Abstract:

During a rescue excavation in the village of Magoula near Sparta, a pit was revealed which contained a heap of fragments of large and small vessels, the products of an unglazed ware pottery workshop. This paper presents the distinctive features of the workshop; the characteristic incised decoration on the strap-handle is considered its ‘trade mark’. The operation of the workshop is dated to the first half or the middle of the 12th cent., and its production is identified in large closed vessels (stamnia) and small jugs for everyday use.

Fragments of a large Black-Glazed Cup with part of an incised inscription are published. A datec.590—570 is suggested. A second, slightly earlier cup from the Menelaion is included. The inscription refers to the cult of Zeus Messapeus attested in the sources. Discussion centres on the location of the cult-place and the origin of the cult. It is suggested that it derives from the region of Messapia in South Italy where the Spartan colony of Taras was situated.

A fragmentary temple model from Sparta, in which the roof and one pediment are preserved, provides new evidence for reconstructing the system of Lakonian roofing. The ridge and Lakonian tiles as well as disc akroteria are modelled in high relief; a painted gorgoneion decorates the surviving pediment. The possibility is discussed that it represents a very small type of temple that may have existed at Sparta. A date in the first half of the 6th cent. BC is suggested.

The aim of this study is to estimate the environmental impacts in case of exploitation the Pellanalignites for power generation. The object of the study is to predict the element mobility during lignite combustion using mineralogical and geochemical data from bulk-lignite samples and their ashes of two cores from this area.
