben und liegt an einer Schlüsselstelle der Basler Altstadt, am Abhang des Petersbergs gegen den Fischmarkt hin. Die mehrgeschossigen Kellerräume wurden als Lagerhaus genutzt. In den untersten Etagen ist das Innere weitgehend original erhalten und weist zweigeschossige spätromanische Holzsäulen auf. Besonderheiten in der Gestaltung des Hauses sind eine grosse strebepfeilerartige Stützmauer mit Spitzbogendurchgang, ein tonnengewölbter Vorraum zu den Kellern und ein spitzbogig überwölbter Annexraum, der ev. als Fragment von einer nicht zu Ende geführten Erweiterung zeugt. Der ursprüngliche Bau wurde gemäss Dendrochronologie in den Jahren 1260-1275 erstellt. Vom ersten Obergeschoss bis zum Dach wurde das Haus 1421/22 erneuert oder ergänzt und mit dem heutigen, einseitig gewalmten Dach gedeckt (nach dem Basler Stadtbrand von 1417).

Abstract:

The work is devoted to the analytical simulation of the combined plates calculation. The mentioned plates have the circular form and they consist of separate parts with differentlaws of thickness variation. These sections may be made from the same or from differentmaterials. The material can be homogeneous or nonhomogeneous, isotropic or anisotropic. In the places of the separate sections conjugation the construction’s thickness can be continuous or discontinuous. The construction under study is subjected to an action of bending loads. Below the analytical method for the similar constructions’ computation is suggested. This method is based on the use of the theory of the special functions, in particular, Lagerr’s orthogonal polynomials.

Covered smut of barley, caused by Ustilago hordei, has the potential to cause significant losses under organic production systems, particularly for hulless barley. The objectives of this investigation were to identify sources of resistance to covered smut and to study the inheritance of resistance and allelic relations between resistant barley lines. Hulled barley breeding lines and cultivars TR640, Q21861, TR244, and CDC Helgason were identified as sources of resistance to covered smut based on screening for 3–5 yr in the field and twice in the greenhouse. No hulless sources with strong resistance were identified indicating that there is a need to transfer resistance to hulless barley. Inheritance of covered smut resistance in the hulled barley line TR244 was studied using a hulless × hulled barley population screened with a mixture of U. hordei isolates. A single major resistance gene was identified in TR244. Many hulless lines in this population showed good resistance to covered smut indicating that resistance can be transferred to hulless lines. Allelic studies indicated that the resistance gene in TR244 is different from that in the resistant lines Q21861 and TR640. Key words: Barley, Ustilago hordei, resistance, hulless, covered smut

Abstract:

AbstractPre-encounter ground-based thermal observations of NEA 25143 Itokawa at 10μm led to a size prediction of 520(±50) × 270(±30) × 230(±20)m, corresponding to an effective diameter of DTPMeff= 318m (Müller et al.2005). This is in almost perfect agreement with the final in-situ results 535 × 294 × 209m (DHayabusaeff= 320m; Demura et al.2006). The corresponding radar value, based on the same shape model (Kaasalainen et al.2005), were about 20% too high: 594 × 320 × 288m (DRadareff= 379m; Ostro et al.2005). The very simple N-band observations revealed a surface which is dominated by bare rocks rather than a thick regolith layer. This prediction was nicely confirmed by the Hayabusa mission (e.g., Fujiwara et al.2006; Saito et al.2006). The ground-based measurements covered three different phase angles which enabled us to determine the thermal properties with unprecedented accuracy and in excellent agreement with the results from the touch-down measurements (Okada et al.2006; Yano et al.2006). These thermal values are also key ingredients for high precision Yarkovsky and YORP calculations (mainly the rotation slowing) for Itokawa (e.g., Vokrouhlický et al.2004; Vokrouhlický et al.2005). In addition to the above mentioned properties, our data allowed us to derive the surface albedo and to estimate the total mass. We believe that with our well-tested and calibrated radiometric techniques (Lagerros 1996,1997,1998; Müller & Lagerros 1998, 2002; Müller 2002) we have tools at hand to distinguish between monolithic, regolith-covered and rubble pile near-Earth objects by only using remote thermal observations. This project also emphasizes the high and so far not yet fully exploited potential of thermophysical modeling techniques for the NEA/NEO exploration.

Abstract:

AbstractThis exploratory study aims to identify the factors that prevent companies to find suitable candidates for private fellowships and internships: what students believe to be the causes, how would they explain these and which stakeholders should be involved to eliminate them. Data collection based on a sample of 18 engineering students that attended a company presentation inviting applications for private fellowship and student practice. Opinions were expressed in writing prior to structured interviews and group discussions. Limitations to this study are the relatively small sample size (n =18) and reliance on self-report measures. Information related causes were perceived by the students to lead their decisions, followed by lack of self-confidence of successful application for the grant. Respondents were classified in „Doers”, „Wishers “and „Lagers”. Universities must reinvent themselves in order to provide students with better knowledge and confidence on the job market, measured through a larger number of doers, which could become role models for wishers. Such process may generate a “critical mass” or tipping point in the transformation of a significant number of “wishers and lagers”. Whilst some of the students’ opinions are subjective, cooperation between universities and companies must continue to improve in order to enhance learning and better prepare students for their future careers.

The 2015 election to the Danish Folketing saw yet another change of government . Despite gains for the liberal-conservative Venstre, the incumbent centre-right government led by Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Venstre) lost its majority due to substantial losses of the Danish People’s Party and the Liberal Alliance . The new Danish government is a social democratic single party minority government led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen . This government is tolerated by the Social Liberals, the Socialist People’s Party as well as the left radical Unity List and constitutes the clearest left-wing majority since the 1971 election . The centre-right camp was split on the tax issue during the whole election period and punished at the ballots despite a sound economy and policy gains on immigration . The Social Democrats benefited from their more restrictive immigration policy by gaining votes from the centre-right parties . They now command the first left-wing majority since the turn of the millennium . However, the ideological differences on immigration policy within the leftist camp will not make governing easier for Frederiksen’s single party minority government . Moreover, the new party “Nye Borgerlige” is the first party to the right of the Danish People’s Party since 1998 in the new Folketing that now consists of ten parties . Lagerh. from Salisbury, MD, identified in greenhouse tests as specific to yellow nutsedge, was field evaluated for biological control of yellow nutsedge over a 2-yr period. Treatments included all combinations ofP. canaliculataand 0.3 or 0.6 kg ai/ha benzaton. Disease development was reduced 50% by treatment with bentazon, compared withP. canaliculataalone.P. canaliculatareduced tuber recovery by 44%. Phytotoxicity was significantly higher from the rust treatments than controls. Treatment with P.canaliculatadid not affect the number of shoots/m2.

Abstract:

This study tests the impact of corporate venturing (CV) forms on the sustainability of pioneering advantage. Using the Miles and Covin 2002 classification of CV forms, this study shows that performance of early entrants is twice as much higher than performance of lagers. However, the effect of parent support prior to entry is substantially larger than the pioneering effect. Companies entering a market via direct external CV perform twenty five to fifteen times better than companies entering via direct internal CV. Hence, the sustainability of first mover advantage is challenged in the face of new entrants with superior resources.

Abstract:

The genetics of virulence of two Ustilago hordei (Pers.) Lagerh. races were examined on the resistant barley cultivar Trebi. Tetrad analysis was used to identify segregation patterns. The segregation patterns from the F1 teliospores revealed a single major gene for virulence with high levels of smut inherited as a dominant trait. Parents T1 and T4 were identified as homozygous dominant and homozygous recessive, respectively. Analysis of the F1 teliospores also revealed variation that could not be accounted for by either a one- or two-gene hypothesis. Further analysis of selected sporidia indicated that several genes modified the effects of the major gene.

Historisch uninteressant sind sie dennoch nicht, wie André Postert und Rainer Orth zeigen. In ihnen spiegeln sich die letzten Rückzugsgefechte und Hoffnungen des jungkonservativen Lagers, die taktische Schläue Hitlers und - erneut - die Naivität von Papens, die allerdings nicht umstandslos mit Feigheit und Unterwürfigkeit gleichgesetzt werden kann. Ganz einfach war seine Lage nach der „Marburger Rede“ vom 17. Juni und nach dem „Röhm-Putsch“ ja nicht.

Abstract:

Previous genetic analysis of Ustilago hordei (Pers.) Lagerh. indicated that virulence was modified by polygenes. The analysis was extended in this study to include examination of this variation on both the susceptible barley cultivar Odessa and the resistant cultivar Trebi. Generally, higher percentages of smutted plants were observed on 'Odessa' than on Trebi'. The rankings of dikaryons were similar on both cultivars and correlations of rankings of dikaryons between cultivars were statistically significant (rs = 0.875 and rs = 0.78). Interactions between haploid genotypes also were observed which greatly enhanced the percentage of smutted plants. Rather than virulence being dominant as reported in the previous analysis, all segregation patterns from these experiments indicated that virulence was recessive.

Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building has long occupied a central place in the history of modern architecture. In The Wainwright Building: Monument of St. Louis's Lager Landscape, Paula Lupkin reexamines the canonical “first skyscraper” as a different type of monument: the symbolic center of St. Louis's “lager landscape.” Viewed through the lenses of patronage and local history, this ten-story structure emerges as the white-collar hub of one of the city's most important cultural and economic forces: brewing. Home to the city's brewery architects and contractors, a brewing consortium, and related real estate and insurance companies, the building, as Ellis Wainwright conceived it, served as the downtown headquarters of the brewing industry. Echoing the brewery stock house as well as cold storage structures and ornamented with motifs of lager's most expensive ingredient, hops, the building's design incorporated both the natural and technological elements of brewing. Analyzing the Wainwright Building as part of a lager landscape adds new dimension and significance to Sullivan's masterpiece.

The barley – Ustilago hordei (Pers.) Lagerh. system was examined in selection experiments. Three populations were formed with teliospores originating from 15 different dikaryons (5 dikaryons per population). The teliospores were heterozygous for a gene governing virulence to the barley cultivar Trebi. Each population was subdivided such that one subpopulation was selected on 'Trebi' and the other was simultaneously selected on 'Odessa', partially resistant and susceptible cultivars, respectively. Changes in the virulence allele frequency were monitored during each generation of selection for each population. There were no major changes in percentage of smutted plants that could be attributed to the cultivar on which selection took place. Increases of the virulent phenotype were observed for all populations regardless of cultivar. Whether these changes were the result of changes of allele frequency or other factors is not known.

Durch ihre Größe füllen die Komponenten die azetabulären Defekte jedoch nur aus und tragen somit nicht zur Regeneration des knöchernen Lagers bei. Aufgrund dessen sind gerade bei diesem Implantattyp die Langzeitüberlebensraten von großem Interesse. Der vorliegende Beitrag diskutiert die zu diesem Thema vorliegende, relevante Literatur und geht auf die Operationstechnik und implantatspezifische Besonderheiten von Jumbocups ein. Jumbocups zeigen ein gutes Langzeitüberleben wobei dennoch die aseptische Lockerung die häufigste Revisionsursache und die Luxation die häufigste Komplikation darstellt. Durch die Entwicklung von alternativen meist modularen Revisionssystemen haben Jumbocups in der täglichen Praxis an Bedeutung verloren. Sie sind aber definitiv eine Benchmark für Neuentwicklungen im Bereich der Hüftendoprothetik.

Dabei wurde auf rechtliche und erinnerungskulturelle Diskurse aus dem Kulturkampf des 19. Jahrhunderts – und auf solche, die dazu Bezug nehmen – verwiesen. Diese Verweise werden in einem (partiellen) Close Reading des Kommentars zur geplanten (letztlich aber nicht realisierten) Änderung der basellandschaftlichen Kantonalverfassung erörtert und in den konfligierenden Narrativen des liberalen und des konservativen Lagers verortet. Dabei wird der Kommentar als Dokument gelesen, in welchem spezifische Geschichtsbilder, politische Identitäten und das Recht als sozial konstruierte Entitäten verwoben werden – und in welchem spezifische Konstruktionen und Reifikationen von Identität und Alterität angelegt sind.

Cystosori of Spongospora subterranea (Wallr.) Lagerh., with cysts at different stages in development, were found on the surface of a potato powdery scab lesion in situ at harvest time and are described using light and transmission electron microscopy. The resting cyst cytoplasm has a five-layered envelope separating it from periplasmic space and is contained within a wall consisting of three layers (W1, W2, and W3). Protuberances on the outer surface of the cysts are outgrowths of the outermost (W1) wall layer. The differentiation of a primary zoospore within each cyst is marked by a reorganisation of the cytoplasmic envelope, the appearance of multivesicular bodies in the cytoplasm, and a germ pore with a thickened W3 wall rim. The ultrastructure of the cysts is compared with the resting spore and encysted primary zoospore of Plasmodiophora brassicae.

Abstract The focus of the presented research is attitude and loyalty to two brands of beer produced by the Carlsberg Group – Tuborg and Carlsberg. Both beers are lagers. The Carlsberg Group markets Tuborg as a more premium brand, and it also aims to promote it to women. Unlike in the Netherlands with one brand – Heineken and unlike in the Czech Republic with many well-known brands by a multitude of producers, the Danish case gives a unique opportunity to investigate if customers truly prefer one of two brands or are approximately equally low with regards to both brands as it is produced by the same company and tastes very similarly (if not the same). The survey was conducted in Denmark. Respondents were Danish (not international) university students; such selection was done in order to ensure familiarity of respondents with both brands.
