Full textDuring the beginning of the 19th century Sweden is effected by the Napoleonic Wars and in the aftermath of the war Sweden looses Finland to Russia. This loss leads to the dismissal of King Gustav IV Adolf and the introduction of the Bernadotte dynasty on the Swedish throne. Over the century the industrialization plays a big part in the progress of Sweden. The growth of the industries leads to developments in the areas of agriculture. With this essay I would like to examine if the people on the countryside of Gotland keep the same pace as the people on the mainland in their introduction of new things. Is it possible to see any new innovations on the southern part of Gotland in estate inventories from the period between year 1840 to 1900, and if so which? I will also try to examine which part of the society, social class, leads the introduction of the modern things. The material I have used is estate inventories from three parishes on the southern Gotland. To ease the examination I have divided people and things into different groups. This has helped me to see the difference between people and things, and it has also helped me to see which society class it was that introduced modern things. New crops, new tools and a new way to cultivate are some of the improvements that we can see in the areas concerning agriculture. Example of new tool that are developed during this time is the “turning” plough and “claw” harrow. There are also developments in other parts of the society, like in the textile industry. Cotton becomes more frequently used and the textile goes from being expensive to be used by all classes. My conclusion is, with some exceptions, that the countryside on Gotland has, more or less, the same development pace as the countryside on the mainland of Sweden.

Full textGeographically, Sweden is a relatively large country with a small population, where the rural area is sparsely populated with long distances between cities and towns. Rural conditions have changed gradually over many years and challenges have occurred - such as depopulation, an aging population as well as difficulties in maintaining basic community services such as school and healthcare. In order to maintain a functioning rural area, a basic infrastructure for communication and transport is needed, and here the interaction with autonomous vehicles is mentioned as a potential solution - but the solution can be both difficult and costly to achieve. In this Bachelor's thesis the aim is to analyse and discuss how autonomous vehicles can be a solution, where the development of autonomous vehicles are today, what the current conditions are for implementation, both technically and politically. Also pros and cons of different solutions will be discussed. The method used for the Bachelor's thesis is a literature study in which information search was done in various data search bases to investigate what previously has been done in the area. Also, supplementary interviews have been conducted with professionals in the subject area along with a small interview study. Based on the literature study in the field of autonomous vehicles, a large part of previous research and development work points to the potential that exists in technology and to the sustainability benefits that can be obtained. Several players in different areas are driving the development forward, and today many research and development projects are underway with tests with fully self-driving vehicles around the world. At present, research on autonomous vehicles in rural areas is limited, but autonomous vehicles have great potential to contribute to maintaining a vibrant rural future. There are still some obstacles and challenges to the implementation of autonomous vehicles, such that the technology must be sufficiently tested and that the interaction with the digital and physical infrastructure need to be reliable. More evidence will also be needed regarding laws and regulations with the rapid development of technology and investigations around the economy for costs and cost distributions, i.e. new business models, will be necessary. The users' attitude does not show any clear resistance when it comes to the use of autonomous vehicles, but rather the major challenge will be about the added value that the autonomous solutions must create to change the travel habits of rural people. It can be concluded that in the future a large part of the traffic will either be fully or partially autonomous. Probably, automated solutions in the countryside will be realized soon and thereby contributing to a living countryside.

Full textAccording to a survey made in spring 2012, Sweden is the fastest urbanizing country in Europe. While we are witnessing how the countryside gradually defoliates, questions about the future relationship between the densely populated and almost deserted parts of the country, are being raised. What external conditions are the urban expansion depending on - and what role is assigned to the non-urban? The project can be described as a study of the future rural areas of Sweden, based on 4 future scenarios - The era of the large-scale industries, Country life, Return of the village communities and The exotic nature reserve.

Full textIn a city region like Stockholm were the population growth and the economic growth is high is it clear that the city is seen as the one place for development. The city is seen as the primary object of urban and regional development. Today in Sweden, rural areas are often marginalized and located in the periphery and there are tensions between the city and the countryside. In the media, an increasingly stronger urban perspective is visible, which can affect priorities in major decisions. While the city centre is often seen as a solution to various problems, especially ecological and is seen as a major part of a positive economic development. The aim of this thesis is to contribute knowledge about the role of place identity in the comprehensive plan and to problematize how rural areas are presented in the comprehensive plan. Using the qualitative methods qualitative content analysis, literature study and semi-structured interviews, this work intends to be a contribution in the discussion around the city as the major focus in planning. A case study of the municipalities of Norrtälje and Upplands-Bro will be used to show the problematics using place identity and place marketing in comprehensive planning. Place is so much more than just a position on a map. It is intertwined with emotions, activities, memories and physical qualities. These together with people’s relationships with each other, other places and other identities that define the place identity of that place. The comprehensive plan is often the only document that affect the countryside. Which increase the importance to study this plan in relation to rural areas. It has become more and more popular for municipalities to use place marketing. The use of place identity and place marketing is often criticized for being undemocratic, as they increase the risk the risk of places and people feel like they don’t belong in the picture that the municipality presents. For the municipality, it becomes a becomes a case of balancing the place identity that they choose to present. The place identity in the comprehensive plan emerges mainly through aspects that are considered attractive by the municipality. These are often linked to physical qualities that are not considered to change. Place identity is difficult to define, and it is only a fraction of it that is shown in the comprehensive plan because identity is largely based of social relations. The role of place identity is to market and display a positive image of the municipality in some way. Studying place identity is incredibly complex as identity is something that is individual and differs from human to human. A document like the comprehensive plan are only able to capture a fraction of what constitutes the entire municipality. The countryside is described mainly as a place to be preserved and for others to enjoy

Full textThe transport sector currently accounts for about one third of Sweden's total greenhouse gas emissions and together with the European Union's policy, the goal is to reduce the climate impact from a 2-degree target, through a common legislation. Västra Götaland has compiled energy and climate targets, starting in 2030, independence of fossil energy for the western Swedish economy will arise in a sustainable trade and industry. Orust municipality plans to monitor the targets by increasing the proportion of fossil free fuels, increasing the number of public transports, but also reducing the total amount of transport. In many cases, these goals can be achieved through an efficientization of existing resources, and this is what the bachelor thesis gets its actuality. By seeing how and why bus traffic can be coordinated to transport packages and smaller goods with individuals are the objectives of this thesis. In order to investigate the possibility of implementing bus consolidation, extensive literature studies have been carried out, which are based on how different distribution strategies affect the efficiency variables cost, time and load factor. The efficiency variables are considered indirectly through the study but fulfill an important role, as the result is based on how well they are met. In order to further see the possibility of introducing bus consolidation, the study is complemented with qualitative interviews which are aimed at investigating the interest with consolidation at various companies and transporters in the rural area. In order to provide a further dimension of consolidation with bus traffic, a survey was also conducted to study the pupils attitude and behavior towards the subject. Through the theoretical framework, the writers have stated the positive attitude of the companies and operators towards consolidation by bus traffic, in the form of a co-distribution project. By doing this, all participants can make use of bus consolidation as an effective way of shipping frequent deliveries of incoming and outgoing goods. Based on the theoretical framework, three different distribution strategies were formed that are possible to implement in rural areas. Milkrun with oneterminal, was presented as a possible solution in the current situation, since it is timebased and can be performed while buses are not used for other planned routes. However, the study shows that if resources can be added and more companies show interest in bus consolidation, a more suitable transport structure is hub & spoke distribution with milk runs. A more tailor-made transport structure in the form of a hybrid hub & spoke system with milk runs is presented as the most favorable transport system to optimally benefit from the utilization rate of buses. This system requires a more complex information sharing between different actors and is significantly more costly, but in the future it can contribute to the shipment of packages and smaller goods in a sustainable and efficient manner.

Full textBackground: Västerbottens interior and 11 of the 14 ambulance stations have average distances exceeding 90 km per mission. The distance that exists in rural areas and in near-urban rural areas means long run-up times for the patients and even longer time before arrival to the nearest health care unit or hospital. There are long distances, especially in the Earlier studies has shown that it`s better with the "scoop and run" than "stay and play" when the journey time to the nearest emergency hospital was short. However, when it was long transport times or if the prehospital work took place in rural areas and in near-urban rural areas, there was a need for more advanced technology in the ambulance and that the medical treatment will be started. Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe ambulance nurses experiences of working in the ambulance service in rural and near-urban rural areas. Method: Seven registered nurses with experience of having worked in the ambulance for at least 2 years in Västerbotten in south Lapland were interviewed by qualitative research. The transcript was analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in 2 categories; A great responsibility and Resources- an asset. Working in rural and near-urban rural areas was a challenging job with a lot of solitary work. Help from other resources as other ambulances and ambulance helicopters were available, but many times were these resources inadequate because of the long distances and weather conditions. Conclusion: In conclusion, it seems that the ambulance service in rural and near-urban rural areas was a requirement filled job with great responsibility and occasionally a lot of planning around patient, concerning the logistics and coordination. Despite this perceived was working at a satisfactory level and fulfilling. However, the result of this study shows that there might be reason to dig deeper to develop investigate further in order to highlight any differences to work in big cities and rural areas. A development of the technical equipment in terms of visual technology for the ambulance service can also may need to be procured. Improved cooperation and specialization in emergency medical services in rural and near-urban rural areas, together with the rural medical center, in the primary care, Västerbotten, and between emergency physicians and physicians with higher medical expertise, could lead to more qualified assessments and appropriate action at an even earlier stage

Full textMany of the poorest people on earth live in rural areas and are dependent on small-scale farming for their survival. The United Nations sees it as key to improve the productivity of these farms in order to reduce undernourishment in the world. Even though the literature has taken a big step forward on product development for developing countries during the past decade, there are still few studies on how to develop products for this specific group. This master thesis aims to state the success factors when developing products for people living in rural areas of Namibia. The empirical data is based on a product development project in northern Namibia as well as interviews with experts within the area. The product development project was carried out as a Minor Field Study during the summer of 2016 and the authors of this report spent two months in Namibia conducting both passive and active field studies. Since much of the existing literature claims to be general, this thesis starts off by analysing the existing literature to see how it applies in the Namibian context. The literature study together with the empirical findings are then formed into two categories of success factors when developing products for rural Namibia. The first category, project organisation, lists the success factors for how to set up a local product development project as a non-Namibian company or organisation. The second category, product design, lists the success factors linked to the actual product. By stating these success factors this thesis aims to be a support for small scale development projects carried out by a non-Namibian company or organisation targeting rural Namibia.Interesting findings are that the recommended production methods differ from what is recommended in previous literature. This report argues that the reason for this is the small scale perspective forced by Namibia’s low population density in contrast to India’s, from where most of the existing literature originates. This raise the need for further studies on small scale product development projects in rural areas to validate the findings of this report.

Full textSeveral of Sweden's rural areas today face major challenges with a declining population, as more and more people choose to settle down in cities and that the average age in rural areas is increasing. At the same time, community planning today largely focuses on urban environments and how we succeed in planning sustainable cities. This may be largely due to the larger proportion of the world's population living in cities compared to the proportion living in rural areas. This essay aims to investigate a Swedish municipality's work with rural development and how they worked with cooperation between the rural areas and the municipality in the planning to achieve sustainable development and vibrant countryside. The thesis is based on a case study of Örnsköldsvik municipality's rural planning.

40 arbetslag i två kommuner deltog i undersökningen.

Full textThe Swedish strategy for implementing a circular economy aims to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. However, academic literature is increasingly criticizing the circular economy concept for its lack of inclusion of social sustainability. With implementation measures already taking place economy-wide both nationally and in the EU, questions have been raised concerning its suitability to different regional contexts. Thus, this study aims to explore how the announced policies for circular economy are expected to affect social sustainability in urban and rural Swedish municipalities differently. A survey was conducted to elected officials in 37 Swedish municipalities. The results show that social sustainability aspects are generally not expected to be noticeably affected in the transition to circular economy. This could be due to its absence in the political conceptualization of the circular economy. Furthermore, we find that rural municipalities are generally more positive to the circular economy policies than their urban counterparts. We conclude by proposing that the Swedish political interpretation of the circular economy could be adjusted to support social Sustainable Development Goals more effectively.

Full textThe aim of the study was to examine how GIS-based multicriteria analysis can be used to propose a sustainable location for new buildings in rural areas. The Covid-19 pandemic has challenged behavior patterns and values. Social distancing and remote work have become the new normal and there is reason to believe that remote working will be more accepted when the pandemic is over. There was an upward trend of population growth in rural communities close to urban areas even before the Covid-19 pandemic. If the attraction for housing in rural communities increases, it will be important to consider how a new establishment of buildings can take place in a sustainable way. A case study was conducted over a small rural community. Focus for the study was identification of challenges from a sustainability point of view and conside-ration of the most important criteria when locating new houses. Place ana-lysis, questionnaire and interview were methods used to select criteria for the GIS-based multicriteria analysis, and evaluation of the results. A simplified sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the robustness of the chosen method and impact of criteria weighting on the result. Five sites with an area larger than 1000 m² were pointed out in the analysis as the most suitable for new housing. In the evaluation of the sites, they all turned out to have short-comings that were overlooked in the analysis. When the result was expanded to include even the second-best places, several of the places showed potential for new housing establishment. The conclusion of the study was that GIS-based multicriteria analysis involves many uncertainty factors and study area conditions must be considered then criteria choices are made for the result to be reliable. The result of the analysis needs to be carefully evaluated and de-cision-makers should not only concentrate on the places with the highest value in the analysis but maintain a broader perspective and evaluate the second-best places as well. A criteria spectrum including both environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainability increase the probability for the proposed locations to be truly sustainable. GIS-based multi-criteria analysis can be a valuable tool in finding a location as sustainable as possible for new housing in rural areas, if used correctly.
