Abstract:
Nonlinear transverse vibrations of composite rods pre-loaded with lagging arranged symmetrically on both sides of the axis of the composite rod under the action of a statically applied transverse load are investigat-ed. The cases of attaching the lagging only to the ends of the composite rod, as well as when the laggings are continuously attached to the composite rod along its entire length, are considered. The results of the study of nonlinear transverse vibrations of composite rods under the action of a statically applied transverse load are presented. When conducting studies of transverse vibrations of composite rods, solutions of differential equations of vibration of prestressed through beams and stiffening cores of high-rise buildings are obtained. The obtained differential equations of vibration of composite rods allow us to determine the dynamic char-acteristics of prestressed through beams under various linear and boundary conditions. A method for com-posing differential equations of free and forced oscillations of prestressed through beams and stiffening cores of high-rise buildings and solving differential equations under various linear and nonlinear boundary conditions is developed. Expressions are given for determining the longitudinal forces and torques at the ends of the rod at any lo-cation of the lagging from the axis and at any different stiffness of the lagging

Abstract:
The rate of DNA mutation is known to fluctuate across the genome but the patterns of mutation rate variation and molecular causes are poorly defined. It is important to understand these patterns of mutation as they influence where deleterious mutations are likely to arise and how rapidly sequences are likely to accumulate change between species, a measure often used as a proxy for functional constraint. In this work I investigate the relationship between DNA replication and apparent mutation hotspots adjacent to transcription factor binding sites. In eukaryotes both DNA strands are replicated simultaneously, the leading strand as a continuous stretch and the lagging strand as a series of discrete Okazaki fragments that are subsequently ligated together. Some transcription factors are able to bind the DNA lagging strand during replication and act as a partial barrier to DNA polymerase, resulting in the accumulation of Okazaki fragment junctions adjacent to these sites. I find that mutation rate is correlated genome wide with Okazaki junction frequency, suggesting that Okazaki junction processing may be error-prone. We present a mechanistic hypothesis to explain this locally elevated mutation rate and propose a role for lagging strand replication and its error-prone Pol α tract retention in the formation of these hotspots. I test this hypothesis using Okazaki fragment sequencing data from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to identify peaks in Okazaki junctions. When these peaks are aligned and orientated, so that the direction of lagging strand replication is uniform, I find a peak in substitution rate immediately downstream of Okazaki junctions, precisely where Pol α tract retention is predicted to occur. Novel binding motifs are identified within the underlying DNA of these junctions that can be assigned to known strong and fast-binding transcription factors, previously implicated in the phasing of nucleosomes, such as Reb1. I show that mutation hotspots adjacent to transcription factor binding sites are a conserved feature of eukaryotic genomes. In the human genome I predict sites of preferential Pol α retention using DNase I hypersensitivity footprint data. We observe that those footprints predicted as germline-specific manifest an elevated mutation signature. I propose that the rapid binding of some transcription factors to DNA following replication is required for nucleosome positioning or other important functions, however this incurs a cost in terms of locally elevated mutation rate adjacent to and within the sequence specific binding site. As a consequence these binding sites are biologically important mutational hotspots whose functional significance has been systematically underestimated by standard measures of sequence constraint.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to describe which foreign exchange risk techniques that are used by medium- and large-sized Swedish companies within the Jönköping region, and how they as well as a bank evaluate the techniques in the current recession.

Background: The reason why companies decide to expand their operations abroad is to take advantage from imperfections in other national markets. The fluctuations in currencies and exchange rates can have a huge effect on a company’s cash flows when doing business abroad. Therefore, when companies manage their foreign exchange risk, they have to be familiar with all the methods and tools available in order to pick the ones that best suit their needs.

Method: We sent out a questionnaire and got it answered by eight companies within the Jönköping region regarding their strategy when managing foreign exchange risk. We have also interviewed a financial adviser, working at Handelsbanken, regarding the techniques offered to companies. A “foreign currency table” located in Linköping, was also contacted. They are in charge of creating recommendations and products sold by Handelsbanken.

Conclusion: Hedging is the most frequently used tool by the companies in our study. Leading and lagging strategies are used quite often, while swaps and invoice currency is used less frequently by them. Exposure netting and cash pooling does not seem to be used at all. We believe that companies generally should seek more information on new techniques introduced in the market and be open to new possibilities and solutions for managing currency risk. Most of the companies in our sample, according to us, are too comfortable in their choice of techniques.


Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats är att beskriva vilka valutarisk tekniker som används av medelstora och stora företag inom Jönköpings området, samt hur dessa företag och en bank utvärderar teknikerna i den rådande lågkonjunkturen.

Bakgrund: Anledningen till varför företag väljer att expandera utomlands är för att ta nytta av fördelar som uppstår i andra marknader. Fluktuationer i valutor och valutakurser kan ha stor effekt på företagens kassaflöden när handel utomlands utförs. När företag hanterar sin valutarisk måste de vara familjära med de olika metoder som finns tillgängliga, för att få reda på vilka av dessa som bäst tillgodoser deras behov.

Metod: Åtta företag inom Jönköpings regionen, svarade på ett formulär, angående deras strategi när det kommer till hantering av valutarisk. Vi har även intervjuat en företags rådgivare på Handelsbanken, angående teknikerna som de erbjuder företagen. Valutabordet i Linköping har också blivit kontaktat. De har till uppgift att ta fram rekommendationer och produkter som säljs av Handelsbanken.

Slutsats: Hedging är den teknik som används mest av företagen i vår undersökning. Leading och lagging används rätt så ofta, medan swaps och invoice currency används mer sällan av dem. Exposure netting och cash pooling tycks inte användas alls. Vi anser att företag generellt ska eftersöka mer information om nya tekniker som introduceras på marknaden samt vara öppna för nya möjligheter och lösningar till att hantera valutarisk. De flesta av de undersökta företagen anser vi i dagsläget är för bekväma i sina val av tekniker.

Abstract:
DNA replication is the most fundamental process in all living species. Faithful replication and regulation are crucial for genome stability. Replisomes are protein assemblies that replicate DNA: they unwind double stranded DNA, synthesize RNA primers on the leading strand and lagging strand, and synthesize new DNA. The replisome of the low G + C content Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis contains two different DNA polymerases: a processive high-fidelity replicative polymerase PolC on the leading and lagging strand, and an error-prone DnaE on the lagging strand, which extends RNA primers before hand-off to Pole. We found that DnaE interacts with the helicase DnaCBs and the primase DnaG, and that these proteins form a complex in vitro. These interactions, which position DnaE in the lagging strand half of the replisome as expected from previous studies, are analysed in more detail here. We show that protein-protein interactions within binary complexes and ternary complexes formed by DnaE, DnaG and DnaCBs are functionally relevant. DnaE partially inhibits the helicase and the primase activities, while DnaCBs and DnaG stimulate each other's activities. Neither the helicase nor the primase had any effect on DnaE polymerase activity; but, they improved its fidelity, likely via allosteric effects induced by direct proteinprotein interactions that lower the efficiency of nucleotide mis-incorporation in the catalytic site of DnaE. These regulations within the replisome lagging strand subunit might participate in the synchronization of synthesis of the lagging-strand synthesis with the leading-strand, and improve the fidelity of lagging strand synthesis. This, and the possible roles of DnaE in other events related to DNA synthesis related events are discussed here.

A significant source of noise at pipeline facilities is piping radiated noise. Although the noise generation is due to the internal geometries and flow conditions of the rotating equipment or due to the orifices or valves, the acoustical radiator is the piping. Piping and compressor casings on numerous gas turbine driven turbocompressor packages as well as piping at meter stations and regulator stations have been treated using acoustical laggings, as a retrofit as well as during design. However very little information exists in the industry regarding the acoustical performance of site installed acoustical lagging systems. With the advent of innovative testing techniques, installed lagging system Insertion Losses have been obtained, and significant experience has been gained regarding material selection and system performance. As opposed to the massive panels typically used for acoustical enclosures on turbocompressor packages, acoustical laggings utilize lightweight and often removable materials. This paper discusses material properties that enhance the performance of acoustical lagging systems, considerations regarding corrosion prevention and removability, the importance of proper installation techniques, and field testing procedures to determine installed performance of acoustical lagging systems.

Abstract:
The lagging behavior is first exemplified by a rapidly stretched spring and a one-dimensional fin to illustrate the phase-lag concept via the thermal and mechanical properties that most engineers are familiar with. The second-order lagging model is then introduced to correlate with drug delivery in tumors and bioheat transfer that involve multiple carriers in heat/mass transport. Analytical expressions for the phase lags are derived, aiming toward revealing different physical origins for delays in different systems. For drug delivery in tumors involving nonequilibrium mass transport, the lagging behavior results from the finite time required for the rupture of liposome in releasing the antitumor drug and the finite time required for tumor cells to absorb drugs. For bioheat transfer involving nonequilibrium heat transport, on the other hand, the lagging behavior results from the finite time required for exchanging heat between tissue and blood. Pharmacodynamical and biological properties affecting the phase lags, as well as the dominating parameters over the lagging response are identified through the nondimensional analysis. Involvement of the thermal Mach number, which measures the speed of blood flow relative to the conventional thermal wave speed, is a new feature in this extension of the lagging model. The second order effects in lagging are well correlated with the number of carriers involved in nonequilibrium heat and mass transport.

Abstract:
The lagging motion of nonlinear oscillators with respect to the externally driven field was treated analytically and the calculation results were compared with observed results. Such lagging problem may occur in nonlinear systems whose behavior crucially depends on the frequency of the applied force. The lagging motion of the nonlinear oscillator with respect to the harmonically driven field made the oscillator respond in a way that reduced the effect of the applied field. The calculation considering the lagging motion yielded proper results in the expansion ratio of the bubble under ultrasound and trajectories in phase plane, the frequency spectrum for a forced inverted pendulum, and the amplitude response of the Duffing oscillator.

Abstract In the process of turbine acceleration, due to the influence of compressor and complex secondary air system, the change process of coolant purge flow is relatively lagging behind that of mainstream flow and rotational speed. The lagging egress of coolant flow influence the aerodynamic performance and endwall cooling effectiveness of turbine acceleration process. The flow field and aerothermal performance of two-stage axial turbines combined with rim seal structures and coolant purge flow lagging effects in the turbine acceleration process was numerically investigated using Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) via SST turbulence model. The effects of lagging coolant purge flow across the rim seal on the turbine aerodynamics and endwall cooling effectiveness were analyzed. The obtained results show that the turbine aerodynamic efficiency obtains the maximum value when the coolant purge flow lagging time equals to half the acceleration time at the same rotational speed after the end of lagging times. The total-to-total efficiency for the second stage is more sensitive to lagging times. The turbine output power is almost un-changed due to combination of additional work capacity and aerodynamic loss with the introduction of coolant. The turbine endwalls have the maximum averaged cooling effectiveness in the turbine acceleration process without consideration of the coolant purge flow lagging time. And endwall cooling effectiveness decreases with the increase of coolant purge flow lagging time at the same rotational speed and mainstream flow conditions. The detailed flow field of two-stage turbine considering interaction between the coolant purge flow and mainstream was also discussed. The present work provides the reference for the match design between the turbine mainstream flow and secondary air flow system.

A refuse-fired boiler has many components to make it do what it is supposed to do. BRIL is a key component of the boiler just as important as the tubes that carry the water &/or steam, the soot blowers that keep the unit free of fly ash or dust, the burners that burn the fuel efficiently, the economizers that recover heat and pre-heat the water, and many more such systems found on, in and around the boiler. They all help keep the boiler operating thermally and energy efficient. Proper BRIL material selection and installation can have an energy savings of 5–7% per year in fuel consumption. That is why experts say, “brick, refractory, insulation, and lagging (BRIL) installed to save energy, saves money at a rate that is essential for efficient plant operation.”

Abstract Lift coefficients of a pitching-lagging SC1095 airfoil with different phase differences and amplitudes under Re = 3.92 × 106 are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A simulation results based on overset grid technology and k–ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model agrees with experimental results. Dynamic stall is associated with Leading Edge Vortex formation (LEV). The formation process during dynamic stall is shown using pressure superimposed with flow streamlines and dimensionless vorticity field contour. Five cases of phase difference between freestream velocity and lagging motion, φ = 0, 1/4π, 1/2π, π and three cases of amplitudes of lagging motion, hamp = 0.3m, 0.5m, 0.7m, are compared, which showed a regular effect on the lift coefficient loops.

Tremendous money is wasted due to the lack of attention to the water gauge and flue plate stiffeners, and their impact on the insulation and lagging design. The design and installation of an insulation and lagging system will depend heavily upon the flue or duct stiffener arrangement. The stiffener arrangement is determined by many factors including the water gauge of the flue or duct plate design. The stiffener pattern and size is the first thing you consider when designing an insulation and lagging system. Therefore, it is imperative to understand how the size, shape and pattern of the external stiffeners are developed. The stiffener sizing of yesterday was based on a much lower water gauge pressure and allowed the insulation to be placed between the stiffeners without having to cut-to-fit. The stiffeners being designed today are quite large and much farther apart. This is due in part to the water gauge number being used in the design calculations and because they have not considered the required insulation thickness and application. A well designed and installed insulation and lagging system will save money and energy at a rate that is essential for an efficient plant operation. This is especially true when adding a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) or a selective non catalytic reduction system (SNCR) to the back end of a steam-generating unit. The insulation and lagging system is critical for these air pollution systems to operate correctly.

Community and neighborhood organizations are in the process of renewing the organizational culture, considering technological environments in the way of training, and advancing communally, being competitive in adaptation and learning, creating new solutions, promoting change, and altering the status quo, based on the advancement of technology over the last few years, currently applied in most organizations. The decisive factor is the ability of true leaders to appropriate the Technological Acceptance Model –TAM– principles, participating in programs and projects, adopting new technologies from the different actors involved, contributing to the welfare of each community. There is, however, a relative resistance to the use of technology as support in community management, due to the generational differences in leaders and dignitaries, according to collected reports in this study, in relation to the age range of dignitaries –Generation X and Baby Boomers predominate–. They present a challenge to digital inclusion with difficulties related to age, cognitive, sensory, difficulty in developing skills, and abilities required in Digital Technologies, necessary to face new scenarios post-pandemic and, in general, the need to use technological facilities.

Children with disabilities suffer disproportionately from the learning crisis. Although they represent only about 1.5% to 5% of the child population, they comprise more than half of out-of-school children globally. Inspired by a commitment that every child has the right to quality education, a growing global drive for inclusive education promotes an education system where children with disabilities receive an appropriate and high-quality education that is delivered alongside their peers. The global commitment to inclusive education is captured in the Sustainable Development Goal 4—ensuring inclusive and equitable education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. This paper explores inclusive education for children with disabilities in Mongolia’s mainstream education system, based on a 2019 survey of more than 5,000 households; interviews with teachers, school administrators, education ministry officials, and social workers; and visits to schools and kindergartens in four provinces and one district of the capital city. Mongolia has developed a strong legal and policy framework for inclusive education aligned with international best practice, but implementation and capacity are lagging. This is illustrated using four indicators of inclusive education: inclusive culture, inclusive policies, inclusive practices, and inclusive physical environments. The conclusion presents a matrix of recommendations for government and education sector development partners.

This technical report documents the second of a two-phase research and development (R&D) study in support of the development of a combined Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology that accommodates geotechnical as well as structural design limit states for design of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reinforced concrete, hydraulic navigation structures. To this end, this R&D effort extends reliability procedures that have been developed for other non-USACE structural systems to encompass USACE hydraulic structures. Many of these reinforced concrete, hydraulic structures are founded on and/or retain earth or are buttressed by an earthen feature. Consequently, the design of many of these hydraulic structures involves significant soil structure interaction. Development of the required reliability and corresponding LRFD procedures has been lagging in the geotechnical topic area as compared to those for structural limit state considerations and have therefore been the focus of this second-phase R&D effort. Design of an example T-Wall hydraulic structure involves consideration of five geotechnical and structural limit states. New numerical procedures have been developed for precise multiple limit state reliability calculations and for complete LRFD analysis of this example T-Wall reinforced concrete, hydraulic structure.
