Full textThis project, a film made of short video clips and still photographs, is a continuation of my observation of the urban birds of L.A County: pigeons, seagulls, and herons. There are two other sides that complete the triangle my work relies on: the Hispanic community, which is indirectly present in this document, and me, the outsider/wanderer. This triangle captures an essence of strangeness and uninvited existence that I find in this town, but can be found anywhere else.
I chose the format of the projected film because of its "lack of weight." I like the idea that the project has no real physical presence, that it is all data, or memory. Edward Limonov wrote that back in Russia, he had many books, but immigrants do not have books and now he has only three. I feel much the same about art objects and I find it appropriate that once I leave, carrying a compact disc in its case with me, I will leave no traces behind.

Management of pines in the southeastern U.S. contributes to the region's economy and carbon sequestration potential. In this study, we used Virginia forest harvest maps to identify individual patches (stands) of pine forest which had each gone through a full harvest life cycle (rotation). With unique managed pine stands identified, we used satellite imagery to estimate growth of canopy leaf area over time within each stand, using a metric called leaf area index (LAI). We identified 13,140 separate stands, each with up to 28 years of available data. We took the first full-state census of areas of managed pines in Virginia, and their leaf area development. We acquired one LAI measurement from February of each year, for each stand in Virginia. Using February LAI for each of our stands, we found that an average stand in VA has a maximum winter LAI of 2.02 (meaning an approximate maximum summer LAI of 4.04), and that stands generally reached their peak LAI after around 14 years of growth. It is recommended, in VA, that a landowner fertilize their stand in the middle of a harvest rotation if summer peak LAI is under 3.5, at stand closure. We found that at ten years of stand age, 45.8% of stands were estimated to reach above this threshold. Since this study's dataset is the most comprehensive LAI dataset for managed pines in VA, it may be used to improve management outcomes as well as understand pine productivity for land surface modeling purposes.

This essay aims to study the development and revolution of lacquer in Taiwan. From the historical point of view, divided into lacquer business and lacquer work, this essay hopes to systematically organize the lacquer history of Taiwan. The time span starts from Japanese Occupation till the post-Taiwan Restoration. Firstly, to discuss the education of lacquer workers, this essay begins with Yamanaka’s private school built by a Japanese, Kou Yamanaka and includes the transformation of the school history and its lecture content. Secondly, because of Yamanaka’s contribution, Kou-Shan Lai, a student of Mr. Yamanaka, and his son, Tjouh-Ming Lai, become representatives of Taiwan lacquer work. Kou-Shan Lai, the founder of Gaun Shan Store, transcends the barriers of tradition carved lacquerware and invents several-layer-lacquer-painting. Furthermore, Kou-Shan Lai’s lacquer painting becomes a representation of his artistic work. Seeing from the tree lacquer techniques, this essay argues the thematic types and uniqueness of Kou-Shan Lai’s lacquer painting. Later, Tjouh-Ming Lai simplifies the producing processes of Taiwan ware in order to make the creativity of Taiwan ware easier. Then, Tjouh-Ming Lai also re-examines the techniques of several-layer-lacquer-painting invented by his father, Kou-Shan Lai, and discusses his experimental results. From the prosperity to the decline, the history of Taiwan lacquer has developed for almost a hundred years. Accordingly, because of the importance of the cultural preservation, to study art and craft of lacquer in Taiwan becomes necessary.

This thesis applies Hopper*s Principles (1993) to assert that the semantic varieties of Mandarin directional verbs qi-lai, xia-qu, and shang-lai are reflections of grammaticalization. The grammaticalization of Mandarin qi-lai, xia-qu, and shang-lai has left traces on selectional restriction, syntactic constraints on object positions, object definiteness, and requirements of perfective aspect marker. Based on Lehmann (1991), these traces lead to the conclusion that Mandarin qi-lai, xia-qu, and shang-lai shift from clause-internal to cross-clause grammaticalization. The semantic shifts of Mandarin qi-lai, xia-qu, and shang-lai are considered to be motivated by SPACE-to-TIME metaphorical transfer. The transfer is also constrained by theta-role requirements.

The artist uses own dreams and fantasies as the creative theme for the project. Usually, when stress and pressure arise in my life, strange dreams appear and serve as imperative inspiration. The scope of the research focuses on exploring the subconscious embedding in the artist’s dreams. In the creative process, I use my detail observations and unique lines to construct and express my dream world as well as my beauty standard. Through the process of structuring my dream world, the author not only gained confidence in my current artistic style, but also obtained the desire to broaden my creative spectrum and try various different artistic styles thus avoid being confined in a narrow perspective.

The study discusses the effects of plants improve the outdoor micro-climate through Leaf Area Index(LAI). It chooses 8 point of plant LAI to measure the open space and leafy shade’s micro-climate parameter in National United University, Miaoli County, Taiwan and it individually measures the microclimate which included the temple, relatively humidity, wind speed black ball temple and the divergence of the open space and the space under the tree shadow. The study result shows that the LAI average of eight points through the cover of the tree-crown is between 1.81 and 6.49 from May to July, and the temperature under the leafy shade is 2.7 degrees Celsius lower than the open space. Moreover, the average globe temperature under the tree shadow is lower 8.3 oC than the open space, and the average divergence is 477.1W/m2 lower than the open space. Moreover, the relatedly humidity is 13.6% higher than the open space. From the Regression Analysis, it shows that when the LAI is 2.2, the Screening effect is 80 percentages, and the LAI is 3.8, the Screening effect raises to 90 percentages. The result of the research proves that the LAI is changed with the immediately environment and time, and also the significant effect for radiation resistance and temperature decreasing. In conclusion, it can improve the living environment microclimate through the plant to avoid the divergence hurts human baby.

Abstract This study investigated climbers’ personal encounter norms, social encounter norms by using the Return Potential Model in Chi-Lai campsites. 396 valid questionnaires were obtained by using on-site survey during July 29 to October 30, 2005. The results indicated that(1)climbers in Chi-Lai campsites have personal encounter norms. (2)personal encounter norms are not influenced by climbers’ characteristics. (3)the intensity and crystallization of the social encounter norms are high. (4) social encounter norms are influenced by climbers’ characteristics. (5)when perceived encounters exceeded climbers’ personal encounter norms, their perceived crowding increased. (6)when anticipated encounters exceeded climbers’ personal encounter norms, their perceived crowding increased. When anticipated encounters are not exceeded climbers’ perceived encounters, their perceived crowding increased. (7)the intensity of norms are different by using acceptability and preference to test social encounter norms. Three conclusions were drawn. (1)encounter norms exist in the low-density recreation area. (2)perceived encounters, personal encounter norms, and anticipated encounters could be used to predict perceived crowding. (3)personal encounter norms are influenced by the different variables in the questionnaire. Suggestions were made for the Taroko National Park management and future research.

The subject of this study is “Borderlands” in an attempt to investigate circumstances in the world human beings create might encounter and to connect people gathering as a society by its nature and phenomena associated to my living environment. By means of applied works and creative practice, my expectation, in terms of ongoing events and news, was that with artistic viewpoint to participant, to bridge and to facilitate new topics as a result. The idea of “Borderlands” is an imaginative frontier relevant to “Lands” where as the cornerstone of human society. “Lands” is an abstract concept, which addresses control power lies in human society, invisible or physical. This could be cultural ideology cultivated in human development, or in the history of human activity over the years, such as mechanism resulting from political, and economical behavior. However, “Borderlands”, a spectrum of reality that is beyond the rational, yet is located on or near a frontier control power. And, “Lands” is, therefore, far beyond, for those compressed could therefore escape, those invisible situations could be revealed, truth could be exposed, and individuals and raise theirs needs. Thus, becomes a possibility. In this study, the following five chapters are : (1), Purpose and overview; (2), Association to real events and present researches ; (3), Elements of each works; (4), Presentation of Applied Creative Practices; (5), Summary, including opinions and future perspectives. My intention is to view art works as individual with anti- interpretation considered, away and beyond the “I Think” frame as much as possible. Separated the element of “I”, by means of open mind attitude, I tried not to explain meanings left behind, but to exam from the art work itself. By doing so, this study hopes to build a connection with others externally, to brainstorm the common prototype for art work, and to foresee the phenomena, interaction with the age.

This thesis aims to investigate the structures of lai and gei purposives in Mandarin Chinese. Jones (1991) notes that purpose clauses are formed with the addition of an infinitival adjunct clause, which serves to modify the main predicate to express an intention. This thesis starts with a discussion on earlier works that investigate Mandarin purposive constructions, such as Liao & Lin (2018), Huang & Ahrens (1999), Ting & Chang (2004), and Lin & Huang (2015). They propose that a lai-purposive construction is composed of a main clause and a CP, which is headed by lai, and consider the gei in gei-purposives either a verb or a preposition. Given the (in)compatibility between modals, temporal adverbs as well as interrogative wh-phrases and lai/gei purposives, I propose that the constituent following lai should be smaller than IP while the one following gei is larger than VP. Moreover, since Mandarin Chinese does not allow right adjunction, and the purposive part of a sentence does not seem to be syntactically selected by the main verb, I build my analysis on Den Dikken (2006)’s idea that there is a Relator which mediates two syntactic constituents, and the predicate ascribes a property to the subject. I propose that the lai in the lai-purposives is an overt Relator, which needs to take constituents preceding and following it as its arguments. As for gei-purposives, I propose that a covert Relator exists in this construction, which mediates between the CP preceding gei and the predicate vP that follows gei. This analysis is evidenced by the fact that this covert Relator sometimes can be overtly realized as lai, which gives rise to lai-gei purposives, whose meaning is similar to that of gei-purposives. In other words, through the postulation of the existence of a Relator in Mandarin purposive constructions, we can account for not only the syntactic relation between the constituents preceding and following it but also the emergence of the purposive meaning in such sentences.

《Relics/Landscape - Creative Discourse by Shen-Ru Lai》。To choose this topic for the thesis is because after moving to Hsinchu, I was deeply touched by the local humane and cultural environment, such as the shabby architectural elements outside buildings coupled with the natural vegetation landscape, which inspire in me the contemplation and retrospection of nature conservation. With a surreal landscaping approach, I combine the artifacts and natural vegetation through fantasy correlation to create a scene of destruction of human civilization resulted from its ultimate development – Natural once more reclaims its dominance over the entire Earth. My intention is to re-examine the relationship among “human beings”, “Nature” and “technological civilization”. Chapter One is the Exordium, in which I expound the background motivation of the artistic works, as well as the research purposes and methods. In the second chapter, thoughts related to the works are discussed on a theoretical basis. In Section One of the second chapter, the naturalistic spirit in pursuit of natural landscape and the deep love for the natural scenery are portrayed on the canvas with true state of mind and pure feelings. In Section Two, the spirit of local realism is hoisted to convey the passionate love for the land and present the local cultural background. In Section Three, a fictional environment of ancient gardens is created to illustrate man-made landscapes for the exploration of the association of a fantasy world shaped by surrealism to the creation of the art works. In Section Four, it is about the relationship between the natural environment and human-centricity, where I talk about stretching humanism to the natural environment, and then the relationship between Nature and art. In Chapter Three, the creative ideas are discussed to look into the origins of the artwork patterns. Section One of this chapter discusses the timeframes of relics for which the ruins are taken as references for creating the shapes and appearances – the appearances are uniquely shaped by the external forces of time. In Section Two, it depicts the inspiration from the scene of the wrapping and spreading of the vegetation covering all over the surface of the artifacts. In Section Three, it presents the construct and correlation, where the concept of setting up a stage and a surreal approach is used to create visual effects. Chapter Four gives readers the meanings of the artworks, where the series of creative art works between 2010 and 2012 such as “Landscape Indulgence” and “Green Relics” are expounded for the craftsmanship elaboration and artistic purports the works are meant to manifest. In Chapter Five, the fulfillment of this artistic creation is summarized and recommended as a reference for the future development and breakthrough.

This thesis deals with the uses of traditional completive qi-lai and inchoative qi-lai in Mandarin Chinese. The same VP can occur in the two constructions of qi-lai and denote (a)telicity respectively. The completive use is restricted and is considered to be derived. This research mainly discusses the derivation mechanism for completive construction and by the way the semantics of non-predicative qi-lai. First, the study refines the core meaning of qi-lai. Qi-lai requires three features, a change point, a following duration, and degree or quantity feature. Accordingly, it selects atelic situation types. Next, a mechanism is proposed to derive completive construction. The mechanism is an interaction between semantics and syntactic operation. The characteristics of VPs and object NPs determine the culmination condition. If the event has culmination condition, the object NP will be attracted. Then, the completive construction is formed and telic interpretation is obtained.

People have been interested and studied in the subject of gender always. The difference between femininity and masculinity fascinate people so much that we keep learning the new knowledge about it, and keep defining the new meaning to it. The early childhood memory inspires me, who started to think about those doubts and confusions came from my past experience. I started a series of research about sex distinction and presented the magnificent vision of Utopia with the artistic creation. I take the first step from studying the history of hermaphroditism, then digging into the theory of gender performativity and how camp aesthetic broaden the vision of gender. Further more, I studied how those artists and performers at all times and all countries take the form of hermaphroditism. What kind of story would be told behind the images they choose to expose in front of the crowd? Combined the current trends from the past to nowadays; I bring up a point of view about the future possible gender. Then, I continued to explain the two transferred stages during my creation procedure. In the beginning I take the action of making street stencils to unleash my energy and emotion, until the end I finally learn how to settle and introspect, so I changed my direction to produce the stencils works with the walls I made. The ways of creation might be different, because my inner world had went through an evolution too. By creating the multiple symbols of walls and unique meaning of stencils works, the gender and culture, reality and imagination, tradition and innovation start to merge together. I selected several public figures that have the same characteristic of gender performativity at all times and in countries. I recreated their images with the skill of stencils. The special visual effect that is made by rough walls and stencils is unusual, actually I think it produced an atmosphere around those characters on the wall, it seems that they had their own secret conversation. The distances of times and places were melt at this moment. The past, now and the future connect one another. The works I made are not only pictures, which tell about my vision of Utopia, but also my sincere wish for the coming of a ideal future world in my mind.

To the author, nature is the source of most of the inspirations. The author uses personal intuition to deal with memory and imagination comes from the nature; the author, through the use of metallic media material and processing technique, simplify and deduce the inspirations into metallic works so as to release personal emotion and express the author’s innovative concept. The title of this article is set as: “Consummate and fusion”. “Consummate” means that the author’s work usually takes the round shape and it is hoped that a message of warmth, consummate and with rhythm can be brought to the audience through it. ”Fusion” means the concept of innovation of nature, harmony and fusion. All the completed works of the author can be divided into three series, “Consummate and fusion series”, “Life bubble series” and “Liquid flow series”; the author hopes that these research works can be used to display personal innovation concept, then accompanied with text descriptions, personal innovation history of the author can be further clarified and the audience can have a chance to better understand the innovation concept behind the author. In addition, through the completion of works, the author deeply feels the insufficiency in the knowledge of the metal craftsmanship and processing technique; meanwhile, through a review on related literature, the author tries to build a self value to remind the author herself that, in addition to the learning and progress in the technique, the innovation of beautiful things is the top priority and it is very important not to confuse with the priority between the pursuit of technique and the innovation of beautiful things. Furthermore, the author would like to continuously remind herself that the only way to display richer faces on the innovative works is to continuously expand personal innovation vision. Through the completion of this research step, the author personally feels that to be able to continuously stay in the field of the innovation of the metallic work and become a professional metallic work innovator, it is very important to possess the courage to face difficulties and unsurpassed patience and persistence. Key Words: Nature, consummate and fusion, metallic craftsmanship

Sponken languages contain a phonological system that governs how sounds or visual symbols are used to form sequences known as words or morphemes Written languages use visual symbols to represent the sounds of the spoken languages. Chinese literacy includes classical and vernacular Chinese, the latter is the form what May Fourth Movement advocated and is referred to as Modern Chinese nowadays. Modern Chinese is based on the concept that literature should associate with the land and people as well as the spoken languages used in daily life and activities. Lai-Ho was affected by May Fourth Movement to create his novel closely connected with the land, people, and events in Taiwan by vernacular Taiwanese thereafter. The characteristics of his novel are using vernacular Chinese to convey events using vernacular Taiwanese or borrowing Japanese to relay the communication among Taiwanese people. This research is based on the contents of Lai-Ho’s novels and the written forms in them to explore the phenomenon in vernacular Taiwanese under hybridity in different cultures and languages.

The world is changing rapidly with the weather, the earthquakes, natural and man-made disasters. All these changes inspire the spirit of Chinese art as well as western paintings which further influence my personal style of painting. My specific interests in painting objects are people, different kinds of things that arose my attention, flowers, landscapes ,and historic spots etc. What is the purpose of painting? What would happen when eastern poetic painting style encounters western abstractionism? How to discover the psychology of painting? How to grab the depth of the painting spirit rather than the appearance? They are all very important when we want to advance our painting skills. I will also study Van Gogh, Chen Cheng-bo ,Guo Bo-chuan, and Japan's Mei Long Saburo, and make a comparison between Mei Long Saburo and Guo Bo-chuan. I will use historical research methods to collect relevant historical data and analyze their uniquely creative background. And by using theoretical analysis methods to collect the related research materials and argumentation, and to discuss the concept of art and direction which blend into their creation. By using comprehensive induction methods to help understand their visual psychology, literature, and aesthetics in their paintings. All these methods will follow the development of their creation as the main axis. I think that when western art meets eastern art, unique and sustainable value appears. I hope all these approaches and research can help advance my artistic creation.

Michelle Foucault (1926-1984) considered that the body is not only to get the meaning from the discourse but also constituted by it. Sociologist Elizabeth Grosz (1952- ) also indicated, if the body is a social object, then the body can be redefined, it's form and function can be questioned and it's position in the culture can also be re-evaluated or changed. So we can understand the body as a subject showing stateful rheological properties. We can also find the body showing the complex significance at different times, in different environment and disciplines such as religion, psychology, sociology, biology or political science and etc. For me, my growth environment is the reason why I took my body as an object of the creation and study. The value system disorder in my growth environment has extended issues of self-doubt and self-identity. The process of creation is just like relieving anxiety. It is like Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) described the process of understanding "Self" to self-healing or Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) described "psychological defense mechanism"-to solve the conflict between "super-ego" and "id"-"sublimation" is the common means. The Birth of Tragedy wrote by Nietzsche (1844-1900) mentioned archetypal figures of Apollo and Dionysus that has affected many artistic point of view later. Therefore, I have started my study from ancient Greece to western art history includes the Egyptian pharaoh as "Portrait", Lacan's "Mirror Stage" talked about how people discover themselves, and finally used concept of "Formlessness" to analyze my works related to various concepts of "Portrait", "Mirror image" and "Formlessness".

The true meaning of playing is to add it into daily life and become part of our living. “Playing” helps intriguing children’s love, curiosity and motivation for learning. In the creation discourse, I discover the fun experience of playing games by getting along with students at school and my own children. Therefore, by interactive observation I understand the importance of play for human. This is a preliminary study of my creation, and I use the image of toys as a connection of my concept and idea throughout my painting creation. The main structure of this creation discourse includes that art is game, comic caricatures and Surrealism Pop art. The idea I used in my creation is about a role between illusory and factual , using common topic and interesting contents to discribe . On the other hand, the form of creation that I use is role reversal temporal juxtaposition, and background simplify . I create a complete creation view by the discussion of those parts mentioned above. I use images like “dolls” and “models” as the creation theme to study the various possibilities of playing, and use different qualities of each toy to turn them into elements of painting. Toys are the sources of painting, the symbol of play and empathy object. Furthermore, children’s psychological need and life experience of playing games make my topic seperated into two parts “The childhood playmate series” and “The born-player series”. After creating personal image , I work on the display and application of my painting sketch . All above , I sincerely hope that I could apply the knowledge, skill and affection from “playing” to daily life. Besides, I understand the diversity of toys and increase my playing experience in life. In addition to knowledge inspiration and improved painting techniques, I avoid expressing only by feeling. I select symbolism, careful thoughts, and deep thinking to produce my creation with metaphorical theme and emotion. Through children’s exploration for game to find out their dependent on toys. Therefore, the value of toys was evelated , just like giving them a whole new life . Key words: playing, game, toy, play object

ABSTRACT The legends of magical story that were spread from the ancient times influence the people till the future continuously. The western story includes The Greek and Roman Mythology, the Scandinavian Mythology, the Egyptian Mythology, the Horoscope of Mythology or the Holy Bible; on the other side, the Eastern story includes the Chinese myths, the Tales of Terror from Japan and India Mythology, etc. In the numerous absorbing mythology, we can find so many amusing stories that are just like films have different and unique world view with plentiful pilots. There are many different stories created continuously until now, and many stories are still related to the ancient mythology. The mythology is closely connected to human nature. Human-apotheosis means that humans are similar to the Deity; in other words, Deity-hypostatization means that the Deity is also similar to the humans. This is the most important discussion in this text. In order to realize the relation between the creation by authors and mythology, modern science fiction, games, movies, novels and cartoons, it should be found out the factors of influence and told the difference caused by culture between the imagination of modern people and the ancient mythology story. This text is divided into six chapter, the basic theory and conception in my creation are expressed by "Preface" that indicates the research motivation and achievement; "Literature Review" that demonstrates the documents of old myth; and "Theoretical Foundations" reveals not only the relationship with spatiotemporal background and imagination but influence of surreal, myth and science fiction. The forth chapter "Content Type" explores the motivation and origination from my creation. Through the process of life experiences, thoughts guided and external factors, I start to have my own modes and techniques on every creation. The fifth chapter "Work Analysis" shows the point of view about my works and experiences; otherwise, it also indicates the relation between the wood material quality and me. In the final chapter "Conclusion" makes clear and direct conclusion about my feelings and spirits on my works; furthermore, gives the great expectation and insistence on my way for art creation. Key Words : Mythology, Metamorphosis, Human-apotheosis, Deity-hypostatization

Ming-Hong Lai is a mysterious yet significant left-wing intellectual during the 1930s when the Taiwan New Literature Movement was under rapid development. Recent studies on Lai mainly focus on the Nativist Literature Debate and the Taiwanese Language Debate in the 1930’s, as well as Lai’s position as a journalist, commentator and a writer in the culture field. Grown up in an era when the colonial movement shifted to political reformation, Lai’s persistent leftist position and constant concern for the proletarian has made him and his works worthy of analysis. Lai was active in the Nativist Literature Movement and the Modern Chinese Vernacular Movement. As soon as the social-political movement came to an end, in 1933, Lai joined the weekly newspaper agency run by freedom activist and began to address the social issues critically as a journalist. In 1934, while the attention of the leaders of social movement shifted toward the union of writers who believed in Progressivism. On May 6, 1934, a meeting was convened by Lai to unite the writers islandwide and they successfully funded the Taiwanese Cultural Association. To ascertain directions for the Taiwanese New Literature Movement afterwards, Lai left for Tokyo as a representative for the association to look for guidance to take the Taiwanese culture to a cross-region level. After he returned to Taiwan, he became sick and started to voice his opinion as a writer. He was determined to write for Taiwan for his whole life and to assist in issues regarding the Taiwanese New Literature. Shifted from an advocate of the cultural movement to a writer, Lai experienced the most important times during the Taiwanese New Literature Movement. When the literature during the time of war turned its focus to politics, Lai gave up his role as a writer and went to China. Early during the post-war period, Lai was able to voice his opinion as a Taiwanese writer on account that he could write the classical Chinese. As a left-wing intellectual, Lai’s concern for different ethnic groups, his mother land, and the liberation of the politics in the colonized Taiwan inspired him to incorporate socialism into literature to enlighten the public. Though his life as a writer was short, as a “cross-language, cross boundaries, cross-era Taiwanese intellectual, Lai strived to advocate the Taiwanese New Literature Movement. The evaluation of his place in the history during the period of occupation is left to the following generations. Based on limited historical resources, the researcher made an effort to position Lai in history.
