Abstract:
Mary Ann Lamb is a Romantic poet whose work in the literature of English was in the shadows, though she was the sister of Charles Lamb. This diminished image of Mary could also be because of her being caught hold of the Bipolar Disorder, on one such onset she stabbed her own mother Elizabeth Lamb. It was her brother who was her guardian and also brought her into the field of writing. The works done by Mary was always in collaboration with Charles. This collaboration made the sister and brother to bring three major works for juvenile literature which are namely Tales from Shakespeare, Mrs Leicester’s School, and Poetry for Children. This paper is done in order to establish and explore the poem “The End of May.” to show the writing style of Mary.

Abstract:
This study aims at characterizing C. Lamb's individual manner through the description of the inner structures of the text. The analysis of the specific elements of the familiar essay as a literary "genre" first gives us an idea of the essayist's personal mark as compared with the essayists of the period. We apply Riffaterre's method both to the analysis of lexical, syntactical and rhythmical effects and to that of the imagery, intertextual relations and emphatic and magnifying effects. With the study of the various themes which are mainly brought out through the examination of keywords and the description of the contexts in which they occur, we go deeper into the semantical aspect of the language and hence into the author's thought and deep personality. Lamb's style is then considered as the result of a long evolution through the examination of his letters and manuscripts and through the description of the part played by imagination in the process of literary composition. We conclude by emphasizing the poetical aspect of the essays. The text demands linguistic, stylistic and cultural competence of the reader and particularly of the modern reader

Abstract:
The present study aims to provide a carefully annotated translation of the second series of the Essays of Elia which appeared in English periodical magazines between 1820 and 1833. In order to be as complete as possible, this translation includes the passages removed by the author when they were published in book form in 1833. Particular attention has been paid to French translations of individual Elia essays scattered in mid-nineteenth century French magazines as well as to more modern translations of the collected Essays, up to the present day. The Last Essays of Elia was Lamb’s final published work. It was very tempting to look for threads running through his work from the early writings to the LEE. In the critical introduction, we have sought to consider the various aspects of the work of Lamb, who was at the same time a poet, a journalist, a playwright, a theatre critic and a letter-writer before making his name as an essay-writer, breathing new life into the genre, thanks to the Elia persona. The fact that Lamb was a friend of the first English Romantic poets and that his life was blighted by his mother’s murder at the hands of his beloved sister, brings a vivid interest to his work. An isolated figure of Romanticism, a "very reasonable Romantic" himself, a humourist in love with the books and language of the past, Lamb, though a relatively minor author, remains a key link to understanding the early nineteenth-century English literary scene

Abstract:
This study challenges Charles Lamb's 1811 essay "On the Tragedies of Shakespeare, Considered with Reference to their Fitness for Stage Representation," which argues that Shakespeare's plays are better suited for reading than stage production. Each of the four chapters considers a specific argument Lamb raises against the theatre and the particular Shakespearean tragedy used to illustrate his point. The Hamlet chapter examines the supposed concessions involved in the actor/audience relationship. The Macbeth chapter challenges Lamb's Platonic view of Shakespearean characterization. The Othello chapter considers whether some characters and images, while acceptable to the reader's imagination, are improper on stage. Finally, the King Lear chapter considers the portrayal of the mind in the theatre, employing semiotic principles to examine the actor's expressive resources.

Sohawon, Farzanah. Paris 7, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA070037.

Full text
Abstract:
The French editions (1837-2005) of Charles (1775-1834) and Mary (1764-1847) Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare (1807), their great number and their high quality, prove that this work's integration in the French bibliographical and publishing scène has been a success. Although it has a strong cultural connotation - this classic of English literature, taking the form of an adaptation which turns into tales twenty plays by William Shakespeare, is to be « submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare » , French publishers have managed to fit it to their purposes and to present it as a book likely to interest French readers. This cultural transfer has been helped by the publishing of the Tales into school books (from the 1880s) and, concerning general editions for children, by Shakespeare's celebrity and the tales' educational and entertaining nature. This thesis attempts to understand why this work has attracted so many French publishers, to what purpose they have published it, how they have adapted it for French readers. We examine the French editions in the context of school books and children's books publishing history, their makers (publishers, teachers, preface writers, translators, illustrators), and the collections they belong to. We study the books as objects, their « paratext » 1 (covers, title pages, prefaces, introductions, notes, footnotes, illustrations), the choice of publishing all the taies or just a selection, and the exploitation of some translations. This helps defîne the image of Taies from Shakespeare established by the French publishing world, a positive image owing a lot to the tales' nature which simplifies Shakespeare's work

Abstract:
An absolute measurement of the Is Lamb shift in hydrogenlike chromium has been made to a precision of 0.7%, using an EBIT and a curved crystal spectrometer in the Johann geometry. The measured value of the Lamb shift is 3.030(15) eV. This represents the most precise Is Lamb shift measurement ever made on a highly charged ion. The measurement utilized the Lyman 0:1,2 transitions using manganese and chromium J(0: and J({3 as calibration lines. A measurement was also made of the difference in the Is Lamb shift of chromium and titanium to a precision of 6%, yielding a difference of 0.779(41)eV. This was made by measuring the Lymano: and Balmer {3 difference of hydrogenlike chromium and titanium, respectively, a large portion of which is due to QED. A new injection technique has been developed where neutral atoms formed as a result of laser ablation are injected in to the EBIT. This technique is shown to be comparable with l\UVOC injection in terms of the number of hydrogenlike vanadium ions formed in the EBIT. Laser ablation injection has also been demonstrated with tin, lead and stainless steel also being successfully injected and trapped in the EBIT.

Abstract:
Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) used in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications are able to detect structural damage using Lamb waves. PWAS are small, lightweight, unobtrusive and inexpensive. PWAS achieve direct transduction between electric and elastic wave energies. PWAS are essential elements in the Lamb-wave SHM with pitch-catch, pulse-echo, phased array system and electromechanical impedance methods. PWAS are charge mode sensors and they can be used as both transmitters and receivers. A model of PWAS is shown in this paper. In vibration, impact detections applications, the PWAS response is strong due to the large dynamic change of strain. In pitch-catch, pulse-echo and phased array applications, PWAS are used to generate and receive Lamb waves and the PWAS response is small. A charge amplifier for PWAS applications is introduced in this paper. PWAS are normally made of piezoceramic Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT). The structural integrity tests require attachment of PWAS to the material surface and there are critical applications where the rigid piezoceramic wafers cannot conform to curved surfaces. As alternative one can use flexible piezopolymer such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF); such PVDF-PWAS have been studied in this paper. PVDF-PWAS were mounted on a cantilever beam for the free vibration test and on a long rod for the longitudinal impact test. The experimental results of the PZT-PWAS and PVDF-PWAS have been compared with the conventional strain gauge. The theoretical and experimental results in this study gave the basic demonstration of the piezoelectricity of PZT-PWAS and PVDF-PWAS.

Abstract:
Abstract A large percentage of petroleum reserves are located in carbonate reservoirs, which can be divided into limestone, chalk and dolomite. Roughly the oil recovery from carbonates is below the 30% due to the strong oil wetness, low permeability, abundance of natural fractures, and inhomogeneous rock properties Austad (2013). Injection of adjusted brine chemistry into carbonate reservoirs has been reported to increase oil recovery by 5-30% of the original oil in place in field tests and core flooding experiments. Previous studies have shown that adjusted waterflooding recovery in carbonate reservoirs is dependent on the composition and ionic strength of the injection brine (Morrow et al. 1998; Zhang 2005). Many research works have focused on the role of the brine composition in altering the initial wettability state of carbonate rock, which is usually intermediate- to oil-wet. Crude oils contain carboxyl group, -COOH, that can be found in the resin and asphaltenes fractions. The negatively charged carboxyl group, -COOH bond very strongly with the positively charged, sites on the carbonate surface. The carbonate surface, which is positively charged is believed to adsorb the SO42− that is negatively charged. On the other side cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ bind to the negatively charged carboxylic group and release it from the surface. In this study we use a closed system geochemical model to study the effect of the surface-charge dominant species; Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO42− on the carbonate surfaces at 80 °C. The proposed geochemical interactions can possibly lead to a change in the surface charge, altering wettability of the rock by exchanging ions/cations. Brines with various concentrations of Mg2+ and SO42− were prepared in the lab and contact angle between carbonate substrate and crude oil was measured using a rising/captive bubble tensiometer at 80 °C. The composition of the carbonate system was collected from previous literature review and the composition of adjusted brines was used to build a surface sorption database to develop a geochemical model. This model is focused on identifying the reaction paths and the surface behavior that may represent the real system. Changes in carbonate surface wettability were further evaluated using a series of contact angle experiments. Experimental observations and modeling results are concordant and imply that SO42− ions may alter the wettability of carbonate surface at high temperature.
