Abstract:
Lake Mungo, in New South Wales, is the home of the first known people in this country. Here, the oldest known evidence of Aboriginal people in Australia has been found. Because of its importance, it is a site which everyone should know about. To give us a feeling for Lake Mungo, Billy Reid, the illustrator of The Aboriginal Health Worker and The Aboriginal Child at School, came with me on a trip. We travelled west to the Darling River (whose Aboriginal name is Calewatta), and then south-east to Lake Mungo itself. Billy made wonderful drawings to represent the deeds and everyday life of those people. This can be reconstructed from the fossil evidence found at Lake Mungo. He has also drawn some scenes of life along the banks of the Calewatta - the river which is Billy’s own home. He hails from Bourke.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Willandra Lakes region is a series of once interconnected and now-dry lake basins in the arid zone of southeastern Australia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of cultural, archaeological, and geological significance, preserving records of Aboriginal occupation and environmental change stretching back to at least 50 ka. Linking the archaeology with the commensurate palaeoenvironmental information is complicated by the millennial time spans represented by the past hydrological record preserved in the sediment vs. the subdecadal evidence of each archaeological site. Oxygen isotope records across annual growth rings of fish otoliths (ear stones) can elucidate flooding and drying regimes on subannual scales. Otoliths from hearth sites (fireplaces) link lake hydrology with people eating fish on the lakeshore. Oxygen isotopic trends in hearth otoliths from the last glacial maximum (LGM) were previously interpreted in terms of high evaporation under dry conditions. However, this ignored hydrology-driven changes in water δ18O. Here, a mass balance model is constructed to test the effect lake desiccation has on water δ18O and how this compares with the LGM otolith records. Based on this modelling, we suggest that Lake Mungo otolith signatures are better explained by evaporation acting on full lakes rather than by lake drying.

La edilicia cristiana rural constituye un testimonio material clave en la reconstrucción del paisaje y de la historia de las islas Baleares durante la Antigüedad tardía. Las iglesias excavadas hasta el momento se han datado de forma indirecta en los siglos V y VI d.C. y se distribuyen en las islas de Mallorca y Menorca. La tesis ofrece una visión de la arquitectura rural de la Antigüedad tardía en las islas Baleares, que comprende el estado de la cuestión y el análisis arqueológico de los conjuntos estudiados. Asimismo, se estudian otros aspectos relacionados con dicha arquitectura, como las técnicas constructivas, las instalaciones, el mobiliario, ornamentos y utensilios, las áreas funerarias y los ámbitos de carácter doméstico y productivo de su entorno inmediato. El estudio arquitectónico incluye una reflexión sobre las formas edilicias, en la que se propone una reconstrucción de las iglesias de Son Bou y Fornàs de Torelló.
Rural Christian architecture constitutes an essential material evidence for both the landscape and historical reconstruction of the Balearic Islands during the late Antiquity. Churches excavated so far have been indirectly dated back to the 5th and 6th centuries AD and they are distributed along the Mallorca and Menorca islands. This PhD thesis provides an overview of the Balearic Islands’ rural architecture during the late Antiquity period by assessing the state-of-the-art and performing the archaeological analysis of the different studied sites. The research work also includes the study of other aspects of this architecture, such as building techniques, ornaments and tools, liturgical and burial areas and nearby domestic or productive spaces. The architectural study comprises an assessment on the ancient building forms, in which a reconstruction hypothesis of the Son Bou and Fornàs de Torelló’ churches is proposed.

Abstract:
Inland archaeological sites in the Australian arid zone contain few records of past environments. For those archives that do exist, such as sedimentary records, it can be difficult to associate the environmental conditions that they record directly with the time scales of human occupation. At the world heritage site of Lake Mungo, in north western New South Wales, lake shore dunes preserve a record of human occupation, and of alternating phases of wet and dry conditions in the adjacent lake. These two records provide a promising opportunity to generate commensurate behavioural and palaeoenvironmental information. As further surveying of the lunettes is completed and a more detailed and robust chronology using direct Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of the lunettes is constructed, a fuller more nuanced picture of changes in lake level, human occupation and climate will emerge. By finding new samples, new materials and new methods of analysis the chronology of human occupation and lake level changes at Lake Mungo and other Quaternary sites will become more detailed. This study investigates the potential of golden perch otoliths, which are found throughout the shoreline dunes of Lake Mungo, for providing additional detail about lake level fluctuations and general environmental conditions. Fish otoliths are bone-like structures that form in the inner ears of bony fish. They develop by the incremental deposition of calcium carbonate onto an organic matrix, forming annual growth rings. As otolith grow they take up and preserve a record of the trace element and isotopic composition of the ambient water. Some of these chemical markers are affected by changes in water level and temperature. This study analyses the δ18OCaCO3 values and trace element (Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios) composition across the age increments of golden perch otoliths. The δ18OCaCO3 values of modern golden perch from tanks of known δ18OH2O values and temperature conditions were used to validate the assumption that golden perch otoliths form in isotopic equilibrium with the ambient water. Further analyses of modern otoliths from river populations of golden perch and from populations who died in an evaporating lake were examined to determine if known flooding and drying events were preserved in their microchemistry. The same analytical methods were applied to a collection of ancient otoliths excavated from the shorelines of Lake Mungo in the 1970s to investigate changes in water conditions (flooding and drying events) through time. These ancient otoliths were also radiocarbon dated to establish a more detailed chronology of the site. This study also investigates how mass balance models and ancient otolith δ18OCaCO3 values can be used to test scenarios of lake level change at Lake Mungo.

Abstract:
The Willandra Lakes form a dry lake system consisting of a number of ancient, formerly perennial, lakes in the western Murray basin. The area has significant scientific value, providing detailed palaeoenvironmental records of arid, ice-age Australia as well as a rich and unique archaeological record. Lake Mungo, resting place of Australia’s oldest dated aboriginal remains, is a terminal lake where studies of the lake system are concentrated. Lake Mulurulu, a flow-through lake in the northern part of the system, is relatively understudied despite abounding potential and a differing hydrological regime. A range of geochronological techniques, combined with stratigraphic and isotope palaeoecological methods, inform the palaeoenvironmental history for the Lake Mulurulu lunette. A comprehensive suite of quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages is combined with detailed sedimentological analyses to build a chronostratigraphic framework. Mussel shells and fish otoliths are radiocarbon dated, and wombat teeth are analysed for electron spin resonance (ESR) and uranium series dating. Oxygen isotope analyses on fish otoliths and wombat teeth are used in an attempt to ascertain high-resolution palaeoenvironmental records for the area. The quartz was well suited for OSL dating. Very little evidence for partial bleaching was observed, though sediment mixing proved to be relatively common. A small aliquot multi-grain OSL methodology allowed the identification of sediment mixing and grain transport across unit boundaries. Many samples were found to be very young (< 200 years), and were disproportionately affected by recuperation issues, low precision and high overdispersion. Dating reveals the Mulurulu lunette comprises five major units. Unit A, dating from 60 to over 110 ka, is clay and carbonate rich with a thick palaeosol, and is equivalent to the Golgol Unit at Lake Mungo. Unit B is a clean quartz sand representing an early lake full stage, initiating around 60 ka and ending around 40 ka at the southern end of the lunette and around 32 ka at the northern end of the lunette. Unit C comprises a pelletal clay representing a drying phase, dated to 40-32 ka and 32-28 ka at the southern and northern ends of the lunette, respectively. Unit D is a 28-17 ka quartz sand representing another lake full stage. A thin, previously unrecognised, pelletal clay layer at the southern end of the lunette caps this unit. Unit E comprises laminated quartz sands derived from reworked lunette materials dating to less than 200 years old, indicating a significant amount of recent lunette remobilisation. Unconsolidated mobile sands are present on the crests and leeward side of the dunes. Oxygen isotope analyses of fish otoliths provided evidence of flood events and potentially a lake drying signal that was not expected in this flow-through lake. The oxygen isotope analyses of wombat teeth on the other hand, proved less successful for gaining insight into high-resolution palaeoenvironmental events. This research provides a new chronology of deposition for the Lake Mulurulu lunette. This forms a similar but distinctive local hydrological history compared to the previous regional understanding, built primarily on the events recorded at Lake Mungo, a terminal lake situated further downstream.

Bossa Mundo chronicles how Brazilian music has been central to Brazil’s national brand in the United States and the United Kingdom since the late 1950s. Scholarly texts on Brazilian popular music generally focus on questions of music and national identity, and when they discuss the music’s international popularity, they keep the artists, recordings, and live performances as the focus, ignoring the process of transnational mediation. This book fills a major gap in Brazilian music studies by analyzing the consequences of moments when Brazilian music was popular in Anglophone markets, with a focus on the media industries. With subject matter as varied as jazz, film music, dance fads, DJ/remix culture, and new models of musical distribution, the book demonstrates how the mediation of Brazilian music in an increasingly crowded transnational marketplace has had lasting consequences for the creative output celebrated by Brazil as part of its national brand. Through a discussion of the political meaning of mass-mediated music in chronologically organized chapters, the book shifts the scholarly focus on the music’s transnational popularity from the scholarly framework of representing Otherness to broader considerations of a media environment where listeners and intermediaries often have differing priorities. The book provides a new model for studying music from culturally rich countries in the Global South where local governments often leverage stereotypes in their national branding project.

More Time is an extended essay on the contemporary short story focused on four recent collections: Alice Munro’s Dear Life (2012); Andre Dubus’s Dancing After Hours (1996); Joy Williams’s The Visiting Privilege (2015); and Lydia Davis’s Can’t and Won’t (2014). Each publication has appeared near the conclusion of a career devoted all but exclusively to short stories, with each defining a “late style” honed over a lifetime. As well, each diverges from others in ways that have profoundly shaped our generic conceptions, and collectively they represent the four most innovative practitioners of the past half-century (with the arguable exception of Raymond Carver). Yet in an era when writing programs, The New Yorker, and distinguished journals all promulgate the short story, it remains relatively under-examined as a major literary form. We continue to argue about what a story inherently is, ignoring how differences among practitioners enliven the field. Dubus, Munro, Williams, and Davis each defy critical efforts to identify the story form’s presumed constitution, marked by a supposedly special shape or requisite length or distinct narrative trajectory. And the very contrast among their efforts reveals the expansiveness of the genre, though few have taken such a cross-glancing interpretive approach. My effort is to open up discussion, shifting from close analysis into larger speculation about possibilities established by the most innovative ­writers in their later work.

The early twenty-first century saw the emergence of a transnational cycle of supernatural horror films with gothic themes and aesthetics, many of which featured uncanny child figures. Two Australian films that self-reflexively participated in this transnational cycle are Lake Mungo (2008) and The Babadook (2014). This chapter examines how these two Australian films contribute to this international Gothic horror cycle and related genre trends in ways that ‘localize’ globally resonant film genres. I argue that Lake Mungo and The Babadook integrate culturally specific media traditions and contexts with contemporary transnational film genre preoccupations in a self-consciously ‘glocal’ generic manoeuvre.

Abstract:
Mung bean [Vigna radiata] is an important grain legume crop in Asia, particularly in India. Mungbean is consumed in the United States by a niche market in Asian cuisines, mostly as bean sprout, but is on the rise for use as an alternative plant protein as it is very high in micronutrients such as zinc, iron, and folic acid while also being low in fat and high in protein. Currently, more than two-thirds of mungbeans consumed in the United States are imported and nearly all domestically farmed mungbeans are produced in Oklahoma. This project explores the viability for mungbean to be produced by Virginia tobacco farmers as an alternative specialty or rotation crop since the demand for tobacco is on the decline. Two cultivars commercially available in the United States, Berken and OK2000, were planted in two locations in southern piedmont Virginia with an early and late planting date to determine the optimal time to plant mungbean and if it is a feasible crop in Virginia. Location played the most determining factor in overall seed size (g/100 seeds) for both cultivars--which is an indicator of quality--but the overall yield was not affected by location or planting date for either cultivar. Berken yielded an average of 771.03 lbs/ ac and OK2000 yielded an average of 728.81 lbs/ac as compared to 1000 lbs/ acre being considered “good yield.” This study suggests that an early versus late planting date has minimal effect on overall yield of mungbean, and with proper management techniques, there is potential for production in Virginia. This project is important to the AOCS community because it looks into the potential for mungbean to be grown in greater acreage within the USA as an alternative plant protein crop.

Abstract:
Países tropicais possuem alta radiação solar devido a angulação de incidência dos raios solares. Assim, são necessárias coberturas que permitam controlar a radiação incidente, responsável por cerca de um terço do ganho térmico interno. Dentre as soluções estão os telhados verdes, amplamente usados no mundo com algumas variações, como o sistema composto basicamente por uma camada de solo nu na cobertura. O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar o desempenho higrotérmico do telhado verde e do solo nu, com os sistemas de cobertura convencionais na cidade de Arapiraca-AL: laje impermeabilizada, telha cerâmica e telha de fibrocimento. Para tanto, foi realizado o monitoramento da temperatura e da umidade relativa do ar em células-teste. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do sistema de telhado na redução da amplitude térmica diária, apresentando o menor valor dessa variável (8,9ºC), assim como, menor variação da umidade relativa do ar no ambiente interno (43,5%), comportamento próximo com o da cobertura com solo nu, que apresentou o maior atraso térmico (2h) entre as coberturas analisadas.

Abstract: The paper draws attention to Le Corbusier's first trip to the American continent, with a particular focus on his visions and expectations built before the corporeal dislocation to the New World in September 1929. This approach suggests not only an investigation of one single voyage, but of multiple ones, and above all intellectual ones. Voyages that cross biographies, discourses and practices – in a public and intimate scale – which are attentive to a history embodied in its social actors allowing a confrontation of materials that transcends the so called architectural field. It examines one critical moment of ruptures in Le Corbusier's production (1925-1930), and works across the architectural discussions at that time, placing Le Corbusier in a wider web of reciprocal influences and circulation of ideas in order to help to construct a sense of the fragmented, or even silenced, discourses within the artistic and architectural debates in the late twenties. Such an approach not only allows new interpretations but also the establishment of a new periodization on Le Corbusier's knowledge of- and interests in- the Americas, as well as the narratives produced. Resumen: El artículo llama la atención sobre el primer viaje de Le Corbusier al continente americano, con un foco particular en las visiones del arquitecto y sus expectativas construidas antes del ‘desplazamiento corpóreo’ al nuevo mundo en septiembre de 1929. Desde esta perspectiva, proponemos investigar no sólo un viaje, sino múltiples viajes, y sobre todo los ‘viajes mentales’. En otras palabras, examinamos viajes que cruzan biografías, discursos y prácticas, en una escala privada y también pública. Atentos a una historia encarnada en los actores sociales, nos permitimos una confrontación de documentos que extienden el campo de la arquitectura. Analizamos así un momento crítico y de rupturas en la producción de Le Corbusier (1925-1930), situándolo en una amplia red de sociabilidad y debates en los últimos años de la década de 1920, cuyas influencias, afinidades y circulación de ideas se entrelazan. Al trabajar con este abordaje, posibilitamos nuevas interpretaciones y también el establecimiento de una nueva periodización de Le Corbusier y su relación con las Américas. A gestão de inovação estabelece métodos para gerar valor as empresas, por meio da concretização de ideias, que inovam uma pré-existente, ou que tiram projetos dos papeis. É responsável por sistematizar o processo de inovação nas empresas, determinando quantas etapas, quais as rotinas, recursos humanos, materiais, financeiros e tecnológicos serão aplicados nele, estabelecendo a estrutura que será adotada para realizá-lo e gerar resultados. No mundo atual, globalizado, onde os clientes estão cada vez mais exigentes e a oferta de produtos e serviços cada vez mais vasta, inovar se tornou uma questão essencial para que as empresas não percam em competitividade ou venham a fechar as portas por não mais satisfazer seus clientes. Das menores às maiores empresas, todas vem buscando alcançar a inovação e gerindo projeto para alcançar a mesma, e algumas organizações até se denominam inovadoras. Porém para a academia existem diversas definições para a inovação e delimitações desse processo de gestão que devem ser conhecidas antes de colocá-la em prática, para que os objetivos em questão sejam realmente alcançados. O presente trabalho apresenta a relação entre gestão de inovação, planejamento estratégico e gestão de projetos, buscando explicá-la e demonstrar a aplicação desses termos na prática realizando um estudo de caso sobre a implantação do serviço de lavagem de material contaminado na lavanderia V.L, localizada na cidade de Nova Andradina – MS, região rodeada porpostos de gasolina, usinas de açúcar e álcool e frigoríficos. Tal estudo de caráter qualitativo e quantitativo foi realizado para fins estratégicos, levantando caraterísticas da empresa e quantificando equipamentos e valores, para analisar se existia a viabilidade da empresa atender a demanda da região em atendimento a NR 6, na intenção de que a V.L lave os uniformes profissionais, caracterizados pela norma regulamentadora citada, como EPIs. Como resultados do serviço estudado encontrou-se uma possibilidade de reduzir o custo total da empresa em 71% onde o custo para a lavagem de cada peçaera de R$ 2,33 passando a custar para a empresa R$ 1,65 após a implantação doserviço. A partir dos resultados apresentados, pode-se concluir que será sim viável aimplantação dessa nova prestação de serviço. Porém ainda serão precisos muitos estudos para decidir qual a melhor forma de tratar o efluente que será gerado pela nova atividade da empresa, uma vez visto que os artigos e pesquisas encontradas, dentro de 18 meses de pesquisa, ainda não trouxeram respostas satisfatórias.
