Full textProduction to customer order usually requires keeping a supply warehouse. Increased customer demands for short lead-times require that materials must be in stock. This result in increasing stock levels in a company leads to more capital tied up and simultaneously leads to poorer yields. To avoid keeping a large storage warehouse whilst keeping a good service requires an effective inventory control. The purpose of this project is to find out how the demand looks like in the current situation of the company and to develop an appropriate forecasting method and calculation model against a certain pace for inventory control. The methods mentioned in this work are the ABC analysis, calculation of safety stock and forecasting methods. The results from this work will answer the objectives of the project aims. A variety of analyzes and experiments shall be used to investigate what type of forecasting method that the company should use. The methods and theories raised in the report also aims to be used by similar companies. The aim of the selected forecasting method is also to lead to a better base, from which better forecast precision is one part in order to improve the inventory management. This has, as far as possible, been put in relation to the working methods used in the company today. Some of the work has been to find out how much demand changes during the lead times, i.e. from the ordering of raw material until the material is in the raw material stock. This has also been used to compare forecasting methods against the present approach. Because the company wants to expand its production, a calculation model has also been developed. This model indicates the inventory level to a desired pace, i.e. demand level.

Full textRight product, in the right place and at the right time are important aspects of a producing company. There are different inventory control methods a company can use to ensure these aspects which this paper will discuss. The purpose of this essay is to describe Thomas Cook Airlines inventory control, and from this, the following two problem definitions have been developed: (1) which inventory control methods are used today and (2) how inventory control can be streamlined using an MRP sys-tem. We have deepened ourselves in different inventory control methods, such as the ordering point, economic order quantity, and ABC classification, explaining different ways how to control inventory. We have also presented a theory about MRP systems which indicates that companies with MRP systems can minimize their inventory level and reduce the risk of inven-tory overflow. If the concept’s LEAN and JIT are to be added to the companies’ strategies more advantages will obtain. In this paper, our empirical material is based on interviews, ob-servations and text documents. In our conclusion, we found that Thomas Cook Airlines partly works with inventory control. The company wants to maintain a high level of service, but it implies a high inventory value which is not desirable. The company has an established ABC classification, but it is not used to a sufficient extent. We present two MRP systems, RELEX and AFP, who gives a number of benefits such as suggested orders. Also, they no longer need to generate different reports from different systems to Excel. Thomas Cook Airlines inventory control can be more effec-tive with an MRP system. Based on the concepts of LEAN and JIT, we also consider that a supplier and article reduction may be appropriate.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate how to achieve efficient inventory management of spare parts in the health care sector. Methodology – To meet the purpose of the study a case study has been conducted in collaboration with Hjälpmedelscentralen at Länssjukhuset Ryhov in Jönköping. The empirical data have been obtained by methods such as interviews and documentation studies. By analysing empirical data in comparison with the theoretical framework the findings of the study was generated. Findings – Initially, the findings of the study implies that aspects such as usage frequency, annual dollar volume and criticality are important to consider in inventory management of spare parts in the health care sector. Usage frequency and annual dollar volume have been used as criteria for an assortment wide ABC-classification which resulted in three segments. One of these segments, customer order, has a very low usage frequency. Therefore it was considered appropriate to only order these spare parts when an actual need has occurred. The inventory management of the remaining segments should be carried out with a reorder point system. However, there is a certain difference regarding the intensity of the management between the two segments. Furthermore, it’s appropriate to conduct a classification based on criticality. This should ensure that critical spare parts get more attention and hence decreasing the risk of shortage. Implications – In this study, it has been determined how to achieve efficient inventory management of spare parts in the health care sector. For those who aim to do this it’s necessary to identify the aspects that are most important for the particular business. Furthermore, it’s important that these businesses ensure the availability of necessary data. Research limitations – The conducted case study was designed as a holistic single case study. Since businesses differ from each other it would have been appropriate to conduct a multiple case study. As a result of this, a higher degree of generalisation could have been achieved.

Full textGNT Group is a Nordic/Baltic wholesaler that distributes products in the IT, entertainment and home electronics sector. GNT is facing problems with inaccurate inventory levels which can lead to unnecessarily high inventory carrying costs or lost sales. Currently the decisions about when and how many to order are made somewhat arbitrarily by the responsible personnel. Their decisions are based only on some brief sales history and on experience.
GNT wants to develop its ERP system to be able to support the purchaser in these and other related decisions. The purpose of this thesis is to give suggestions to what decisions the ERP system should support and how these decisions can be made.
The three main tasks in this thesis are to suggest how to calculate the optimal order quantity, how to calculate the optimal ordering point and how to decide whether it can be profitable to store an article in only one of GNT’s warehouses.
The suggested solution is based on a volume value/demand frequency classification which also takes an item’s life cycle characteristics into consideration. For the different classes suitable calculations and decisions are suggested concerning the three main tasks and issues related to them.

In a small company there is a risk that the management focuses so much on the core business that other administrative tasks are ignored. For example, there is a risk that the company does not control its inventories efficiently.
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the valuing and control of the inventory in a small retail company with a store and, where appropriate, give suggestions for improvement.
We have studied laws and recommendations regarding inventory valuation and other literature regarding inventory control in retail companies. Additionally we have interviewed representatives for a typical small retail company.
The investigated company does comply with applicable laws and recommendations, but not much more. Furthermore, the company uses mostly feel and experience in its inventory control. The company does not use formal inventory control in any great extent, if any. We have some suggestions for improvements in this regard.

Full textAbstract Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding of how to control inventory when the demand varies. To achieve the purpose, the goal is to create a process that facilitates inventory management at varied demand. This is feasible by answering following questions: 1. Which methods of safety stock calculation and inventory control are appropriate and take varied demand in consideration? 2. How is the inventory carrying cost and ordering cost affected by different methods of controlling inventory when demand varies? Method - Information about controlling inventory at varied demand was gathered through literature studies. A case study was carried out to apply the theoretical framework on empirical data from the business case. The empirical data was collected through interviews and documentation studies, which provided a basis for calculation and further analysis. Findings - SERV2 is considered as an appropriate method for safety stock calculations since it takes the number of occasions for shortages into account and provides a good measurement of the stock availability over time. The dynamic inventory control methods Silver & Meal and Wagner-Whitin can handle variations in demand better than order point systems. Calculations show that Wagner-Whitin generates the lowest total costs in the majority of cases. A process is established to facilitate inventory management at varied demand. Implications - Within this study it is shown that using dynamic inventory control methods can reduce inventory control costs when demand varies. Nonetheless it is important to have persuasive input to generate reliable results. Limitations - The dynamic inventory control methods balance order cost with inventory carrying costs to find the most economic option from an inventory control perspective. It is not always the best solution from a holistic perspective since changed order quantities can affect other parts of the material flow. The established process charts are based on chosen solution, which limits its application to businesses with similar conditions as the case study. Keywords - Varied demand, inventory control, safety stock calculation, inventory management

Full textThis study was conducted at Nefab, which is company of interest in the case study. They are a pallet manufacturer and they customize their pallets after the costumers need. Because this study is focuses on inventory management and raw material procurement, and the raw material in this study is wood. Nefab uses a number of suppliers i.e. multiple sourcing, and they believe that they have long-term relationships with most of the suppliers. The purpose of this study is to find a approach for a small company in the packaging industry to reduce their purchasing costs and storage costs. The methods the study uses are mainly interviews where the form of the interview is semi-structured. In addition to the two interviews was a literature study conducted. This chapter also discusses the study’s use of primary and secondary data. Finally, the method chapter also contains a section called methodical criticism which contains the ability of the study to be recreated and how valid the study is. This section illustrates if the study can be generalized and which ethical principles may affect the collection of data. The theoretical framework presents a number of themes which concern stock management, simple and double ABC classification. The biggest part of this chapter is the section called visibility in warehouse, and it concerns RFID technology, but mainly barcodes. It also concerns business systems because there must be a system where the code can be read and thus linked to an existing product. Segmentation plays a major role in this report and especially in the practical contribution, where the segmentation involves both two simple ABC analysis and a double analysis. These analyzes provide the basis for reducing the number of lengths Nefab buys, but it is more thickness of the trees. The two interviews conducted by the study meant that there was a lack if both traceability and visibility in respondents’ stock. Where there is manual handling of deliveries and on the delivery of articles. This is something the study group believes is the next step in the industry, but as most subcontractors of these companies are privately owned sawmills, hence it can be an expensive investment for both sawmills and companies such as Nefab. Hence there must be an incentive for both parties to make such an investment.

Full textBackground: Inventory control is different activities related to how a warehouse is managed. The management of inventory has a big impact on a company's profitability as it manages the activities that concern the inventory and thus has an affect on the tied up capital. However, inventory control is nothing that can be rushed through, since many activities must match. The inventory control becomes even more complex when companies deals with volatile raw materials. When it comes to inventory control of these types of products, it is important to take these changes into account, in order to find the most optimal inventory control. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate which consequences that occurs when Alutrade does not take volatile purchase prices into account, furthermore to identify which inventory control methods, and thus inventory control policy, that is suitable to apply when purchase prices are volatile to optimize and achieve a cost-effective inventory turnover. Method: The thesis is based on a positivistic and deductive approach. The study has a qualitative research method but contains both qualitative and quantitative data. The data has been collected through unstructured and semi-structured interviews, as well as mail interviews. Results: As Alutrade currently does not take the price volatility on the aluminum market into much account a number of consequences arise, which means that the company's inventory control is negatively affected. In order to avoid these consequences a inventory control policy, which takes the price volatility into account, has been developed. This policy is based on an ABC classification and contains inventory control methods such as modified EOQ, reorder point system for volatile purchase prices, safety stock as an estimated number of demand days and safety stock calculated from a desired service level. Using the developed inventory control policy, Alutrade can avoid the consequences and achieve the cost savings that are shown.

Full textThe purchasers at Saab Support & Services are located at six different sites in Sweden. Diverse businesses throughout the sites affect the logistics process and increase the difficulty to use a shared strategy for inventory control. In Tannefors, which is the largest purchasing site the strategy for inventory control and logistics mindset is quite well developed and the largest problem is that the planning system isn’t considered to be user friendly. Remaining sites have poorly developed strategies for inventory control resulting in a negative impact on their businesses which can be seen in lack of planning, costly urgent freights and a short sighted mindset. To meet these challenges this study has developed a new strategy for inventory control for the two largest purchasing sites, Tannefors and Nyköping, which can function as a baseline if the strategy is to be expanded to the remaining purchasing sites. The process of developing a new inventory control strategy started with performing a classification of the studied spare parts and then combining the classes that can be controlled similarly into groups with a shared service level. Thereafter order points based on the determined service level where calculated for each article. Finally a recommended order quantity was calculated based on the articles economic order quantity. The study also incorporated the variable cover time into the quantity decision to ensure that the recommended quantities were reasonable and practically usable. Too large cover times increase the risk of the warehouses getting full, spares getting lost in the warehouses and the spare parts becoming useless due to a change of business. Saab Support & Services wishes to have a strategy for inventory control that has a high service level against customer, which is in line with the business model. Designing an appropriate strategy became complex due to the nature of the characteristics of spare parts such as low consumption and fortuitous frequency. Furthermore the decisions get even harder due to the insecurity of the business length and the fact that costly express freights often are required to prevent an otherwise air serviceable aircraft to stand by on ground in the wait for a spare part. Since a fraction of the spare parts accounted for a large amount of the requested articles only these parts were given a classification in the study. From this observation one can draw the conclusion that a relatively high service level can be attained by focusing on inventory control for just these classified parts. Although, achieving a service level of close to 100% would become very expensive due to the huge amount of spare parts. In addition to the strategy for inventory control a software tool showing among others historical data, classification, order point and recommended order quantity has been developed to aid the purchasers in the planning procedure. This process consisted of mapping up the decisions made in the current purchasing process to determine if a purchase is necessary and analysing the currently used software. An analysis of the results was performed and a model of the new system was constructed followed by development of the system as a quick report in the enterprise resource planning system. The developed software tool is seen as necessary to enable a switch to an order point system. Since the tool has been developed in cooperation with the purchasers it´s considered to be well adapted to the business. The tool will increase usability as well as create transparency in the organisation and thereby facilitate cooperation between sites.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of the study is to identify individual parameters on articles to enable optimized inventory management in a company with customer-controlled production. Three questions have been formulated to answer the purpose. Which parameters need to be considered to optimize inventory control? Which parameters can be identified in a company with customer order driven production? How can identified items be used in inventory management? Method – The study was initiated with a feasibility study to elucidate the problem of the subject and its context. The preliminary study in combination with a literature study contributed to the creation of the purpose and formulation of the study's three issues. Furthermore, the study is designed according to the type of one-case design where the interview was used as a data collection method. The interview contributed to qualitative primary data where the purpose was to illustrate key people's knowledge of the subject studied. Findings – Identifying parameters that are important for optimizing profitability and inventory management in a company is challenging. The problem with this lies in identifying the right parameters adapted for a company's production method and elucidating how these should be implemented. This study addresses important parameters for customer order controlled environment regarding various functions of a company. The result describes these parameters and shows how the parameters are advantageously used in an ABC classification to control the layer effectively. Implications – The subject area of inventory management is well explored in existing literature, which contributes to less space to generate new knowledge in the area. Despite this, this study contributes to new knowledge, which strengthens current research on inventory management in customer-order-driven environments. This then-collected theory in combination with empirics opens up new facts to take into account. Limitations – The study comprises only one case company, which in addition affects the generalizability of the study. As the study focuses on inventory management based on five functions of the fall company, the study cannot be fully generalized to other similar companies. Furthermore, limitations can be found in the data collection where only specifically selected persons were interviewed which may have influenced the study's results.
Otterheim, Gustav, and Sarah Rosenquist. "Vad kom först, ägget eller förpackningen? : En studie om lagerstyrning hos Gotlandsägg AB." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för ekonomistyrning och logistik (ELO), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-53242.
Full textBackground: Companies are constantly seeking new ways to design more efficient supply chains and, to ensure profitability, seeks to reduce the costs of production, transportation and inventory. Because inventory related costs account for a large part of the company's total logistics costs, it has come to be the focus of many cost reduction activities. To reduce costs related to inventory while obtaining a desired service level is referred to as inventory control. One way to achieve better inventory control is to locate waste that may exist in the current control. This can be done by establishing a process mapping in order to identify and minimize or eliminate the waste that was identified by giving suggestions of improvement. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe Gotlandsägg’s current inventory control of packages for eggs and what costs it results in. Possible waste is then identified in the current inventory control of packages to further on present suggestions on how the inventory control can improve with the goal of reducing costs while still achieve a desired service level. Method: The following essay is a qualitative case study, performed on the company Gotlandsägg AB's packaging plant in Ruda. The study has adopted a deductive standpoint with a positivistic approach. The collection of data contains both primary data, which have been collected through unstructured, structured and semi-structured interviews with staff of Gotlandägg, and secondary data that have been collected from Gotlandsäggs intern systems, Linnaeus University's database and other available literature. v Conclusion: The study has described Gotlandsäggs current replenishment process of their packages for eggs by establishing a process mapping and determined the definable annual cost of inventory management. The current inventory control leads to that the packages are stored for a long time and therefore results in large amounts of tied up capital which increases inventory carrying costs. The process mapping further defined waste in a form of activity that did not create any value to the process, the use of manual inventory levels, as well as waste in the form of waiting for the digital inventory balance and manual calculations to be made before ordering could be performed. Gotlandsägg’s excessive inventory was also identified as a type of waste and the reasons for the types of waste was presented in different Ishikawa-diagrams. The suggestions for improvements concluded to eliminate the manual inventory levels and to allow direct access of the digital inventory levels at the packaging plant in Ruda. By investing in a system that is linked to the inventory levels, where calculations for ordering are made automatically, the waste of waiting could be minimized. An excel model was developed as an improvement until investments in an automated system can be made. For the refills of items, its recommended to control the packaging types in different ways but that all articles should be ordered in minimum order quantity as far as possible. As regarding transport, Gotlandsägg should continue to order full transports but with lower quantities of each article. An ABC-classification was therefore carried out to facilitate the control and to focus on the articles responsible for the most tied up capital. It was also recommended to adopt a higher inventory rate to avoid excessive inventory in the future.

Full textAB Sandvik Coromant is a world leading manufacturer of inserts and tools designed for industrial metal cutting. The insert plant in Gimo is Sandvik Coromants largest manufacturing unit of inserts. GHMP is a department that supplies the insert plant in Gimo, and other manufacturing units around the world, with press tools. In recent years GHMP have had a lack of focus regarding inventory control. In practice this has led to a situation where the sole purpose of the production inventory is to guarantee stock availability. The lack of active work with stock keeping and inventory control has led GHMP to suspect that inventory levels are unnecessarily high and that purchasing patterns do not reflect the actual usage of articles. In order to reduce the inventory at GHMP this project has been initialized. The goal of the project is to reduce capital tied up in production stock by 50 % and to improve the inventory control. In order to succeed with the project, a software with a built in optimization model, have been developed. The software is designed to present recommended order points and order quantities in order to reduce costs of purchasing and stock keeping. The software simulates purchasing and stock keeping over historical data of usage for articles. The financial performance of different purchasing patterns is compared and the best alternative is selected to be recommended for the department. The optimization model includes articles that have been used during the last year. For articles that have not been used during the last year a different approach is taken. For these articles no patterns for purchasing is suggested. Instead a recommended stock level is presented. The recommended stock level is to be seen as a safety stock in case an article is brought back to production. This safety stock is supposed to cover usage until new deliveries of the article arrives. In line with the mission of reducing inventory the possibilities for standardization of articles with many similar variants have been analyzed. The analysis reveals that a standardization of core pin blanks during the last year would have led to 11 less orders and 40 less variants in stock. This would have led to a decrease in average stock value 13 %. The standardization would on the other hand have led to 55 operations of regrinding during the last year. The costs for the regrinding would have been ... SEK.For articles that have been used during the last year the capital tied up in production stock can be reduced by 37 %. For articles that have not been used during the last year the capital tied up in production stock can be reduced by 85 %. In total this represents a reduction in average stock value by 57 %.

Full textThe study was conducted during the spring -18 as a graduate work at Husqvarna Group towards the company's purchasing department. The authors study the master’s program Logistics as part of their MSc in Engineering at Linköping University. The main subjects of the study are purchasing and inventory management, focusing on the latter part and intended to reduce capital tied up without increasing overall costs through a change. Security stock, order quantities and consignment storage were the three key areas investigated and four different scenarios were created within these. In addition to cost and tied up capital, the scenarios were also evaluated according to how they affected the flexibility of Husqvarna. The two scenarios investigated in security stock were the service level method Scenario 1 - SERV1 and Scenario 2 - Percentage of demand during lead time. Within order quantities, a scenario based on economic order quantity, Scenario 3 - EOK, was investigated. Qualitatively, a consignment inventory was also investigated through Scenario 4 - Consignment storage. Interviews and information from the company's business systems have been the key sources of information for the study, where the safety stock and order quantity changes were quantitatively evaluated and consignment storage qualitatively. The study has focused on two remote suppliers located in Asia. The study found that using the SERV1 service-level methodology reduces the company's tied up capital by 13.6% and total costs by 15.9%, with the additional effect of a higher and more even service level for the entire product range. Also, deciding the order quantities by using economic order quantity resulted in a reduction of 9,8% in capital tied up and a marginal decrease in total costs. The percentage changes are in relation to the current situation and the costs which change in connection with the introduction of the scenarios are included. A consignment storage will reduce capital tied up, but the costs would probably increase in the transition from the present. In this scenario, it is important to evaluate the profit of decreasing tied up capital to the increased costs. Scenario 2 - Percentage of demand during the lead time was not considered to give a sufficiently good result and is for that reason not worth for Husqvarna to move forward with. The conclusion of the study is that Husqvarna Group should dimension its security stocks and review its order quantities for the existing articles according to the recommended methods. They should also focus on determining the order quantity when starting to buy new articles. Consignment storage should be further investigated on the basis of difficulties to quantitatively investigate costs. The result of the study can be used for both remote and nearby suppliers and is therefore considered to be generalizable for all Husqvarna products and also for other companies.

Full textSödra Interiör has a plant in Kallinge which manufactures flooring and panels of pine. As production has increased, inventory levels has increased. This has increased the risk that wrong raw material is used for the wrong product. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach that reduces the risk that wrong materials are used. The study shows that something must be done that ensure that correct materials are used for the right product. Stock level and information quality are other concerns identified. Key concepts to solve problems are: well organized, information, advanced planning and space. Improvement proposals are different in nature, where some improvements could be made immediately with few resources, while others take more time and require more resources. The main suggestions for improvement is about creating more space in the warehouse, clearly mark up of the timber package contents and better information quality.
