Local participation in environmental decision making processes is a recognized need if the goals of sustainable development are to be met. Spatial information is an important part of environmental decision making, but so far, technical barriers have prevented effective public participation in spatial data management and analysis. These barriers need to be overcome if participants are to take part in a decision making process in a manner that is both fair and competent. It could also be a source for atmospheric information in the past and hence a key in climate research. Abstract:
The paucity of polliniferous deposits on the British chalklands has left something of a vacuum in the known vegetational history of the British Isles. Conflicting ideas of the past landscape of the chalklands have been presented by archaeologists (e.g. Clark, 1936) and botanists (e.g. Tansley, 1939; Pigott and Walters, 1954). The Tansleyan view, i.e. that the chalklands were forested until the Bronze Age, has held sway. Tansley suggested that the dominant species were Quercus and Fraxinus. This was challenged by the view that Tilia may have been a dominant on basic soils (Merton, 1970). Such p

A series of USACE atlas quadrangles and dee pborings from the USGS and LGS with radiocarbon dated peats were used to construct several regional crosssections and paleogeographic reconstructions. Late Pleistocene glaciation and consequent lowered sea leve lresulted in reentrenchment of the Mississippi River incised valley. Meltwater floods from proglacial lakes incised into older deposits followed by braided fluvial (substratum) aggradation due to reduced carrying capacity after floods followed by meandering fluvial(topstratum aggradation as fluvial gradients and discharge decreased. Abstract:
Lake Vanda is a meromictic, permanently ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a polar desert in Southern Victorialand Antarctica. This area experiences very little rainfall and very cold average temperatures, around –20°C. Lake Vanda has an unusual limnological profile, with a sharp physical and chemical gradient at about 60 m where the water transitions from cold, oxic, and fresh, to warm, hypersaline, and sulfidic; CaCl2 rather than NaCl is the dominant salt. Aerobic enrichment techniques were used to isolate what turned out to be several strains of a s
