Abstract:

To strengthen students' ability to solve landscape problems creatively while working in group settings, faculty members in the landscape contracting program at The Pennsylvania State Univ. incorporated experiential learning through the construction of on-campus landscape projects between 1992 and 1994. Collaborative student groups developed landscape plans and built the projects. Partnering with other university units resulted in benefits essential to completion of the projects. Student evaluations were shared between the instructor and the students. The success of these projects has led to plarming future experiential projects.

Abstract:

Industry input can assist postsecondary institutions as they strive to provide relevant knowledge and skill-building exercises for the professional development of their students. Using a mail questionnaire, we invited landscape contracting decision-makers to comment on the efficacy of landscape contracting curricula at colleges and universities. The population of Associated Landscape Contractors of America 2003 online member list (2049 companies) was organized into four strata based on company size. A stratified random sample of 400 companies was selected. We received 137 completed questionnaires (35% response rate). Most of the population was either satisfied or extremely satisfied (52%) with college graduates recently hired; only 8.1% of the population was dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied. When respondents were asked to consider four knowledge categories, a majority (53%) said recent graduates were deficient in business knowledge, followed by construction (25.1%), horticultural (9.6%), and design (5.1%) knowledge. When respondents were asked to rate the importance of topics that could be taught in undergraduate landscape contracting programs, business topics (personnel management, estimating and bidding, and clientele management) were identified as their top three choices. The population also named three business-related skills (client relationships, time management, and managing employees) among the five most important skills for landscape contracting professionals. Despite the stated importance of business knowledge and training, 68.3% of the population said when hiring for an entry-level landscape contracting position, they prefer candidates with strong horticultural skills over those with strong business skills. These results suggest landscape contracting firms would welcome a postsecondary-trained work force with improved business skills; however, this business training should not come at the expense of horticultural course work and experience.

Abstract:

Using a mail questionnaire, we invited landscape contracting decision-makers to comment on the effectiveness of landscape contracting programs at colleges and universities in preparing students for professional careers. A much larger percentage of respondents were either satisfied or extremely satisfied (52%) with college graduates recently hired than those who were dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied (8.1%). But, when asked to consider four knowledge categories, a majority (53%) said recent graduates are deficient in business knowledge, whereas smaller percentages of respondents noted deficiencies in construction (25.1%), horticulture (9.6%), and design skills (5.1%). When asked to rate the importance of topics that could be taught in undergraduate landscape contracting programs, respondents identified business topics (personnel management, estimating and bidding, and clientele management) as their top three choices. Respondents also named three business-related skills (client relationships, time management, and managing employees) among the top five most important skills for landscape contracting professionals. Despite the stated importance of business training and business skills, more than two-thirds (68.3%) of respondents said when hiring for an entry-level landscape contracting position, they would prefer candidates with strong horticulture skills over those with strong business skills.

Abstract:

As the landscape design/build industry continues to develop, opportunities for providing baccalaureate degree programs in landscape contracting increase. Employers seek individuals with competencies that are not adequately addressed by traditional horticulture or landscape architecture curricula. The Department of Horticulture at Penn State has developed a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Contracting degree. The program, now entering its fourth year of resident instruction, has experienced rapid growth and a high degree of success. Annual increases in student interest and demand have necessitated caps on the number of students entering the major. An emphasis on design process and on construction technology, and a requirement for successful completion of courses in Horticulture and allied departments contribute to an education which instructs students in the art, science, and management of a professional design/build business. Integration of computer-aided design into Landscape Contracting courses positions graduates to carry current technology to the industry. Students obtain skills on the use of AutoCAD, LandCADD, and New Image software.

Abstract:

Introducing a new curriculum option has led to greater student enrollment, more highly qualified students entering the curriculum, and better relations with and support from an expanding landscape industry. Student skills development, and enthusiasm has been enhanced by contemporary computer facilities, retooled instructional practices, new courses, strong ties to the industry, required internship, and an active post-graduation placement program. Justification for this option as well as specific details will be discussed.

Abstract:

In a survey of 42 recent graduates of the Penn State Department of Horticulture's Landscape Contracting major, 29 respondents indicated their present employment, salary range, and the type of work in which they were involved. 25 were employed by landscape contracting firms, 1 by an irrigation design firm, and 3 were attending graduate school. Salaries ranged from a low of $12,000 to $15,000, to a high of $30,000 to $35,000, with average just below $20,000. 19 were involved in landscape installation, while 14 were doing landscape design and 14 maintenance. Work in pest control and irrigation were each identified by 6 respondents. The survey requested identification of four areas important to their employment that were not adequately addressed in the curriculum. Equipment handling and repair and pest control received the greatest response. Also requested was identification of four aspects of the curriculum that were most useful to them in their employment. Design, plant identification, and construction practices received the greatest responses in this category.

Abstract:

The studied conditions for infection with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which occupies a leading place in Russia among all natural focal infections, mainly relate to forest and forest-steppe landscapes, while the conditions for infection of the population in the steppe remain poorly understood. The purpose of the work is to determine the conditions for infection with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in the population of the forest-steppe and steppe landscapes using the example of the Orenburg region. Puumala hantavirus circulates in the region. 731 maps of the epidemiological examination of the epidemic focus of zoonoses were studied. The study showed that in the forest-steppe landscape, in comparison with the steppe, infection of the population occurs more often during work on a personal plot, as well as in everyday life at the place of residence from small mammals or environmental objects. In the steppe landscape, in contrast to the forest-steppe, infection with hantaviruses is more often observed during fishing and when resting in the forest. Landscape layout is an unbiased professional and layout and art tradition practiced by panorama designers incorporating panorama and way of life. In cutting-edge practice, panorama design bridges the space between panorama architecture and lawn layout. Landscape design focuses on each the integrated primary landscape planning of an asset and the herbal elements of the plant life and the specific lawn design. Abstract:

An undergraduate major in Landscape Contracting was established at The Pennsylvania State University in 1989. Since its inception, women have been consistently underrepresented (13%). From department records and a survey instrument, we examined the academic performance, postgraduate job perceptions, and gender related issues of 319 male and female graduates. Our results showed that women students academically outperformed their male peers in courses specific to the Landscape Contracting curriculum. Survey results indicated that female graduates were represented in all job categories and performed similar types of work as their male peers. In addition, women did not differ significantly from their male peers in regard to job performance and satisfaction levels.

Abstract:

Abstract Advances in performance, digitalization, and automation create the environment for significant changes in well construction business models. Drilling contractors and suppliers are now better positioned to quantify the savings generated by their technology investments and define commercial structures that equitably share in the savings. This paper reviews disruptors driving non-traditional forms of contracting leading to a new value-driven business model based on a System of Systems architecture that meets industry needs. Disruptors driving new reward methods for technology providers are overcoming barriers resisting change such as status quo inertia, legal liability, and fear of sharing data. For example, new real-time systems enable remote operation expansion and improve operational alignment; digitalization and open data exchange create operational transparency across the complex well construction organization; process automation is being applied to multiple systems and is being scaled across equipment fleets. Organizational alignment to common value goals can be achieved through a System of Systems (SoS) architecture. This approach permits aligned and cascading outcome-based goals, including broader objectives like safety, environmental, social, and governance (ESG), to be recognized throughout the System of Systems which spans all operational elements. Two case studies are presented: one for short duration repetitive wells and one for longer duration offshore wells. Incentive style contracts have cycled through footage targets, "Drilling in the Nineties" style contracts, gainshare models, and even production enhancement/sharing contracts. Lump sum turnkey-style contracts have become established, and gainshare is making a comeback. Today, the changing landscape of digitized integration and automation from supplier investment creates an environment in which a high rate of change is becoming the norm. Modern incentive contracts, and other methods to invest in new technology based on aligned goals, are expected to increase in usage. As well delivery becomes more efficient using the new systems and tools, incentive contracts also enable ways to account for and exchange value. System of Systems architectures, leveraging those recent advancements, can provide an industry approach, at the higher levels, for improved application of common style incentive contracts. Crucially, the value can be quantifiably distributed, and new commercial value streams can be created and measured, driving new and adaptable business models. Capital asset-based contracting could become redundant in this new business and operational paradigm. System of Systems is a way of describing the digital and physical interconnectedness of well construction. It maps and manages how system elements interact to provide unique capabilities that none of the constituent systems can accomplish independently. System of Systems simplifies these complex processes and interactions of well construction with better organizational alignment.

Abstract:

Commercialization of consumers’ personal data in the digital economy poses serious, both conceptual and practical, challenges to the traditional approach of European Union (EU) Consumer Law. This article argues that mass-spread, automated, algorithmic decision-making casts doubt on the foundational paradigm of EU consumer law: consent and autonomy. Moreover, it poses threats of discrimination and under- mining of consumer privacy. It is argued that the recent legislative reaction by the EU Commission, in the form of the ‘New Deal for Consumers’, was a step in the right direction, but fell short due to its continued reliance on consent, autonomy and failure to adequately protect consumers from indirect discrimination. It is posited that a focus on creating a contracting landscape where the consumer may be properly informed in material respects is required, which in turn necessitates blending the approaches of competition, consumer protection and data protection laws.

Abstract:

This report summarizes the activities of the Soft Substrate Design Workshop held virtually on 08 September 2021. The 28 participants from federal, state, local, and academic organizations discussed designing and constructing islands with soft sediments in inland waterways. They were introduced to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Engineering With Nature® (EWN®) initiative and the vision for Tri-County Planning Commission (Peoria, Illinois). An overview of collaborative projects using landscape architecture and EWN principles was provided. The focus of discussion was on two primary waterways, the Upper Mississippi River System, and Illinois River. Participants discussed their experience associated with designing and constructing islands with and on soft sediments prior to breakout sessions to discuss specific design and contracting elements. The groups were brought together to discuss design techniques that could be implemented in the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois River systems.

Abstract:

The International Network on Data for Impact and Government Outcomes -INDIGO- is a data and learning collaborative where different organisations share their data on voluntary basis with the aim of creating a series of open data assets and advancing our understanding of outcomes-based contracting. The Impact Bond Dataset and the Pipeline dataset are examples of this collaborative approach. Every six months, we take stock of the new data on projects or upcoming projects and offer a snapshot of the landscape of impact bonds across the world2. The first section describes the distribution of impact bond projects across countries and regions. A series of data visualisations explore which countries are leading the way on a number of dimensions of scale, including number of projects, number of targeted or actual service users and how much upfront capital they raised. In addition, this section provides a description of the new additions to our datasets since January 2023 and a recap of the international impact bonds, those projects where at least one outcome funder is a foreign organisation. The second section provides an overview of the upcoming data visualisations that were published in September 2023, with the occasion of the Social Outcomes Conference. As part of the Life Chances Fund transparency agenda, we are working alongside the delivery partnership and the impact bond projects to release interim data on outcome achievements and outcome payments3. This second section presents two prototype data visualisations for the Skill Mill project and the project’s interpretation of their performance data. We hope that this ‘sneak peek’ will create excitement and enthusiasm to start a broader discussion around the best metrics and standards to represent the successes and difficulties that these projects are experiencing. This report uses data as of 09 October 2023. The Impact Bond Dataset is open to any policymaker, researcher or data enthusiast who is interested in impact bonds; and it can be downloaded here.
