Full textThe main purpose of the project was to identify potential environmentally harmful substances which can be leached from rubber asphalt. A method for analysing asphalt was developed and three rubber asphalt materials were analysed after being cryogrinded. One of the materials was also tested in a road machine made for testing of asphalt paving. The particles created in the machine were analysed in the same manner as the cryogrinded asphalt materials.
The asphalt materials were leached by water during 24 hours. The leachates were extracted with dichloromethane, dried with sodium sulphate and concentrated to a small volume. The extracts were analysed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Due to low concentrations of substances the GC-MS was operated in SIM-mode (Selected Ion Monitoring). Thirteen substances were chosen for the analysis. The substances were aniline, benzothiazole, butyl benzyl phthalate, bisphenol-A, decanoic acid, dibutyl phthalate, diethylhexyl phthalat, phenanthrene, chrysene, naphthalene, 4-n-nonyl phenol and 4-tert-octyl phenol. Benzothiazole and 4-tert-octyl phenol were detected and quantified in the leachates.
In addition to the analysis of organic substances, pH was measured too. The leachates produced in this project were also sent to an analysis company for several analyses, for example analysis of metals and sulphur. Toxicity tests were performed on the same leachates within an exam work made by Gro Runeman at Lund University. The results of the metal analysis, sulphur analysis, and toxicity tests are not covered within the scope of this report. For the results of these tests and analyses, see Gro Runeman’s report: Evaluating toxicity of asphalt leachates.
Detta examensarbete är utfört vid Statens Geotekniska Institut (SGI). Huvudsyftet med arbetet är att identifiera potentiellt miljöfarliga ämnen som kan laka ut från gummiasfalt. En metod för analys av asfalt har tagits fram och tre olika gummiasfalter har analyserats efter att ha kryomalts. En av dessa asfalter har också använts i en provvägmaskin där det damm som bildades har samlats upp och analyserats. Inom ramen för examensarbetet har också en litteraturstudie gjorts för att bland annat ta reda på vad som är gjort inom området sedan tidigare.
För att ta reda på vad asfalten innehåller för föreningar gjordes först en fastfasextraktion av krossad (ej kryomald) asfalt där diklormetan användes som lösningsmedel. Från början var tanken att en GC/MS-screening skulle göras för att på så sätt få en överblick av samtliga organiska ämnen som finns i asfalten men på grund av de väldigt låga halterna av i gaskromatografen analyserbara föreningar var det nödvändigt att begränsa analysen till några få föreningar. De föreningar som analysen inriktade sig mot var anilin, bensotiazol, bensylbutylftalat, bisfenol-A, dekansyra, dibutylftalat, di(etylhexyl)ftalat, fenantren, krysen, naftalen, 4-n-nonylfenol, pentaklortiofenol och 4-tert-oktylfenol.
Laktester utfördes genom att de kryomalda asfaltmaterialen lakades med vatten under 24 timmar. Efter extraktion, torkning och koncentrering analyserades lakextrakten med avseende på de föreningar som hittats vid fastfasextraktionen. I lakvattnen hittades bensotiazol samt 4-tert-oktylfenol. Dessa föreningar kvantifierades genom att en enpunktskalibrering gjordes.
Utöver analyserna ovan mättes även pH på lakvattnen. Lakvattnen skickades också på metall- och svavelanalys samt turbiditets- och fenolindexmätning till ett större analysföretag. Toxicitetstester har utförts på samma lakvatten av Gro Runeman inom ramen för ett examensarbete vid Lunds Universitet. För resultaten från toxicitetstester, metallanalyser samt turbiditets- och fenolindexmätningar hänvisas till Gro Runemans rapport: Evaluating toxicity of asphalt leachates. Delar av denna rapport är skrivna i samarbete med Gro Runeman.

Full textPrimarily mined and extracted metals are in nature often found together with many other metals in ores and minerals. Therefore, waste from the metal industry might have a varied content of many different metals. These metals are often harmful to the environment and can cause problems. For the metal producers, there is a problem if the metal content in their waste is higher than what is accepted on landfills. There are accurate metallurgical processes to recover the valuable metals from the waste and produce a slag with a low metal content that also is leach stable. Such a leach stable slag might have environmental advantages though it could replace natural material such as gravel as a filler or in other construction purposes. In this project, two slags resulting from the treatment of metal-containing wastes has been studied. For both slags, the metal content and the leachability were analyzed and the results were compared against some selected criteria. The waste regulation declares limits for the total content of metals for which the waste can be considered non-hazardous. Also, there is acceptance criteria on landfills for waste in different hazard classes. The acceptance criteria describes limits for the concentration of metals in the leachate at L/S ratio of 0.1 l/kg, and the cumulative leached amount at L/S ratio of 10 l/kg. The leachability was studied with two different methods. At an accredited laboratory, a standardized percolation test was made. In such tests, material is packed in a column and then slowly perfused with water. The concentration of various substances is measured in the leachate when predetermined volumes of water has passed through the column and can then be converted into leached amount. It is only the results of such a test that can be used to classify material according to local landfill criteria. A cheaper and easier method which can be used for comparison testing is a two stage batch test. In these tests, a weighed amount of material is shaken with a given water volume for a given time. Four repeated attempts were made for each slag and the leachates was sent to the same laboratory for analysis. The concentration in the leachate were measured and could be counted on to leached metal variety. Some differences between the two methods was noticed, but low leached amounts were measured all over and the materials met almost all criteria in order to be accepted at landfills for inert waste. The results of the percolation test showed lower leached amounts than the results of the batch test. This can be explained by the longer contact time between the water and materials in the bottles. There, an abrasion of the material that uncovers new leachable surfaces occurs. In the column, there is always new water that comes in contact with the material. Extended testing should be done to determine the total content of metals in the slags before deciding to use them in any application. Slags should not be utilized in a water protection area or other place where there is a risk for contamination of any sensitive water.

Full textThe construction industry deals with large quantities of construction waste. The waste is difficult to manage because of large amounts. Residual waste that comes from a construction site is recycled. Waste from construction and demolition includes many different types of pollutants causing environmental pollution. Hazardous substances likely to leach into the soil and into the wild. Structor have been thinking about if tile and clinkers tiles really are deposited in the right way today from construction waste and demolition. The purpose of this work is to investigate whether tile and clinker contains metals that can be harmful to the environment. The contents in the surface layers were measured and by performing leaching tests, we could analyze the leakage from materials in different surroundings. The samples proved that tile and clinker have high level of metals in the materials that can be given off to the environment at low pH. The conclusion from the leaching tests is that if the tiles are handled properly in the neutral or alkaline environment, it is not harmful to the environment because all results of leaching tests at pH values between eight and ten were within limits. But we see a danger if tiles end up in an acidic environment that has a low pH of around five to six. Then the tiles are not inert waste and therefore should not be handled like that. Tiles should thus not be used to such as aggregate, but it should be deposited as is done today. The work is largely based on discussions and conversations with Structor in Örebro and MTM at Örebro University.

Full textIn a purely practical application of circular economics it is necessary to have knowledge of how to convert a used material into a new product. This may include legislation, but there is also a need to ensure that it cannot cause negative health or environmental consequences. Swerock strives to be able to produce circular aggregate material of surplus material from various projects, which leads to the question of how this can be environmentally assessed. Through a literature study, a compilation of knowledge was made to answer the question about which test methods Swerock can use to test materials for use in road constructions to ensure that danger to humans and the environment is avoided. The literature study in this thesis covers, inter alia, legislation, reports, studies and government documents to build a basis for a proposal for an environmental assessment procedure. A comparison was also made between the provided test results of leaching test samples from Swerock and compiled content limits from the literature. This was to illustrate the current situation and get an idea of the levels and substances that different actors have set limits for and in what ways. The study has shown that leaching tests are common for assessing the environmental impact of different types of materials and also as an approach among the End of Waste criteria. Ecotoxicological tests have not been found to be as commonly applied but have been highlighted by studies as a suitable complement to leaching tests. From the literature study, the Swedish system BASTA emerged as a way of assessing hazard in building materials, where it is based on CLP's hazard statements for health and environmental hazards. These three parts have been compiled in the environmental assessment proposal presented in the results section. One conclusion that can be made is that the work on the question of the production of circular aggregate materials is in its infancy and that there are opportunities for further studies on the subject.

Full textSolubility and transport of rare earth elements in the mine tailings of Källfallsfältet Hugo de Campos Pereira The mechanisms which govern the solubility of rare earth elements (REEs) in sulfide-containing tailings at the former mine site of Källfallsfältet (Västmanland, Sweden) were studied by the means of soil water and ground water sampling, leaching tests and geochemical modeling using Visual MINTEQ ver. 3.0. The results showed that weathering of sulfides is the primary process governing pH in the tailings, and thus also REE solubility. However, weathering of sulfides is no source for REE in itself since the elements are not bound in sulfides, which the oxidized availability test NT ENVIR 006 showed. Instead REE are released into solution by weathering of easily weathered silicates. Usually, metal bound in silicate form is not considered geochemically active. A kinetic (time dependent) factor, associated with the weathering of silicates, was found to affect pH and thus also metal solubility in leaching tests performed on the tailings. The standardized pH static leaching test (SIS-CEN/TS 14997) showed limitations in observing kinetic effects because of its relatively short equilibration time (48 h). Thus, in future studies with similar materials, leaching test kinetics should be taken into account when comparing leached concentrations with field measured concentrations. Acid titration and one step batch test (SIS-CEN ISO/TS 21268-2:2010) proved to be applicable and relatively well applicable to the tailings, respectively, in order to estimate soil solution concentrations. Speciation calculations using Visual MINTEQ ver. 3.0 showed that pH and DOC concentration are the most important factors which affect REE speciation in soil solution, ground water and surface water associated with the tailings. In acid sulfate rich solutions, low in DOC, speciation is dominated by sulfate complexes, mainly (REE)SO4+, followed by free dissolved ions as the second most common form. These results are in accordance with previous modeling studies of REE speciation in acid sulfate rich waters resulting from tailings. This, together with previous results showing that REE ecotoxicity seems to follow the free ion model, implies that the toxicity of the elements is expected to increase with decreasing pH value.
