Abstract:
Sandwiched between the American Revolution and the Civil War,the War of 1812 seldom merits our attention. Except for the burning of Washington and Jackson’s after-the-fact victory at New Orleans, few people know or remember much about it. To be honest, American military forces were not very successful during the conflict save for the warships of the tiny U. S. Navy. In singleship battles during the war, the Americans beat the British, the world’s greatest naval power, in six of seven encounters. The U.S.S. ABSTRACT In early 1916 the African American community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, mounted a resistance to the planned showing of D.W. Griffith's film The Birth of a Nation. Lancaster serves as a case study for this event, mirroring a wider national turmoil over race catalyzed by the film's release. This story reflects the changing attitudes of how Americans viewed the Civil War and Reconstruction at the start of the twentieth century, both in film and in real life.

Four British copper coins, three halfpennies and a farthing, recovered from the wreck of the sloop-of-war HMS Swift (1770), were analyzed. The application of scanning electron microscopy with the aid of an energy dispersive X-ray detector (SEM-EDAX), and wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) allowed the determination, by nondestructive means, of a set of diagnostic features. The specimens identified as halfpennies present a dendritic microstructure, typical of a process of melting and casting, and a copper alloy with varying amounts of tin, zinc, iron and lead. Abstract A 1764 manuscript petition, a “humble Petition” from Lancaster County, differs substantially from the published Remonstrance that has been taken to represent the views of the Paxton Boys, who murdered 20 Native Americans in Lancaster County and attempted to destroy 140 more in the Philadelphia Barracks. The Remonstrance, which began with a Whiggish demand for increased legislative representation for frontier counties, has led historians to describe the Paxton Boys as frontier democrats who marched on Philadelphia to present grievances to the provincial government. This methodology is limited to systems in which two oligonucleotides are annealed together. To circumvent this limitation and also to explore single-strand dynamics a new methodology was implemented, double spin-labeling. Double spin-labeled single-stranded RNA was investigated as a single-strand and within a duplex via MALDI-TOF-MS, EPR spectroscopy and RP-HPLC. Abstract Before the French and Indian War Pennsylvania had made only one attempt to form a provincial militia. In 1747, during King George’s War, Benjamin Franklin organized an “Association” to defend Pennsylvania in the event of an attack by French-allied Indians. This volunteer force did not enjoy formal recognition from the government, it provided no pay, and the men elected their own officers. “Associators” in Lancaster County followed Franklin’s example, creating two voluntary military companies east and west of the Susquehanna River. Abstract Lancaster Countians had always been proud of their home, for its rural character and its prosperity. In rural communities across the United States, the decades after World War II left rurality and prosperity increasingly irreconcilable, but not so in Lancaster. Agriculture remained supreme, while new industries—not the least of which was tourism—provided thousands of new jobs. While sons and daughters of farmers elsewhere headed for the city in search of work, native Lancaster Countians could stay home. But success, too, had a price. Abstract On November 9, 1861, while Du Pont was writing Fox that his success at Port Royal was “more complete and more brilliant than I ever could have believed,” the twelve-gun sloop-of-war San Jacinto was cruising slowly in the Old Bahama Channel, off the north coast of Cuba, where the deep water south of the Great Bahama Bank narrowed to a width of less than fifteen miles. Named for the battle that had secured the independence of Texas in 1836, the San Jacinto was a fifteen-year-old screw steamer that had been ordered to take part in Du Pont’s attack on Port Royal.

Abstract What had begun in 1453 as an attempt to alter the balance of power in Yorkshire by force became after St Albans a feud which was to be inextricably bound up with the developing politics of the whole realm, and was not to burn itself out until after many more deaths and a change of dynasty. From that day in May 145 5 the fortunes of Neville were inseparable from those of York. At first the family benefited from the fruits of victory. He viewed the trust placed in him with an elevated sense of moral responsibility not widely shared by other San Francisco bankers. These reveal the workings of his mind and broader mental affinities. Sherman had really re-dedicated himself to

Until the twentieth century, soldiers were lucky to survive military medicine. Basic treatments included the cauterizing of wounds and the removal of limbs to prevent gangrene.
