Abstract:
The field of knowledge of Occupational Therapy is diversified and expanding. This book addresses several themes inherent in the profession from different theoretical and empirical perspectives. Organized by occupational therapy teachers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the book consolidates the scientific production of different authors and is organized around current themes presented to Occupational Therapy: professional education, health-related approaches and actions, as well as different approaches focusing on the socio-cultural perspectives of the profession. Some texts addressing the history of Occupational Therapy at UFRJ complement the work. The wide scope and diversity of this book are ensured in chapters that report experiences associated with university extension, research, and undergraduate teaching; address Occupational Therapy in the hospital, Occupational Health, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Care settings; emphasize the professional/cultural interface, social issues, and territorial and socio-community approaches; bring ethnic-racial and gender discussions. Finally, the history of the Occupational Therapy course at UFRJ is covered in the last three chapters: the struggling trajectory to establish the course is addressed in the first of these chapters; the second reports how the course has expanded since its first years; the third brings the path to consolidation of the Occupational Therapy service at the university hospital. This book, which is based on successful experiences and current scientific production, will certainly provide its readers with important reflections.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a historical overview of medical education in the Western world. It begins with a brief description of the “French school” that emerged out of the French Revolution. This model, with an emphasis on clinicopathologic correlation, has also been labeled “hospital medicine.” The discussion then moves to outline the contributions made by Abraham Flexner’s seminal 1910 report. Flexner is generally considered to be largely responsible for the traditional organizational framework of medical school curricula, one with two phases: preclinical and clinical. The perceived shortcomings of this pedagogical approach, sometimes called “university medicine” or the “2-plus-2” model are noted. The two major corrective strategies, systems-based or case-based teaching (originating in the 1950s) and problem-based learning (adapted to medical education in the 1970s), are then discussed.

Abstract:
The proper education of a doctor must not be restricted to the sciences but rather must include study of the humanities and the social sciences. This is best achieved by having an interactive and physically integrally located medical school. Not only must medicine be based on modern biology, a biology education is also essential for all college undergraduates. One cannot consider genetic engineering if one does not understand what a gene is and how it is controlled. Unique to medical education are the places of medical practice. Besides providing a site of learning, the teaching hospital must provide excellent patient care and be responsive to the surrounding community. The university must embrace these other goals. Society should provide high quality health care for all. This cannot be achieved if only the lowest cost is the goal. While resources are limited, economic efficiency cannot be the only parameter.
