Abstract:
This book is a collection of the proceedings of the study seminar held in Verona on 14 November 2003. This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a history of nuns in Venice and its lagoon, including a discussion of secular and ecclesiastical regulation of nuns by the designated magistracy, the Provveditori sopra Monasteri, and the Patriarch of Venice and Bishop of Torcello, the nuns’ relationship with the outside world, and efforts to reform their behavior. It explores the role of nuns in Venetian society, focusing on the significant majority who were from the ruling patrician class and the effects of this factor on their musical lives. The physical layout of nunneries is considered, as are internal governance, finances, and record-keeping. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the methodology the author developed for dealing with the large number of institutions over several centuries for which the archives are often very fragmentary.

Abstract:
Cultural aversion to microbes, healthiness or desire for safe bathing, the applications for water disinfection are varied and the technologies used to achieve this goal are numerous. The authors looked at a simple solution to implement: the use of a reagent called performic acid. Consequently, more than two years of applied research, observations and analyzes were necessary to demonstrate its harmlessness towards the natural environment. The strength of the demonstration lies in the cross-vision of many researchers and scientists from different backgrounds who shared their studies and observations. The strength of this testimony also lies in the diversity of the application cases, including notable and sensitive receiving environments as different as the Seine, the Atlantic Ocean or the Venice lagoon. Through its intentions and results, this work is a step, moving forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 6 “clean water and sanitation” relying on the lever of SDG 17 “partnerships for the goals”. Abstract:
This book explores the musical world of the nuns of Venice and its lagoon, concentrating on the period from the sixteenth century to the fall of Venice around 1800. It looks at sacred music performed both by the nuns themselves and by professional musicians they employed. Following a historical introduction, the book considers the nuns as collective patrons, both of musical performances by professionals in their external churches, primarily for the annual feast of the patron saint, a notable attraction for both Venetians and foreign visitors, and of musical instruments, namely organs and bells. Next, the study examines the rituals and accompanying music for the transitions in a nun’s life, most importantly the ceremonies through which she moved from the outside world to the cloister. Then the book turns to liturgical music within the cloister, performed by the nuns themselves, from chant to simple polyphony, and to the rare occasions where more elaborate music can be documented. Two more chapters look at, respectively, the teaching of music to both nuns and girls resident in convents as boarding students, and at entertainment, musical and theatrical, by and for the nuns. Appendices include a calendar of musical events at Venetian nunneries, details on nunnery organs, lists of teachers, and inventories of musical and ceremonial books, both manuscript and printed. A companion website features editions of complete musical works, excerpts from which are included in the text as examples, along with sound files.
